NRL 2022: Lara Pitt reveals ‘hardest part’ of her job, Round 22 preview, premiership dark horse, Sharks, Dragons

The race for the NRL finals is heating up and this weekend will see several tantalizing match-ups that are certain to shape the make-up of the top eight.

The Panthers face the Storm tonight, before Parramatta take on South Sydney on Friday night and the Roosters play the Cowboys on Saturday afternoon.

“I think the top four battle is heating up for sure,” Fox League’s Lara Pitt told news.com.au ahead of round 22.

Stream every game of every round of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership Season Live & Ad-Break Free During Play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

“I think the Storm have probably got a tough one to win against the Panthers even though Penrith don’t have (Nathan) Cleary and (Jarome) Luai — they’re always extremely tough to beat at home.

“The Eels-Rabbitohs game is one of the hardest of the round, equally Roosters-Cowboys. Those two games are massive. I found those the hardest to pick but I’ve gone with the Roosters and Parramatta.

“The Parramatta Eels, that’s a huge game against the Rabbitohs, if they win that they’re into the top four.

The Panthers sit three games clear on top of the ladder and are red-hot favorites to win back-to-back premierships, but Pitt believes Cronulla are a “dark horse” heading into finals.

“I’ve been at the last couple of Sharks games on the sideline and been really impressed with how gritty and the style of football they’re playing,” she said.

“They can get into an arm wrestle. They still haven’t hit peak form, there’s still improvement to come for them.

“They’re winning ugly, they’re winning tough, then when they play well they can score points. I’d say the Sharks are possibly the dark horse.

“I think the eight is pretty much settled when I look at the standings at the teams that have kind of fallen over at the wrong end of the season — Manly, Raiders and Dragons unfortunately have left it a bit too late.

“I think the eight is probably the way it is now but everyone will be jostling for where they actually finish in the eight. I back the Roosters and the Broncos to secure their place in finals, it’s just about how high they can finish.”

Gruesome injuries ‘hardest part’ of the job

In her role as Fox League’s sideline reporter, Pitt has witnessed several nasty injuries this season including Stephen Crichton’s mauled ear, Ryan Papenhuyzen suffering a fractured knee cap and Aaron Booth rupturing his ACL last weekend.

Pitt said having to interview players after they’ve suffered season-ending injuries is the “hardest part” of her job.

“The Stephen Crichton one stands out the most,” she said.

“I think even he probably was in shock himself and didn’t realize his ear was hanging off walking around the stadium saying g’day to the fans at the end of the game, then had to head off to hospital and have a plastic surgeon sew his ear together.

“There’s been that one and obviously seeing Aaron Booth go down for the Titans last week, he has sustained the most serious knee injury you can get.

“I spoke to him after the game. He knows he’s got a long road to recovery but I was pretty surprised at how strong he was and how he looked like he was going to take it head on, which is pretty incredible when he’s just sustained a horrific knee injury.

“It’s probably not the best part of the job at all and speaking to players just after they’ve ruined their year or they’ve got that long comeback trail ahead of them, that’s probably the hardest part.

“I don’t like watching the replays of horrendous injuries, that’s for sure. I’ll certainly look away. I’m not too frightened by the blood and the gore of it, but I’m not watching the replays of knees going the wrong way, that’s for sure.”

Dragons need star power around Hunt

St George Illawarra take on the Raiders in a Fox League exclusive game on Sunday and while both sides appear out of the finals race, they will be desperate for a win.

Pitt believes the Dragons need to recruit some star players in the spine to support Ben Hunt, if they are any chance to make finals in 2023.

“The club has made some moves to change the support staff around Anthony Griffin. Clearly they can see it’s not working,” she said.

“The concern is now that they’re not bringing on board any high caliber players into the roster to help Ben Hunt and he desperately needs the help. It’s hard to see how they’ll be any better next year with just some assistant coaching movements.

“If that’s the case, then the pressure will be firmly on the club and the coach early next year if they don’t make any movement in performance on the field.

“Overall, just hugely disappointing that they haven’t improved this year and they’ve failed to make finals.”

Watch the St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders at 1pm on Sunday only on Fox League.

Tennis 2022: Nick Kyrgios’ ’emotional growth spurt’ puts world on notice, legend makes huge US Open call, Canadian Open Montreal

Nick Kyrgios says he has become more “resilient” and is still maturing while he is playing the best tennis of his career.

