Pokémon Presents Big Info Dump Announced Amid Alleged Leaks

The Pokémon Company announced its next Pokémon Presents livestream will take place on August 3. The upcoming info dump on pokemon scarlet and violet and other Pokémon games comes just in time as fans, desperate for new details, pour over a recent flood of alleged leaks for the earlier than expected Gen 9 entries.

The livestream is scheduled for 9:00 am ET and will last roughly 20 minutes according to the experts at the Pokémon news database Serebii. That’s plenty of time to offer updates on pokemon go, unite, and other spin-offs. But what fans are really hoping for is another detailed blowout on Scarlet and violetincluding more information about gym leaders, combat mechanics, and which brand new Pokémon its national Pokédex will feature.

Scarlet and violet were announced back in February, revealing starters Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly. Another bigger reveal followed in June around the time of Not-E3 showing off two new professors and other clues about the games’ open world. Not surprisingly, however, Pokemon fans want more information ahead of the November 18 release date, and they’ve recently been turning to an unprecedented series of alleged leaks to get it.

In mid-July, players spent days pouring over blurry, incomplete screenshots purporting to show new evolutions and battle mechanics. The leaks were allegedly from someone with access to an unfinished build of the game, and included lots of clues about the total number of Pokémon that would have been in the game as well as controversial design choices like gyms, which can be completed in any order, not scaling to the number of badges already collected.

Community debates and tons of fan art ensued, as well as fake leaks aimed at dunking on impatient fans. “It’s kinda Crazy what happened here,” one Pokemon theory and leak analyst who goes by 3clipse_tt on Twitter told Kotaku. “It’s more than 4 months before release this never happened if I recall. Usually it’s about 1 month before release that big leaks (especially with footage) surfaces the internet.”

Now fans will know soon enough how many of the purported leaks were legitimate or not. I’m sure the official info will keep them content for a couple weeks at least. The Pokémon Presents will be livestreamed here:

Cats Drop Ball in Ballarat

The Bendigo Bank Cats have taken a tough loss to the struggling Coburg Lions, continuing a run of seven straight losses.

The final score read 5.9 (39) to 12.11 (83) as the Lions ran out 44-point winners despite the strong form of AFL-listed Cats Nick Stevens and Sam Simpson.

Stevens showed his ability to gather the footy (27 disposals) while Jye Chalcraft (18 disposals, 8 clearances) worked hard through the contest and across the ground.

Sam Simpson (25 disposals, 8 clearances) put in a good effort as he gradually works towards a senior spot playing off half-back and through stoppages.

From the VFL-listed players co-captain Matt Ling (23 disposals, eight marks) can hold his head high after some quality work across half-back and up the wing, while Angus Byrne also performed strongly.

Meanwhile Zach Zdybel made his return to VFL footy and kicked a goal after being injured during the pre-season and earning his spot back in the side.

The loss rules out any hope of Geelong having a crack at playing finals with just three games left in the Smithy’s 2022 VFL season.

With a strong breeze making life difficult and generating plenty of boundary throw-ins, Coburg got off to a hot start and made the most of the wind at their back.

Unfortunately, even with the breeze, the Cats had a lot of trouble getting any momentum and decent transition throughout the match.

Geelong’s pressure was a big issue as Coburg amassed 105 marks to 58 from consecutive uncontested possessions and intercepts.

Geelong will now look ahead to their match against Sandringham at GMHBA Stadium, on August 7 at 1:05pm.

2022 Commonwealth Games continue; Indigenous Voice referendum announced; NSW COVID cases grow, Victoria COVID cases grow; ACCC flags gas shortage; foot and mouth disease fears grow

A volunteer-run mutual aid project backed by the Antipoverty Center has stepped in to supply free rapid antigen tests to concession card holders after a federal government program ended on Sunday.

The Ratbag project raised more than $2500 after launching on Twitter last night to ensure that welfare recipients could access RATs without having to sacrifice funds earmarked for food and other essentials.

“Without a RAT many welfare recipients will be forced to choose between leaving home while contagious or losing their poverty payment. Others will choose between food and testing,” Project coordinator Paul McMillan said.

