Michigan: inquiry urged into claims of Republican-led voting-machine breach | Michigan

Michigan’s attorney general has called for a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of a Republican-led effort to gain unauthorized access to voting equipment in the aftermath of the 2020 national election.

Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, called for the investigation on Friday after Michigan state police examined whether Matt DePerno, a lawyer and presumptive Republican candidate for the office, may have orchestrated the alleged effort.

It came after reports that Donald Trump supporters persuaded clerks to give them access to the voting machines in an effort to prove that fraud cost the former president a second term. Such claims of a fraudulent election have been repeatedly shown to be false.

Nessel’s office said on Friday that an investigation had led them to DePerno who, it claimed, had “orchestrated a coordinated plan to gain access to voting tabulators”. Calls for a special prosecutor were first published by Politico, citing a petition from Nessel.

The attorney general’s office claims that investigators found that voting tabulators had been removed, broken into and tested at hotels and short-term rentals.

“When this investigation began, there was not a conflict of interest,” Nessel’s petition said. “However, during the course of the investigation, facts were developed that DePerno was one of the prime instigators of the conspiracy.”

Reuters reported on Sunday that DePerno had led a team to examine a vote tabulator from Richfield Township, a conservative stronghold of 3,600 people in northern Michigan’s Roscommon county, in one of four possible breaches of Michigan law prohibiting unauthorized access to voting equipment under investigation.

According to Nessel’s petition, five tabulators were taken from Roscommon and Missaukee counties in northern Michigan, and Barry county in western Michigan.

The request for a prosecutor also names Ben Cotton, Jeff Lenberg, Cyber Ninjas founder Douglas Logan and James Penrose. Each have been involved in efforts to question the 2020 election and were allegedly involved in the Michigan “tests”.

Under Michigan law, obtaining undue possession of a voting machine used in an election is a felony punishable by five years in prison.

DePerno is the Trump-endorsed candidate for the state’s republican attorney general nomination and supports the ex-president’s false claims about his 2020 loss in the state, which was instrumental in his defeat to Joe Biden. He has been endorsed by Michigan attorney general by state Republicans and is likely to be officially nominated later this month.

At the CPAC conference in Dallas earlier this month, Trump said DePerno is “going to make sure that you are going to have law and order and fair elections.”

If Nessel’s petition for a special prosecutor is successful, the prosecutor would then be called to determine if the state should bring criminal charges against DePerno and eight other associates alleged to have taken part in the effort.

DePerno’s campaign manager, Tyson Shepard, accused Nessel in the Detroit News of having a “history of targeting and persecuting her political enemies.”

Shepard added: “Dana Nessel knows she is losing this race. She is desperate to win this election at all costs and is now targeting DePerno, her political opponent of her.

He called Nessel’s actions “unethical” and said they would “demonstrate to the voters that she is unfit for office.”

Why it’s not the end of the world if Carlton misses the top eight

It’s not the end of the world if Carlton falls out of the top eight from here, according to David King.

The Blues need to win one more game to make it, with the Bulldogs likely to overtake them on percentage if they don’t.

Losses to Adelaide and Brisbane on the road have left them still needing that 13th win, with Melbourne and Collingwood to come.

With an injury list in double digits all season and the pending suspension of Patrick Cripps, that final victory feels unlikely.

However, King believes Carlton has laid out their game style, since they have the tools and shouldn’t be too dismayed if they miss out.

“We were there at the start of the season for their practice game at IKON Park to work out who they are. They were going flat out at every training session, flat out at every pre-season game. It’s a long year,” King told SEN Breakfast.

“They’ve shown this season that in 2023 and 2024 they’re going to be a force. They’ve set standards.

“They aren’t as physically imposing as they were in the first eight weeks of the season, they aren’t as brutal in the contest and clearance, their top players maybe aren’t in ripping form, they’ve hit the wall a little bit for me

“Which is probably expected. I probably expected this with Collingwood, Hawthorn, the first-time coaches coming in have got to set standards and get rolling so early in pre-season and there’s no tapering.

“It hasn’t happened at Collingwood, but it has happened at Carlton. There’s no shame in that.

“If Cripps gets a few weeks and they go in without three or four of their midfield set, they’ll get what they get, but there’s so many positives out of Carlton this year.

“It doesn’t really matter if you finish seventh, eighth, ninth or 10th. It doesn’t change where you’re going next year.

“I just think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

“I’d love to do a study on teams that have finished seventh and eighth the last few years and how it’s impacted the following two to three seasons. Has it actually helped them or is it a false economy?

“They go so hard in the last three weeks to limp into eighth and more often than not they’re out week one and all the talk and all the excitement, it just becomes a nonsense.

“In terms of the way they play, I think there’s been enormous gains this year. Michael Voss has done a great job.

“They’ve run out of personnel. Injuries have got them.”

