Game of Thrones star Sean Bean says intimacy coordinators ‘spoil the spontaneity’ of sex scenes

Actor Sean Bean has hit out at the presence of intimacy coordinators on movie and TV productions.

the game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings star, 63, said in a profile interview with The Times UK intimacy coordinators “spoil the spontaneity” of sex scenes.

“It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things. Somebody saying, ‘Do this, put your hands there, while you touch his thing… I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise,” Bean said.

But acting is generally considered a technical exercise in which an actor is directed by somebody who tells them what to say and do.

Intimacy coordinators are increasingly common on sets to ensure that actors are comfortable with the physical movements required in a sex scene. The inclusion of intimacy coordinators has been supercharged in the wake of the MeToo movement.

Intimacy coordinator Ita O’Brien explained to news.com.au in 2020 what her job entailed. She said: “We have an understanding of physicality, body movements and anatomy, and of an actor’s process and how they can serve the script.

“We want to know what’s not suitable for you as a person, and we can work creatively with an actor with your agreement and consent and help the production. When we work from a clear ‘yes’ from the actors, it’ll be a way better sex scene.

“Then once you get in front of the camera, your actors can be free because they know they can trust where they’re going to be touched and where they’re touching their fellow actor.”

Bean made the comments in the context of Lady Chatterleya 1993 TV movie with him and Joely Richardson.

He said of his experience: “Lady Chatterley was spontaneous. It was joy. We had a good chemistry between us and we knew what we were doing was unusual because she was married, I was married.

“But we were following the story. We were trying to portray the truth of what DH Lawrence wrote.”

Bean also told The Times UK of a scene from his current series Snowpiercer which featured him and another actor – later revealed to be co-star Lena Hall – in the nude and involving a mango.

“I think they cut a bit out actually,” he said. “Often the best work you do – where you’re trying to push the boundaries and the very nature of it is experimental – gets censored when TV companies or advertisers say it’s too much. It’s a nice scene, quite surreal, dream-like and abstract. And mango-esque.”

when The Times UK reporter pointed out to Bean that intimacy coordinators are often there to protect actors, Bean responded by saying it depended on the actor and that Hall “had a musical cabaret background so she was up for anything”.

Hall later responded on Twitter by saying that she felt completely comfortable with Bean in that scene but she still saw the value of intimacy coordinators.

She wrote: “If I feel comfortable with my scene partner and with others in the room then I won’t need an intimacy coordinator. But if there is any part of me that is feeling weird, gross, over-exposed etc, I will either challenge the necessity of the scene or I’ll want an (intimacy coordinator).

“I do feel intimacy coordinators are a welcome addition to the set and think they could also help with the trauma experienced in other scenes. Sometimes you need them and sometimes you don’t but every single person and scene and experience is different.”

Stream the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon on BINGE or FOXTEL from August 22. New BINGE customers get a 14-day free trial.

Hall also clarified that her professional background is in theater and not cabaret, although she occasionally performs cabaret, but that “does not mean that I am up for anything”.

Other actors have also come out in defense of intimacy coordinators, including West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler.

She wrote on Twitter: “Intimacy coordinators establish an environment of safety for actors. I was extremely grateful for the one we had on (West Side Story) – they showed grace to a newcomer like myself + educated those around me who’ve had years of experience. Spontaneity in intimate scenes can be unsafe. Wake up.”

An infamous incident of an unsafe set environment is the experience of actor Maria Schneider, who as a 19-year-old filmed a rape scene in Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1972 film Last Tango in Paris.

She said the scene, which involved penetration with a stick of butter, wasn’t in the original shooting script and she was only told of it in the moments before filming. Bertolucci has said that he had n’t told her about the scene because he wanted her performance by her to be real and rageful.

Later recalling the order, Schneider said: “I was so angry. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, by both Marlon (Brando) and by Bertolucci.”

Elon Musk reignites bitter feud with US politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Elon Musk has said US politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has “great taste in lipstick” in an apparent reignition of his feud with the New York Congresswoman.

The Tesla CEO made the remark on a podcast called full-sendin which several co-hosts made comments about the 32-year-old politician’s appearance.

Two of the co-hosts called AOC “attractive,” then another said the New York Democrat was “all right,” the new york post reports.

Musk then chimed in, saying, “Yeah, great choice of lipstick I think. Great taste in lipstick, I mean, that’s my observation. That’s a genuine compliment.”

Musk then added, “Tell me I’m wrong,” before sipping an alcoholic seltzer and laughing alongside the podcast hosts.

AOC’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk’s remarks.

The world’s richest man has a history of sparring with Ms Ocasio-Cortez.

In April, the politician tweeted: “Tired of having to collectively stress about what explosion of hate crimes is happening bc some billionaire with an ego problem unilaterally controls a massive communication platform.”

Musk responded: “Stop hitting on me, I’m really shy.”

Ms Ocasio-Cortez then said that she’d been referring to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg – not Musk – then deleted the tweet.

She later posted a screenshot of her back-and-forth with Musk with a shrugging emoji and the caption: “Like I said, ego problems.”

Then in May, she said she was looking to ditch her Tesla Model 3, which she bought in 2020 for commutes between her New York City district and Washington DC She said she was looking to buy a car from a company that uses union labor.

“At the time, it was the only EV [electric vehicle] that could get me from New York to Washington on like one, or one-and-a-half charges,” she said of her Tesla. “I would love to switch.”

Musk, meanwhile, posted a Twitter poll asking his followers whether they have more trust in billionaires or politicians.