“At a time when Covid cases are peaking and new strains are emerging, we can’t ask people who are already skipping meals, medication and other essentials to bear even more costs… The government continues to let these people down, but the community is stepping up.”

McMillan said the ending of the program was particularly risky for people who had to do activities to get their Centrelink payment, such as those on JobSeeker.

“While living on just $46 a day, those on unemployment payments are forced to leave home to attend activities. A positive COVID test is required to avoid payment suspension when isolating and PCR tests have become increasingly hard to get.”

He said the idea for the project came when Health Minister Mark Butler confirmed the Albanese government would not be extending the free RATs program launched by the previous Coalition government, against the urging of the Australian Medical Association.

McMillan said system outages on Sunday meant that some welfare recipients were unable to access RATs on the last day of the scheme.

The Ratbag mutual aid project takes donations online and distributes RATs to concession and low income health care card holders who register on its website.

Since launching on Sunday, it has also received donation offers from suppliers able to supply the tests in bulk.

People who do not have a concession card because they are unable to access a welfare payment can also submit a request for access to free RATs through the website.

North Queensland Cowboys beat St George Illawarra Dragons to leave Red V finals hopes on life support

“To be honest, it’s not really talked about much at training,” Hunt said. “I haven’t found it hard to block anything out…as players, you’re looking at your homework and trying to video on the Cowboys.

I hope [it can galvanise us]. If we want to make the finals it has to. But we’ve just got to win next week first and then get on with that.”

The Dragons next face arch-rivals Cronulla with their final hopes fading fast.

Griffin, who made the call to show his assistants the door at season’s end, added: “There’s never a right time. The club went through that process with everyone over the last month or so, but there’s never a right time.”

North Queensland’s triumph gives them a four-point buffer between second and third at the pointy end of the ladder, this their sixth win from seven starts. Significantly as the post-season looms, the Cowboys now boast a 7-2 away record, with Todd Payten especially pleased by his side’s composure.

“I challenged the lads to play our way and they did that tonight,” he said. “I’ve learned a bit about our team over the last 6-10 weeks around the type of language we use. We’ve got a really talented and excitable group. We play our best when we move the ball but we have to be clear around what that looks like.”

loading

But the Dragons -124 for-and-against trails fellow top-eight aspirants the Roosters (22 points, +89), Raiders (22 points, -13) and Manly (20 points, +8), effectively putting them a game further back in the finals race.

Their task gets no easier with arch rivals Cronulla next on the horizon.

The Cowboys weren’t at their best but as has been their wont, they found a way, livewire fullback Drinkwater especially, and repeatedly. I have finished with a double and a hand in another as one of the game’s most entertaining players.

North Queensland’s late flurry of points and a run home that features Cronulla, Canberra and Brisbane simply leaves the Dragons pretty much finished already.

Charges could come today in fatal stabbing of teen while tubing on Apple River

The Stillwater High School community is mourning the death of a 17-year-old student who was one of five people stabbed over the weekend during an attack while tubing on the Apple River in western Wisconsin.

Principal Robert Bach said in an e-mail to families following the death Saturday of incoming senior Isaac Schuman that “we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and everyone impacted directly or indirectly. … During this time of grief, we ask you to keep the family in your thoughts.”

A 52-year-old man from Prior Lake was arrested and remains jailed Monday morning pending charges. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects before they are charged.

St. Croix County District Attorney Karl Anderson said that “if charged this morning, he would appear at 1 pm [Monday] for [an] initial appearance.”

The victims and the suspect were all tubing down the river around 3:45 pm, Sheriff Scott Knudson said. The attack happened just upstream from the Hwy. 35/64 bridge in Somerset Township, close to the Minnesota border, and northeast of Stillwater.

“Deputies, as well as citizens, began providing medical care to the victims,” read a Sheriff’s Office statement.

The Apple River has long been a popular summer recreational destination for Twin Cities residents.

