Manase Fainu detained over Wattle Grove church stabbing

She was satisfied Fainu had been convicted of an offense for which he will be sentenced to full-time imprisonment and was not satisfied special or exceptional circumstances existed to refuse the application. It was granted and Fainu was taken into custody.

The judge was concerned by the lapse in time since he had last sought psychiatric treatment and that he had been resistant as recently as the weekend, and said a significant amount of time had passed for Fainu to prepare himself mentally and financially for custody.

Williams said while Fainu had been “substantially in the glare of the media” it did not amount to a relevant circumstance, but would be appropriate to raise during sentencing.

She asked that he be immediately triaged by Justice Health and referred to a treating psychiatrist.

Williams acknowledged a character reference from Manly coach Des Hasler who said he “genuinely believes that Manase had it all and more” and he had no doubt Fainu was “destined for greatness”.

Defense barrister Margaret Cunneen, SC, said Hasler described a “Superman complex” faced by young men, believing no harm can come to them, as magnified by the pressure of professional sport.

“He also makes the point that, these last three years, his absence in the NRL can never be retrieved,” Cunneen said.

She had submitted that Fainu’s mental health was “extremely precarious”, and if he had presented to hospital over the weekend, “it would’ve been in the newspapers straight away”.

“It’s extraordinary, but a rugby league player in Sydney … found guilty of any offence, is subject to more publicity than any other person in society, perhaps, unless it was a famous actor or some such thing,” Cunneen said.

She argued Fainu would struggle to adjust in custody, having “suffered a most enormous downfall, an unthinkable downfall”, and his father had taken ill with suspected heart problems after the verdict.

Counselor Jan Earl, who runs Elite Athletes Wellbeing Services, said Fainu developed a dependence on prescription drugs after shoulder surgery in 2019 but had been sober since 2020 and did not drink alcohol as it was against his church values. His former psychiatrist died from cancer earlier this year.

Earl told the court Fainu had exceptional wealth and rose through the ranks but if he was incarcerated, “his career is definitely over.”

She said that while subject to the NRL’s no-fault stand-down policy, Fainu had been “shunned like a black cat”, and money was used from the 2023 rugby league contracts of two of his younger brothers to pay for his legal fees.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Hasler said Fainu had remained active and involved with the club and described the verdict as “just a shock”.

Manly chief executive Tony Mestrov said comment was limited given Fainu’s barrister had raised an intention to appeal. Cunneen previously said the verdict was a “perverse” one on the evidence.

“As per we’ve done throughout this whole process, we’re going to support Manase in any way we can, particularly from a wellbeing point of view,” Mestrov said.

Fainu will be sentenced at a later date.

Aldi’s bargain dupe for luxury Le Creuset cast iron cookware

Culinary enthusiasts on a budget have rejoiced after Aldi again released their bargain dupe of $600 Le Creuset cookware.

Sydney influencer Adrian Widjy excitedly took to TikTok to show off the re-released range at his local Aldi store.

The Crofton cookware range is available in four colors and is part of Aldi’s special buys collection.

“Time to run to Aldi,” the video started.

“They are back stocking affordable cast iron cookware. Most expensive at $30, while most at about $20.

“From frying pan, bake roaster, griller and more, with four color options.”

According to the Australian Le Creuset website, a cast iron round casserole dish can cost anywhere from $340 to $1,200, depending on the size and color of the item.

Aldi’s bargain dupe of the item has racked up a cult following online since it first went on sale in 2020, and fans are elated for its return.

“These are sensational to cook with” one person said.

“Definitely running out to get some more.”

“I bought one last year, and honestly it’s the best bread I’ve ever owned” another replied.

“Better than my $200 Scanpan.”

The range is part of Aldi’s special buys available from the 13th of August, and are only available in-store for a limited time.

According to Aldi, the pieces boast a durable three-layer enamel coating and is suitable for all stovetops including gas, electric, glass ceramic and induction.

The collection includes a French Pan ($29.99), Dutch oven ($26.99), Saucepan ($19.99), Roaster ($26.99), Griddle Pan ($19.99) and Frying pan ($19.99).

This is not the first time the German supermarket has released budget-friendly dupes for designer products.

Last month Aldi released their very own blanket hoodies, with a design strikingly similar to the wildly popular Oodie.

Priced at just $29.99, they were much cheaper than Oodies that retail for $109.

Galaxy Watch loses a bezel, gains durable sapphire in 2022 – Pickr

The neat circular control ring on the Galaxy Watch is gone this year, as Samsung offers improvements to the glass up top, plus a little more.

