“Serious questions” being asked as “anger” swirls around Essendon

There are “serious questions” being asked of Essendon in the wake of their heavy defeat to Port Adelaide on Sunday.

The Bombers were smashed by 84 points at Marvel Stadium which was their third loss in their last four games.

Coach Ben Rutten admitted post-match that it was “an embarrassing effort and output” from the players and “not something that we want to stand for and not something our members and supporters should have to watch at any stage”.

However, this is not the first time this has happened in 2022 and as a result, Garry Lyon believes there is plenty of unrest at the club with a lot of concern surrounding how they have performed across their seven-win campaign.

“There’s a number of aspects of this which is concerning if you’re an Essendon fan,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“That is 20,000 people (at Marvel) first of all, and the apathy of the group by the end of it. Port Adelaide were great and clinical in the way they dismantled this side.

“I don’t know what may or may not happen on the back of that performance, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are serious question being asked around Essendon on the back of the year, on the back of the number of times the coaches have had to come out after and say, ‘It’s embarrassing, we won’t stand for it or we won’t tolerate it’.

“Well, it is being tolerated because it keeps happening and a big club like that with 20,000 people and probably 10,000 left by the end of it, from what I could gather, were booing at various stages.

“That is not a club that is in good shape.”

Nathan Buckley also felt it was a largely apathetic showing from the Dons against an opponent that has also struggled in patches this year.

“The club that knocked them over lost their first five and had a bad start similarly to Essendon,” he said.

“They lost their last four games before this game, so Port have been competitive but they haven’t been world beaters.

“Essendon have been in a very similar situation. They’re not about to play finals but they’ve been trying to show some spirit. They had a block of about six weeks of form, but that was a very disappointing performance.

“You described it as apathy and that’s probably where the club looks like it’s at at the moment, on and off the field.”

Lyon believes Essendon would be the story of the day if there wasn’t the distraction of a fascinating Round 23 and impending finals series.

He feels there is a “fog descending” on the club.

“If we weren’t about to embrace a great final round of footy and then turn our minds to finals, if this happened five weeks ago then this would be the biggest story today,” he added.

“The Essendon Football Club would be the biggest story. The coach and his future of him and what they’re going to tolerate and what the board will stand for.

“This is a big, power club and what is happening there will be deemed to be unacceptable.

“What happened yesterday post that game would be a fascinating study because I would imagine there are people at Essendon that just aren’t and won’t accept what’s going on.

“That performance has got a whiff about uncertainty and fog descending on a footy club and it’s a standby and watch what unfolds.

“You get a bit of a sense when things start to rumble along and it might be a watch this space.”

Buckley added: “You can be well-beaten and be beaten by five goals.

“We’re talking about a margin three times that. It doesn’t happen as often and if it does happen, it generally points to a white flag going up and to a lack of capacity to actually stay the course and compete for the full quarters.”

Lyon replied: “And it gets sheeted back to the coach, which is right or wrong.

“When he comes out and says we can’t accept or tolerate it and we won’t, it sounds really hollow when you say that with one game to go – it kind of has been accepted and tolerated and that is why you see this non-existent defensive want, pressure, desire, want to work for one another.

“That’s how it all unfolds and an 84-point margin materializes.”

SEN’s Sam Edmund is forecasting change for the Dons amid plenty of agitation and anger behind the scenes around The Hangar.

“There’s a lot of anger around the Bombers at the moment, so if the patience is wearing thin on where they stood, for many connected to the club that patience is evaporating,” Edmund said.

“Plenty of rumblings last night. We know there will be change brought on by the football department review, their second in three years.

“How far those changes extend is the question some connected to the club were asking and pondering last night.

“They are a powerful club so when things are going well, they’re going very well, and when things are going like they are at the moment, there’s always going to be rumblings. They’re a big coterie club as well with outspoken partners, supporters and members.

“At the moment there’s a lot of anger around the club. They’re a watch for today and this week.”

Essendon completes its lackluster 2022 season against Richmond at the MCG on Saturday night.

James Packer accuses Peter Costello of being secret Crown lobbyist

Nine Entertainment Co has refuted claims that its chairman Peter Costello secretly worked as a lobbyist for casino giant Crown Resorts when it was controlled by billionaire James Packer.

In series of leaked emails revealed by Australian newspaper and sent to a number of Nine employees including Costello and Nine Publishing managing director James Chessell, Packer alleged Costello worked as a “secret Crown lobbyist” in 2011 and “should resign” from all public positions.

