A suspect mistakenly released from a Los Angeles County jail where he was being held on suspicion of shooting Lady Gaga’s dog walker and stealing her French bulldogs has been recaptured.
James Howard Jackson, 19, was arrested nearly five months after being released from jail while awaiting trial “due to a clerical error,” the county Sheriff’s Department says.
Here’s what you need to know about the latest development in the saga.
Wait, what happened?
In February last year, Lady Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was shot by a man who stole two of the singer’s French bulldogs in Hollywood.
Detectives said they did not believe the thieves knew the dogs, Koji and Gustav, were Lady Gaga’s at the time.
It is believed the offender was motivated by the value of French bulldogs, which can be thousands of dollars each.
Is the dog walker OK?
Yes, but he has lost part of a lung as a result of his injuries.
In a social media post following the attack, Mr Fischer thanked Gaga for her support while he was fighting for life in hospital.
“You have shown so much support throughout this whole crisis to both me and my family,” he said.
“I look forward to the future and the moment when I get bombarded with kisses and licks (and maybe even an excitement pee?) from Asia, Koji, and Gustav.”
And the dogs?
They’re also safe and well.
Lady Gaga offered a $US500,000 reward ($643,000) — “no questions asked” — to be reunited with the dogs.
The dogs were returned two days later to an LAPD station by a woman who police initially said appeared to be “uninvolved and unassociated” with the crime.
Who was charged?
A month after the kidnapping, multiple people were charged with attempted murder and robbery in connection with the armed snatching of Lady Gaga’s dogs and the shooting of their walker.
Police arrested James Jackson, 19, Jaylin White, 19, and Lafayette Whaley, 27, in connection with the violence.
Police also arrested 50-year-old Jennifer McBride — the woman who returned Lady Gaga’s dogs who police initially said appeared to be “uninvolved” with the crime.
Ms McBride turned out to be in a relationship with the father of one of the suspects.
So someone was arrested, then mistakenly released, but has now been recaptured?
Yep.
Mr Jackson was mistakenly released from a Los Angeles jail in April this year, where he was being held on a charge of attempted murder.
Last month, US authorities offered a $US5,000 ($7,200) reward in return for information that led to his arrest.
At the time, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said the move aimed “to speed up the legal process” and Mr Jackson was arraigned under a new case number.
“Mr Jackson was subsequently released from custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. We are unsure as to why they did so,” the statement from the District Attorney’s Office read.
DETROIT – Police revealed the identities of the two people who were killed in a shooting sparked by an argument over the way cars were parked for a birthday party in a detroit neighborhood, as well as the ages of the six people who were injured.
what happened
The shooting happened at 2:44 am Sunday (July 31) in the 11600 block of Coyle Street, near Plymouth Road on Detroit’s west side, according to authorities.
Detroit police Chief James White said Winston Kirtley Jr., 36, of Detroit, got upset about the way people had parked their vehicles for a birthday party directly across the street from his house.
“This was a birthday party where people were parked all around the home, and our suspect became upset about where the vehicles were placed,” White said. “My understanding is that perhaps one of the vehicles was blocking the driveway.”

Police said the parking situation sparked a dispute that ultimately led to Kirtley firing multiple shots from what officials called a “high-powered rifle.” Gunshots were fired from both the first and second floors of the home, authorities said.
Eight people were struck by gunfire, police said.
“Instead of contacting the police department, instead of notifying the NPOs, which we have to handle such matters, he decided to take matters into his own hands, engaging them, and ultimately shooting up the home, striking our eight victims, and again, two of them are sadly deceased,” White said.
Kirtley arrested, charged
Police said officers entered Kirtley’s home, and he was inside in the dark. He has a military background and had placed weapons around the home so he could access them if engaged, White said.
Once police identified Kirtley and made contact with him, he gave himself up and was taken into custody without incident, according to authorities.

Police said they recovered 11 weapons from strategic locations throughout the home.
“Eleven weapons were strategically placed throughout the home, so as he moved through the home, he would have access to these weapons,” White said.
Kirtley was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, six counts of assault with attempted murder, two counts of discharge at a building, and 10 felony firearm violations.
He was arraigned Wednesday morning and remanded to the Wayne County Jail.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:20 am Aug. 18, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 1:45 pm Aug. 25.
Shooting victim information
Andre Willis, Jr., 38, of Detroit, was pronounced dead from gunshot injuries at the shooting scene, authorities said.
Police announced Monday that a second person had died from her injuries. She has since been identified as Toyake Thirkeild, 39, of Detroit.
“It’s incredibly sad that two families have to bury their loved ones who were killed over a minor dispute by someone who had no respect for the lives of others,” White said. “Thankfully, our officers were able to take this suspect into custody before anyone else was hurt, but this shooting should never have happened. We need every business, every faith-based organization, every school and every Detroiter to step up and work together to put an end to the violence we’re seeing.”

