Nick Kyrgios slams ‘disgusting behaviour’ of fans who heckled Daniil Medvedev after loss at the Montreal Masters

Nick Kyrgios has slammed the “disgusting” behavior of some tennis fans, after video circulated on social media of Daniil Medvedev being heckled after his second round loss to the Australian in Montreal.

In a video re-tweeted by Kyrgios, Medvedev is shown being called a “loser” as he walks towards the locker room with security.

Medvedev then stops, turning and speaking with the fan, as someone shouts “you respect us and we respect you.”

Others can be heard imploring the fan to apologise.

On Twitter, Kyrgios labeled the fan’s behavior as “disgusting”.

“This is the best we have in the sport, fans need to show some respect.”

The interaction came after Kyrgios had defeated the Russian world number one at the ATP’s Montreal Masters, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-2.

At a press conference for the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Medvedev said he had felt compelled to approach the spectator.

“When someone mocks me, I’ll respond,” he said.

“It would be bad to let people shout bad things at me and just keep walking. I will ask what his problem is.”

Medvedev said he had also talked to the father of the fan who had called him a “loser”.

“The father of the guy said something to me also — I say: ‘Educate your kid’,” Medvedev said.

Nick Kyrgios’s winning streak comes to an end at the Montreal Masters at the hands of Hubert Hurkacz

Nick Kyrgios gave it all he had but, in the end, in the midday Montreal heat, there were just too many aches and pains.

The mercurial Australian’s nine-match winning singles run came to a disappointing end in the quarter-finals of the Montreal Masters 1000, worn down by fatigue, a sore back, and the relentless serving of Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

The number eight seed won 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 with the final set, which took just 27 minutes after the first two lasted 38 and 41 respectively.

Kyrgios did not call a trainer or complain, but looked off the pace physically. He also had plenty on his mind with his parents of him unwell.

“I honestly don’t care [about losing the winning streak],” Kyrgiossaid.

“I’ve been away from home, away from my mum, away from my dad.

“They’re not very well at the moment. So I don’t really care about ‘no winning streak’.

“I got two more tournaments [Cincinnati and the US Open] left before I can go home.”

Serena Williams, 23-time grand slam women’s singles champion, hints at retirement from tennis

Serena Williams says she is “evolving away from tennis” as she hinted at retiring from the sport she dominated for much of her career with 23 women’s grand slam singles titles.

On Monday, Williams played only her second singles match since she returned to action at Wimbledon in June after a year-long absence from competition, beating Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz in straight sets to reach the second round of the Toronto Open.

The 40-year-old won her last grand slam crown in 2017 and has been chasing an elusive 24th title that would see her draw level with Australia’s Margaret Court, who holds the record for most majors.

“I have never liked the word retirement,” Williams wrote in a Vogue article.

“It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.

“Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.

“A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

Nick Kyrgios beats Mikael Ymer in straight sets to reach Washington ATP final

Nick Kyrgios is “super excited” after continuing his career-best season by powering into the final of the ATP event in Washington.

Backing up from his gruelling workload a day earlier, when he finished off Reilly Opelka then saved five match points in an epic quarter-final win over Frances Tiafoe, Kyrgios dealt with Mikael Ymer in straight sets.

Kyrgios produced another imperious serving display to beat Ymer 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 in what was the Wimbledon runner-up’s fifth semi-final appearance from his past six events.

Only an abdominal strain in Mallorca tarnished the impressive streak.

Yet to be broken every week in the American capital, Kyrgios didn’t face a solitary break point against Ymer.

He brought up set point in the opener with his 80th ace of the tournament and sealed the set with a lovely serve-volley play and backhand flick overhead winner.

The second set also provided a serving duel but the Swede was always going to come out second best against Kyrgios in this type of mood as the Australian reeled off the last three games to prevail in one hour, 34 minutes.

Kyrgios hadn’t made a final for three years but now he’s reached two in less than a month, including his breakout run to his maiden grand slam title match at Wimbledon.

That four-set defeat to Djokovic at the All England Club remains the 27-year-old’s only loss in his past 11 matches since mid-June.

“I’m just happy to be in another ending,” Kyrgios said.

Alex de Minaur wins Atlanta Open as Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis claims doubles title

Australia Day came early in Atlanta after Alex de Minaur claimed the men’s singles title before Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis swept the doubles.

Australian men’s No.1 de Minaur had his second taste of success in the Georgia capital, beating American Jenson Brooksby to continue his run of fine form.

De Minaur, who won the Atlanta Open three years ago, triumphed over Brooksby 6-3, 6-3 to lift the ATP 250 tournament trophy once more.

On the back of the victory he’s set to jump nine places in the world rankings to 21, which bodes well for the looming US Open.

When he won at Atlanta in 2019 he went on to reach the fourth round of the major, which begins at the end of August.

It’s de Minaur’s first title since June last year at Eastbourne, and his sixth ATP Tour title overall.

De Minaur had to work hard to reach the decider, rallying from a set down in the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, but the gritty Australian persevered when under pressure.

“It was great to get another title under my name — it’s my sixth and not a lot of people have been able to do that, so I feel great,” said de Minaur, who this year reached the second week of Wimbledon for the first time.

“I feel great about my game. I’ve put a lot of work in, so it’s great to see the hard work being rewarded.”

