Andy Roddick has expressed his opinion on Serena Williams’ retirement. Roddick and Serena have known each other since they were eight and have always had a great relationship. Roddick told: “I have a strange feeling.
I had no inside information, so it came as a shock to me too. We knew this day would come sooner or later, but the news of her retirement from Ella left everyone speechless. In addition to having won a lot, Serena Williams has managed to break into people’s hearts.
I was lucky enough to have a front row seat at Serena’s show. We met at the Rick Macci Tennis Academy when I was 8-9 and have always had a great relationship. Serena and Venus changed our sport, becoming two of the greatest athletes ever.
Thanks to Richard for allowing these two girls to perform at the highest level. They did a lot for tennis.” The very young Emma Raducanu also paid tribute to Serena: “I think she has definitely changed the game. I think no player has been as dominant as she is.”
Serena’s retirement
Less than three weeks before the start of the US Open, the tennis world has been shocked by sensational news. Through an article published in Vogue, Serena Williams announced that her retirement from her is now imminent.
The American legend hasn’t indicated a precise date, but she has hinted that the US Open 2022 will be her last professional tournament. “I have to evolve, go beyond tennis, focus on things that are important to me,” said Serena after beating Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in Toronto.
Barring an unlikely backlash at Flushing Meadows, the 23-time Grand Slam champion won’t be able to match Margaret Court’s all-time record. Williams, who will turn 41 on September 26, has become a global icon along with her sister Ella Venus and has written very important pages in tennis history.
Seaworms known as the termites of the sea are attacking what is thought to be the wreck of Captain James Cook’s flagship the HMB Endeavour, leaving timbers honeycombed, according to a marine biologist.
Marine invertebrate expert Reuben Shipway, based in the United Kingdom, noticed the damage as soon as he dived on what remains of the wreck in the murky bottom of Newport Harbour, thebostonglobe is reporting.
A maritime museum diver at what is believed to be the wreck of HMB Endeavour.
Shipworms had torn through the timber, carving a labyrinth of tunnels leaving what looked like a honeycomb.
Shipway said the exposed pieces of wood on the harbor floor were being eaten from within by a species known as Teredo Navalis, or naval shipworm. “That damage is ongoing,” he said. “The shipworms’ guts are full of wood.”
He said there was also damage happening from the outside and that he had found evidence that a crustacean species called gribbles had eaten at the wood. About 10 to 15 percent of the ship that may be Endeavor is estimated to remain, the report says.

The report is the latest episode in a stoush between the Australian National Maritime Museum and its research partner, the Rhode Island Maritime Archeology Project. In February, the Museum’s then chief executive Kevin Sumption said that the wreck was positively identified as the Endeavor. But the Project’s lead researcher, Kathy Abbass, promptly dismissed the claim as a “breach of contract” and “premature”.
She said the jury was still out and that their conclusions would be driven by proper scientific process rather than “Australian emotions or politics”. She is expected to release her findings shortly, possibly this month.
Daryl Karp, the museum’s new director and chief executive, told the herald last month the museum was now even more confident the wreck was the Endeavour.

In other news, THQ Nordic teased a South Park game yesterday alongside announcing Alone in the Dark revival.
Canberra has ended a tumultuous week in perfect fashion after holding on to beat St George Illawarra 24-22 to keep its season alive.
In Sunday’s later match, Gold Coast snapped a 10-match losing streak with a 44-24 win over Manly in Robina.
With coach Ricky Stuart banned from attending Canberra Stadium and speaking to his players as part of the fallout from his tirade at Penrith’s Jaeman Salmon, the Raiders survived a late scare to finish round 22 one match outside the top eight.
Canberra assistant coach Brett White said Stuart would have been on edge as the Dragons threatened a late comeback to steal the match.
“He wouldn’t want it to be about him, we’re still fighting for finals, we’re still punching away,” White said.
“The week is done, ‘Sticky’ (Stuart) will be back in on Wednesday, and it’s all finished as far as we’re concerned.
“He’s done his time and what Ricky’s done for this club… what he’s done for the community, that’s who he is.”
Dragons’ five-eighth Talatau Amone had looked to end the Raiders’ season with a late onslaught, completing his first career hat-trick before creating Tautau Moga’s 75th-minute try, only for Zac Lomax to push a potentially equalizing conversion attempt wide.
It allowed the Raiders to end round 22 still one match back from the eighth-placed Sydney Roosters with three rounds remaining before the finals.