The surviving victims were all in stable condition, ranging from serious to critical injuries to their torso or chest, Sunday’s statement from the Sheriff’s Office read. They include two men from Luck, Wis., one 20 and the other 22 years old; a 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, and a 22-year-old man from Elk River. Their identities have yet to be released.

“Thank goodness a witness had taken a photo of him,” Knudson said. “Another witness located him at the exit of the tubing area, where he was taken into custody.”

“We don’t know yet who was connected to who, who knew each other or what precipitated it,” Knudson said. “It’s a tragic day.”

Two victims were flown to a hospital and two were taken by ground ambulance. Schuman was transported to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, where he was pronounced dead.

In his communication to high school families, Principal Bach added, “The death of a classmate, even for those who didn’t know them well, will impact each student differently, and all reactions need to be addressed with great care and support. We encourage you to talk with your children about this sad news and help them to process their feelings.

“Please let us know how we can continue to help you and your children as we work through this difficult process together.”

The iPhone’s ‘Focus Filters’ Can Help You Ignore Distractions Even Better

The iPhone's 'Focus Filters' Can Help You Ignore Distractions Even Better
Image: Khamosh Pathak

iPhone’s Focus mode, which is a supercharged version of Do Not Disturb, gains new contextual abilities with the iOS 16 update. Over the last year, the Focus mode has become an integral part of life for users who want to separate work from life, or for specific activities. And now, you can use a new feature called Focus Filters to automatically hide particular messages or emails when a Focus mode is engaged — and you can automate that, as well.

It works like this — you enable a Focus mode, like Sleep or Workout, and the iPhone can automatically hide messages, emails, Safari tabs, and calendar appointments from your work accounts. Not only will it mute notifications for incoming messages, when you open the apps, it will be like the conversations or messages never existed.

(note: This is a new feature in the iOS 16 update, which is currently available as a public beta. The wider rollout is expected in the fall.)

Go to Settings > focus and choose the focus mode you want to customize. From the Focus Filters section, tap “AddFilter.” You will see four app filters here:

  • Calendar: Choose a particular calendar to hide all the appointments during the Focus mode.
  • Email: If you use multiple accounts in the Mail app, you can choose to hide individual mail accounts for the duration of a Focus mode.
  • messages: The Messages app can help you filter out messages from everyone except selected contacts. For example, you can use a “Home” Focus to only get messages from friends and family, filtering out work messages.
  • Safari: If you use the Tab Groups feature in Safari, you can choose to hide particular Tab Groups when a Focus mode is engaged (this works for shared Tab Groups, as well).

Take some time to customize an App Filter. When you’re done, tap “donate,” and choose the “Add” option to add the filter to the Focus mode. You can do this for multiple App Filters across different Focus modes.

AFL 2022: Gold Coast Suns defeat West Coast Eagles, Jai Culley elbow, video

The Gold Coast’s tenuous final hopes are alive and kicking – but only just – after enigmatic

key forward Mabior Chol helped the Suns claim a thrilling three-point win over West Coast

at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.

The Suns led by 31 points early in the fourth term after a Chol goal but the Eagles stormed

home, kicking the next five majors to close with two points from the home side.

West Coast’s Jake Waterman had a kick to put the Eagles in front but hit the man on the

mark only to see the laconic Chol kick his career-high fifth goal soon after in his 50th senior

match.

The Eagles got within three points of the Suns with 38 seconds left after Waterman made

amends and kicked truly but a Malcolm Rosas goal put the four premiership points on ice.

Touk Miller and Noah Anderson were outstanding for the Suns in the midfield while Izak

Rankine kicked three goals for the home side while Jack Darling booted a bag of six goals for

the Eagles who were very well served by defending Tom Barrass.

The Suns are two wins outside the top eight with three games remaining in the season with

a 9-10 record, the second-best season returned for the Gold Coast since their inception.

The Eagles closed to within 13 points of the Suns on two occasions in the third term with

Darling taking his tally to four goals for the day in West Coast’s fightback.