Spare a thought for owners of a smartwatch with a broken or severely scratched screen, because owning a wristwatch didn’t always lead you down that path.

These days, it’s very possible that the person you see looking down at their smartwatch will have a screen on their wrist as broken as the screen in their pocket, because smartwatch glass is often just that fragile, with durable options costing so much more.

Some of the more popular smartwatch models tend to be divided by price and glass quality, with you needing to spend a whole lot more in order to get something with more durable sapphire glass, over an ion-strengthened glass which may only be strengthened to the point of not breaking one or two of then ten times your watch accidentally brushes a wall the wrong way.

We’ve seen broken Apple Watch screens before, and they’re not particularly pretty or friendly to fingers, but there are ways around them, such as watch cases or watch screen protectors, unsightly as some of this can be.

The better solution is to provide better glass quality up top, though it’s something device makers can charge a fair amount extra for.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is a good example of that, with the regular ion-strengthened glass variant with an aluminum case starting from $599, while the stainless steel model with sapphire crystal, starts at $1049, nearly twice the cost. Sapphire crystal is typically regarded as the glass quality you want on a watch, and it’s no surprise that Apple charges a little more for it.

This year, however, folks buying a Samsung Galaxy Watch may end up getting sapphire crystal glass up top for protecting their wrist-worn time and notifications, though they will end up missing another feature from previous models.

Announced alongside the 2022 Galaxy foldable phones and new noise canceling Galaxy Buds 2 Pro earphones was a couple of new wearables also on the way, as the Samsung Galaxy Watch hits version 5 and separates into two models, the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro .

The two models are the latest wearables to sport the “Galaxy” name, and they’ll both be topped by sapphire crystal, which Samsung says is harder than previous generations, making it just that little bit more durable, as well.

But there’s more going on there, with sensors underneath to track heart rate, blood oxygen, stress, skin temperature, sleep patterns with sore detection, and an electrocardiograph (ECG), something which appeared in last year’s Galaxy Watch 4, alongside another way of the watch, a circular bezel similar to what controlling chronometers offer.

This year, that control ring is gone, with the watch models becoming more like a touchscreen phone, only one that’s circular, kind of like the Galaxy Watch Active models from the past.

The Galaxy Watch 5 models will run a Google operating system and provide apps and assistance Android users might already be familiar with, and thanks to some of Samsung’s additions, you’ll even be able to type messages on a circular keyboard found on the circular watch .

There will also be three sizes of the Watch5 model, with both a 40mm aluminum and 44mm aluminum Galaxy Watch 5, while a more durable 45mm titanium will appear in the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, the latter of which appears focused on the sporting crowd.

Prices appear fairly competitive with other smartwatch models, fetching a starting price of $499 and $549 for the 40mm and 44mm aluminum Galaxy Watch 5 models without 4G connectivity, while a mobile version will add $100 to each.

Meanwhile, the 45mm titanium Galaxy Watch5 Pro will cost $799 and $849 for the Bluetooth wireless or 4G models respectively, when they launch in Australia in September.

Magpies offered De Goey advice

Collingwood lost its first game since Round 9 on the weekend to Sydney and now needs a win in the final round of the season to guarantee a top four position.

Craig McRae’s side suffered a 27-point loss to the Swans on Sunday at the SCG in a clash where the Magpies threatened a comeback for much of the second half that didn’t eventuate.

With the margin 23 points at three quarter time, Collingwood has made a theme of final quarter comebacks in recent victories, but couldn’t pull it off on this occasion.

David King isn’t concerned the loss could halt the club’s immense momentum.

“Eventually someone was going to get them, you can’t keep winning like that,” King told SEN’s Whateley

“But what he (McRae) has been able to do is give a club an opportunity to still finish top four, it’s been an unbelievable ride this year, so there’s no reason why they can’t gather and go again next week.”

But discussing why the Pies’ couldn’t dominate the final quarter on the scoreboard, King threw up the absence of Jordan De Goey as a reason.

De Goey was a late out with a hip flexor issue ahead of Sunday’s match after two strong games since returning from a quad injury.

He’d averaged 24 disposals, seven clearances, 4.5 inside 50s and 1.5 goals in the last fortnight, but Collingwood missed his “spark” against the Swans.

“What it (the loss) does do, it highlights what life’s like without De Goey,” King stated.

“When you just needed that one spark on the weekend it wasn’t there, when you haven’t got that player (it becomes more difficult).

“He goes where the problem is. Getting beaten in the midfield? Put De Goey in. He’ll go in and it’s all rip, tear and bust, it’s a classier version of Jake Stringer. He’s their Shai Bolton.