The final was a clash between two of the ATP Tour’s best defenders, but it was de Minaur’s attacking play that proved critical as he clawed past the home favorite in 91 minutes.

“I knew coming in it would be a very tactical, chess-like match that we were going to both play,” the third seed said.

“I’m happy I was able to execute my game plan and get the win but it was a very tough match.

“Plenty of times it could have gone either way and even though the scoreboard was three and three, it felt very, very tight.”

Australian Open doubles champions Kyrgios and Kokkinakis were also celebrating after winning an all-Aussie doubles final.

Despite pulling out of the singles with a knee complaint, Kyrgios teamed with his good friend to score a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over Jason Kubler and John Peers.

The second seeds, who wrapped up a three-set win in a rain-delayed semi over Americans Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock earlier in the day, clinched their second tour-level title as a team in 94 minutes.

It was 26-year-old Kokkinakis’ third career ATP doubles title — his first outside Australia — and a third career ATP doubles title for 27-year-old Kyrgios, who maintains his unbeaten record in tour-level doubles deciders.

The pair’s 2022 season record now stands at 13 wins from 15 matches.

Tennis legend Ash Barty shares loved-up photo after she marries long-time boyfriend Garry Kissick in intimate wedding in Queensland

Australian tennis legend Ash Barty has married her long-time partner Garry Kissick in a private and intimate ceremony in front of close family and friends.

The former No.1 and her golfing boyfriend shared their vowels at a secret venue in Queensland earlier this month after she returned from a trip to the British Open.

Guests who attended the beautiful day included fellow great Pat Rafter, former doubles partner and friend Casey Dellacqua, ex-player Alicia Molik and junior coach Jim Joyce.

Those who were lucky enough to be invited to the wedding were told by the notoriously private couple to avoid posting any photos to their social media.

Barty took to Instagram on Saturday night to announce the news she had tied the knot with Kissick, 31, with a loved-up photo of the newlyweds.

“Husband & Wife,” the 26-year-old captioned the sweet picture.

The down-to-earth Aussie looked stunning in a custom-made hater-neck style Suzanne Harward designed wedding gown with her hair tied back into a low bun.

Kissick appeared dapper dressed in a black tuxedo with a matching bow tie.

The lovebirds were all smiles as they gazed into one another’s eyes set to the backdrop of what appeared to be in a tropical location near the rainforest.

Tennis stars across the planet and Australian athletes flooded the comments section to share their congratulations to the new husband and wife.

“Yes, you two – congratulations,” former Australian wheelchair tennis champion Dylan Alcott wrote on the post.

“Amazing!! Wishing you lots of love and happiness,” surfing pro Mick Fanning said.

“Congratulations. Happy and love forever,” former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden added.

While former number one Australian golfer Adam Scott simply commented on a love heart emoji.

Casey Dellacqua, Rennae Stubbs, Caroline Wozniacki, Julia Goerges, Kiki Bertens, Maddison Inglis, Caroline Garcia, Lizette Cabrera and Johanna Konta were some of the past and present tennis players who shared their well wishes.

Kissick proposed to Barty in November after she capped off a spectacular year on the court where she won Wimbledon and four other WTA titles.

The three-time Grand Slam champion met her now husband in 2016 at Brisbane’s Brookwater Golf Club where he has worked.

Barty, who is a keen golfer, was visiting to play a round on the greens when the pair immediately clicked and began dating.

Their relationship did not go public until she brought Kissick to the John Newcombe Awards, where she received Australia’s highest tennis honour, and rumors began to swirl she was officially off the market.

He has toured with Barty around the globe since her career suddenly exploded and while she steadily climbed to the top of the world’s rankings.

In March, the Aussie stunned the sporting world when she announced her retirement news only two months after she won the Australian Open.

The 25-year-old posted an emotional six-minute video of a sit-down interview with close friend and former doubles partner, Casey Dellacqua, to reveal the news.

“There’s no right way or wrong way, this is perfect for me to share it with you to talk to you about it, with my team, my loved ones, that I will be retiring from tennis,” Barty emotionally said as she tried to hold back tears.

“It’s the first time I’ve said it out loud, it’s hard to say but I’m so happy and I’m so ready.”

Barty believes she does not have the “physical drive” or the “emotional want” to continue the successful career since her tennis comeback in 2016.

The eleven cricketer turned tennis champion described being “physically spent” and felt it was time to “chase other dreams” she wants to conquer.

“I just know, I am spent, physically I have nothing more to give. That for me is success, I’ve given absolutely everything I can to this beautiful sport of tennis.

“I’m really happy with that. For me that is my success.”

She has been enjoying her time off spending more time with family, including her children she speaks fondly of, and friends.

The sports lover sparked suggestions she would make a return to the world stage through golf after she participated in the Icon Series and then later attended the British Open to watch Aussie Cameron Smith triumph.

“You guys just can’t accept that I don’t want to play professional sport anymore,” Barty told 101.9 The Fox while promoting her children’s book series.

“I love golf, it’s a hobby of mine. It will not be my profession, I have no intention of making it my profession but I hack around once a week if I can — and I play off four.

“There’s no need, there’s no desire for me to play professional sport, particularly golf. I love it as a walkaround with my girlfriends and friends but yeah, not for me.”