A Nine spokesperson said Costello was never employed as a Crown lobbyist and said, “Peter Costello was an adviser to Consolidated Press Holdings in 2011, for a year.” Consolidated Press Holdings is one of Packer’s private investment vehicles, which housed its shares in Crown alongside other assets.

Packer ended his 20-year involvement with Crown Resorts as its largest shareholder earlier this year, when his sold his stake in the company to private equity firm Blackstone. The sale came after a 2019 investigation by this masthead led to a NSW inquiry that found the company was unfit to open its new Sydney casino.

Costello joined the board of Nine in 2013. He was appointed chairman of the media company in 2016. Nine Entertainment is the owner of The Sydney Morning Herald and TheAge.

The Packer family owned the Nine Network between 1956 and 2007. James sold the then television company to private equity firm CVC for about $5 billion.

In a note sent to staff on Monday, Nine Publishing’s managing director James Chessell said he was reluctant to comment publicly on Australian report due to “mental health sensitivities.”

“I’ve received a blizzard of correspondence from Packer since he took exception to something we published in late June. After trying to engage with him at first – which clearly didn’t work – I’ve ignored almost all of it,” Chessell said.

“I never heard a word from Peter Costello about Crown Unmasked before, during or after publication/broadcast.

How much time you should allow to make a connecting flight

Ever been on a delayed flight with a tight connection coming up and wondering if you’re going to make it? It’s stress you don’t need. Right now, when flight delays are all too common, it’s bringing more stress to more travelers.

In a sign of the times, Qantas has just raised its connection times for passengers transferring from a domestic to an international flight. Instead of 60 minutes, the airline will soon have a minimum connection time (MCT) of 90 minutes. The move comes as Qantas struggles with baggage handling delays caused by staff shortages. It’s taking longer to transfer checked luggage between aircraft, but another reason is the ongoing problems with flight delays. Qantas has just posted the worst on-time performance of any carrier in June 2022, with almost half its flights delayed or cancelled, and therefore more time is required between flights.

Minimum connection time

If your journey involves a connection you might be tempted to catch an earlier flight to allow for delays, but how much time should you allow? The answer is the MCT, the least amount of time required for you to get from your arriving flight to your next flight at the transfer point, and for your airline to do the same.

As a rule of thumb, the MCT is 60 minutes between domestic flights, 90 minutes between international flights, but it’s not the same for all airports and in all situations. For example if you arrive on an international flight at Sydney Airport and you’re transferring to a domestic flight, you need to get to the domestic terminal which is several kilometers away. As well as the journey time, you might have to wait up to 30 minutes for the T-Bus service which connects the terminals. That’s on top of the time it takes to collect your baggage and pass through immigration and customs, then check in for your next flight. Even 90 minutes might be cutting it fine. An MCT of 2½ hours is more realistic. By contrast, once you’ve collected your luggage and cleared immigration and customs, transferring between domestic and international flights at Melbourne Airport requires only a short walk. Any change of aircraft that involves domestic-to-international or vice versa requires an MCT of at least two hours. When things are likely to go wrong, such as the baggage handling problems currently experienced at many Australian airports, add another 30 minutes.

However things can get even more complicated. When you take a flight with a stop somewhere in between, you’re usually traveling on a single ticket with the same Passenger Name Record (PNR) for the entire journey. In most cases, it’s the responsibility of the airline you’re booking with or your travel agent to make sure your MCT is sufficient. If you don’t make that connecting flight through no fault of your own, it’s up to the airline to make things right and get you to your final destination as quickly as possible. That applies even if your journey involves different airlines, provided you’re traveling on a single ticket.

But that might not be the case. Say for example you’ve booked a cheap flight to Singapore then made another booking on a different airline to Paris. That’s a split ticket, one flight ticket for each sector. Assuming you have checked baggage you’re going to need to retrieve it in the baggage claim area at Singapore’s Changi Airport and check it in for your next flight. Even though you’re not going outside the terminal, that means passing through Singapore immigration, collecting your bag and going through customs before you can head for departures and check yourself and your baggage in for your Paris flight. Afterwards you’ll need to get through immigration and security before heading to your departure gate, and that’s going to take some time. Exactly how long depends on several variables – the queues at immigration, how long it takes for your checked luggage to arrive, the time it takes to check back in – but anything less than three hours could mean you miss your Paris flight.