The six other shooting victims are a 40-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, a 35-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman, and a 19-year-old year-old man, according to officials. All six are Detroit residents.
Police said Monday that all six were recovering from their injuries. At the time, one person was in critical condition, while some others were in serious condition.

The man accused of murdering an alleged home intruder near Katherine earlier this year, will likely plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, a court has heard.
Key points:
Kim Kellett, 38, will likely plead guilty to a charge of manslaughter
Prosecutors have withdrawn the earlier murder charge
Mr Kellett is accused of shooting dead an alleged home intruder in March
Kim Kellett has been in prison sincely alleged shooting a 26-year-old man on his property at the Cutta Cutta Caves National Park in March.
The 38-year-old appeared in the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday via video link from the local correctional centre, dressed in a red prison-issued T-shirt which usually indicates the inmate is held under maximum security conditions.
Senior Crown Prosecutor, Marty Aust, told the court the original murder charge would be withdrawn and replaced with the lesser charge of manslaughter.
“The Crown will be relying on a reckless manslaughter charge,” he said.
“The facts that make out that charge have been reduced to writing and there is agreement between the parties as to the facts in full, for plea in the Supreme Court.”
A set of agreed facts was given to the judge, but not read in open court.
Mr Kellett’s lawyer, Peter Maley, told the court his client would likely plead guilty when the matter reached the Supreme Court next month.
“It will be ultimately a plea of guilty to an amended count two, for recklessly causing the death,” he said.
Despite indicating a guilty plea, the charge Mr Kellett faces is too serious to be dealt with by the Local Court.
“I am satisfied the evidence is sufficient to put the defendant on his trial in respect of count two [manslaughter],” Judge John Neill said.
“I direct he be tried at the Supreme Court in Darwin.”
Manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
Mr Kellett’s case will be mentioned in the Northern Territory Supreme Court on September 1.
Dudley, NC — The man accused of shooting three Wayne County deputies on Monday morning was found dead nine hours later.
The deputies were shot while serving an involuntary commitment order, meaning someone thought the suspect was a danger to himself and needed help. at a home in the 2500 block of Arrington Bridge Road in Dudley.
Heavily armed officers from the State Highway Patrol, WCSO and surrounding agencies surrounded the home for over nine hours.
23-year-old Jourdan Hamilton was found inside the home with an apparent fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound after SWAT members entered the residence.
It’s not known at this time who filed the commitment order.
Joel Gillie, the spokesman for Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, said all 3 injured deputies are being treated at ECU Medical Center.
Gillie said late Monday that 38-year-old Sergeant Matthew Fishman is in critical condition.
Deputy Alexander Ramon Torres, 27, and Corporal Andrew Cox, 37, were said to be in stable condition.
“Right now, our thoughts and prayers are with the individuals with our department and their families and they deal with their injuries,” said Gillie.
Matthew Fishman is the son of Dave Fishman, pastor at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Goldsboro.
The church opened its doors Monday night for those who wanted to pray for his speedy recovery.
Chachi Torres said his son, Ramon Torres, was one of the deputies shot. He said he had a “bad feeling” when he received an alert on his phone Monday morning.
“Usually, I got my phone set up for any type of news, and I had a bad feeling… my phone went off. I look at it. Boom. Wayne County Sheriff’s Office [deputies] been shot. I call everybody, and I find out one of them is my son.”
Chachi Torres said it was some of the worst news he could receive as a parent.
“I call my wife, let my wife know, my daughter. We just got in the vehicle, and we came straight to the hospital,” he said.
Ramon Torres is in good spirits, his father said.
“He’s in a little pain right now but he’s strong… He told us, he doesn’t want to see nobody, so I understand. He’s good,” said Chachi Torres.
He found out his son was shot twice, with one bullet still in place Monday night.
“One of them is in his hip. Still there,” he said. “The other went through.”
With his son stable, Ramon Torres asked for prayers for the other families impacted.
“I’m just praying for the other two. [Just] because my son is here, that doesn’t mean [I] just worry about Ramon. We worry about the other families.”
It is standard for three deputies to serve an involuntary commitment warrant, Gillie said, and deputies did not have a history with the suspect.
According to the Gun Violence Archives, there have been six incidents in NC this year where an officer was shot and injured or killed. Nationwide, the database shows there have been at least 201.
Between Jan. 1 2019 and today, North Carolina has had at least 73 incidents where an officer was shot and injured or killed. That puts our state as eighth in the nation for these types of incidents over that period of time.
During that same time period nationwide, there were more than 1180 incidents. They’ve gone up over time. From 297 in 2019, 330 in 2020 and 360 incidents reported to GVA for 2021. At this point last year, there were 190 incidents reported so we are outpacing it.

