Marvel’s Chris Hemsworth mocks his role as Thor in birthday post

Chris Hemsworth turned 39 years old last week (August 11), and to mark the occasion, he shared a photograph of himself as a child, repping superheroes all the way back when.

Amusingly, he’s isn’t wearing Thor-branded clothing, or even that of a Marvel hero, but a giant logo of DC’s biggest character, Batman.

“My younger self would be so disappointed,” he wrote.

And that’s been the luxury in working with different directors and different casts, they all bring out something very different in you.

“Ace Taika [Waititi] said, I feel like the character’s probably become more me over the years in, I hope, a fun way.”

Cameron Ciraldo to coach Canterbury Bulldogs, contract, how many years, Penrith Panthers, latest, updates

Cameron Ciraldo has landed his first NRL head coaching gig as he reportedly inked a five-year deal to take over the Canterbury Bulldogs from 2023.

Ciraldo, considered one of the brightest coaching minds in the game, has spent several years as Ivan Cleary’s understudy at the Penrith Panthers.

He has also turned down a number of approaches from other teams for a head coaching position previously, including one from the Wests Tigers in June.

Ciraldo had been heavily linked with the vacancy at Belmore after Trent Barrett left the role earlier this season.

The 38-year-old, who will also become the youngest head coach in the NRL next season, is no stranger to Bulldogs GM of football Phil Gould as the duo worked together at the Panthers.

According to The Daily Telegraphan emotional Ciraldo broke the news to the Panthers playing group at training on Sunday.

speaking on Fox League’s broadcast, Michael Ennis and Greg Alexander, two figures who have connections to the Bulldogs and Panthers respectively, spoke glowingly of Ciraldo’s credentials.

“It’s exciting times for them (Bulldogs),” Ennis said.

“Cameron’s very much where Craig Fitzgibbon was 12 months ago where he’s done a wonderful apprenticeship in a really good system.

“He’s had some previous experience when Anthony Griffin was moved on, did a great job at the back end of the season with the Panthers.

“So many of those young superstars that are now dominating at the top level, not just in club football but at Origin level, have such a wonderful wrap on him.”

While Alexander was upset to see Ciraldo move on from the Panthers, he believes it’s a sign that the club will continue to catapult assistant coaches into first grade gigs in the future.

“I’m excited for Cameron. It’s disappointing, but assistant coaches, everyone knows they’re about to move on. There’s been three moving on in the last two years.

“Trent Barrett left Penrith and went to the Dogs, Andrew Webster’s going to the Warriors and Cameron Ciraldo is going to the Dogs.

“Penrith’s assistant coaches, in terms of getting first grade jobs, have been pretty good.”

The hire of Ciraldo is also likely to keep five-eighth star Matt Burton at the club in a major boost to the club’s playing squad.

Ciraldo will take over a resurgent Bulldogs outfit thanks to interim coach Mick Potter’s efforts.

His departure is no doubt a massive blow to the Panthers, as Cleary must now search for two new assistans for next season following the looming exits of Ciraldo and Andrew Webster, who will take over the New Zealand Warriors in 2023.

CS:GO Source 2 gets first gameplay footage, but not from Valve

CS:GO Source 2 has been rumored for a while now, with fans of the biggest game on Steam expecting the online shooter to get upgraded imminently to the same engine powering Half-Life: Alyx. Well, CS:GO Source 2 is now a reality, and it even has gameplay footage. It just doesn’t come from Valve.

A team of game-makers and modders, represented by the long-standing Valve content creator channel Gabefollower, has rebuilt CS:GO in Source 2 from the ground up, using the community creation platform and spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod, S&box. The team claims that they have remade CS:GO without using a single line of code from the original game, and has created all the systems and mechanics from scratch. At the moment, the project is still in its infancy, with the first gameplay footage simply demonstrating a “vertical slice” which will be continually updated in the future. However, the team claims to have developed this within six months, suggesting that a full version may not take an enormous amount of time.

youtube thumbnail

In July, an exploit in Discord’s rich presence feature — which allows players to display game data on their profiles such as score, duration, and map — was used to determine that a new version of CS:GO was being played. Its map names used the suffix “s2”, which led some Valve content creators, such as YouTube’s Tyler McVicker, speculating that this signaled the game was being tested at the studio internally. Regardless of Valve’s own progress on CS:GO Source 2, the Gabefollower team says it will eventually release its own version as an open-source game. “Counter-Strike: Source 2 is a community driven, open-source project,” the team says. “We did not use a single line of code from CS:GO and eventually we’ll publish the full C# codebase on github.”