He continued his hot streak on Wednesday (AEST), defeating Sebastian Baez 6-4 6-4 in their first round match at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

Kyrgios had his serve broken for the first time since his loss in the Wimbledon final, but recovered to claim a straight sets win.

The Australian is in superb form after he won both the singles and doubles titles at the Citi Open in Washington DC last week.

But Kyrgios is unseeded in Montreal and will next face World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, who he joked was far from the ideal opponent.

“I know I’ve got Medvedev next, which kind of sucks because against pretty much any player in the world right now I feel extremely confident,” Kyrgios told the Tennis Channel.

“Obviously I feel confident going up against him but we all know what he can produce. I’m a bit tired but I’m going to try and give him a good run.”

Kyrgios said having to play two matches in one day in Washington made him realize “that I can be really resilient at times”.

“In the past, I probably would have definitely pulled out of doubles,” he admitted.

“After the (Frances) Tiafoe match, I played Reilly (Opelka) and then Frances in the same day and came out the next day and played during the day basically.”

Kyrgios confessed he hadn’t always given 100 per cent effort on the court in the past but in a scary prospect to his rivals, he said he has turned a corner.

“I know at times I haven’t always been the best example going out on court, kind of not giving my best effort and all that,” he said.

“But I feel like when I have a week like DC, it kind of erases those things and shows how much I’ve grown. It was just a hell of a week, probably my favorite week of my career so far having my girlfriend and my team with me. And winning the doubles title was pretty special as well.

“I’m learning a lot about myself still to this day I’m maturing and hopefully I can keep having these good results.”

Kyrgios is now ranked World No. 37 and if he gets past Medvedev, a deep run at Montreal would ensure he secures a crucial seed at the US Open, which begins later this month.

Former US Open champion Andy Roddick believes Kyrgios is in such a purple patch he is one of the top three contenders to take out the last grand slam of the year.

“It’s a big, big deal to me that he goes into Washington, which is a pretty big event in the lead-up to the US Open,” Roddick said on The Rich Eisen Show.

“Brutal conditions… To go through singles and doubles and not to tap out mentally or physically is a big, big sign.

“I think it puts him into the top two, maybe three, favorites for the US Open.”

Daniel Ricciardo seeking $21 million payout for McLaren sacking, Oscar Piastri, Alpine, 2023 grid, latest, updates

Daniel Ricciardo is reportedly seeking a whopping eight-figure payout to walk away from his contract with McLaren.

The 33-year-old veteran has become embroiled in F1’s mid-year silly season following reports he is being replaced by fellow Australian Oscar Piastri at McLaren in 2023.

Watch Every Practice, Qualifying & Race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™ Live on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The news erupted last week after Fernando Alonso blindsided the F1 world when he jumped into Sebastian Vettel’s vacated seat at Aston Martin for 2023.

Alpine then announced Piastri would be the man to replace Alonso, only for the Melburnian to reject the seat — a bold move for a man who is yet to drive in F1.

Now Ricciardo has asked for a $21 million payout from McLaren for the early termination of his contract, according to Speedcafe.com.

Ricciardo is said to be the only party who can break his contract with the team, which expires at the end of 2023.

The report also states that should Ricciardo secure a drive at another team next season, any salary he receives would see the same value refunded to McLaren.

A payout would clear the way for McLaren to sign Piastri and for Ricciardo to continue his F1 career elsewhere on the grid.

Alpine reportedly did not have a valid long-term F1 contract with its reserve driver Piastri, which has allowed McLaren’s deal with the 21-year-old to be ticked off by the Contract Recognition Board.

Hamilton’s surprise retirement admission spells bad news for Ricciardo amid long game twist

Ricciardo posts for the first time since shock McLaren dumping

Four contenders loom for Ricciardo’s signature. A ‘long game’ twist could sway his call

Ricciardo has remained tight-lipped and doesn’t appear bothered by the ongoing saga.

He is clearly enjoying his mid-season break and this week posted a photo of himself smiling in a swimming pool.

If Piastri does indeed take his place at McLaren, Ricciardo’s most likely landing spot would be Alpine, the French team formerly known as Renault where he spent two seasons in 2019 and 2020.

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer slammed Piastri in a blistering spray over the weekend.

“I expected more loyalty from Oscar than he is showing,” the Alpine team principal told Spanish publication The confidential.