“Going well again? Slip him forward after the center bounce, so just be careful what you wish for with De Goey is my advice if you’re Collingwood.”

It led to King urging the Magpies to hold onto midfielder-forward. The club put off contract talks with the 26-year-old earlier in the year after an off-field incident and he’s understood to have drawn interest from St Kilda.

He doesn’t have a deal for 2023.

“I wouldn’t be rushing him out the door because you need him, this group needs Jordan De Goey,” King continued.

“If they’re to have success in the next two or three years, he’s not just a part of it, he’s a major driver.

“I know he might cost a bit more and there’s going to be some late nights where you’re going to think, ‘I hope the phone doesn’t ring’, and some off-season occasions when you think, ‘Gee, where is he?’

“But on game day, those two hours, when he’s not there as opposed to when he is, they’re poles apart.”

Collingwood requires a win against Carlton in the final round of the home and away season to lock in a double chance in the finals series.

UWA law graduate Luigi Rayapen pleads guilty to sexually assaulting woman on Rottnest Island

A former law student at the University of Western Australia has been told he is facing a possible jail term after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman during post exam celebrations at Rottnest Island.

Luigi Ignace Rayapen, 26, admitted abusing the woman, who was in her 20s, as she tried to sleep in a bed in a bungalow on the holiday island in the early hours of July 1, 2020.

The District Court was told the woman, who cannot be identified, did not know Rayapen, but said he could stay the night at the accommodation she was sharing with others after they had been out drinking.

Three other people were in the room when the abuse happened, including a friend of the woman who was in the same bed.

State Prosecutor Rebekah Sleeth said the woman woke up to Rayapen rolling her over and groping her but she pretended to remain asleep in the hope he would stop what he was doing.

However, Rayapen did not and so she repeatedly told him to stop and kept pushing his hand away from her body.

She also tried to kick her friend who was sleeping nearby.

The court heard Rayapen also squeezed her breast so hard it left a bruise and he also bit her on the face while trying to kiss her.

It was not until the woman grabbed Rayapen around the throat that he eventually backed away.

Ms Sleeth said the woman then woke up her friend and told them what happened.

Rayapen was told to leave but he would not and ended up staying the night at the bungalow.

Guilty pleas entered for two charges

The court heard Rayapen later said to the woman he was “sorry” and that he hoped she could forgive him.

However, when she saw a police car driving past the bungalow, she flagged it down and reported what happened.

Rayapen was originally facing four charges, but he pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault causing bodily harm and one count of [digital] sexual penetration without consent.

The remaining two charges were discontinued on what Ms Sleeth said were “public interest” grounds.

Rayapen’s barrister, Julie Condon QC, requested the matter be adjourned, telling the court the defense needed more time to prepare its submissions.

Rayapen had ‘mental health issues’

She said they may include a psychiatric report on Rayapen whom she said had “some mental health issues.”

Ms Condon also said her client had recently completed his degree.

Judge Laurie Levy agreed to release Rayapen on bail until the sentencing hearing, but he told him not to take that as an indication of the penalty he may receive.

“I don’t want you to think because you’ve been granted bail you are not going to jail,” Judge Levy said.

Judge Levy said people “commonly” go to jail for these types of offenses.

Rayapen is due back in court next month.

While studying law at UWA, Rayapen was on the committee of the Blackstone Society which describes itself as the peak representative body for students in the law faculty.

BlueScope posts $2.8b record, reaffirms commitment to reducing carbon profit emissions

Australia’s largest steelmaker BlueScope has signaled its intention to reinvest record profits into capital works including extensive carbon abatement programs.

BlueScope posted today a full-year profit after tax of $2.8 billion for last financial year — a 135 per cent increase on 2020-21 and the company’s best-ever profit result.

Managing director and chief executive Mark Vassella said the result reflected strong demand in Australia and the United States for building and construction products.

“We have seen building and construction continue to be strong, residential housing, industrial commercial have been strong,” Mr Vassella said.

“Some of the stimulus work that was put in as we went into the pandemic, the home builder programs for example, we have been the beneficiaries of that.”

Mr Vassella said the result would enable the company to continue to invest $1 billion in its Port Kembla blast furnace reline project to modernize its raw steelmaking technology.

The outlay will cover investment in decarbonisation via new technologies such as hydrogen electrolysers and work with miner Rio Tinto to produce new types of iron.

“We have things we can do every day to continue to improve our energy use, continue to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions but we’re also investing in some of the longer-term breakthrough technologies that aren’t yet technically or commercially viable,” he said.

