Nick Faldo bids adieu from the booth after 16 years

Throughout an illustrious playing career, Nick Faldo was known as a stoic competitor who rarely let his guard down. It was a famously even keel – he won The Open in 1987 with 18 pars in the final round – that maintained a laser focus at the moment, devoid of context.

Sunday afternoon, Faldo allowed himself to soak it in.

This week’s Wyndham Championship marked the final telecast for the longtime CBS lead analyst alongside Jim Nantz, as Faldo announced his retirement from the booth earlier this summer.

The emotion was palpable during the final round at Sedgefield CC in Greensboro, North Carolina, as colleagues provided colloquial tributes; Faldo even mused in appreciation for Wyndham Championship winner Joohyung Kim’s English name “Tom,” inspired by the venerable British television series “Thomas the Tank Engine.”

As closing credits approached, Faldo found difficulty holding it all together. As colleagues Nantz, Ian Baker-Finch and Frank Nobilo rose to provide a standing ovation, the moment’s significance transcended the television screen.

“I blew it,” began Faldo before halting to compose himself. I have paused for a few seconds.

“I was already…”

Faldo wept for a few more moments as his colleagues provided encouragement in the booth.

“Hang on. Five seconds breathing. OKAY.”

“You’ve got this,” offered Nantz, his broadcast partner of 16 years.

Faldo was ready.

“So I was on a boat in Ireland,” he said. “They gave me a call and said, ‘How would you like to sit next to Jim Nantz?’ I literally fell out of the boat. I really did. That was 2006, and here we are, 16 years later.”

I have paused again.

“It’s been an amazing run,” said Nantz.

Nobilo and Baker-Finch then took a few seconds to provide parting thoughts and praise Faldo’s love for the game.

Faldo thanked the CBS production crew before summoning the composition for his final message to colleagues and viewers.

“I’m a single child,” Faldo said. “And I’ve found, at 65, three brothers. Thank you.”

Faldo announced his retirement from broadcasting in mid-June; he will be replaced by Trevor Immelman as lead CBS analyst alongside Nantz.

Faldo, a six-time major champion, brought a player’s perspective to the booth, incorporating his insights on the strategy behind players’ decisions at key moments. He has moved to Montana with his wife Lindsay; the couple is renovating a farm. He looks forward to spending time with his family, three dogs and wildlife.

“I have been on the road since I was 18 years old,” Faldo said earlier this summer. “That’s a long run of airports, hotel rooms and restaurant meals.”

Regarding his future plans, Faldo held up a book on how to raise miniature cows as pets and offered a smile through the tears.

“I’m ready,” he said.

Faldo made his first TOUR start in 1979 in Greensboro. I have signed off for the final time in Greensboro.

It was appropriate. It was heartfelt. And the credits rolled.

Ray Hadley 2GB storms off Brisbane Ekka broadcast due to technical ‘fiasco’ and returns to Sydney

Ray Hadley blows up and storms off the air just ONE HOUR into a week-long live broadcast from Brisbane as technical problems hit his broadcast: ‘A complete and utter fiasco!’

  • Ray Hadley was broadcasting from the Royal Queensland Show on Monday
  • The program from ‘The Ekka’ was set by technical problems from the start
  • Hadley quit the show after an hour and said he was heading back to Sydney
  • Stand-in announcer Mark Levy took over for the duration of the 2GB program

An irate Ray Hadley has walked off a live broadcast from the Royal Queensland Show after technical difficulties turned his morning radio program into a ‘fiasco’.

Hadley told listeners on Monday his broadcast from the show, known as the Ekka, had been a disaster from when he went on air shortly after 9am and he would not continue.

The 2GB announcer had been heavily promoting the Brisbane visit on his program and had been supposed to be at the Ekka all week.

Hadley ran the usual introduction to his show, which is also played on Brisbane’s 4BC and dozens of network stations around Australia, but it quickly descended into chaos.

‘Just a couple of little technical problems as we’re at the Ekka and things will be rectified by the time I get here tomorrow, I can assure you,’ Hadley said.

‘Now I’m going to take a little break and come back and look at the weather very shortly. The time is coming up now to 25 past nine.’

After playing commercials and enduring continual glitches including periods of silence Hadley came back on and said, ‘Look, we’re gonna take another break’.

More advertisements followed before Hadley said the problems were ongoing and he would be ‘having discussions’ when the program finished at midday.

‘All I can do is apologize most sincerely for the first 30 minutes of the program which has been a complete and utter fiasco,’ he said.

