MMA world slams ex-UFC star for ‘soccer kicking’ knocked out opponent in the face

Mixed Martial Arts fans smoked at fighter Daichi Abe after he landed a brutal soccer kick on his already knocked out opponent.

The former UFC welterweight flatlined Brazilian Marcos Yoshio de Souza in the second round of their 176lb showdown at RIZIN 37 late last month, The Sun reports.

Abe shut De Souza’s lights off with a picture-perfect one-two in the second round of their showdown at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

De Souza crumpled to the canvas after the right hand connected and lay flat on his back unconscious.

But Abe didn’t stop there, launching into and landing a brutal soccer kick straight on the fallen and defenceless De Souza.

And fight fans were far from happy with the sickening strike.

One tweeted: “Soccer kick def uncalled for. Guy should be ashamed.”

Another said: “I’m all for soccer kicks, but IDK about when the dude is already f***ing knocked out.”

And another said: “Unfortunately… this is legal.”

Soccer kicks are illegal in most MMA promotions across the world including the UFC, which has adopted the unified rules of the sport.

But the sickening strikes — as well as knees to the head of a downed opponent — are legal in Asian-based fight promotions ONE Championship and RIZIN.

Several fans, however, have called for the strikes to be allowed in all promotions.

One fan said: “Best rule set in MMA.”

Another said: “MMA needs soccer kicks and knees to a downed opponent. The Unified MMA rules is garbage.”

Victory over De Souza saw 30-year-old Abe move to 5-1 in his last six outings.

University of New England vice chancellor resigns after schoolgirl assault charge

“There will be moments in the coming days and weeks to say personal things to individuals. As an end note – I wish to respectfully acknowledge the support of my colleagues both at University of New England and elsewhere.”

The university has been under pressure to stand aside Heywood since it emerged she was charged with common assault and behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place after an incident at the Armidale Ex Services Memorial Club on March 8.

The teen’s father said the incident occurred after a discussion at the event when the teenager approached another member of the panel to say that she related to that speaker’s experience of racism

“When she said that, the vice chancellor licks her finger with saliva and rubs it on my daughter’s face and says something to the effect of ‘Oh you’re brown, yes you’re right, it’s not coming off’,” the father said.

He rejected a police statement that emphasized there was no physical harm to the alleged victim.

“In this day and age, saliva on someone’s face, is that not an injury?”

NSW Labor’s tertiary education spokesman Tim Crakanthorp and local MP Adam Marshall joined the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) on Wednesday in calling for the university council to stand Heywood down pending the conclusion of the court proceedings.

Harris praised Heywood in Friday’s statement, thanking her for “her strong leadership of the university in navigating a period of tremendous change.”

He said Heywood had led important work in refocusing the university and creating new pathways for the institution.

“Professor Heywood considers it a great honor to have been the vice-chancellor and chief executive officer,” Harris said.

He said both Heywood and the university council acknowledged the deep hurt by many on hearing of the charges, thanking the community for its patience as it “worked through these matters”.

“The university council wants to clearly state that it remains deeply committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for its students, staff and community at all times,” Harris said.

The university’s deputy vice chancellor Professor Simon Evans will act in the vice chancellor role while a replacement is found.

NTEU NSW secretary Damien Cahill said Heywood’s resignation was appropriate under the circumstances.

“This affair does leave unanswered some very important questions that relate to governance at [University of New England],” he said.

“How long did the university know about these allegations that led to the VC’s resignation? Why were they silent for so long? There remains significant work to be done by the senior leadership to rebuild the trust of students, staff and broader community in this great public education institution.”

Entire E. Washington town told to evacuate ahead of wildfire

LIND, Wash. — An entire eastern Washington town was being evacuated Thursday because of a growing wildfire south of town that was burning homes, officials said.

At about 1:30 pm Thursday the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that about 10 homes in Lind had burned. Lind, with a population of about 500 people, is located about 75 miles southwest of Spokane.

“At this time all residents of the town of Lind need to evacuate immediately,” the sheriff’s office said in the post, adding that people could seek shelter at the Ritzville Grade School.

Later Thursday, officials clarified that six homes had burned as well as eight other structures.

