Origin coaches Billy Slater and Brad Fittler have come under fire for suggesting Nathan Cleary be handed a lighter suspension due to his character and standing in the game.

Cleary accepted a five-week ban following his send off for an ugly lifting tackle on Eels star Dylan Brown over the weekend.

Slater, however, couldn’t fathom Cleary being rubbed out for an extended period of time.

“Do we need to be wiping our best players out of the competition for a quarter of the season for one mistake that they make?” Slater said on Channel Nine’s Billy’s Breakdown.

It was a sentiment echoed by Phil Gould.

“I don’t think we need good players out of the game for six weeks to remind them that that’s not what you do,” he said on 100% Footy.

“That’s just an error of judgement. I know this Penrith tackling technique very well, he’s probably thinking his other two players would support that player a little better than they did. They pulled away from it and he found himself in an awkward position.

“Does Nathan Cleary need six weeks away from the game to learn his lesson that’s the wrong tackle to make? He knew it six seconds after he did it that it was wrong.

“They probably want to send a message to the rest of the competition, they want it to look like the star players don’t get special treatment.”

St George forward Aaron Woods, however, was enraged by the stance.

“Freddy and Billy Slater were coming out and saying ‘he’s a good bloke and we don’t want to be missing these good players before semi-finals’,” Woods said on triple m

“That’s bull crap if you ask me.

“He had a prior charge already on Billy Walters earlier on in the year.

“He would have got four weeks, but he had that and that’s an extra week.

“Freddy came out and said that Liam Martin helped it a bit – no he didn’t. He pulled off the tackle and you see Cleary re-grip and get a hand in between the leg.

“That’s the difference between the one with Karl Lawton at the start of the year…(that tackle) was fully momentum, he got around the waist with both hands and it was just a driving tackle and luckily (Cameron) Murray twisted and landed in a really good position.

“Dylan Brown was still on the ground, you could see how hurt he was and he (Cleary) had all the intent. Just because he comes out on Instagram and says ‘I’m sorry and it was totally out of character’ – that’s what happens on a rugby league field.

“Things can go one way or the other and it obviously had no malice, but that’s just part of the game.

Woods said Cleary was far from a clean skin

“It’s a joke – remember he got in trouble for the TikTok? People forget about that as well. I got 10 in the bin the other week and was like ‘mate you shouldn’t have done that’ but everyone else was like ‘sucked in’.

“If Jared Waerea-Hargreaves does the spear tackle, we’d give him life in this game.

“It just frustrates me, just because they are the players they like – call a spade a spade.”

The NRL360 panel also took aim at those suggesting Clearly be afforded special treatment.

“I heard Billy Slater talking after the game saying how Nathan doesn’t need five weeks on the sideline to realize he’s made a mistake, but you have to put him out,” Paul Kent said on Monday night.

“You just have to do that.”

“What do you mean he doesn’t need five weeks out to learn?,” Braith Anasta questioned.

“Because Nathan’s smart enough to correct it and he knows he made a blue,” Kent replied.

“But why was he saying, why was Billy Slater saying that,” Anasta hit back.

“He wasn’t agreeing with the five week penalty, he was thinking one or two weeks could have been enough,” Kent answered.

“Because it’s Nathan Cleary?” Anasta asked.

“Because it’s Nathan Cleary yes,” Kent said.

The Panthers will now play the remainder of the regular season with Jarome Luai out with a knee injury and Cleary hit with a five match suspension.

Penrith coach confident Nathan Cleary will hit ground running after suspension

History shows why Penrith coach Ivan Cleary can be confident about son Nathan returning for the NRL finals in top gear despite being suspended until the end of the regular season.

Cleary was hit with a five-game ban for a spear tackle on Parramatta’s Dylan Brown. He will be sidelined until week one of the finals.

It means the halfback will have only played one full game — a July 23 win over Cronulla — between State of Origin III and the Panthers’ first finals appearance.

But his father said on Monday he would hit the ground running when he returned from his lengthy suspension.

“There has been enough experience for Nathan out of the last few years, probably starting in 2018,” Cleary said.

“He missed eight weeks, came back and had a couple of good games and he made his Origin debut.

“He has always come back from time out pretty much firing, so I think he will be fine.”

Halves partner Jarome Luai remains sidelined with a knee injury for a similar time frame. However, Cleary was confident the duo would pick up where they left off.

“They’ve played together for six years, so that’s a help, and they’ll be training together once Romie (Luai) is up and about.

“I feel like that training should get us in a good enough position for those guys to click back together.”

Despite the lengthy ban, the halfback will join the rest of the squad on a mid-season camp to Kiama on the NSW South Coast before Saturday’s trip to Canberra.