‘But I do apologize. I’m broadcasting from the Ekka, which I didn’t get a chance to tell you because nothing seemed to work.

‘I hope it is currently working and we’ll see what happens from here on in but I do apologize most sincerely to network stations and the listeners on 2GB and 4BC for what’s basically been a fiasco for 30 minutes.

‘And obviously we’ll be having some discussions at midday about the fiasco I’ve presided over. ‘

After another break the difficulties had still not been resolved and Hadley said his regular stand-in, Mark Levy, would be taking over the show.

‘Look, we are having some rather severe technical problems here at the Ekka to the extent that Mark Levy will be looking after the program after ten o’clock this morning, for which I do apologize to Mark and everyone else.’

‘… While I’m on air there are people here trying to fix things – unsuccessfully I might mention – at the moment.

‘There’s no point trying to, as we do from time to time, get through three hours of this without much help because technically we don’t have anything here in front of me that’s actually working at the moment.

‘So we’ll lumber on until ten and then Mark will take control.’

As the clock ticked closer to 10am, Hadley told listeners he was heading for the airport.

‘I’ll make my way back to Sydney and I’ll be broadcasting from the studio in Sydney tomorrow given the problems we’ve encountered this morning.’

Daily Mail Australia understands Hadley has been assured the technical issues would be fixed. He will resume broadcasting from the Ekka on Tuesday.

‘Ray will be remaining in Brisbane and broadcasting from the Ekka this week,’ a spokeswoman for Nine Entertainment, which owns 2GB, said.

Pro-SALT deduction House Democrats say they’ll back Senate bill

House Democrats who are pushing to lift a $10,000 fixed cap on state and local taxes (SALT) said they will support the Inflation Reduction Act, which passed the US Senate on Sunday, even without the SALT deduction.

Both New Jersey Reps. Mikie Sherrill and Josh Gottheimer — who insisted “no SALT, no deal” on previous spending packages — expressed support on Sunday for the Inflation Reduction because it does not affect personal income tax rates or raise taxes on their constituents.

“We all know how high the cost of living is in Northern New Jersey. I ran for Congress to tackle those costs on behalf of the people of the 11th Congressional District. That’s exactly why I’m voting for the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022,” Sherrill said in a statement. “Because this legislation does not raise taxes on families in my district, but in fact significantly lowers their costs, I will be voting for it.”

The $740 billion Inflation Reduction Act cleared the Senate on Sunday afternoon with the support of all 50 Democrats and a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Harris.

Sherrill said she also supported the climate, healthcare and tax bill because it will lower prescription drug prices by allowing Medicare to negotiate costs; invest in clean energy and “good-paying jobs”; and impose a minimum tax on corporations.

The House will next take up the legislation before a final version reaches President Biden, who applauded its passage on Sunday and called it the “largest investment ever in combatting the existential crisis of climate change.”

Amid negotiations for an even larger spending package last year, House Democrats Sherrill, Gottheimer and Tom Suozzi (DN.Y.) demanded it include a provision lifting the $10,000 SALT cap, threatening to withhold their support without it.

Currently, filers who itemize deductions on state and local taxes in federal returns are capped at $10,000, a result of the 2017 tax cuts enacted by Republicans.

Democrats from high-tax states such as New Jersey, New York and California have slammed the cap as harmful to their residents and the state’s ability to provide services.

Gottheimer in a statement acknowledged the Inflation Reduction Act does not include any provisions raising the SALT cap, but said he supported it because it does not raise taxes in his district and was a “huge win” in terms of lowering prescription drug prices and boosting manufacturing .

“The Inflation Reduction Act makes no changes to personal income tax rates or those impacting small businesses. That has always been my red line, and it is the key to delivering affordability for our families,” he said, adding it would cut costs at more than $2,000 for every family.

“The bill is fully paid for, in part, with provisions that go after tax cheats. It will also help pay down the debt — a fiscally-responsible way to get inflation down,” he added.

“This legislation doesn’t raise taxes on families in my District — it reduces the financial burden on them. For that reason, and for its strong support of the climate, lower prescription drug prices, and job creation, I’ll be voting for it.”

Tahlia McGrath plays amid Covid drama as Australia win Games cricket gold | Commonwealth Games 2022

Australia’s all-conquering women’s cricket team continued their dominance of the sport after edging out India in the Commonwealth Games final at Edgbaston, but not before Covid-19 has served up a dose of drama.

Meg Lanning’s side secured a nine-run win to claim the first Commonwealth gold awarded to women in a tight match in which India threatened to pull off a remarkable run chase right to death.