Recently, Steam stats revealed that CS:GO players have collectively been killing one another for the last 50,000 years. There is also a new CS:GO game mode whereby hitboxes are randomized from round to round. If you want to try that out, we recommend our guide to CS:GO ranks and also CS:GO console commands. Alternatively, you might want to try something entirely different, either from our list of the best FPS games, or one of the best multiplayer games, which, of course, also includes CS:GO.

What does Ed Perkins’ ‘The Princess’ say about society?

It draws solely from contemporary archival audio and video footage to take audiences back to key events in Diana’s life as they happened, including her seemingly fairytale public courtship and wedding, the birth of her two sons, her and Charles’ bitter divorce, and Diana’s untimely death aged 36, on August 31, 1997.

The film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move and the constant judgment of her character.

princess is the British director’s third feature documentary (he was nominated for an Academy Award for his 2018 short documentary, Black Sheep, about a black teenager’s experience with racism). He was 11 when Diana was killed (a year younger than Prince Harry), and says while her death de ella has been covered at length, most efforts had tried “to get inside her head de ella”.

Perkins says, most importantly, the film serves as a reflection of society at the time, revealing the public’s own preoccupations, fears, aspirations and desires.

“The part of the story that I personally find more interesting and that, I think, has been less explored is not ‘what does this story say about Diana?’ but actually, ‘what does Diana’s story say about all of us?’,” he says.

loading

“The part of the puzzle that I was instinctively drawn to is what does this say about our fascination? What does it say about our needs? What does it say about our desires? So, the whole reason we’ve constructed the film solely out of archive, the entire reason we haven’t used headshot interviews and kind of retrospective analysis is because we want the film to kind of hold a mirror up to all of us.

“The thing I think is most difficult to talk about is, like, what was our role in this story? What was our active role? What was our complicity in this tragic tale?

There are very few revelations in the film, which chronicles Diana’s life from right before the announcement of her engagement to Prince Charles up to her death. And Perkins says after watching literally hundreds of hours of footage of Diana, he still did not really get to know her about her.

Viewers don’t just see Diana through the media’s eye, in old interviews and broadcasts, but also the public’s reception of her through vox pops on TV news and current affairs programs. He says while the film “may not be revelatory”, it “offers a new perspective”.

“A lot of people talk about her being almost like a blank canvas onto which we were all able to project our own hopes and dreams and fears. And that’s perhaps one of the reasons why people, so many different people, found a sort of seemingly personal connection to her.”

Does the film draw a connection between Diana's life and modern-day royal crises? Director Ed Perkins says that's for audiences to decide.

Does the film draw a connection between Diana’s life and modern-day royal crises? Director Ed Perkins says that’s for audiences to decide.

The film uses part of a five-minute chunk of the now-infamous Panorama interview Diana gave to BBC journalist Martin Bashir in 1995, in which she broke her silence on Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, saying: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

The interview — watched by 23 million people — contributed to Diana’s divorce from Charles in 1996. In May last year, a report by British judge Lord Dyson found that Bashir had duped Diana into the interview by using fake documents that purported to show staffers were taking money in exchange for planting stories about her in the media. The report also found that BBC bosses tried to cover it up.

Perkins defends the use of the interview, which is shown briefly and in context, as a moment of historical record.

“I think Diana’s life for many years became a kind of national sitcom sort of soap opera. One of the questions the film is offering up is like, we want the fairytale but at what cost and at whose expense? These are real stories about real people, and we approached them with the sensitivity and respect they deserve,” he said.

Flowers left by mourners outside Kensington Palace after the 36-year-old princess' death.

Flowers left by mourners outside Kensington Palace after the 36-year-old princess’ death.

As to whether he can draw a connection to modern-day crises within the family, Perkins says it is up to viewers to draw their conclusions. But he did become more sympathetic, specifically towards princes William and Harry.

