Serge Lutens created a cult unisex fragrance, but he doesn’t wear perfume

Each fortnight, Stephanie Darling gets inside the head of an industry expert or media personality. This week, she talks to visionary Serge Lutens.

The perfumer prefers to seek inspiration from within: “My approach is a purely personal one.”

Born in 1942 in the north of France, Serge Lutens’ early life was hard but when he was 14 an apprenticeship at a hair salon prompted a fascination with the world of beauty. In the 1960s, Lutens worked with Christian Dior on creating a make-up line, then became the creative director for Shiseido in the 1980s. He launched his first scent, the cult unisex fragrance Féminité du Bois (myer.com.au, $213), in 1992.

What I’m loving right now Finding somewhere I can’t be reached for solitude and distance.

Favorite fragrance I don’t have a favourite, nor do I wear any.

Inspiration I haven’t been inspired by anyone; my approach is a purely personal one. It finds shape at a particular moment: a perfume can take shape in an aeroplane, a train, at home.

The rule I live by Life is floating. The idea that life will come to an end helps me quicken the pace.

favorite color Black, of course. It’s the refuge of all colors and complements all of them. Also shades derived from blue, including violet and fuchsia. I find it difficult to talk about color without contextualizing it.

my mantra I like simple, ordinary, unexpected things – there’s something wonderful about them. It doesn’t come from material, physical objects. It’s simply a connection with ourselves.

Bulldogs vs Cowboys, Murray Taulagi no-try, Valentine Holmes knock-on, video, result

Just a fortnight after they were gifted a win from a controversial Bunker call, the Cowboys were on the other end with a try being disallowed in their 28-14 win over the Bulldogs.

Although the Cowboys walked away with the win, there’s question marks over a Murray Taulagi try that was disallowed half way through the second half.

Taulagi crossed untouched in the corner to give his side a two-point lead with 20 minutes to go only for the referee to send it up to the Bunker.

Ricky apologizes for salmon spray | 01:04

“I’m looking for a bat-on, whether it goes forward,” referee Adam Gee said.

The play in question was Tom Dearden’s cutout pass to Taulagi that clipped Valentine Holmes’ shoulder before landing in Taulagi’s hands.

“It’s not a knock-on when it comes off his shoulder,” Fox League commentator Brenton Speed said.

“It goes back anyway,” Steve Roach added.

Speed was confident that “this try will stand”, however, Bunker official Matt Noyen ruled it a no-try saying “the ball touches the upper-arm, shoulder of Valentine Holmes… we’re supporting the on-field decision of the ball traveling forward.”

‘He pretty much saved my life’ | 01:07

Both Speed and Roach were stunned by the call.

“It seems to me that we always find a way of why it’s not a try now,” Roach said.

“He was standing behind him, so how does it go forward?”

Sideline commentator Billy Moore agreed with Roach saying, “for me that was a try.”

The call didn’t mean too much in the context of the game though, with the Cowboys going on to score three more tries to seal the win.

It comes just two weeks after the Cowboys were on the other end of a contentious Bunker decision when they escaped with a controversial 27-26 win over the Tigers.

The Cowboys were awarded an escort penalty and Valentine Holmes slotted a goal on the siren to steal the win. Even coach Todd Payten conceded afterwards that the call was “debatable.”

Thousands of dead fish are washing up along a California river. It’s because of a massive wildfire and flash floods, the Karuk Tribe says

The blaze, which has killed at least four people, erupted on July 29 in the Klamath National Forest near the Oregon border. It’s the largest wildfire in California so far this year.
Meanwhile, intense thunderstorms and heavy rains that rolled through the region this week prompted a flash flood warning for Klamath River from the National Weather Service on Tuesday. Officials warned that areas that had been burned by the wildfire were at higher risk of floods and mudflows — because of the lack of vegetation that would have otherwise been there to help absorb the water.
According to the US Geological Survey, “fast-moving, highly destructive debris flows” caused by heavy rainfall are “one of the most dangerous post-fire hazards.”
According to a news release from the Karuk Tribe, their preliminary observations suggest “massive debris flows” following the flash floods in areas impacted by the blaze are the cause for the dead fish.

“We know the dissolved oxygen in the river plummeted two nights in a row as these pulses of mud hit the main stem of the river, so it is very clear to us that we had a high intensity fire and then we had a flash flooding event kind of come behind the fire and it just rushed ash and debris and mud into the river,” Tucker told CNN on Saturday.

“Virtually everything in the river died,” he said, adding that they don’t yet know for how many thousands of the river the dead fish stretch as the area is still largely restricted because of the blaze.

“We are trying to work with the incident command for these wildfires to do a real assessment,” Tucker said. “We see there are thousands of fish floating downstream, but we really are having a difficult time figuring out how bad it is.”

Dead fish have been seen as far as 20 miles from the source of the debris flow, the tribe’s news release said.

“The severity of the event is impossible to characterize until biologists can make direct observations in currently restricted areas,” the release said, adding it’s unknown how this might affect the fall migration of Chinook salmon, which is just starting.
The fire, which has been burning in Siskiyou County for more than a week, has scorched more than 60,000 acres of land and was 30% contained as of Saturday morning as hot, dry and breezy conditions continued, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Its cause is under investigation, officials said.