The history-making victory came amid high drama though, with Australia confirming midway through their innings that all-rounder Tahlia McGrath had tested positive to Covid-19 on the morning of the match.

If the final had been held in Australia, McGrath would not have been able to play but the Commonwealth Games rules are more relaxed to match the laws of the host nation.

After checking with bodies including the International Cricket Council and the Commonwealth Games Foundation – resulting in a 12-minute delay to the toss – she was allowed to take her place, with precautions. Wearing a mask, she sat isolated from her teammates during the batting innings and in a surreal moment after taking a catch in the third over, she waved her teammates away as they ran to celebrate.

“We were all happy to play, she was happy to play,” fast bowler Megan Schutt said after the game. “She feels absolutely fine so I think the positive result was a bit of a shock to her, but that’s Covid isn’t it – we’re all going to live through it.”

When the final wicket was confirmed by the third umpire, McGrath went from standing outside the team huddle to jump into it. And when she received her medal on the podium, she was, in stark contrast to her teammates, masked.

“We didn’t want to get in trouble, we felt bad for Tahlia at the end there,” Schutt said. “Obviously when you’re part of a game that’s so thrilling like that, that’s all you want to do [is celebrate] and at the end screw it, if we get Covid, so be it.”

While India maintained a diplomatic line, it is believed they were not as supportive of the decision. “Before the toss we got to know… that was something which was not in our control and whatever the decision the Commonwealth had, we had to follow it,” skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said.

Opener Beth Mooney – who starred with the bat making 61 off 41 balls – said: “It’s a real shame that in elite sport you get publicly shamed for having Covid when over here probably 90% of the people in this room have it right now.

“No-one’s testing, no-one’s doing anything. It’s just a real shame she couldn’t celebrate with us, but at the same time I think the right decision was made in terms of letting her play. Hopefully people aren’t too upset about it”.

Australia had been on top until reeled in late in their innings. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur then batted brilliantly when scoring 65 from 43 balls. But when she was caught by record-breaking wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy off the bowling of Ash Gardner in the 16th over, the momentum swung back towards the Australians.

“Eleven she [Kaur] flicked the switch there and started bombing us for fours and sixes we knew we were in trouble… her wicket, that was the absolute turning point,” Schutt said. India came down to needing 11 off the final over, but Jess Jonassen needed only three balls to finish off the tail.

“It means a lot more than a I thought it did before these Commonwealth Games,” Schutt said.

Australia could have made things easier for themselves had they gone on with what was looking like being a big total. Mooney and skipper Meg Lanning (36 off 26) put on 74 for the second wicket, and at 109-3 with seven overs to go, 180-plus was in the offing.

Gareth Parker revealed to take over news director role at Nine News Perth

WA journalist and radio host Gareth Parker is set to take on the role of news director in the Channel 9 Perth newsroom.

Parker announced the news on his morning breakfast radio show on Monday.

“I’ll be leaving 6PR breakfast … I am incredibly excited and proud to say that I’ve accepted a new job as the director of news for Channel 9 Perth, which is a huge opportunity for me personally,” Parker told listeners .

“I am looking forward to getting up the hill to the top of the Terrace and getting stuck into the newsroom.”

A date for when Parker will start in the new role has not yet been announced.

“I am not going to disappear immediately, there is still a bit to sort out with a move like this,” he said.

6PR has taken a massive hit in some of this year’s radio ratings surveys.

He worked for The West Australian for over a decade, including almost four years as the paper’s State political editor.

Parker also served as the paper’s Melbourne bureau chief and as online deputy editor.

Florida prosecutor says he is planning a ‘vigorous defense’ after Gov. DeSantis suspended him

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Florida prosecutor who was suspended by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis for his refusal to charge doctors or abortion patients for illegally terminating pregnancies is vowing to put up a “vigorous defense” legally.

DeSantis suspended Andrew Warren, a Democrat state attorney, on Aug. 4 during a news conference where he said that the prosecutor didn’t enforce duly-passed laws that crack down on child sex change surgeries and certain abortion procedures.

“We had the individual here from Hillsborough County say and [sign] letters that there are certain laws he just won’t enforce and won’t prosecute,” DeSantis told Fox News. “[State’s] attorneys that put their ideology over the rule of law are not satisfying their oath of office.”

Without providing specifics, Warren said on Sunday that he would fight the suspension.

