Woman found dead in Bluewater bushland was in relationship with man arrested over her death, Queensland police say

Detectives say a man arrested over the death of a woman in north Queensland had been in a relationship with the victim for several months.

Mother of four Tania Trickey, 44, was killed at Bluewater, near Townsville, some time on Saturday morning.

A group of teenagers riding quad bikes discovered the body on a sandy track in bushland that afternoon.

Police arrested a 38-year-old Deeragun man at a service station in Proserpine around 8:30pm on Sunday after his car was spotted by patrolling officers.

“Police were basically able to take him by surprise,” Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said.

Police have seized the man’s vehicle, which will be subject to forensic examination.

“We hope to obviously find evidence that will link our person of interest and the vehicle to the crime scene [at Bluewater],” Detective Inspector Shepherd said.

Police said the man and Ms Trickey had been in a relationship for a few months.

The pair allegedly drove to the remote area at Bluewater together on Saturday where the woman was later found dead.

Detective Inspector Shepherd said they were able to identify the man after his vehicle was captured on dash-cam footage near the scene.

Aboriginal man dies in custody at Port Phillip Prison in Melbourne, hours after hospital visit

An Aboriginal man has died in a Melbourne prison just hours after returning from hospital.

The ABC understands the 32-year-old man was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesday morning for treatment.

He was then brought back to the maximum-security Port Phillip prison, where he died in the medical unit on Wednesday night.

A spokesperson from the Department of Justice and Community confirmed the man died on Wednesday.

“It is with great sorrow that Corrections Victoria acknowledges the passing of a prisoner at Port Phillip Prison,” the spokesperson said.

“As with all deaths in custody, the matter has been referred to the coroner, who will formally determine the cause of death.”

Premier Daniel Andrews said both the coroner and Corrections Victoria would conduct a full review into death.

A statement was posted to the Corrections Victoria website late on Friday afternoon, saying: “We recognize that all deaths in custody have impacts on family members, friends, victims and the broader Aboriginal community, and we’re working to ensure they are provided with the support they need.”

Victoria’s corrections system was heavily criticized during a recent inquest into the death of Aboriginal woman Veronica Nelson, who died alone in her cell despite repeatedly calling out for help.

A St Vincent’s spokesperson offered the hospital’s condolences and said it would comply with the coronial inquest.

Push for uniform services across Australia

Federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus told ABC Radio Melbourne he wanted all states to adopt uniform custody notification services.

He said national implementation of the support services would enable Aboriginal people in custody to speak to lawyers, family members and support services.

“We’ve made a commitment in the election to assist families with coronial inquiries with the hope that if these deaths in custody are examined, we will learn more about how they can be prevented,” he said.

In 1991, Australia’s Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody warned the arrest of Aboriginal people should be a last resort and that prison staff should be trained to recognize the signs of deteriorating health.

There have been more than 500 deaths in custody since the commission.

Co-chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria Marcus Stewart said the figure showed that changes were long overdue.

“[It’s] 500 too many. I have no confidence that the system is working,” he said.

“I think the system is rotted and corroded to its core and we need systematic reform, structural reform.”

He said mechanisms such as the Yoorrook Justice Commission, a truth-telling process, needed to be put in place so treaty could deliver reforms.

Mr Stewart said he was in favor of Mr Dreyfus’ suggestions of national custody notification services.

“It’s a bottom line responsibility that the government should be doing as a normal practice, and it’s kind of disgraceful … that in 2022 we’re talking about that being introduced,” he said.

“We see you, we hear you and we notice the inaction you’re taking on Aboriginal deaths in custody.

“Step up and take responsibility.”

St. Croix County stabbing suspect to appear in court Monday

HUDSON, Wis. (WEAU) – The suspect in a deadly stabbing spree in St. Croix County Saturday is set to appear in court on Monday.

52-year-old Nicolae Miu of Prior Lake, Minn. is being held at the St. Croix County Jail awaiting formal charges for allegedly stabbing five people on the Apple River Saturday, killing one person.

In a release, the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office said they were told that multiple people had been stabbed on the river while tubing upstream from the Highway 35/Highway 64 bridge in the Town of Somerset at 3:47 pm on Saturday, July 30 Deputies found five people with stab wounds to their abdomen and began providing medical care to the victims. Two of the victims were flown and two others were taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. The fifth victim, a 17-year-old boy identified by his family as Isaac Schuman of Stillwater, Minn., was taken to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater where we were pronounced dead.

Four other victims, a 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, Minn., a 22-year-old man from Elk River, Minn., and a 20-year-old man and 22-year-old man from Luck, Wis. ., suffered serious or critical torso or chest injuries, according to the release.

The family of Isaac Schuman, who was killed in the stabbings, released a statement Sunday, said the 17-year-old soon-to-be high school senior was preparing to apply to several universities to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. Schuman had started a car and boat detailing business in the past year, and his family called him “mature for his age and had a forward-looking mentality that was uncommon for a high school junior.” Family members said he “entered every room with a big smile, infectiously positive aura and lifted everyone around him up,” and that he had a bright future ahead of him.

Miu, the suspect in the stabbings, was found at the exit point for tubers on the river at Village Park in Somerset, Wis. after witnesses told law enforcement about his location of him. Miu was taken into custody without incident.

Miu is scheduled to appear in St. Croix County Circuit Court at 1 pm on Monday. He is being recommended for one charge of 1st-degree intentional homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon, four counts of mayhem and four counts of aggravated battery with the use of a dangerous weapon with the intention to cause great bodily harm. A conviction of 1st-degree intentional homicide in Wisconsin carries a mandatory life sentence in prison.