“You know, this isn’t a film that is trying to be pro-monarchy or anti-monarchy, pro-Diana or anti-Diana. We’ve tried to tell a complex story with a lightness of touch and with nuance,” he says.

“But I do think there are some ways in which we can see this story as sort of an origin story for some of the things that have happened more recently within the royal family, but also the kind of continued evolving relationship between us, the monarchy and people in public life.”

Nate Landwehr vs David Onama, fight of the year, reaction, latest, updates

The UFC might want to start preparing a space in the Hall of Fame for a featherweight bout between Nate Landwehr and David Onama as the two slugged it out in a contest that several fans heralded as the fight of the year at UFC San Diego.

Landwehr beat Onama via majority decision (29-27 x 2, 28-28), but it was far from a straightforward victory.

Onama had the better of the exchanges in the first round and dropped the Tennessee native with a thundering right hand that caught Landwehr flush on the side of his head.

However, Onama returned to his corner at the end of the first round and looked completely gassed whilst sitting on his stool.

The fatigue showed early in the second round as Landwehr came flying out of the gates and unloaded on strikers.

It was like a big brother toying with his little brother as Landwehr took Onama down whenever he pleased.

The 34-year-old also seemed to have multiple submissions locked in, but Onama continued to squirm out thanks to a sweaty body allowing him to elude whatever Landwehr threw his way.

Such was the dominance and lack of response from Onama that his trainer asked him if he wanted to continue fighting in between the second and third rounds, but he was keen to continue.

The third round was a grandstand finish, as Landwehr gestured to the crowd and waved his arms up and down to generate even more noise.

It lived up to the billing, as Landwehr continued to pile on the shots.

However, despite Onama’s fatigue clearly setting in, he dug deep and answered back with strikes of his own that had Landwehr scrambling.

Ultimately it was Landwehr that secured the victory and in his post-fight speech, he emphatically declared that “my mama didn’t raise no b***h baby.”

Fight fans were in awe at the slugfest they had just witnessed in San Diego.

SpaceX conducts the physics test of Super Heavy rocket booster

SpaceX tested the engine of the Super Heavy launch vehicle to fly the new Spacecraft. During the previous tests, which took place three months ago, the accelerator broke in.

Source: SpaceX.

SpaceX is starting the first study orbital flight of the Starship system, which consists of a big, heavy upper stage and spacecraft. The total height of this system is 120 meters. According to the available data, Elon Musks company plans to conduct a first orbital flight of the new ship from September 1, 2022 to March 1, 2023. The Super Heavy Booster 7 rocket and the Ship 24 will be used for this purpose.

The test runs were done by the Starbase site, South Texas. This time, only one of the 33 Raptor engines ran, but it ran for more than 20 seconds. The tests were aimed at investigating the engine’s quality. It’s assumed that during further testing SpaceX will gradually increase the number of engines that are launched simultaneously.

Remember that SpaceX plans on using a giant Starship system to fly to the Moon, Mars and more distant space objects. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) tested the possible possibility of the project, using the Starship design as the first lander to deliver astronauts to the lunar surface as part of an Artemis program. As for the next test flight, Booster 7 will splash down in Mexico at a moment, while Ship 24 will fly over the Earth before splashing down in the Pacific on Kauai’s Hawaiian island.

Meet Lady Amelia Windsor: Prince Harry and William’s cousin and the first royal influencer

Lady Amelia Windsor may only be 43rd in-line to the British throne, but she still lives an enviable life of royal luxury.

The 26-year-old, who counts Prince William and Prince Harry as her third cousins, is the daughter of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, and Sylvana Windsor and was once crowned the “most beautiful woman in the British royal family”.

While Lady Amelia hasn’t grown up with the same glaring spotlight as her famous cousins, the young royal is etching out a royal reputation for herself as an Instagram influencer.

As for her royal heritage, Amelia’s grandfather, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, 86, is the Queen’s first cousin and close confidant.

Edward has played a special role in the Queen’s life. Her Majesty arrived on the royal balcony at Trooping the Color for the Platinum Jubilee with Edward by her side.

He took the place of Prince Philip, who died in April 2021, for the moment.