Young fullback Xavier Savage had his fingerprints all over the Raiders’ win with two try-assists, including a sweet grubber kick that allowed winger Albert Hopoate to score.
With star prop Joe Tapine missing because of a rib injury, the Raiders’ forwards shared the workload.
They were led by Josh Papalii (140m), Ryan Sutton (110m) and Hudson Young (67m), who scored the opening try of the match from a Zac Woolford grubber kick.
“The leaders have been fantastic this week … that’s where the drive this week really came from and why we’re able to just keep things as normal,” White said.
“While there’s a chance, we’ll keep fighting and I just said to the boys we’ll just keep punching away.”

The loss removes the Dragons’ from the finals equation, having won just one of their past six matches in a disappointing end to their year.
They hit the front in the first half as Amone twice capitalized on soft Canberra defensive efforts to score tries, but could not stay with the Raiders when their intensity lifted.
“(Amone) was outstanding, it’s been a tough year for ‘Junior’, first year as a full-time starting five-eighth … in our most important game of the year I thought he really stood up which is great,” Dragons coach Anthony Griffin said.
“Against good sides playing away from home, we just gave them points too easily at different times and it was too hard to reel back.
“But that’s not to question the character we showed all day.”
Titans post drought-breaking win
The Titans got on top of the Sea Eagles in the first half.(AAP: Jason O’Brien)
The Gold Coast halted its losing streak and essentially ended Manly’s season with an upset win over the Sea Eagles.
Playing without inspirational captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui due to the impending birth of his second child, the Titans ended a run of 10 consecutive defeats with Beau Fermor scoring a double in the much-needed victory.
The 20-point loss means the 10th-placed Sea Eagles are six points outside the top eight with three matches to play.
Given eighth-placed Sydney Roosters hold a significantly better differential, it would take a miraculous set of results for Des Hasler’s team to reach the finals.
Adding injury to insult for the Sea Eagles in Hasler’s 300th match as Manly coach, flying winger Jason Saab suffered a suspected ACL injury in the second half.
The match started ominously with Titans’ prop Jaimin Jolliffe spilling the ball on his first carry from the kick-off.
Haumole Olakau’atu thought he had got the visitors in front in the fifth minute when he crashed over but the try was disallowed after a video review showed Martin Tapau had knocked-on in the build-up.
Jolliffe made up for his early error, hanging onto an offload from Fa’asuamaleaui’s replacement Jarrod Wallace to give the Titans an early lead.
Reuben Garrick hit back for the Sea Eagles but Dylan Walker’s sin-binning in the 20th minute changed the match.
Walker had only just come onto the field from the interchange bench when he was sent to the sin-bin and placed on report for a high tackle on Titans’ winger Jojo Fifita.
The youngster scored off the resulting set to put Gold Coast back in front after a great cut-out pass by halfback Tanah Boyd.
Jake Trbojevic’s 25th-minute try, despite a desperate effort from Titans’ fullback Jayden Campbell to hold up the back rower, again leveled the scores with the Sea Eagles still down a player.
But Gold Coast took an eight-point lead into the break after Brian Kelly’s intercept try from a Daly Cherry-Evans pass and a penalty conversion from Boyd.
Desperate to avoid a second wooden spoon in four years, the Titans raced to their biggest lead of the game with tries to Fermor and AJ Brimson early in the second half, putting them 20 points clear with 25 minutes to play.
David Fifita then delivered the highlight play of the day, busting through Manly’s defense before sprinting clear to score.
Brad Parker and Tolutau Koula added some gloss to the scoreline for the visitors with late tries before Fermor’s late run through some tired Manly defense ensured Gold Coast move above Wests Tigers and off the bottom of the ladder.
This turned out to be a far more exciting week for Nintendo fans than previously expected, thanks to showcases for both Splatoon 3 and Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak DLC that gave us tons of insight into upcoming features and modes. As part of the Splatoon 3 Direct, we also learned of three new Splatoon amiibo that will release this year.
In other news, someone recently discovered that a classic SNES game has secretly offered two-player all along. Plus, we finally found out when Kirby Dream Buffet will release and how much it will cost. Want more info? Read on!
Splatoon 3 Direct shows off first Splatfest, new idols, stages, features, amiibo, and more
On Wednesday, Nintendo’s Splatoon 3 Direct gave us 30 minutes of information about the upcoming game. Much of that half hour was jam-packed with tons of new information, including new abilities, weapons, features, and characters.