Washington Department of Natural Resources officials said Thursday they expected the fire to pass through town, but Sheriff Dale J. Wagner said at about 5 pm that the fire was starting to calm down and that evacuations remained only on the south side of Lind.

“The information I have right now is it is starting to calm down,” Wagner said about the fire via Facebook video. “They will be fighting it through the night to make sure it doesn’t flare up anymore or get worse,” he said, adding that firefighters were dealing with high heat and windy conditions.

He said one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and was flown to Spokane for treatment.

The State Fire Marshal’s office said Thursday that state fire assistance was mobilized to help fight the fire, estimated to have burned about 3.9 square miles. Homes, infrastructure and crops were threatened, officials said. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

Westbound State Route 21 at State Route 395 was temporarily closed in that area. At about 3:30 pm, two airplanes and one helicopter had responded to help fight the fire, according to the sheriff’s office.

The new blaze was one of several that sparked this week around Washington.

A fire southwest of Spokane that started Wednesday burned at least two structures and authorities there were telling people in dozens of homes to evacuate. The state Department of Natural Resources said Thursday that the Williams Lake Fire had grown to 5 square miles (10.3 square kilometers) and was less than 10% contained.

Spokane County Fire District #3 Chief Cody Rorbach said two structures were destroyed. It wasn’t immediately known if those were primary residences, or actively in use. Williams Lake is about 32 miles (51.5 kilometers) south of Spokane.

The Cow Canyon Fire about 12 miles (19.3 kilometers) southwest of Ellensburg was also threatening structures and prompting mandatory evacuations after starting Wednesday afternoon.

That blaze prompted emergency evacuation notices for about 50 homes or structures 10 miles north of Naches, The Seattle Times reported. The fire had grown to 8.75 square miles (22. 6 square kilometers) by Thursday morning.

The Vantage Highway Fire near the town of Vantage, Washington, started Monday and as of Thursday had burned a cabin and three outbuildings, officials said on Thursday. The blaze was estimated at 26.5 square miles (68.6 square kilometers) with about 25% containment. Earlier evacuation orders for residents had been lifted as of Thursday.

Climate change has made the West warmer and drier over the last three decades and will continue to make weather more extreme and wildfires more frequent and destructive, according to scientists.

HRC Honda clear in Q1 as ex-Moto2 racer Nagashima stuns

Team HRC has established itself as the early squad to bear during this weekend’s Suzuka 8 Hours after Tetsuta Nagashima emerged to the top of the timesheets in both FP1 and Q1 by a huge margin.

Making his Suzuka 8 Hours debut this weekend alongside Takumi Takahashi and ex-MotoGP rider Iker Lecuona as part of the flagship HRC entry from Honda – one of 16 teams representing the marque at its home venue – Nagashima belied his relative inexperience at the venue by looking very much at home on it.

Stopping the clock for a best of 2m 05.823s in the two-hour FP1 sessionh, Nagashima went to take almost a full second off that benchmark in Q1 with a 2m 04.942s lap set in the first of the three 20min qualifying phases, slicing a full 0.2s off the lap record in the process.

With no other rider able to get close to his best time, Nagashima – who has not raced on a high-profile stage since announcing he would be quitting Moto2 at the end of the 2020 season – would end Q1 almost a second clear over nearest rival Niccolo Canepa on the YART Yamaha R1.

With the Q1 and later Q2 session split into three phases – designated for what organizers refer to as ‘Yellow’, ‘Blue’ and ‘Red’ riders, aka Rider #1, #2 and #3 respectively – while the first and second 20min sessions went ahead without issue, the third was met by rain falling at one sector of the lap, preventing those going last to get anywhere near the top times.

It meant six-time WorldSBK title winning Jonathan Rea’s efforts would be compromised, though Alex Lowes was still quick enough to put the Kawasaki Racing Team in third position, ahead of the domestic Astemo Honda Dream team of Terusuke Sakumoto, Kazuma Watanabe and Taiga Haneda was close behind in fourth.

SDG Honda Racing completed the top five thanks to a rapid lap by Teppei Nagoshi in the first session, relegating FCC TSR France – Honda’s nominated Endurance World Championship effort – down into sixth position.