Amelia’s early life had all the trappings of a modern aristocrat. Amelia attended a Catholic boarding school for girls and went on to study art, Latin and French at the University of Edinburgh.

She then took a “gap year” in India and Thailand, proving she’s an adventurous soul too.

Much like her philanthropic royal relatives, Amelia also volunteered for the Veterans Aid association.

In July last year, Amelia even cleaned out her wardrobe to sell items on Depop, with sales going directly to the Cross River Gorilla charity – which aims to preserve the endangered primate species.

Amelia – who simply goes by “Mel” online – lives in the upmarket London suburb of Notting Hill with her older sister, Lady Marina Charlotte Windsor.

As she is so far back in line for the throne, the socialite, model and budding fashion icon doesn’t have to work as a senior royal.

Instead, she pursues her passion for style as the face of several major fashion houses and brands.

Amelia is signed on as a model at Storm agency, the same firm which scouted Kate Moss at a New York airport in 1988.

She is regularly snapped at prestigious fashion events wearing Chanel and Dior and has worked for fashion brands such as Bulgari.

Vanity Fair also listed her in its International Best Dressed list for 2017.

And if Amelia’s Instagram is anything to judge her beauty by, these publications aren’t far off the mark.

Her profile, which has close to 100,000 followers, is brimming with stunning modeling shots, selfies and snaps from her elegant outings around London.

In July, she graced the cover of French Fries magazine wearing glamorous and preppy outfits.

She is essentially the royal family’s first social media influencer, a title Amelia takes seriously.

In an interview with thanks In 2017, Amelia admitted she was overwhelmed by her sudden online success.

“It’s more organic, really. I’m still getting to grips with it, learning how to use it.” [Instagram] wisely and sensibly,” she explained.

“Instagram is wonderful in so many ways, but it’s also something that should be used with respect – for yourself and for other people. It’s a learning curve for everyone, but it’s an amazing force of creativity and imagination.

UFC San Diego: Josh Quinlan first-round KO victory vs. Jason Witt, video

Welcome to the UFC, Josh Quinlan.

The Hawaii native has claimed a stunning one-punch knockout victory on his UFC debut, defeating American opponent Jason Witt in the first round of Sunday morning’s catchweight contest in San Diego.

Quinlan needed just over two minutes to send his rival to the canvas, throwing a well-directed hard counter left as Witt attacked his body with a kick.

Watch UFC 278: Usman v Edwards 2 LIVE on Main Event available on Kayo & Foxtel, Sunday 21 August from 12pm AEST. ORDER NOW >

The 29-year-old initially dived in for a follow-up after Witt flopped to the floor, but he thankfully restrained from attacking his dazed opponent.

“Sometimes you have to do follow-up punches … you don’t know if he’s going to recover,” Quinlan told reporters after the victory.

“Even though he hit the ground, I didn’t know if he was out or not — I didn’t know if he was going to pop up or if he was going to regain his bearings.

“I pounced on him, I was going to throw a couple more blows, but I saw he kind of went limp a little bit and the ref kind of called it out as well.

“I’m glad I was able to have that restraint, but that might not be the case all the time.

“We’re going in there to finish our opponent, and he’s going in to finish me, so I want to make sure the job’s done.

“We have to go until we’re told to stop, but I’m glad I was able to keep my composure … I’m not looking to hurt people in there, but we’re trying to bring out the best martial arts in each other.”

Quinlan, who appeared on Dana White’s Contender Seriesimproves his professional record to 6-0 (1 NC), with all of his wins coming via knockout or submission.

Witt, meanwhile, suffered a second-consecutive loss, falling to 2-4 in the UFC.

Later on the UFC San Diego card, featherweight fighter Nate Landwehr defeated David Onama via majority decision (29-27 x 2, 28-28) in an enthralling slugfest.

Lumina takes multi-screen setups to the next level with in-desk display

Lumina Desk Title

The Lumina Desk doesn’t seem out of the ordinary, akin to many high-end motorized desks you would see at a local retailer, however this one has a catch. The folks at Lumina decided to embed a 24in OLED display right into the surface of the desk.