Perhaps the biggest announcement was that Splatoon 3’s very first Splatfest will have three competing sides to choose from instead of only having the traditional two. The topic: Rock, Paper, or Scissors?
Splatfest will take place on Aug. 27 from 9 am PT–9 pm PT.As part of this, we got to see the three new idols who are all part of Deep Cut. They are Shiver, an Octoling with blue hair (Rock); Big Man, a large stingray (Paper); and Frye, a yellow-haired Inkling (Scissors).
Another exciting announcement was that we’ll be getting Splatoon 3 amiibo. There’s a purple-haired Octoling, a yellow-haired Inkling, and a Smallfry surrounded by Salmon eggs and blue paint. While it’s unclear what exactly these amiibo will do in the game, we do know that they will be releasing “this holiday.”
The game file will only take up 6GB of space when it launches on Sept. 9, but you’ll want to make sure you have enough on your microSD card all the same.
Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Digital Event shows off several new modes and
This was a busy week for showcases since the Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Digital Event also took place on Tuesday. Here, we learned more about new monsters coming in the update, as well as new Anomaly quests that started coming into the game on Aug. 10.
Hunters who reach Master Rank 10 in the Sunbreak DLC unlock the ability to go up against Gold Rathalos, Silver Rathian, Lucent Nargacuga, and Seething Bazelgeuse — all formidable monsters in their own right. Lucent Nargacuga is especially dangerous since it can turn invisible for stretches, making it hard to pinpoint.
The Anomaly quests present the ability to fight frenzied monsters, a new kind of challenge. As we now know, frenzies are caused by the vampiric Elder Dragon Malzeno. The leech-like creatures clinging to its body from him, called Qurio, suck the life from others and cause creatures to go crazy.
Weekly updates are also incoming, bringing Dual Threats, a mode that gives you the objective of defeating two powerful monsters instead of just one. To initiate these, you’ll need to talk to the Courier and discuss “Add-on Content” with them. Even more big updates are incoming, so we’ll have to wait and see what Capcom has in store.
Kirby Dream Buffet gets release date and low price point
Thanks to a tweet from Nintendo on Thursday, we now know that Kirby’s Dream Buffet is rolling out on Switch next week, Aug. 17. Additional information was also provided for the competitive multiplayer game, including modes, character customization, and pricing.
Players can participate in Gourmet Grand Prix, Race, Minigame, or Battle Royale modes, and each offers a different challenge to keep things interesting. To help you race ahead of the competition, you can use Copy Foods to gain different abilities. For instance, Burning Pepper makes you go faster, while Hyper Tornado allows you to spin and pull items in like Strawberries so you can get stronger. Players can also choose the color of their Kirby character and can unlock silly hats for the puffball to wear.
It’s a cute, simple multiplayer game that looks like it could be enjoyed by people of all ages. The lack of complexity might have something to do with the low price tag, too. Kirby’s Dream Buffet sells for only $14.99 and is currently available for preorder on Nintendo’s website.
There’s one big thing to be aware of, though. When looking on the official website, I found that the game can only support up to two players on a single Switch, but if you want to have a local four-player game, two Switch consoles must be used. Considering how big TV screens are these days, you’d think they’d allow for four players locally. The game also offers online play for up to four players who have Nintendo Switch Online, so it’s likely you can play with your friends, though no party codes have been mentioned yet.
Waluigi bachelorette party rocks Tiktok
If you’re on Tiktok, then you might have seen a popular video showing several different people dressed up like various Waluigis for a bachelorette party. The playful variants say who they think will get the drunkest during the course of the evening and introduce themselves as Cowboy Waluigi, Sexy Firefighter Waluigi, Cult Waluigi, Chef Waluigi, Pirate Waluigi, Strongman Waluigi, and Elvis Waluigi (the bride).

♬ FEEL THE GROOVE – Queens Road, Fabian Graetz (opens in new tab)
While to some of us who understand the charm of the much underappreciated evil Luigi doppelganger, some people might be confused by this party choice. But thanks to Kotaku, we know why this was the bride, Emily Yates’ (aka @cherriessorbet on Tiktok), preferred way to celebrate.
“I knew when I was thinking about my future bachelorette party that I wanted to do a chaotic costume night. I’ve seen some really good ones online themed around Guy Fieri and Shrek, but I wanted something I hadn’t seen yet!”