Will work with government on emissions

As one of Australia’s top 20 carbon emitters, BlueScope would be impacted by a foreshadowed tightening of the federal government’s safeguard mechanism, which is a way to rein in national emissions and meet legislated targets.

“We are well prepared to deal with the safeguard mechanisms,” Mr Vassella said.

The PS4 Sold ‘Twice As Many’ Units As The Xbox One, Court Papers Show

We now have a clear idea of how many Xbox One consoles Microsoft sold during its lifetime and that Sony got “twice as many” into homes before it called time on production.

The news arrives courtesy of court documents filed during Microsoft’s ongoing legal battle with CADE, Brazil’s competition authority. The reason for the filings is that Microsoft is currently attempting to defend its historically expensive acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The news was initially spotted by GameLuster and reported on Eurogamer. Page 18, paragraph 46 of the court filing states (and understand this translation is brought to you via Google Translate), “Sony has surpassed Microsoft in terms of console sales and install base, having sold more than twice as many (than) Xbox in the last generation.”

Microsoft, rather famously, stopped reporting on Xbox One sales figures in 2015. The decision to cease reporting sales data came after an abortive launch and confirmation that Sony’s PlayStation 4 was leaving it behind.

Sony confirmed in January that it had sold more than 116 million PS4 consoles. However, it recently updated that stat to 117.2 million in total lifetime sales, putting it behind only the PS2’s record-setting 155 million units sold. If the claims in the Brazilian court documents are to be believed, the Xbox One landed well south of that figure, coming in between 50 and 60 million units sold.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad backed up these numbers.

The papers also gave some insight into what Microsoft considers Xbox’s current market position. As you might assume, Xbox’s position is that it wants to promote its Xbox Game Pass platform over directly competing with Sony on hardware. In its own words, Xbox has made the decision to “move away from a strategy of ‘device-centric’ business towards a more consumer-centric” or “gamer-centric” platform, like Game Pass.

Further, it dismisses Sony’s concerns that the “inclusion of Activision Blizzard content in the Xbox Game Pass catalog would represent a ‘tipping point’ in the market”.

So, there you go. After years of lampshading the Xbox One’s final tally, we finally have a clear picture of how many units it actually sold. Another weird gaming mystery solved by totally unrelated court proceedings.

Anne Heche taken off life support after car crash

Anne Heche, an entrancing actor whose versatility powered an admirable career in TV and film spanning four decades, is no longer on life support.

“Anne Heche has been peacefully taken off life support,” a representative for the actress’ family told CNN. Heche’s car crashed into a Los Angeles home and erupted into flames on August 5.

After the accident, Heche experienced a “severe anoxic brain injury,” depriving her brain of oxygen, among other critical injuries following the crash, her family and friends said in a statement to CNN.

Heche, an award-winning actor, appeared in films like the 1998 “Psycho” remake and the rom-com “Six Days Seven Nights” alongside Harrison Ford. She also directed a segment of a 2000 HBO film “If These Walls Could Talk 2” and in her 2001 memoir from her, she revealed her lifelong struggles with mental illnesses after being abused by her father.

In 1987, she made her TV debut on the soap opera “Another World,” a role for which she won a Daytime Emmy. After leaving the show, she began her film career, appearing in acclaimed films including “Donnie Brasco” and “Wag the Dog.”

When Heche and Ellen DeGeneres began dating in 1997 – around the same time DeGeneres came out in real life and on her titular sitcom – they quickly became one of the most famous same-sex couples in the world. The two separated in 2000.

Last year, I told Page Six her relationship with DeGeneres resulted in her losing roles, calling herself “patient zero of cancel culture.”

Still, she said, she considered herself “part of the change” that helped normalize same-sex relationships in mainstream culture.

“I’m a part of it,” she told Page Six. “It is a badge of honour.”

In memoriam: The famous people who have died in 2022

In her 2001 memoir, “Call Me Crazy,” she said her father sexually abused her as a child, and she experienced mental illnesses for much of the first 30 years of her life. She told CNN’s Larry King in an interview that year her de ella personality fragmented between herself and a personality she invented as a child to adapt to the abuse.

“I had to live through a lot of life to get to the place where I am now,” she told King. “I had to see truths and work through shame, and I’m very grateful for every step that I took. I don’t think that I could have handled it sooner.”