On top of likely losing Cripps for the final two games, the Blues will likely be without Matt Kennedy (broken jaw) and George Hewett (back) from their starting midfield group.

The Blues will seemingly have at least 14 players unavailable for Saturday night’s clash with Melbourne.

The Spy Who Loved Me Is The GoldenEye 007 Sequel You Need To Play

Gaming legends don’t come much bigger than golden eye 007and while we never got a sequel to Rare’s Nintendo 64 classic, the legacy of golden eye 007 went on to inspire everything from Perfect Dark to Call of Duty. Although first-person shooters were largely defined by DOOMit was golden eye 007 that proved their worth on home consoles.

Based on the 1995 movie of the same name, golden eye came to the N64 in 1997 and changed the way we game forever. While the story continued with Eurocom’s 2010 remake for the Wii U, plans for a long-rumored new-gen remaster have ground to a halt. If you want to get your fix, how about playing The Spy Who Loved Me?

What Is The Spy Who Loved Me?

As the work of modder Graslu00, The Spy Loved Me imagine a Bond game made by Rare. Instead of jumping off the dam and touring the USSR with Natalia, we’re teaming up with Anya Amasova and heading to Egypt to take on Jaws. While Graslu00 doesn’t explain why they picked The Spy Who Loved Me out of all the Bond movies, it’s still a lot of fun.

Based on the 1977 movie that starred Roger Moore, this mod reimagines the basic mechanics of golden eye 007 as a whole new game. The hour-long video runs through a variety of levels. From the iconic parachute opening of the Alps to Karl Stromberg’s underwater lair in Liparus, we get to see the whole game play out. With this being a Moore movie, the character model of Pierce Brosnan is swapped out for Moore’s likeness of him as 007.

The Spy Who Loved Me runs 4K at 60 frames per second through an emulator, but retro gamers will also be able to play it on an N64. If you’re sold, you can play The Spy Who Loved Me demo and the first three levels thanks to N64 Vault. Even though there’s no release date for the actual game, the reaction from fans proves it’s one we should be keeping an eye on.

Fans React To The Spy Who Loved Me

The Spy Who Loved Me GoldenEye 007

N64 Vault

We aren’t the only ones who loved The Spy Who Loved Me. One supporter cheered, “Fans prove again the modding community can put out absolutely God-tier creations. Seriously kudos to everyone behind this! Looks amazing.” Another said, “This was really well put together, I thought it was going to be a copy and paste of renamed levels with different objectives. Nah You went all out dawg. You nailed it! It’s like a legitimate Goldeneye 2.” A third concluded, “This really is amazing! My favorite game of all time meets my favorite film of all time!”

Unfortunately, modding is the best we can hope for at the moment when it comes to golden eye 007. Last year, footage from a canceled Xbox remake appeared online. Way back when, Microsoft had been working on a remake, but due to the Wii U remaster, it was axed at the last minute. This isn’t the first time Graslu00 has headed into the world of golden eyewith us previously writing about their impressive Mario 64 and golden eye 007 crossover. Once again, the modding community does what the devs never could.

How the Blues slumped against “finals-like” Lions

Garry Lyon believes Carlton “failed the test” against Brisbane on Sunday.

The Blues needed to win at the Gabba after dropping their Round 20 fixture to the Crows in Adelaide which saw them fall towards the bottom end of the eight.

Michael Voss’ side was up against a Lions outfit that had given up a 42-point lead to lose to Richmond last weekend and had shown indifferent form in recent weeks.

Lyon admits he did have doubts about Brisbane’s form, but was pleasantly surprised with the way they “smothered” the Blues.

“I’ve had a few doubts about Brisbane,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“I’ve looked at it and said I’m not sure about their forward line.

“Watching that game yesterday with so much on the line, the first half or three quarters… if they bring the heat and pressure like they did in that first half, then they can do something pretty memorable.

“I’m not saying they can win it, but they smothered Carlton in a way that they (the Blues) just never got into space. It was all on the back of (being) just at them, at them, at them.”

Lyon feels it was a missed opportunity for the Blues who conceded eight goals to the Lions in the first half before saving some face with a sugar-coated eight-goal final term.

He says the result provides this Saturday night’s clash against third-placed Melbourne with so much extra significance.

“That looked to me finals-like (from Brisbane),” he said.

“If you’re a Carlton fan, that was as close to final intensity that they could expect, if they ever got there, and they failed. They just failed the test.

“The eight goals in the last quarter is just like Essendon’s year.

“To use the analogy, it’s like a horse that gets back and then flashes home and you go, ‘wow’, but it doesn’t mean anything unless you actually win one and they didn’t.

“A lot of pressure on Carlton, they play Melbourne this weekend and a lot at stake on Saturday night.

“They’ll find out one way or the other.”

The Blues are hanging onto their position in the eight for dear life after a third loss in four weeks.

