Hulking Aussie Jordan Mailata had murderous intentions on Saturday after New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams delivered a boneheaded moment.

Williams hit Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts out of bounds on a third-down play in the first quarter that drew a penalty flag and the ire of Eagles coach Nick Sirianni.

On third-and-5 at the Jets’ 35-yard-line, Hurts scrambled toward the Jets’ sideline. He clearly was out of bounds when Williams drilled him. Sirianni was incensed and walked onto the field, screaming in the direction of the Jets sideline and head coach Robert Saleh. Hurts was not injured and continued the drive, which ended with him throwing a 22-yard touchdown to Dallas Goedert.

Saleh was not happy with Williams and said he spoke to Sirianni after the game, a 24-21 Jets win, about the play.

“Egregiously awful by Quincy,” Saleh said. “He knows that. He knows better. Those are the plays Quincy has to get out of his game if he wants to become the linebacker that we all think he can be.”

Mailata, the Eagles left tackle, was quick to remonstrate with Williams as the monster came storming in and let him know about it.

NBCS Philadelphia journalist Dave Zangaro wrote: “Jordan Mailata said he was “seeing red” when Jalen Hurts took that shot on the sideline. He wouldn’t repeat what he said at the moment.”

The hit left fans watching on incensed as the angry reactions flooded in towards Williams and his horror shot.

The Jets will be sweating on the outcome of their own quarterback after Zach Wilson went down on the second drive of the game.

Wilson scrambled and went down with no contact, leaving many to fear he had torn his ACL which would end his season before it even officially begins.

“I’m always concerned until you get the final evaluation,” Saleh said. “We’ve walked off the field with very positive thoughts and it’s been opposite. We’ve walked off the field with bad initial readings and it’s been the opposite. I’m just going to let it play out and we’ll see.”

AFL 2022: Max King torched, Brisbane Lions defeat St Kilda, finals, ladder

St Kilda had it all to play for on Friday night against the Brisbane Lions, but they repeatedly shot themselves in the foot.

A thrilling third quarter saw them come back to life and put the Lions to the sword. But when it mattered most, they fell apart.

The Saints had ample opportunities in the final quarter to run away with the contest, but continually threw it away in front of goal.

Young star forward Max King was the prime culprit, finishing the night with five behinds to his name as his set shot routine abandoned him.

The yips seemed to have taken a hold as his routine changed on multiple occasions.

At the other end of the ground the Lions capitalized on their opportunities. The Lions’ last five scoring shots netted them four goals and one behind. The Saints’ last seven scoring shots were all behinds.

St Kilda fans in the stands were routinely spotted by the cameras with their head in their hands after each miss in front of goal.

“The set shots were relatively easy, they weren’t on tight angles. You just have to go back and suck up the pressure and put them through the big sticks,” Jonathan Brown said on Fox Footy.

Former St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt said King had zero confidence in his kicking by the end.

“He’s had four shots from directly in front and in the end he just looked completely devoid of confidence, his routine was broken,” he said.

“To the point that we watched him pretty closely the last five to 10 minutes and I don’t think he wanted the ball.”

Garry Lyon added: “That’s a horrible night. I agree that in the end he was saying I don’t want to go near it.”

Footy fans watching on were quick to lambaste King for his horror night out, when St Kilda were desperate for the win.

CODE Sports’ Daniel Cherny wrote: “There is no more excruciating sight in football than watching Max King kicking for goal.”

St Kilda will now need a minor miracle to qualify for the finals after losing to the Cam Rayner-inspired Brisbane Lions by 15 points.

Brisbane opened up a 26-point buffer late in the second quarter, but for the third game in a row, they either gave up a sizeable lead, or had one eaten into significantly, as the Saints exploded in the third quarter to lead by five points, putting the Lions’ top-four ambitions in peril.

The Saints will likely drop to 10th this weekend, meaning they will have to not only beat the Swans in Sydney in the final round next week, but will also need a raft of other results to go their way to make the finals.

The win launches Brisbane into a second spot on the ladder currently and keeps their hopes alive of securing a final home.

The Gold Coast’s tenuous final hopes are alive and kicking – but only just – after enigmatic

key forward Mabior Chol helped the Suns claim a thrilling three-point win over West Coast

at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.

The Suns led by 31 points early in the fourth term after a Chol goal but the Eagles stormed

home, kicking the next five majors to close with two points from the home side.

West Coast’s Jake Waterman had a kick to put the Eagles in front but hit the man on the

mark only to see the laconic Chol kick his career-high fifth goal soon after in his 50th senior

match.

The Eagles got within three points of the Suns with 38 seconds left after Waterman made

amends and kicked truly but a Malcolm Rosas goal put the four premiership points on ice.

Touk Miller and Noah Anderson were outstanding for the Suns in the midfield while Izak

Rankine kicked three goals for the home side while Jack Darling booted a bag of six goals for

the Eagles who were very well served by defending Tom Barrass.

The Suns are two wins outside the top eight with three games remaining in the season with

a 9-10 record, the second-best season returned for the Gold Coast since their inception.

The Eagles closed to within 13 points of the Suns on two occasions in the third term with

Darling taking his tally to four goals for the day in West Coast’s fightback.

The visitors kicked the first three goals after halftime until Anderson stopped the rot with a

lovely goal in traffic for the Gold Coast who enjoyed a 25-point advantage at the last change

after Chol kicked truly after the siren after a spectacular mark.

On the back of dominating inside 50 entries (33-17), clearances (23-14) and contested

possessions (69-53), the Suns took a commanding 30-point buffer into halftime.

Rankine had three goals to his name by the main break as the Gold Coast booted five goals

in each of the opening two quarters after a sloppy and sluggish start when the Eagles kicked

the opening two majors of the game.

The Suns were jolted into action and responded emphatically with the next five goals of the

match with Rankine’s showstopper from near the boundary line and Chol booting two goals

on the way to a 16-point cushion at quarter-time.

The Gold Coast continued on their merry way in the second term, extending their lead to as

much as 37 points with the Suns picking the West Coast backline apart with their glut of

possession and field position.

West Coast’s mid-season draft pick up Jai Culley may be having next weekend off. Culley

appeared to raise his right elbow and make high contact with Suns midfielder Noah

Anderson in the second quarter. The contact did not appear to be too severe as Anderson

played on but it was an ugly and completely unnecessary action for the 19-year-old who was

playing his third senior match for the Eagles.

He was subbed out of the game with a hamstring injury in the fourth term.