In 2004, Heche appeared on Broadway in “Twentieth Century,” for which she was nominated for a Tony. In more recent years, Heche returned to television, appearing on series like “The Brave,” “Quantico” and “Chicago PD” In 2020, she competed on the 29th season of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Heche’s Hollywood peers responded to news of her crash with support. Her ex-partner and “Men in Trees” co-star James Tupper, with whom she shares one of her two sons, wrote on Instagram: “Thoughts and prayers for this lovely woman, actress and mother tonight Anne Heche. We love you. “

NRL 2022: Cameron Ciraldo Bulldogs coach, pundits react, Bulldogs roster, Who is the Bulldogs coach?, Matt Burton contract, player signings

Rugby league legend Mark Geyer has made a bold prediction following the Bulldogs’ appointment of rookie coach Cameron Ciraldo — while Fox League’s Andrew Voss is concerned the club’s “gamble” could backfire.

Ciraldo inked a five-year contract to join the Belmore club from 2023 onwards in a deal reportedly worth around $800,000-per-season.

Stream every game of every round of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership Season Live & Ad-Break Free During Play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The 38-year-old was the hottest property on the coaching market following the axing of multiple coaches including Trent Barrett, but in the end NRL supremo Phil Gould got his man.

Ciraldo has been Ivan Cleary’s assistant for several years and former Panther Mark Geyer believes his appointment means Matt Burton’s tenure with the Bulldogs will almost certainly extend past 2023 after knocking back his player option for 2024.

“He’ll be the youngest coach in the NRL, 38-years of age and signs a five-year deal as I said it’s a major coup, but what it does is makes Matt Burton, now his signature will be a lot longer, he’ll sign on for longer,” Geyer said on Triple M.

“That means that Kikau won’t get cold feet, it means Reed Mahoney won’t get cold feet, the Fox (Josh Addo Carr).

“It’s a massive signing, a lot of people will be saying look he hasn’t done much but, he’s been an assistant coach but what he’s done is he’s very articulate in the way he prepares.”

Geyer also believes the Bulldogs are set for a “special” rebuild, going as far to say they could be premiership contenders within five years.

“It’s all about the team with Cameron Ciraldo it’s never about him so I think this is a major, major boost for the Bulldogs in the next five years,” he said.

“Cameron Ciraldo will, I’m not going to say it but they’re going to do something special in five years but they’re going to be close I would say.

“I reckon they’re going to be close to pulling off the biggest prize of all within five years.”

The Daily Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield echoed Geyer’s remarks — but explained assistants who have been mentored by elite coaches don’t always become successful bosses themselves.

“At 38 he’ll be the youngest coach in the NRL but a terrific talent, he’s been a great right hand man for Ivan Cleary at the Panthers with all their success in recent years,” Rothfield said on the Big Sports Breakfast.

“He’s their minister for defense there, he’s the one who designed all the strategies to keep their line intact which has been so outstanding in recent times.

“Look the only thing I will say is just because you’re out of a Penrith system or Melbourne system it doesn’t automatically make you a great coach.

“I wrote this morning about Trent Barrett only having a 40 per cent win record despite the rap on ‘Baz’ (Barrett) when he came out of Penrith and Garth Brennan too.

“You look at guys like Adam O’Brien who came out of Melbourne and had a year under Trent Robinson.

“It doesn’t mean you’re going to be an immediate success but I’ve got this feeling that Cameron Ciraldo will prove that theory wrong, he’s got what it takes.

“I think it’s enormous for Canterbury and that he knows the pathways so well at Penrith, he’s been there over a decade on their coaching staff.

“He knows how to bring young players through, I think it’s a huge move for the Bulldogs.

“Put them (Kikau and Mahoney) in with Matty Burton and the rest of the team I think they’re going to be a real top eight chance next year.”

While many are backing Ciraldo to be a success, rugby league commentator Andrew Voss stated he wouldn’t be “signing a rookie coach for five years”.

Five-year coaching contracts have in the past gone pear-shaped — Anthony Seibold’s short-lived Broncos deal being the most recent.

Voss explained there are only a handful of coaches across the league that could warrant the long-term contract signed by Ciraldo.

“Any five-year deal, there’s an element of a gamble in it, even with a player.”

“But five years for an untried coach?” Penrith Panthers legend Greg Alexander asked.

Voss continued: “What if they haven’t played finals in a couple of years? I think five years is too much.

“Five years for a rookie coach? Trying to think of a coach you’d sign for five years, I think you’ve got to have the runs on the board.

“(Craig) Bellamy, (Trent) Robinson, (Ivan) Cleary, I don’t think there’s too many more.

“I’m not signing a rookie coach for five years.

“But, I wish Cameron Ciraldo all the very best.”