Eighth-placed Richmond is breathing down their necks just two points behind and with matches against Hawthorn (13th) and Essendon (14th) to come.

Even the 10th-placed Western Bulldogs (eight points in arrears of the Blues) remain in the mix with fixtures against GWS (16th) and the Hawks come, while ninth-placed St Kilda have to play Brisbane (5th) and Sydney (4th) .

The Blues have to navigate the Demons before meeting a barnstorming Collingwood side in Round 23 and they might just have to do so without Captain Patrick Cripps who could land himself in hot water for a head-high hit on Callum Ah Chee.

Brodie Grundy to miss rest of season with ankle stress fracture

Collingwood star Brodie Grundy has called the fresh injury setback that will see him miss the remainder of the season “devastating” as he prepares to go under the knife for the second time this year.

Grundy has not played since Anzac Day after having surgery on his knee, and had been nearing a return in recent weeks before suffering a stress fracture in his ankle.

The 28-year-old played in Collingwood’s VFL side on July 30 and reported soreness in the days that followed, with scans later revealing the extent of the injury.

Grundy confirmed the injury in a video message posted to his social media accounts on Monday evening.

“Just wanted to jump on here and let you know that I’m heading in for surgery tomorrow for my troublesome ankle,” he said.

“I’ve got a fracture there, it’s bubbled away on my return from my PCL which unfortunately means I’m going to miss the remainder of the season.

“Devastating, particularly given how the boys are going, but on the other side of things, it’s going to be amazing to sit with you all and watch the boys as they make a run for the finals.

“I’m going to do everything I can to be back bigger and stronger for you guys next year.”

Collingwood says the ankle injury is completely separate to the PCL injury Grundy suffered during Collingwood’s Anzac Day win over Essendon after a knee-on-knee clash with Bombers big man Sam Draper.

“The nature of the ankle injury is not long-term so Brodie will make a full recovery but after consulting with multiple specialists to assess all options available, it was determined arthroscopic surgery would be the best course of action,” Collingwood’s GM of football, Graham Wright said in a statement on Monday.

“The pleasing thing for Brodie is that his knee has held up well – this is a separate injury – and unfortunately with only a couple of weeks left of the home-and-away season, he will be unable to take further part in matches in 2022.

“Brodie will be up and running at the start of pre-season training but for the time being his health remains the priority.”

Grundy’s injury comes as Collingwood continues to ride an incredible wave of momentum that has seen it win 11 consecutive matches, with a win over the reigning premiers Melbourne its most recent triumph.

In more positive news for the club, small forward Jamie Elliott has turned his back on free agency to sign a deal that will see him remain a Magpie through 2025.

Elliott has been a solid contributor to a Collingwood side that currently sits second on the AFL ladder, having kicked 21 goals in 14 games this season.

Top Pakistan Taliban leader killed in Afghanistan roadside attack | Pakistan Taliban News

Abdul Wali, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, was allegedly behind some of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan in recent years.

A late night roadside bombing in eastern Afghanistan has struck a vehicle carrying members of the Pakistan Taliban, killing a senior leader and three other members of the group, several Pakistani officials and the group said.

Abdul Wali, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, was a top commander of the Pakistan Taliban and was allegedly behind some of the deadliest attacks in recent years.

Wali’s vehicle was struck on Sunday night by a roadside bomb in the Afghan province of Paktika, along the border with Pakistan, according to Pakistani officials and the TTP members who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press news agency.

The three other men who were killed included his driver and two of his close aides, they said.

Wali’s death delivers a big blow to the armed group, known formally as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and comes a week after a US drone raid in Kabul killed al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the Sunday night killing of Wali, who was on the US State Department’s most-wanted list and carried a reward of up to $3m for information on his whereabouts.

Pakistan Taliban on Monday confirmed the killing and blamed Pakistani intelligence agents for it, without offering evidence or elaborating.

A longer statement from the TTP is expected later on Monday.

Wali is thought to have been close to al-Qaeda founding leader Osama bin Laden and al-Zawahiri but it was not immediately known if there was any link between the August 1 drone attack and Sunday night’s bombing.

In 2014, Wali broke away from TTP and formed his own group, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which carried out some of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan, including a bombing in the eastern city of Lahore in 2016 that killed at least 75 people from the minority Christian community on Easter Sunday.

The group also claimed responsibility for killing two Pakistani employees of the US Consulate in the northwestern city of Peshawar in March 2016.

Khorasani later dissolved Jamaat-ul-Ahrar and rejoined the TTP in the group’s drive to reunify several alienated groups.

The US State Department described him as a former journalist and poet who studied at several religious schools in Pakistan.

There has been a fragile truth between Islamabad and the TTP for the past two months as peace talks brokered by the Afghan Taliban’s Haqqani network take place.