She went on to explain he’s, “just a lanky being of pure chaotic energy.” Seems like a perfectly silly evening to have with your closest friends. Although, she says that when she first told people about her idea many people were confused and couldn’t understand why she would do something like this. But as she said, “It doesn’t really make sense, and that’s why I wanted to do it!”
The group says it received a lot of positive reactions when they went bar hopping on a Tuesday night and have been happy to find that every comment they’ve read on the video has been “very positive and wholesome.”
Despite the hilarious bachelorette party, Yates says she intends to have a “traditional” wedding. So don’t expect to see a follow-up Tiktok of Elvis Waluigi getting married.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass courses leak thanks to music files found in datamine
We’re currently on Wave 2 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, but it seems that the coding within the update actually had more information on following courses than Nintendo wanted us to know about. We’re about to discuss spoilers so if you don’t want to know anything more stop reading here.
According to Oatmeal Dome on Twitter, “Nintendo accidentally left many music preview files in the version 2.1.0 update, allowing us to identify multiple unreleased courses!” In another tweet, they go on to explain that while Nintendo deleted the music files from the ROM themselves, additional files stored in a separate place that contained music file info hadn’t been deleted.

With this information, dataminers could determine all but six of the courses in the next four waves. Of course, it’s good to take this all with a grain of salt. It’s possible the cups and courses, or at least the way they line up, could change between now and when the next waves release.
Turns out Super Punch-Out!! has had a secret two-player mode the whole time
Games can hold secrets for years without getting discovered, and we just learned this week that this was the case with Punch-Out!! (thanks Nintendo Life). Turns out that this popular SNES game from 1994 secretly had a two-player mode all along, but it was only just discovered 28 years later.
You don’t even need to hack the game or have any additional accessories to access the multiplayer mode. Just have the second player press the Y and R buttons and then have the player one press the Start button. Crazy right? Makes you wonder what other classic games out there are still hiding an undiscovered mechanic.
This fall will be exciting
With five Nintendo Switch exclusive AAA games in the pipeline the next three months will be very interesting, indeed. Kirby’s Dream Buffet still has yet to be given a release date, but it’s supposedly launching this summer. Then there’s Splatoon 3 blasting onto Switch on Sept. 9, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope launching on Oct. 20, Bayonetta 3 releasing Oct, 28, and last but certainly not least, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet launching on Nov. 18.
I’ll be here to cover any exciting news that gets revealed or leaked from these highly anticipated games, so check back for each week’s Nintendo recap.
The lightning bolt hit a tree about 30 meters north of the oval, and close to parked cars.
John Mckinnon, a committee member of St Joseph’s club said he had “never seen anything like it” in over 40 years of involvement in community football.
He said the parents of one player were in a car meters away from where the lightning hit a gum tree and got a bad fright.
Mckinnon said the first two quarters of the game, which started at 2.10pm, were played in bright sunshine.
No one was concerned when, at the quarter time, St Joseph’s life member Ray Hoadley warned the umpires of a thunderstorm forecast for later in the game.
loading
“He said, ‘there’s going to be some bad weather coming through’, and everyone goes, ‘yeah no worries Ray’. But he was checking the weather system on his phone and he was true to his word from him, ”Mckinnon said.
Mckinnon said during the third quarter, big black clouds blew in from the east, the temperature dropped about five degrees and “we didn’t get rain, we just got hail. It lasted for two or three minutes.”
“The lightning and thunder came and it was pretty horrific. All the players just ran off the ground.”
Mckinnon said the umpires suspended the game after an initial burst of thunder and lightning but the players came back onto the field after a few minutes.
“There was more lightning and thunder and they said no, it was too dangerous and came back off the field.”
That was when lightning hit the tree on the north or You-Yangs side, about 30 meters from the oval.
No one was injured and no property was damaged but the game was called off.
The Morning Edition newsletter is our guide to the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
This week, Lumina unveiled an upcoming product that could revolutionize working-from-home forever. The Lumina Desk feels like the desk of the future that we should have had a decade ago.
The star of the show is the desk’s 24-inch OLED screen integrated into the tabletop. This screen shows you information from apps such as Google Calendar, Google News, Slack, Spotify, Twitter, Instagram, Robinhood, Health, Messages, Clock, Weather, and Todoist. But, you can probably expect more compatible apps to be announced before the desk’s mid-2023 release.