His followers chose billionaires – and Musk dared Ms Ocasio-Cortez to run the same poll with her own followers.

The Tesla CEO recounted the exchange on last week’s podcast episode, saying that Ms Ocasio-Cortez “was like coming after me or some bulls**t, I don’t know”.

“She was saying billionaires are evil and you’re a billionaire therefore you’re evil,” Musk said. “And I was like, well you’re a politician.

“People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones,” he added.

Prince Harry’s charity, African Parks hits major milestone on Meghan Markle’s birthday

Prince Harry received an amazing piece of news on his wife, Meghan’s birthday, after being snubbed by her Majesty the Queen.

As Meghan Markle celebrated her 41st birthday yesterday, Prince Harry received some great news, The Sun reports.

The Duke of Sussex is the president of charitable organization African Parks, which announced on Meghan’s birthday it had completed a huge conservation project just days earlier.

Prince Harry’s patronage along with DNPW Malawi and IFAW Global translocated 263 elephants and 431 other creatures to safety to Kasungu National Park in Malawi.

This is an incredible achievement, as the Duke has been working closely with the charity since 2016.

It comes after the Duke’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, recently snubbed Harry in a speech she gave at Lambeth Palace.

However, the Queen did not wish Meghan a public happy birthday.

Her Majesty praised Prince Charles and William for continuing Prince Philip’s work for the environment.

During her speech to the 15th Lambeth Conference, the Queen said: “I was interested to learn that the focus of your program at Lambeth Palace today is a reflection and dialogue on the theme of the environment.

“A cause close to the heart of my late husband, and carried on by The Prince of Wales [Charles] and The Duke of Cambridge [William].”

Her Majesty made no mention of Prince Harry, and also did not publicly wish the Duchess a happy birthday.

Expert: Her Majesty’s Meghan snub is ‘remarkable’

Royals from across the Firm took to social media to wish Meghan Markle a happy birthday yesterday, but one key member was absent.

Her Majesty the Queen chose not to wish Markle a happy birthday, a decision which Royals expert Richard Palmer calls “remarkable.”

However, the expert explained why this decision may have been made.

Writing for the Daily Express, he said: “The Queen’s website neglected to mention the big day after deciding it will only mark the birthdays of non-working members of the family when they end in a zero.”

Meghan Markle is the victim of bullying, Trisha Goddard says

Meghan Markle has made headlines recently for her alleged acts of “bullying”, and in the process has copped a substantial amount of vitriol.

But now the tables have been turned in a Channel 9 60 minutes segment that dug deep into the latest royal scandal involving the claims that the Duchess of Sussex intimidated and belittled her staffers.

When the allegations first emerged, Buckingham Palace announced it was conducting an inquiry, but it has since said it won’t release the findings. It’s a curious move that’s left many puzzled. What did they discover, that they don’t want us to know about?

And could it be that the facts actually reveal instead of being the bully, Meghan is the one who’s been bullied?

In the segment, 60 minutess reporter Tom Steinfort asked British television host Trisha Goddard, a rare and staunch supporter of the Duchess of Sussex: “Who do you think is the victim of bullying?”

“Meghan Markle,” replied Trisha Goddard, who was also a former Australian TV star featuring on such shows as Play School.

“They can’t go too all out on Prince Harry, so let’s go for the evil scheming woman, that whole thing about women taking men away and driving them somewhere and destroying them. I mean how misogynistic is that?

“I think what’s she done wrong is not to be of the correct stock. I think what she’s done wrong is to be an American, to be an outsider… also she she’s a strong woman.

“I’m not saying she’s perfect, but I’m sorry but Prince Andrew doesn’t get as much consistent vitriol.”

Steinfort then asked: “So what do you think is at play here – is it sexism, racism, or a heady combo of both?”

To which Goddard replied: “It’s all those and above. We know through the polling that the Sussex’s poll highest among youngsters, under 25s.

“It’s the dinosaurs screaming when it comes to an outsider, and a female, and a female of color, then that is something that you are going to come down on because it shouldn’t be allowed,” she said on 60 minutes.

When asked if she noticed a pattern in the kind of people that attack Meghan, Goddard said: “Yeah. White, male, pale and stale”.

“Can we just stop messing around and call this for what it is – it’s bullying.”

She said it’s quite baffling why Prince Harry and Meghan are loved in America, but there’s so much controversy around them from the Brits.

“In the US people really like them they – they can’t understand what’s going on in Britain other than snobbishness, and I’m sure there’s a lot of that going on.

“You can’t blame them if they want to stay in the States can you?”

However, the bullying claims continue to swirl around Markle.

Also featured on the 60 minutes segment was Valentine Low, the royal correspondent for UK newspaper The Times. He said it was Meghan’s explosive Oprah interview that was the tipping point for several palace staffers who decided to reveal their claims of bullying to the world.

“What I was told was that in late 2018, Jason Knauf, who was Harry and Meghan’s communications secretary – so one of their very closest advisers – sent an email to his boss saying that Meghan had been bullying staff,” Mr Low said.

“He said that a couple of members of staff had been driven out by Meghan’s behaviour. and

he was also concerned for how much pressure was being put on their private secretary, their

very closest adviser, an Australian woman called Samantha Cohen.

“Now this was an explosive allegation, but the point is, nothing happened,” he said.

He said the palace simply didn’t know what to do.

“They didn’t know how to cope with such an unusual situation, and they didn’t know how to cope with Meghan.”