Capable of functioning as a standalone or secondary display for your desktop or laptop, the company claims it to be “the ultimate workspace for productivity,” and it certainly looks the part. The display rests beneath a sleek black surface and is intended to nestle snuggly between your keyboard and monitor with ample room for a desktop, laptop and a beverage of choice, or anything else for that matter.

Lumina Desk Display

Onto specs, the 24in OLED display features a 60Hz refresh rate with a peak brightness of 1,200nits. No word on resolution and it is not touch capable either, but if the promo images are anything to go by, it does appear of outstanding quality. According to Lumina, the tech is “an always-on, ambient display that passively feeds you information,” the company has also built its own custom Lumina OS and a software development kit is available to developers. For now, the list of software applications includes Google Calendar, Instagram, Zoom, Robinhood, Twitter and more, including task lists and social feeds.

As for desk features, besides it being sit-stand capable with motorized control and supported memory functions, it measures 1500mm x 750mm and height can be adjusted anywhere between 750mm and 1200mm. Expect nothing but premium materials used here. The legs are made with a blend of anodized aluminum and stainless steel, while the dark surface table top is made of anti-glare reinforced glass.

Additional features include two hidden compartments located at the far end, each capable of 826 cubic inches of storage space, making cable management a breeze, and has a total of six built-in power outlets and six USB-C ports. You can also wireless charge any peripherals with Qi-charging support, as the desk features dual 20in wireless charging pads alongside the display, capable of delivering 100W each.

Lumina’s not the first to experiment with imbedded desktop displays, back in the early 2000’s Microsoft brought promise of a future where our tables would resemble the sci-fi flicks we grew up watching – the Surface Table (remember that?) indulged our Blade Runner and Tron-era fantasies and featured a massive fully interactive display, complete with speakers and multi-touch control.

We also saw the release of the Surface Hub and Surface Hub 2S, although these interactive surface computing platforms were reserved for business, retail, and commerce sectors, and the technology is yet to transition to the consumer space in a meaningful way. Many others tried to bring their own versions to market, albeit to limited success.

The 16-year-old PixelSense table does have one up on the Lumina Desk, besides being full-touch capable, it could sense any stationary objects on top of the screen, so you wouldn’t have to worry about accidentally clicking on something. Truly ahead of its time.

No Pricing and availability just yet, though you can expect the Lumina Desk at some point in 2023. Pre-orders aren’t available, but for those interested you can sign up for up-to-date notifications as it moves closer to production. It certainly won’t come cheap, but that shouldn’t deter anyone who fantasizes over Mr Dillinger’s desk…

floating moments show why he’s in elite company

CHRIS ROCK: Ego Death
Aware Super Theatre, August 13
★★★½

Moments into his new show, Chris Rock addresses the elephant in the room: “I’m OK”. With that, he’s away, riffing on his sheer incredulity at unwittingly being one half of that headline-hogging Oscars slap. “He’s bigger than me! He has played Ali!” he relates, eyes boggling with the ridiculousness of the whole thing. “I couldn’t even play Floyd Mayweather!” It’s a bright spot in a slow opening stretch that sees Rock offer meandering thoughts on the general craziness of the times.

The 57-year-old has authored some of the most dazzlingly original and expertly provocative stand-up comedy ever, but, at times, ego-death relies on his still sublime delivery to sell material that tends to the anonymous.

There are familiar takes on the dangerous buffoonery of Trump, the illogic of anti-vaxxers, how ancient Joe Biden seems, and the irksome phenomena of self-appointed virology experts. More distinctive are the reflections on his wealth and how this shaped his daughters’ upbringing. There are amusing detours into what a trip to Disneyland looks like for the kids of a Hollywood A-lister. One section on a private school threatening to expel his daughter is overlong but eventually arrives at a satisfying conclusion.

Other times, he delights in wrong-footing the audience, explaining that he’s pro-choice but for somewhat unexpected reasons. He also explores his life as a single man and expresses his cynicism about monogamy and paranoia about dating in the #MeToo era.

the show is preceded by a montage of stand-up greats: Carlin, Kaufman, Pryor, Rivers. There are moments here, floating but undeniable, when he’s stalking the stage in that classic feline prowl or building up to a crescendo of exasperation, that you get a glimpse of why Rock belongs in that elite company.

Chris Rock: Ego Death is at Qudos Bank Arena on August 15.