The visitors kicked the first three goals after halftime until Anderson stopped the rot with a

lovely goal in traffic for the Gold Coast who enjoyed a 25-point advantage at the last change

after Chol kicked truly after the siren after a spectacular mark.

On the back of dominating inside 50 entries (33-17), clearances (23-14) and contested

possessions (69-53), the Suns took a commanding 30-point buffer into halftime.

Rankine had three goals to his name by the main break as the Gold Coast booted five goals

in each of the opening two quarters after a sloppy and sluggish start when the Eagles kicked

the opening two majors of the game.

The Suns were jolted into action and responded emphatically with the next five goals of the

match with Rankine’s showstopper from near the boundary line and Chol booting two goals

on the way to a 16-point cushion at quarter-time.

The Gold Coast continued on their merry way in the second term, extending their lead to as

much as 37 points with the Suns picking the West Coast backline apart with their glut of

possession and field position.

West Coast’s mid-season draft pick up Jai Culley may be having next weekend off. Culley

appeared to raise his right elbow and make high contact with Suns midfielder Noah

Anderson in the second quarter. The contact did not appear to be too severe as Anderson

played on but it was an ugly and completely unnecessary action for the 19-year-old who was

playing his third senior match for the Eagles.

He was subbed out of the game with a hamstring injury in the fourth term.

Friendships key to upward mobility: research – The Hill

Story at a glance

  • Childhood friendships between individuals of different economic classes in the United States is significantly associated with adult economic mobility, according to new research published in Nature.

  • The findings draw on data from 21 billion Facebook accounts.

  • In the future, researchers hope to conduct similar studies to determine whether or how social networks impact political affiliations or health behaviors.

The networks of relationships one develops over time, or an individual’s social capital, can impact different facets of life, ranging from education to health care.

In an effort to better understand what types of social capital matters for certain outcomes, a team of researchers conducted two studies assessing 21 billion Facebook friendships.

Results of these analyzes revealed a higher share of friends with higher socioeconomic status (SES) among those with low SES “is among the strongest predictors of upward income mobility identified to date,” authors wrote.

Defining this phenomenon as economic connectedness, researchers showed such friendships outweighed any other social capital measures, such as social cohesion, or cliques within networks, and civic engagement (volunteering), both of which had no strong association with economic mobility.

Notably, the data showed “if children with low-SES parents were to grow up in counties with economic connectedness comparable to that of the average child with high-SES parents, their incomes in adulthood would increase by 20% on average.”

Researchers hypothesize the lack of economic connectedness among certain societies can explain relationships between upward economic mobility and racial segregation, along with poverty rates and inequality.

The data are compiled into a website that breaks down associations between social capital and outcomes by ZIP code, county, high school and college.

For example, in Sampson County, NC, 23 percent of individuals’ friends are high-income, compared with 57.9 percent of friends in Santa Clara County, Calif. From 2016 to 2020, the median household income in Sampson County was $42,914, according to US census data. In that same window, the median household income in Santa Clara County was $130,890.

Because Facebook friendships were used as a proxy for real-life friendships rather than online networks, the studies did not yield information on the impacts of strictly online social networks.

To be included in the analyses, Facebook users had to have been active on the site at least once in the past 30 days and were on average between the ages 25 and 44. Individuals also had to have at least 100 friends based in the US and have a residential ZIP code listed.

“Many theoretical studies have shown how connections to more educated or affluent individuals can be valuable for transferring information, shaping aspirations and providing mentorship or job referrals,” authors wrote.

In the study, researchers defined SES on average income for individuals’ neighborhoods and any self-reported levels of education attained.

Those with higher SES tended to be friends with other high SES individuals, while “a one percentile point increase in one’s own SES rank is associated with a 0.44 percentile point increase in the SES rank of one’s friends on average.”

Although the study did show areas with higher economic connectedness had positive causal effects on children’s potential upward mobility, researchers cautioned that this connectedness might not be the best or most important measure of general social capital.

Data showed network cohesiveness measures, for example, were more strongly associated with differences in life expectancy among those with low income across US counties.

Additional research is needed to better understand how these social networks might influence political preferences or health behaviors.