Two more Honda teams filled out the top ten with Honda Sofukai Suzuka and Honda Dream Racing Team Sakurai ending Q1 in seventh and ninth respectively.

They sandwiched Spa 24 Hours winners BMW – the only entry in the entire field to be competing with European riders on a European motorcycle built by a European manufacturer – in eighth.

Defending EWC champions Yoshimura Suzuki Endurance Racing Team completed the top ten despite doing without its star rider Sylvain Guintoli, who skipped Q1 to rest a hand injury, while Gregg Black is a late addition to the line-up alongisde Kazuki Watanabe after Xavier Simeon was struck down by COVID.

Homeless man tackled by SA Premier’s security during press conference vows to fight charges

A homeless man who was tackled to the ground and arrested in front of the South Australian Premier at a press conference in Adelaide says he feels he was unfairly targeted by police.

Aaron John Rudd, 54, was arrested during a scuffle with security at a press conference held by Peter Malinauskas on Hutt Street in Adelaide on June 30.

A plain-clothed police officer asked him to move back because he was getting too close to the Premier.

Rudd was then escorted away by Mr Malinauskas’s security detail and handcuffed face-down on the pavement in scenes that were captured on camera by the gathered media.

Mr Rudd, who arrived at the Adelaide Magistrates Court today with a guitar, is charged with disorderly behavior and resisting police.

After his court hearing, he told the media he meant no harm when he moved closer to the press conference to see what was going on.

“I was just passing by and was curious to watch, see what it was about,” he said.

“I feel very much that I was unfairly targeted.

“I just think it was maybe the ignorance of the police officer, he should be trained better to be more diplomatic about these situations, it’s not the way to handle a situation like that.

“People like that they should be a bit more professional, treat the public with a bit more dignity and respect.”

Mr Rudd said he used to be a full-time carer and has been living on the streets since losing his job and felt passionately about advocating for the rights of disadvantaged people.

“I’m very compassionate and very passionate about street people,” he said.

“These people have a heart and I care for them, I like being around them.”

Mr Rudd said he did not know who Mr Malinauskas was, but felt it was his right to “bear witness” at the press conference.

He said the police officer and security detail were “aggressively intimating” towards him and he tried to defend himself.

“I pushed him, I met him with equal resistance. I was not charged with assault because, as I said to them, this will reflect in footage,” Mr Rudd said.

When asked by reporters if he might write a song about what happened, he said “maybe one day” and that it would be called “freedom for the people, a right to witness.”

The court case was attached to October.

Russia is ready to discuss prisoner swap with US after Griner conviction, Lavrov says

Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters in Cambodia that the Kremlin is “ready to discuss this topic, but within the framework of the channel that has been agreed by the presidents,” state news agency RIA Novosti reported.

“There is a specified channel that has been agreed upon by [Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden]and no matter what anyone says publicly, this channel will remain in effect,” Lavrov reportedly said Friday at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

Shortly later, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at the same summit that the US will “pursue” talks with Russia.

“We put forward, as you know, a substantial proposal that Russia should engage with us on. And what Foreign Minister Lavrov said this morning and said publicly is that they are prepared to engage through channels we’ve established to do just that. And we’ll be pursuing that,” Blinken told reporters at a press briefing.

The comments from each side suggest that a negotiation process, which has already proven complex, could accelerate in the coming days.

Russian government officials requested last month that a former colonel from the country’s domestic spy agency, who was convicted of murder in Germany last year, be included in the US’ proposed swap of notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner and Paul Whelan, multiple sources familiar with the discussions told CNN.
Whelan, a US citizen, has been held by Russia since 2018 and was convicted by a Russian court in 2020 on espionage charges that he has strenuously denied. Griner’s conviction has raised similar concerns that she is being used as a political pawn in Russia’s war against Ukraine. The US State Department classifies the pair as wrongfully detained.

Griner, a Women’s National Basketball Association star, pleaded guilty to carrying cannabis oil in her luggage as she traveled through a Moscow airport on February 17. She testified in court that she was aware of Russia’s strict drug laws and had no intention of bringing cannabis into the country, saying she was in a rush and “stress packing.”