If you’re traveling on a split ticket and you don’t make your connecting flight, you’re then regarded as a ‘no-show’ and subject to whatever penalties your airline applies. It could be the total loss of whatever you’ve paid, even if you’ve missed that connecting flight through no fault of your own, for example if your first flight is late in arriving at the transit stop. Worse still, missing one sector of a flight ticket means that all subsequent sectors on the same booking are automatically cancelled. If after Paris you were booked to fly to Athens on the same booking, that booking no longer exists.

Keep The Unreal Engine 5 Showcases Coming, Please

I love Unreal Engine 5 showcase videos. Can’t get enough of them. To be clear, I don’t even care how playable any of them ever end up being, because this is an art feature, not a games review section, and so all I care about is how pretty they look, and tonight’s showcase is very pretty indeed.

This is Airbornea video made by Airborn Studios, an art studio in Berlin who we’ve featured a few times previously, including for their incredible work on some of Overwatch’s skins:

After a hibernation phase of many years, we made the call to revisit the project that our studio is named after. Wondering what it would be like if we dive back into that world with new ideas, a different approach, a mix of Airborne veterans and new team members, and the determination to use the latest technology to push stylized game art and stay true to the core pillars of the work that was done way back. And without further ado, we proudly present the result!

When they say a “hibernation phase”, they aren’t kidding: Airborne as an idea has been kicking around for over 15 years now, with this latest video just the most contemporary expression of the idea that gave the studio its name.

It’s important to note here that this isn’t a game pitch in the sense that this is something that’s actively trying to be made. Instead — they’ve called it a “visual prototype” in this case — it’s a way for artists to be able to work on something that looks like a video game in order to showcase their skills, all the while creating something that’s theirsnot the IP of an employer or a client.

To give you an idea of how much work goes into something like, here’s the full credits list for the project:

Kyle Sandilands reveals he’s returning as Australian Idol judge

Kyle Sandilands has confirmed rumors he’ll be reprising his role as a judge on the returning season of Australian Idol.

The 51-year-old shock jock made the announcement on the Kyle and Jackie O Show on Monday morning, despite getting a text from an unknown figure saying, “Don’t officially announce that you’re on it.”

The new father, who welcomed his first child Otto with fiance Tegan Kynaston last week, revealed he’s set to be the first judge attached to the show – which has been off-air for more than a decade and is finally returning to screens on Channel 7 in 2023.

And true to form, Sandilands said he only agreed to the gig if Seven bosses delivered his contract personally so he could sign the papers live on-air.

“I think this week they’re bringing the contract, I said I’ll only sign it on the radio show, so all the big head honchos have to march into the studio with the contract. I’ll sign it live on-air,” Sandilands said.

Sandilands also claimed he was heavily involved in recruitment for his three co-judges, while he ruled out Osher Gunsberg’s return as host due to his multiple Channel 10 hosting duties.

“They can’t sign on someone else unless I sign off on it… I’m not going to be doing the show with a bunch of knobs,” Sandilands said.

“I’ve got a long list of knobs I won’t work with. I’d like at least one other Australian, and I would love a big name US and a big name UK, but it all depends, everyone’s touring around … But there’s a lot of big stars interested.”

When pressed by Jackie whether any of the original judges would be returning, including Marsha Hines, Ian Dickson and Mark Holden, Sandilands said, “No, none of them.”

“I’m the only one who’s still alive, I feel the others have all passed away… I mean alive on TV,” he clarified.

Sandilands said the show would follow a similar format, which would see contestants audition around Australia before a top 12 is chosen for live shows.

As for whether he would soften his infamous brutal honesty, Sandilands said he’d be sticking to what he knows.

“I like The Voicebut I won’t be one of them wishy washedy Voice judges that say, ‘No matter how disgusting you are to look at, you’ve got a great voice.’

“I’m not interested in that sh*t. I can only be myself.”

At this point, Sandilands got a text advising him not to officially announce his role.

“Yeah, okay. Well, I haven’t signed on yet but I’ve verbally agreed,” he added.

australian idol aired for seven seasons on Channel 10 from 2003 until 2009, and made big stars of contestants including Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy and Casey Donovan.

In 2020, the Seven Network announced at their annual upfronts that they would be reviving the series.

St Kilda Saints urged to put stars on trade table, Leigh Montagna, list management, Brad Hill, Zak Jones, Jack Billings, Jade Gresham

St Kilda great Leigh Montagna has implored the club to trade out some of its star senior players to bring more youth into the club in a “reset”, saying he thinks it “needs to go back to go forward.”