Premier Mark McGowan has defended police resourcing in regional WA saying an officer responding alone to a triple-zero call which left man shot was an “exceptional circumstance”.
Key points:
Premier Mark McGowan says “exceptional circumstances” led to officer responding alone to call that led to shooting
A police investigation into the incident in Pingelly is underway
Senior officers will meet with community leaders
The man was shot in the torso when police said he ran towards the officer who responded in Pingelly, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The man is in a stable condition in Royal Perth Hospital and an investigation into the incident is underway.
Yesterday, Deputy Commissioner Allan Adams said resourcing issues meant only one officer could respond immediately and backed the constable’s decision to attend.
Resourcing not a problem: Premier
In a press conference today, Mr McGowan defended the officer’s decision to attend the call alone.
“A police officer called in sick on the day in question … [it was an] exceptional circumstance, and so a police officer went out on their own,” he said.
“That is an unusual event … it doesn’t happen often but on this occasion, because of the illness, that was what was required.”
When questioned whether regional police stations were adequately staffed, the Premier said WA has “the best resourcing of police in history”, and that 1,100 more officers were being recruited to the WA Police Force.
“1,100 additional police officers is about a 15 to 20 per cent increase in the police numbers across the state.
“We’re obviously in a very difficult environment for recruiting across the board, but we’re getting more police through the academy… and putting more police out there into police stations and regional communities around the state.”
WA Police Union declined to comment on the matter.
Acting Superintendent for the Great Southern region Glenn Spencer also defended the actions taken by the officer.
“The officer concerned made a critical decision … he put the community’s safety first and he went out by himself, and I don’t think he can be criticized for that,” he said.
Police to meet with community leaders
Acting Superintendent Spencer said Great Southern Police would be meeting with Aboriginal elders from the community today in order to “understand what actually happened.”
“The biggest fear is that someone tries to distil this down to just being police shooting another Aboriginal man, and it’s far more complicated than that.”
Deputy Commissioner Adams said it was not “normal practice” to have one officer respond to a serious incident, but praised the constable’s response.
“Whilst it’s not desirable a single officer attend an event like this… I don’t sit here in any way saying that the police officer shouldn’t have gone,” he said.
“The officer made an assessment at that time that it was in the best interest of the community to attend straight away. He could not have foreseen what was to eventuate and I’m sure if he did, he would’ve waited a bit longer .”
ATLANTA (CBS46/Gray News) – A university in Georgia fired a professor after police said the man was arrested for the murder of a student early Saturday morning.
The Carrollton Police Department said 47-year-old Richard Sigman is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The charges come after police say 18-year-old Anna Jones showed up to a hospital with a gunshot wound on July 30 just before 12:30 am
Investigators said preliminary information indicates that the former professor and another man got into a verbal argument at a restaurant, WGCL reported.
The man reportedly told police Sigman had threatened to shoot him. When security approached Sigman, they saw he had a weapon and told him to leave.
The investigation indicates Sigman then walked into the parking lot and began shooting into a parked vehicle, hitting Jones, who was inside.
The University of West Georgia President Brendan Kelly released the following statement saying in part:
“On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends. We know this news is difficult to process and affects many members of our university community. We ask that you keep Anna’s family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy in your thoughts during this tremendously difficult time.”
According to police, friends of Jones immediately drove her to the hospital where she later died.
Jones had recently graduated from Mount Zion High School, the school’s Facebook page says, and had planned to go to the University of West Georgia.
Ethan Lepard, a friend of Jones, said she was a sweet, caring girl and that he “will miss her forever.”
“There are so many good qualities, no one could list them all,” he said. “She was always so positive, and she was an amazing friend to everyone.”
The university is offering counseling and support services to all students, faculty and staff. Resources can be found at westga.edu/wellness.
Students can also call the UWG Counseling Center 24/7 by dialing 678-839-6428 and selecting option 2.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Carrollton Police Department at 770-834-4451.