“I started in 1989 in Formula 1 and I’ve never seen anything like this. And it’s not about Formula 1, it’s about integrity as a human being.

“It could happen in ice hockey or soccer, it doesn’t matter. But you don’t do that. He signed a piece of paper, a document, saying he would do something different.

“For me, the way I grew up, I don’t need to sign a piece of paper and then have someone say, ‘You’re lying, because you signed this.’ For me, if you say, ‘Hey, help me, I’ll help you tomorrow,’ there’s no way I would go back on my word. No way.”

“He should (drive with the) team that has taken care of him, that has taken him to the world championship and, above all, that during the last year has put him in a Formula 1 car so that he would be ready, so that he would know the circuits,” Szafnauer added.

“You did everything I asked you to do (from Alpine to Piastri) and now I promise you that if you do this, I will do this. I don’t need a piece of paper where it says, ‘With a clause, I can get out of here’.

“There should be some loyalty to the fact that we have invested literally millions and millions of euros to prepare him. So I don’t understand it either, you should ask him.”

Despite appearing to botch his contract, Szafnauer said Alpine will play hardball in a bid to hold on to Piastri.

“We have a contract with Piastri, which he signed in November, we have spoken to our lawyers and they have told us that this is a binding contract, so part of that contract allows us to put Oscar in one of our cars in 2023, which is the reason we issued the press release,” he said.

F1 2022: Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer shreds Oscar Piastri for lack of loyalty in brutal spray, Daniel Ricciardo

Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer has blasted Aussie Oscar Piastri following his shock defection from the team.

Piastri sent the F1 world into a spin last week when he rejected Alpine’s seat vacated by Fernando Alonso, amid shock reports he is replacing Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren.

Watch Every Practice, Qualifying & Race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™ Live on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

It was a bold move for a man who is yet to drive in F1 and clearly didn’t sit well with Szafnauer, who slammed Piastri for bailing out on the team that had invested so much in him.

No way.”

Piastri had been part of Alpine’s development program for several years and won three consecutive titles across a stellar junior career, culminating in last year’s Formula 2 triumph.

He has driven Alpine’s F1 car on numerous occasions on different circuits this year as part of the team’s testing program.

As Alpine’s reserve driver, filling the seat left by Alonso seemed like the logical move, but Piastri’s snub doesn’t sit well with Szafnauer.

“He should (drive with the) team that has taken care of him, that has taken him to the world championship and, above all, that during the last year has put him in a Formula 1 car so that he would be ready, so that he would know the circuits,” he said.

Despite reports F1’s Contract Recognition Board has already validated Piastri’s agreement with McLaren, Szafnauer said Alpine will play hardball in a bid to hold on to the 21-year-old.

“We have a contract with Piastri, which he signed in November, we have spoken to our lawyers and they have told us that this is a binding contract, so part of that contract allows us to put Oscar in one of our cars in 2023, which is the reason we issued the press release,” he said.

“There is also an option for 2024 and the possibility for us to ‘loan’ the driver to another team. We wanted Fernando with us for one more year and then a ‘loan’ of Oscar for 2023.

“I have always said in all my press conferences that Piastri would be in Formula 1 in 2023 and it is because I knew he could be in our car or in another car, on loan, if Fernando had stayed.

“But Alonso, for whatever reason – and I think I know the reasons, although you should ask him – he goes to Aston Martin. So, we started to finalize the agreement with Piastri, and instead of giving him away, we decided to put him in our car. Hence, the statement.”

As for Ricciardo, Alpine is open to the 33-year-old returning to the team, formerly known as Renault, where he spent too many seasons in 2019 and 2020.

And if that doesn’t eventuate, there are a few other teams where he could end up, while a mega $21 million payout beckons if McLaren does indeed cut Ricciardo loose.

Daniel Ricciardo’s lifeline at Alpine not quite what it seems, Oscar Piastri, McLaren

The Daniel Ricciardo-Oscar Piastri saga is only getting more complicated by the day.

The F1 world erupted when it was revealed McLaren had told Ricciardo it plans to replace him with the young Australian driver next season despite Ricciardo being contracted for 2023.

Watch Every Practice, Qualifying & Race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™ Live on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The decision sent fans into a spin, with many slamming McLaren for its treatment of Ricciardo.

The development means Ricciardo’s F1 career is in limbo, and his future could take a long time to settle because McLaren will likely face a challenge from Alpine over its poaching of Piastri.