Griner inside a defendants' cage before the court's verdict was announced on Thursday.

Prior to the verdict on Thursday, Griner apologized to the court and asked for leniency in an emotional speech. “I never meant to hurt anybody, I never meant to put in jeopardy the Russian population, I never meant to break any laws here,” she said.

“I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn’t end my life here. I know everybody keeps talking about political pawn and politics, but I hope that, that is far from this courtroom,” she continued.

Griner’s lawyers had hoped that her guilty plea and statements of remorse would result in a more lenient sentence.

Her conviction, Blinken told reporters, “puts a spotlight on [Washington’s] very significant concern with Russia’s legal system and the Russian government’s use of wrongful detentions to advance its own agenda using individuals as political pawn.”

“The same goes for Paul Whelan,” Blinken added.

Earlier Friday, a US State Department official told reporters there had been no “serious response” from Russia on a proposed swap. The same official said Blinken and Lavrov had not met while at the Cambodia summit, and that Blinken had no plans to do so.

Before the start of Thursday’s WNBA game between Griner’s Phoenix Mercury and the Connecticut Sun, members of both teams linked arms around center court, and a 42-second moment of silence was held by Brittney Griner.

Near the end of those 42 seconds, members of the crowd started chanting, “Bring her home! Bring her home!”

CNN’s Martin Goillandeau and Daniel Allman contributed to this report.

Toyota to buy back faulty Toyota BZ4X electric cars

US customers are being offered the chance to return new Toyota electric cars because the wheels could fall off.

US owners of the landmark Toyota BZ4X electric car affected by a safety recall are being offered a buy-back deal.

The refund is the next step in a recall program centered on 260 cars already delivered to customers.

The Toyota BZ4X, which is promised for Australia next year but already running three months late, can potentially suffer from a problem where the wheel hubs loosen to the point that a wheel can fall off.

As yet, Toyota does not have a solution to the problem.

“No-one should drive these vehicles until the remedy is performed,” Toyota USA said in a statement on its website.

In the new development, reported by the website Carscoops after an owner posted on Reddit, Toyota is adding a potential buy-back in addition to support that already runs to a loan vehicle, free fuel for the loan car, $US5000 towards repayments on their vehicle, and an extended warranty.

Exact details of the buy-back on the Toyota BZ4X, which is priced from $US42,000, are not clear despite one owner posting some information.

“The terms for the repurchase may vary, depending on your state and particular circumstances,” Toyota reportedly said.

As yet, there is no news from the USA about the effect of the Toyota buy-out offer on its Subaru twin — the Solterra — with reports that none of the 403 cars involved had been delivered to owners.

2023 Ford Mustang not only keeps the V8 alive, but will up the ante to BMW M3, Audi RS5 and Mercedes-AMG C63-beating levels: Report – Car News

Ford is preparing to unleash the seventh-generation Mustang with an unveiling planned next month at the North America International motor show, but details are already leaking ahead of its debut, including the V8 version’s new outputs.

According to Ford Authority in the US, the same 5.0-litre Coyote petrol V8 will be under the long bonnet of the new Mustang, but instead of the 339kW/556Nm output as seen in the current GT, power figures are set to increase substantially.

Ford has supposedly managed to squeeze almost 500 horsepower from the engine, or 373kW.

Read more about the Ford Mustang

Keep in mind, the most powerful naturally aspirated Mustang to land in Australia so far has been the Mach 1, which made 345kW/556Nm from the Coyote V8.

For reference, the Mustang was also available in R-Spec guise, limited to 500 units, which upped the ante to 522kW/830Nm thanks to a Herrod Performance supercharger fitted locally.

The new 373kW output could be reserved for the top-spec, new-generation version of the Mach 1 or another special model, but if it is for the base tune for the new GT, expect further improvements for higher variants.

If the rumors prove to be true, Ford’s Mustang will easily outclass much more expensive performance coupes like the Audi RS5 (331kW/600Nm) and BMW M3 (353kW/550Nm), while also coming close to the Mercedes-AMG C63 (375kW/ 700Nm) and Aston Martin Vantage (375kW/685Nm) – the latter two of which use a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8.