The Saints had their final hopes dashed after losing to Brisbane, falling to 11-10 to continue St Kilda’s drop off after a promising 5-1 start to the season.

Since Round 7 St Kilda has ranked bottom six in the ‘Core Four’ stats — with the footy (15th), without the footy, clearance and post-clearance contest (all 12th).

Watch every blockbuster AFL match this weekend Live & Ad-Break Free In-Play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

“They’re in a real predicament … this is 15 rounds of football, it’s a bottom-four profile, so they have really struggled with their game,” Montagna said on Fox Footy’s First Crack.

Asked if their issues lie with personnel or system, Montagna said: “I think it’s a combination of both.”

The Saints’ finals hopes are over (Photo by Daniel Pockett/AFL Photos/via Getty Images)Source: FOX SPORTS

It comes after St Kilda has aggressively recruited players via trade and free agency over the last four years, bringing Paddy Ryder (35 years old), Dan Hannebery (32), Tom Campbell (31), Brad Hill, Dean Kent, Mason Wood, Brad Crouch (all 29), Jarrod Lienert, Zak Jones (both 28), Dougal Howard (27), Dan Butler, Jack Hayes (both 26) and Jack Higgins (24) into the fold.

Looking at the age profile of those players combined with the rest of the senior core, Montgana questioned how much upside the Saints’ list has.

“This is the concern for St Kilda supporters when you think about where the improvement is going to come from in the years to come,” he said.

“How much room for improvement have they got these guys? How high is their ceiling? And that’s in conjunction with their core group of Seb Ross, Tim Membrey, Jimmy Webster, Jack Sinclair, Jack Billings, Rowan Marshall and Jack Steele, who are all 26 plus years old as well.

“There’s not a lot of ceiling room within the core group of players on top of that profile… the upside is a very small margin.”

“Heartbreak” awaits whoever finishes 6th | 02:27

Montagna did praise young guns Max King, Cooper Sharman (both 22), Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (20), Marcus Windhager and Mitch Owens (both 19), who’ve joined the club over the same four-year period, but said he had “question marks” on their other youngsters.

He believes St Kilda should follow Port Adelaide’s blueprint from post 2018 and trade out their players with currency to try and bounce back quickly.

“I think they need to go back to go forward,” Montagna said.

“I think they need to trade out some of those players they’ve brought in and bring in some more young talent and reset — Brad Hill, Zak Jones and maybe Jack Billings or Jade Gresham to try and get some other young talent in.

“I look at Port Adelaide — they went through a period for five years where they were mid-table — then traded Chad Wingard, Jasper Pittard and Jared Polec when they were playing good footy — Jack Hombsch, Paddy Ryder and Dougal Howard.

“They made some change and got in those young players — Zak Butters, Xavier Duursma, Connor Rozee and Mitch Georgiades — then all of a sudden played in back-t0-back preliminary finals (in 2020 and 2021).

“I think there’s some concerns there for St Kilda, they need to have a real hard think about where their list is at moving forward.”

Man in custody after woman’s body found in Bluewater bush

A 38-year-old man, who has not been identified, was arrested around 8.30pm last night in Proserpine.

Queensland Police say he was taken into custody in Mackay “without incident”, and is assisting with inquiries following the discovery of a 44-year-old woman’s body in Bluewater, near Townsville.

A mother-of-four has been killed, her body found in bushland in north Queensland. (Nine)

Police also allege the man was involved in a shooting incident with a passing motorist on the Bruce Highway near Yarlboroo yesterday morning.

“He allegedly pointed a shotgun at a passing motorist, allegedly firing one shot into the side of her vehicle,” he said.

“The victim, who was not known to the man, was not physically harmed during the incident.”

A group of teenagers found the 44-year-old woman’s body yesterday, close to a popular fishing spot in the seaside suburb of Bluewater.

Queensland Police say it’s believed the woman died at the spot.

“It appears that she would have known who her attacker was,” Queensland Police Service Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said.

“They probably went to that location together.

“We believe she died at that location.”

A weapon was used in the crime but the police did not confirm what it was.

At this stage, police don’t believe the woman’s death is domestic violence related.

The woman’s four children, aged between 14 and 24, don’t live in the area.

Detectives attached to Operation Uniform Umbara from Townsville will travel to Mackay today to continue investigations.

Anyone who was in the area at this time who may have information, CCTV or dash cam footage is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