Cleary said the Panthers had considered fighting the severity of his son’s grade-three charge but chose not to, given what was at stake.

If the NRL judiciary had upheld the grading, Cleary would have missed the first week of the finals campaign as well as the Panthers’ remaining five regular-season games.

“I definitely thought we had a case there but in the end the risk was too high for him to lose another week,” said Cleary, whose side finished the season with games against Canberra, Melbourne, South Sydney, the Warriors and North Queensland.

The challenge for the Panthers is now to wrap up a minor premiership with a relatively inexperienced halves pairing.

Sean O’Sullivan will be partnered with either utility Jaeman Salmon or two-game rookie Kurt Falls, although Cleary would not be drawn on who would get the nod to play the Raiders.

Cleary was unable to confirm if center Stephen Crichton would be back after suffering a laceration to his ear in the win over the Sharks.

The Tigers will be without Jackson Hastings for the rest of the season after he suffered an ugly leg break against the Broncos.

Hastings had his leg caught under him in an ugly tackle that saw Broncos forward Patrick Carrigan placed on report for a hip drop tackle.

Scans confirmed a broken leg for Hastings who will undergo surgery that rules him out for an extended period.

Meanwhile, the Eels have copped a massive blow in their hunt for the top four with star halfback Mitchell Moses reportedly suffering a broken finger.

Brent Read told Triple M that Moses will be ruled out for at least a month after suffering in the injury in last night’s win over the Panthers. Moses appeared to injure his finger at him in the 31st minute, and had it strapped by a physio shortly afterwards, but managed to finish the match.

Moses will reportedly undergo surgery and could miss the remainder of the regular season.

COWBOYS LOSE FLYER TO HAMSTRING INJURY

The Cowboys will be sweating on a hamstring injury to winger Kyle Feldt after he limped off in their 34-8 win over the Dragons.

STORM FULLBACK CRISIS WORSENS

Meanwhile, the Storm’s outside back injury crisis has worsened with replacement fullback Nick Meaney going off against the Warriors with a shoulder injury.

Meaney fell on the point of his shoulder from a great height after he was taken out in the air by Warriors winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

“He fell awkwardly and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has quite a significant AC joint injury the way that shoulder came down right on the point,” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

“Melbourne in all sorts of problems here. They were chasing Reece Walsh to be a fullback.

“Tyran Wishart will come on and play fullback now after they already lost Ryan Papenhuyzen for the season.”

Coach Craig Bellamy was hopeful after the game that it wasn’t a serious injury and revealed there are some positive signs.

“He’s done something to his right shoulder but I don’t think we’re quite sure of what he’s done,” he said.

“It looked pretty dire when he came off, he obviously had the sling on. But it’s looking a bit better at the moment, they don’t think it’s quite as bad as what they thought it was at the start.”

In the same game, Warriors five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita succumbed to a leg injury in the first half and left the field.

“We’re thinking it’s an MCL… he’ll have scans to see the extent of the injury. But our medical officer said it’s an MCL injury,” interim coach Stacey Jones said after the game.

ROOSTERS STAR SUFFERS UGLY CONCUSSION

Roosters prop Lindsay Collins has suffered a nasty head knock, colliding with the head of Morgan Boyle.

Collins bounced out of the tackle, knocking himself unconscious before leaving the field with the assistance of the club doctor and trainer.

The 26-year-old was one of three players who left the field in the first four minutes of the Origin decider and was playing his first game since the blow, spending two weeks sidelined due to ongoing concussion symptoms.

“I fear for Lindsay here, he went straight down… he has copped both head and shoulder, that is incredibly heavy on Lindsay Collins,” Andrew Voss said.

“You could see the contact,” Greg Alexander said.

“That is worrying for a player that is only returning this round because of concussion.”

Fox League’s James Hooper confirmed Collins would not return to the field in Round 20.

“Category 1 concussion, his night is over,” Fox League’s James Hooper said.

PANTHERS’ INJURY UPDATE

The Panthers have copped a significant blow with star five-eighth Jarome Luai expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.

The club confirmed the timeline on Thursday and revealed that Luai had suffered a high grade MCL injury.

Penrith also revealed that Mitch Kenny (knee) and Stephen Crichton (ear/concussion) could return next week.

TIGERS’ BIG BLOW

Luke Brooks will miss Round 20 and likely the rest of the season after suffering a calf injury at training.

The Wests Tigers confirmed on Thursday that Brooks will be out for five to six weeks with Jock Madden the man expected to replace him in the halves.

The Tigers also revealed Luke Garner is a good chance of returning from a neck injury in Round 21, Stefano Utoikamanu has commended a running program after undergoing wrist surgery and Tommy Talau will return to full team training over the next month.