Alpine’s handling of the saga has come under the microscope and Guanyu Zhou, Alfa Romeo’s rookie driver, says he’s “happy” to be free from the shackles of the team where he was part of the junior academy alongside Piastri.

“I’ve been completely released,” Zhou said when asked about how his career is going away from the French team.

Zhou, who effectively leapfrogged Piastri in the pecking order to snag the lone spare seat on this year’s grid, is glad he hasn’t found himself “stuck” at Alpine like Piastri.

“Everything worked out very nicely, because my contract was ending at the end of last year and it was up to both of us if we wanted to continue, but then there was an opportunity with Alfa,” he said.

“So the deal was definitely not to continue with Alpine, because I didn’t see anywhere I could have a seat for next year or for this year. And Alfa and Alpine are quite big competitor brands – not just in Formula 1 but in general.

“It was not easy to get out of Alpine but I’m very happy that everything worked out well because if I had another year I’d be kind of stuck, the same now with Oscar.

“So it’s not the best thing for me. I feel like there was an opportunity here so I went for it, and I think it was a very good decision.”

Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer has said he is open to Ricciardo to return to the team, formerly known as Renault, where he spent two underwhelming seasons in 2019 and 2020.

But such a return could be more complicated than it seems. RacingNews365 reported earlier this year AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has a clause in his contract that would allow him to join a rival team.

The clause comes with one condition — that said team is placed higher than AlphaTauri in the standings.

Alpine is currently higher than AlphaTauri in the constructors’ championship, meaning Gasly, who is French, could choose to join Alpine.

Could Ricciardo find himself off the grid altogether? (Photo by Dan Mullan/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

Piastri’s agreement with McLaren has reportedly been validated by F1’s Contract Recognition Board, and Alpine’s botched handling of his contract is unlikely to fill Ricciardo with confidence.

There is still plenty to play out in F1’s silly season but Ricciardo’s future is becoming increasingly unclear.

The 33-year-old could return to Alpine to replace Fernando Alonso, or move to Alfa Romeo alongside Valtteri Bottas.

Ricciardo has made it clear he wants to stay in F1 so it’s unlikely he’ll be interested in a move to McLaren’s IndyCar team.

There remains the possibility Ricciardo could find himself out of the sport altogether and forced into an early retirement, which would be a shocking turn of events for one of the most marketable drivers in F1.

Regardless of where he ends up, Ricciardo can expect a whopping payout from McLaren if he is indeed given the flick with a year remaining on his deal.

UFC 2022: Champ’s brother Mohammed Usman stuns with brutal KO to win The Ultimate Fighter

The UFC heavyweight division could have another superstar on its hands if a brutal knockout finish on Sunday (AEST) is anything to go by.

Mohammed Usman, the younger brother of UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, defeated Zac Pauga via TKO to win the season 30 finale of The Ultimate Fighter.

Usman had a lackluster opening round but only needed 36 seconds to end the bout in the second round.

He landed a heavy but deft left hook on Pauga, who immediately fell to the canvas, where he lay motionless.

The referee stopped the fight and launched himself over Pauga to ensure Usman didn’t do any more damage.

Usman flexed and slapped his chest as he claimed victory in The Ultimate Fighter — the reality MMA series run by UFC boss Dana White.

Kamaru and Mohammed became the first brothers to both win the competition.

Mohammed’s performance blew fans away and had many predicting big things for him if and when he makes his UFC debut.

CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjouri tweeted: “WOAH! Mohammad Usman erases a terrible first round and evaporates Zac Pauga from this universe.”

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf joked: “Imagine being a kid on the playground and you decide to mess with one of the Usman kids.

“And then they’re like, OK. Let me go and get my brothers. And those dudes show up. Ain’t gonna be fun.”

Kamaru, who is No. 1 in the UFC’s pound for pound rankings, defended his welterweight belt against Colby Covington last year and is set to return to the octagon against Leon Edwards at UFC 278 later this month.

Wests Tigers, video of Leichhardt Oval grandstand collapsing amid NSW stadium funding standoff

Calls for several local stadiums in Sydney to be upgraded will only grow louder after shocking footage emerged of a grandstand collapsing at Leichhardt Oval.

Radio host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald was attending a high school rugby union match between St Joseph’s College and Riverview on Saturday and he shared a video of an ugly incident on Twitter.

In the clip, a Joeys player goes over for a try to the delight of the packed crowd in attendance.