The TTP has launched armed attacks in Pakistan during the past 14 years, fighting for stricter enforcement of Islamic laws in the country, the release of their members who are in government custody and a reduction of the Pakistani military presence in the country’s tribal-dominated regions .

The group has killed nearly 80,000 Pakistanis in almost two decades of violence, according to official estimates.

Islamabad has demanded that the new Taliban rulers next door prevent armed groups from using Afghan territory for attacks inside Pakistan.

Before the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, Islamabad and Kabul often traded blame and accused each other of sheltering armed groups.

Pakistan says it has finished the construction of more than 93 percent of a fence along the border with Afghanistan to prevent cross-border attacks.

Núñez and Salah deny Fulham dream start after Mitrovic storms Liverpool | premier league

Darwin Núñez’s impact was almost immediate. Until his arrival six minutes into the second half Liverpool had been listless, frequently beaten to the punch by Fulham. The Uruguayan, direct, speedy and hungry, soon had the promoted team on the back foot. The £85m man’s first Premier League goal, a smart backheel, came within 15 minutes of his introduction of him and he also played his part in Mohamed Salah’s goal to rescue a draw.

The day belonged to another striker, too. Aleksandar Mitrovic, coming off 43 Championship goals last season and attempting to buck the reputation of being short of Premier League class, scored twice. The first was a trademark header, the second a penalty converted after a foul by a foxed, lunging Virgil van Dijk, to suggest that the Serbian – and Fulham – may belong in the top division.

This was the first time Fulham had avoided defeat in the opening game of a top-flight season after winning promotion, which is a good sign – as was a performance roared on by an appreciative home crowd.

Drawing the opening match of the season is no disaster for Liverpool but Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold struggling and an attack blunted until Núñez’s arrival ought to concern Jürgen Klopp. Jordan Henderson hit the bar in the closing seconds but this was most definitely an escape. “The attitude was not right in the beginning,” said Klopp.

Trouble was coming from the opening seconds when Mitrovic was given space to fire past Alisson’s left post. He might have done far better but that would not be his last chance.

Fulham squeezed Liverpool in midfield from that moment on, making their opponents look woozy, distracted, their frustrations reflected by Alisson angrily clanking a clearance into the lower tier of the new Riverside Stand.

“The result is fine, I don’t think we deserved more than that but the performance was massively improbable,” Klopp said.

It took until the 15th minute for Liverpool to mount a proper attack and Salah’s first attempt on goal of the season was a header that went horribly wide after he lost his bearings.

Until making sweeping changes in the second half, Klopp’s selection had echoed the old Bill Shankly idiom of “same as last season”, with Roberto Firmino the most central attacker and Luis Díaz coming in from the left of the trident. But rather than well-oiled, Liverpool looked rusty.

Marco Silva’s approach to selection was not dissimilar, but far more successful. Two new signings in João Palhinha and Andreas Pereira were introduced, both in midfield. The continuity allowed Fulham to attempt to do to Liverpool what they did to Championship opponents last season: blow them away from kick-off. A brave strategy had the desired effect.

Aleksandar Mitrovic salutes the Fulham fans after scoring his second goal of the afternoon against Liverpool.

“We showed fantastic organization from the start until the end,” said Silva. “Our first half was almost perfect, the way we controlled and worked.”

Joël Matip and Van Dijk were given a heavy workload by Mitrovic while Andy Robertson’s and Alexander-Arnold’s attacking details were curbed by the runs of Bobby Decordova-Reid and Neeskens Kebano, as well as the passing of the busy, impressive Pereira.

The move for Mitrovic’s first goal was begun by Pereira, before Decordova-Reid and Kebano sent away Kenny Tete to cross from the right. Alexander-Arnold, at the back post, had no answer to Mitrovic’s power and goalscorer’s instinct. Questions against the Englishman’s defending will again be raised though Silva was happy to hand the credit to his striker.

“Mitro is not just goals and if somebody thinks that they can forget it,” Silva said. “The job he did this afternoon for the team, his pressure from him, his helping the midfield and helping the backline, it would have been enough even if he had n’t scored.”

As Klopp jogged to the dressing room at half-time he had multiple problems, compounded when Thiago Alcântara pulled up with a muscle injury soon after the restart. In came the former Fulham player Harvey Elliott, with Klopp also choosing to introduce Núñez in place of Firmino to make a near-instant impact.

The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email.

Núñez’s flicked goal was preceded by a similar attempt that was well saved by Marek Rodak. A deft touch from the rampaging substitute also helped Salah score the second equaliser, the Egyptian’s sixth successive goal on opening weekends. Salah’s role in Núñez’s goal further suggested a partnership that may soon consign Sadio Mané to history, salvaging further comfort for Liverpool to go along with avoiding defeat.

This was a highly entertaining minor classic that left Klopp concerned and Silva elated, as two strikers announced themselves on the Premier League stage.