The integrated display is a non-touch screen to avoid accidental inputs from items placed on the surface. You’ll control the display through the computer you connect to the desk.
This standing desk measures 29.5 inches wide and 59 inches long, so you’ll have room for everything you need. Plus, you can adjust your height from a low of 30 inches to 47 inches tall. And its aluminum alloy and stainless steel construction and anti-glare reinforced glass tabletop surface mean it can take a good deal of punishment.
Desks are often cluttered with devices that need charging. Lumina has you covered there too. The Lumina Desk features two 20×20-inch wireless charging pads on either side of the integrated display, as well as six power outlets and six USB-C ports tucked away in its 826 cubic inches of cable management space.
A desk this revolutionary will set you back a few bucks, though. Lumina hasn’t disclosed the price of the desk yet, but states in the product’s FAQ section that it should fall in the “mid-$1000 range.” If you’re ready to get the desk of the future today, you can get on the waiting list and make a deposit through Lumina’s website.
Paul Green’s high school sweetheart has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the former rugby league coach after his tragic death rocked the NRL community this week.

The Courier Mail reports Green called his friend and longtime manager George Mimis at 4.30pm on Wednesday to speak about his son’s birthday celebrations.
The News Corp publication also reports the footy legend’s wife Amanda found him unresponsive at their home after returning from doing pilates at the gym.
Green’s death comes 11 months after he was sacked as head coach of the Maroons following Queensland’s loss in last year’s State of Origin series, which included a 50-6 win for the Blues.
Speaking on Gold Coast’s 92.5 Triple M Breakfast show, radio announcer Ali Plath fought back tears while grieving the loss of her first love.
“My heart is breaking today for his wife Amanda and his beautiful kids and obviously his parents, and his four siblings,” she said.
“Paul and I went to high school together, he was my first love. You only get one first love.
“We were together when I was in Year 12 for a year and then we split up. I had kids with (former partner) Mark and when that didn’t work out, Paul and I got back together.
“We then did nine years of on-off, long-distance, de facto… I guess we were that couple that I think our family and friends were so much happier than we were when we finally split up.
“Paul was a wonderful stepdad to my two older kids Jesse and Jake when we all lived in Sydney together when I finally had the courage to move them.

“For him to swallow his pride and I guess take my kids under his wing, I really didn’t appreciate how big that was at the time. It’s a big responsibility taking on someone else’s family.
“Paul was extremely loyal, he was highly intelligent — even though I used to tell him I was smarter than him. When I was in Year 12, he was two years older than me, and he was getting up for not doing my schoolwork.
“He just had such a great sense of fun as well as being so capable. If Paul said to you, ‘I’m going to be a pilot’, (you knew) he was going to be a pilot. And he did – he was a commercial pilot.
“My mum let him take me to Hervey Bay in this mosquito airplane when he was doing his training. That’s how capable Paul was. You trusted him, you knew he could do it, I never doubted him.
“He was just one of those people who you knew you could rely on. (As an NRL player), he was one of those players you could count on and he would give his all of him.
“I can’t believe that he’s done this, I can’t believe this has happened.
“That’s not Paul. I’m actually in complete and utter shock. I only spoke to him a couple of months ago.
“It’s horrible.”

Meanwhile, Green’s family is still coming to terms with the footy legend’s passing and revealed plans for a celebration of his life.
Green’s brother Rick told The Sunday Mail the family had come together to plan a public funeral, expected to be held August 23 or 30 at Kougari Oval, the home of the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls, a team Green both played with and coached to premiership glory.
But Rick also revealed the family was struggling to come to terms with the enormous loss.
“Everyone is feeling overwhelmed,” he told The Sunday Mail.
“There’s certainly a lot of stories that we’re sharing about our times with Paul but as we reflect on those good times, there’s a great sadness at his passing.
“It’s still very raw and difficult to process.”
The family had earlier released a statement after the news broke of Green’s death.
“Today we are devastated,” the statement began.
“We have lost a devoted husband, loving father and wonderful brother and son. We cannot find the words that would come close to expressing our feeling, however we would like to extend our thanks to those who have reached out to us with their love and support.
“Paul was loved by so many and we know that this news will generate immense interest, however at this time we ask for privacy.
“Our family is still trying to understand this tragedy and we request space and time as we come to terms with this loss. Thank you.”