But the video then shows a railing at the front of a small grandstand collapse under the weight of the fans, causing a number of them to faceplant onto concrete meters below.

Fitzgerald wrote: “Do you reckon Leichardt Oval needs an upgrade?”

It’s unclear if any of the spectators were injured. Channel 9 reports paramedics are at the scene.

The collapse happened in front of a crowd of around 15,000 and brought the game to a standstill.

The unfortunate incident will only heap more pressure on the NSW government to commit to funding upgrades to three Sydney stadiums including Leichhardt Oval, the traditional home of the Wests Tigers.

This week it emerged Sydney is on the brink of losing the NRL Grand Final after the state government reportedly walked away from an $800 million pledge.

The agreed upon deal, reportedly struck in May, is on the brink of collapsing and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys is said to be fuming.

The agreement would see Brookvale Oval ($100m), Leichhardt Oval ($50m) and Cronulla’s Shark Park ($100m) receive significant upgrades — and if delivered, the Grand Final would remain in Sydney for the next 20 years until 2042 on the proviso the Olympic venue would receive an $800m upgrade.

Those plans were scrapped during the pandemic with the NRL moving to shift those funds to suburban grounds and V’landys claiming he had received verbal confirmations from NSW Premiers Gladys Berejiklian and Dominic Perrottet for between $250 and $350 million.

Penrith Stadium was also in the agreement, however $300m has reportedly been ticked off to upgrade the grounds.

“We are in delicate negotiations with the NSW government,” V’landys said.

“All options will be on the table if these negotiations fail.”

A deadline on Tuesday passed with the two parties still staring each other down with reports Perrottet is set to walk away from a $250 million pledge to upgrade grounds, according to The Daily Telegraph.

2GB host Ben Fordham grilled NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres, who has since resigned from his ministerial posts for separate reasons, over why Penrith Stadium had received funding but the other grounds had not.

“You’re the Sports Minister, your home ground is Penrith, you’re a Panthers fan and for all I know you’re probably the number one ticket holder,” Fordham said.

“So they got the $300 million, so what about Brookvale, Shark Park, Leichhardt Oval… I would be seriously surprised if you don’t know the answer I am posing to you.

“Why did your home ground get the money at your home ground and the others didn’t?

“Ben, there’s a long-term strategy,” Ayres said.

“We made decisions in what was the best interests of the public.

“We’ve had a long-term stadia strategy that we’ve been delivering since 2015. We’ve rebuilt Parramatta Stadium, we’re just about to open the new Sydney Football stadium.

“We’re committed to a stadium in Penrith, it reflects our three city strategy.

“We’ve invested well in excess of $1.5b dollars, part of that is, we’d like to have a long-term commitment from the NRL for the grand finale.

“We’ve just had Covid, we’ve had substantial flood impacts that have put more pressure on the budget.”

The Queensland government is now readying a bid to claim to NRL grand final for years to come.

There was nothing in it in the first set, but Kyrgios didn’t do himself any favors with a double fault in the tie-break to give Tiafoe the upper hand.

The match went up a gear in the second set, culminating in an epic tie-break that Kyrgios won 14-12, as he somehow managed to save five match points.

Kyrgios and Tiafoe fired off several aces and countless lengthy rallies in an exchange that left tennis fans in awe.

The Washington Post’s Ella Brockway tweeted: “This Kyrgios-Tiafoe match is absolutely bonkers.

“There are few things in sports quite like The Nick Kyrgios Experience.”

Both players complained to the chair umpire on multiple occasions, unhappy with spectators in the crowd yelling out during points and as they were preparing to serve.

“I want to go to bed,” Kyrgios said midway through the third set.

He fired off a whopping 35 aces and 60 winners in total as he ran away with the third set, wrapping up the match at 1am local time in Washington DC

He will next face Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in the semi-finals as his quest for a second title in Washington continues.

On the women’s side of the draw, Australia’s Daria Saville continued her strong form with a 6-1 7-5 win over Rebecca Marino to book her place in a semi-final against sixth seed Kaia Kanepi.

Top seed Andrey Rublev won twice on Saturday (AEST) to reach the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA Washington Open, dispatching Americans Maxime Cressy and JJ Wolf at the US Open tuneup.

Rain forced double duty upon Rublev and several others but storms provided everyone a timely rest break between matches.

He will take on Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the other semi-final.