“I’m not going down without a fight. I’m a former federal prosecutor, the duly elected state attorney, a native Floridian and a proud American. I refuse to let this man trample on your freedoms, to speak your mind, to make your own health care decisions, and to have your vote count. I hope you’ll stand with me,” Warren said.

Warren was elected in 2016 and 2020.

In the video, Warren said that the governor is attempting to overthrow an election.

“Ron DeSantis is trying to overthrow democracy in Florida. His plot to suspend me blatantly violates the most fundamental basis of our democracy. Your vote. He’s trying to overturn the results of a fair and free election in abusing his power to serve his own political ambition,” he said.

A press release from DeSantis’ office states that he “has the authority to suspend a state officer under Article IV, Section 7 of the Constitution of the State of Florida.”

After suspending Warren, DeSantis appointed Hillsborough County Court Judge Susan Lopez as his replacement.

“It is my duty to hold Florida’s elected officials to the highest standards for the people of Florida. I have the utmost trust that Judge Susan Lopez will lead the office through this transition and faithfully uphold the rule of law,” DeSantis said in the press release.

A law in Florida banning abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions such as if an abortion is needed to save a mother’s life, cases of rape or incest, and more went into effect on July 1.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Wind Waker Completely Rewritten By Fan, It’s Like A Whole New Game

Wind Waker is, I am very proud to say, my favorite video game of all time. I’ve played through it so many times that I like to think I’ve seen every line of dialogue the game has to offer. So I’m very excited to try this mod out that takes every one of those lines of dialogue Nintendo put in the game and throws them all out the window.

Via Kotaku AU, The Wind Waker Rewritten is a project by aproxm that adds a few textures and changes a few cinematics, but does most of its work on the game’s script, adding over 10,000 lines of dialogue that completely reimagine every single one of the game’s characters, all in the name of comedy .

Some of these will work better for you than others — depending on how you read them in your head, anyway — but even if they don’t, you can maybe still appreciate the King of Red Lions being a cowboy, or Beedle getting dialogue more befitting of his visual design.

The 4:20 trailer below will give you an idea of what kind of changes have been made, exactly, which in addition to just the raw number of dialogue changes also shows how every cutscene has had to have its context changed, and how every single NPC in the game has now been “re-characterized”.

The official pitch reads:

Experience the Great Sea in an entirely new and unprecedented way with The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker Rewritten, a romhack that takes the dialogue from the original Gamecube classic and rewrites it from front to back to tell an entirely different, unique story within the same framework of the game you know and love.

This romhack does not change any models, levels, islands, characters, ai, music, sfx, or any sort of gameplay whatsoever. Instead, the Wind Waker Rewrite features:

– Over 10,000+ new lines of dialogue

– Reimagined cutscenes and characterizations

– New video files

– A handful of texture edits

Welcome to newcomers and series veterans alike, the Wind Waker Rewritten is the perfect way to either replay this fan favorite or step foot in its world for the very first time. Playing this romhack couldn’t be easier, too–simply download one of two Patch Files and use “xDelta UI” to apply either patch to your original Wind Waker .iso or .nkit. And then you’re good to go!

If you want to try it out, you can download the mod here.

“Thank you for always having my back I love you so much dad,” she wrote, along with the sweet photo of them hugging.

Rumors have circulated of a feud between Victoria and the newlywed since Nicola and Brooklyn’s wedding on April 9 this year, with Page Six reporting that the pair are not on speaking terms.

Peltz recently hinted at the impact the feud was having on her mental health, posting some posed snaps of her with tear-stained cheeks and bloodshot eyes.

“Sometimes I find it hard to show the sad bits of me. Growing up with seven siblings and two very strong parents made me really tough, they hammered it into me to not let people bring me down or hurt my heart,” she wrote in the caption.

“We all have days where people make you feel bad and it’s okay to be hurt by it. I love you all so much and truly appreciate all of your support.”

The feud between Beckham and Peltz reportedly stems from how Nicola’s family treated the Beckhams before and during the wedding. (Getty)

A source recently revealed to Page Six that in the months before Nicola and Brooklyn’s Miami wedding, the actress and her wealthy family did not want Victoria “to be any part of the planning.”

The source claimed that Nicola wouldn’t clue the former Spice Girl in on anything and “communication was minimal.”

Apparently, ever since the extravagant affair – which was held at the luxurious Peltz family estate – it’s been “non-stop petty drama” and the tension is coming between Beckhams and their son.

There is also speculation of discontent between the Beckhams and Peltz family, with some claiming the feud between Victoria and Nicola stems from the treatment the Beckhams received from the Peltz family before and during the wedding.