Aside from the petrol V8, the new-generation Mustang will also come to market with the carryover 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, which in its current form makes 236kW/448Nm.

Likewise, the six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic options are expected to carryover with the familiar engines, feeding drive exclusively to the rear wheels.

Exterior styling of the new-gen Mustang is also expected to be familiar to those acquainted with the current sixth-generation model, with slight tweaks to the front and rear fascia as Ford makes the most of its front-engine, rear-drive platform.

What is expected to be new for the Mustang however, is the interior, which is said to score a flat-bottom steering wheel and larger multimedia touchscreen, while the all-digital instrument cluster is said to carryover.

Of course, no pricing and spec details are yet to be revealed for Australia, but the next-generation Mustang will continue to be built at the Flat Rock plant in Michigan in factory right-hand drive for the local market.

This should enable Ford to keep price rises to a minimum.

The 2022 Ford Mustang kicks off at $52,590 before on-road costs for the manual 2.3-liter High Performance fastback, and extends to $75,990 for the automatic-only, V8-powered GT convertible.

After Ford’s new Mustang breaks cover next month, it is expected to roll out to the US first in 2023 before arriving in Australia either late next year or early in 2024.

The Titans have kicked off the scoring in the second half, courtesy of a pinpoint grubber to find Brian Kelly.

The Storm still hold the upper-hand as the score sits 22-14, but are without star halfback Jahrome Hughes who didn’t take the field after halftime due to a shoulder injury.

44TH MINUTE

AJ Brimson has delivered a pinpoint grubber to open the scoring in the second half, finding Brian Kelly.

Jahrome Hughes has remained off the field after halftime due to a shoulder injury, with Tyran Wishart slotting into the halves.

“All of a sudden the Titans are up and about,” Dan Ginnane said.

30TH MINUTE

Titans forward Herman Ese’ese scored his side’s second try, charging onto an AJ Brimson short ball to spark a comeback.

“What is going on?” Dan Ginnane said.

But, Storm gun Cameron Munster stopped Holbrook’s side in their tracks, slicing through to score his second.

15TH MINUTE

After making a late switch to fullback, Cameron Munster has crossed for his side’s second try of the night to make the score 10-0.

Halfback Jahrome Hughes put in a cross-field kick, finding Munster flying high to score untouched.

“I think he will like the challenge at fullback,” Shane Flanagan said.

“This is ominous,” Dan Ginnane said.

Only moments later, backrower Kenny Bromwich crossed for a four-pointer of his own before Titans gun Beau Fermor scored the Titans first.

Storm debutant David Nofoaluma has come desperately close to scoring only seven minutes into the Titans contest, before the returning Xavier Coates crossed.

Holbrook’s Titans have struggled so far in 2022, but the Gold Coast side will be looking to young gun Jayden Campbell to provide spark from the back.

AJ Brimson also makes up a new halves pairing with Tanah Boyd, who will play in the No.7 jersey.

As it stands, the Titans sit outright last on the competition ladder recording only three wins in 2022 — and with another defeat at the hands of the Storm could find themselves even further away from the pack.

15th place Tigers take on the Knights, who sit in 14th place, and with a win could cement a two-win gap in the wooden spoon race.

Kari Lake clinches Arizona governor’s primary in win for Trump

Former television news anchor Kari Lake is projected to win Arizona’s Republican gubernatorial nomination, handing a high-profile win to former President Trump.

The Associated Press called the race at 10:09 pm ET on Thursday, two days after votes were cast.

Polls in the lead up to Election Day showed Lake leading Karrin Taylor Robson, who had the backing of Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) and former Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump last year endorsed Lake, who touted the former president’s unfounded claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

The race became a proxy battle between Trump and Pence, with the former president and vice president holding dueling rallies in the lead-up to the election.

Lake’s victory is the latest for Trump in Arizona. Venture capitalist Blake Masters won the GOP Senate nomination and election denier Mark Finchem won the Republican primary for secretary of state.

Lake, who is among the most vocal critics of the 2020 election, will face Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D), who became nationally known for pushing back on claims of election fraud, in the general election.