Kylie Jenner and daughter Stormi, 4, support Travis Scott at London gig

Kylie Jenner showed her support for her partner Travis Scott as she and daughter Stormi, four, attended his concert at London’s O2 on Saturday.

The reality star, 24, took to Instagram and shared a heartwarming snap of her, Stormi and Travis, 31, all wrapping their arms around each other backstage at the event.

The rapper is in the midst of a comeback after a deadly stampede claimed 10 lives at his Astroworld festival performance last year.

His latest concert did not proceed without incident, as an audience member threw a heavy object onto the stage, but missed Travis.

Travis appeared to be irritated by the disruption to his set, but he kept rapping and refused to allow the disturbance to get in the way of his performance.

Kylie posted an Instagram album of the concert after it was over, including a picture Stormi in her lap as they proudly watched Travis perform.

Once the concert got rolling, Kylie and Stormi had pride of place in the audience, where one of her pictures showed the mother-daughter duo festively throwing their arms up into the air as Travis performed below.

Kylie’s post also featured a video of her and Travis strolling hand in hand through a parking lot, firmly putting on a unified display.

She threw in a video that appeared to show Travis pumping himself up with the help of his pals before he strutted onto the stage.

He shouted with excitement several times, kicking at a door and thundering down the hallway as his friends sprayed him with water.

Along with Stormi, Kylie and Travis share a son whom they welcomed this February, but the baby was absent from the album.

Travis’ London concert came days after he announced his upcoming residency Road To Utopia, to take place at Resorts World in Las Vegas.

In November, when Kylie was pregnant with their son, she attended Travis’ Astroworld festival concert where a deadly crush of bodies occurred.

The death toll from the tragic incident rose to 10 when a nine-year-old boy named Ezra Blount succumbed to his injuries.

Footage shows the music briefly stopped as an ambulance tried to get through the crowd, but then the music resumed and Travis vowed to make the ‘ground shake.’

His performance, which also included a surprise spot by Drake, went on for half an hour after the fire department declared a ‘mass casualty event.’

The Harris County Institute Of Forensic Sciences released the autopsy results in December, revealing all of the victims died of compression asphyxia.

Travis sat for an interview with Charlamagne Tha God that month and said he was only told through his earpiece to leave the stage after Drake’s guest spot.

He maintained he was unaware of the scale of the problem while he was onstage, and claimed to have met with some of the bereaved families.

Dozens of lawsuits cumulatively worth billions of dollars were filed against Travis and the companies behind the concert in the aftermath of the deaths.

It emerged this February that nearly 400 lawsuits against Travis Scott and Live Nation were rolled up into one for purposes of efficiency.

A class-action suit this May claimed over 4,900 people were injured during the show, with 732 requiring ‘extensive medical treatment,’ according to Rolling Stone.

When news of that lawsuit went public, an insider in Travis’ camp said to TMZ: ‘It’s very clear that the tide is turning as the authorities and public conversation has been focused on concert operators and security contractors rather than performers.’

Travis largely pulled back from the spotlight after Astroworld, and plans for him to appear at Coachella this year were scrapped.

Only recently has he begun to perform onstage again, and on the Fourth of July he briefly stopped a show on Coney Island so he could to instruct fans clambering onto a metal truss: ‘We need y’all to get down,’ in order to maintain safety.

Alabama town disbands police department over racist text

VINCENT, Ala. — A racist text message sent by a police officer has prompted officials in a small Alabama town to disband their police department and fire the police chief and assistant chief.

Vincent Mayor James Latimore on Thursday confirmed that Police Chief James Srygley and Assistant Chief John L. Goss had been dismissed, al.com reported.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on Friday condemned the two officers’ actions and said it stands with the city “in providing emergency law enforcement related service to the citizens (of Vincent) at this time.”

In the message, which recently surfaced on social media, someone identified as “752″ texts: “What do y’all call a pregnant slave?” An unidentified recipient responds twice: “?” and “??”

“752″ answers: “BOGO Buy one, get one free”

“This has turned this community apart. It doesn’t matter what color we are as long as we do right by people,” City Councilman Corey Abrams said during Thursday’s council meeting.

On Tuesday, Latimore said “appropriate action has been taken” against the officer alleged to have sent the text, though at the time he would not name the person or anyone involved.

The city’s website lists three people in its department: Srygley, Goss and Officer Lee Carden.

During the council meeting, Latimore announced he had suspended the chief and assistant chief, and the council voted to end the agency. Latimer said Carden turned in his resignation via text message just hours after the city council voted to dissolve the department.

Located in central Alabama, southeast of Birmingham, Vincent has a population of just under 2,000 people. It’s located in Shelby, St. Clair, and Talladega counties.

Girls would ‘bribe security and be in our hotel rooms’: Taylor Hanson

Taylor Hanson is a musician best known for his pop band Hanson. The 39-year-old opens up about how his mum helped make Hanson happen, finding fame at a young age, and married life.

My maternal grandmother, Jane was a homemaker, always cooking and sewing and running the office for her builder husband. They worked well as a team. She was also an artist who loved to sketch. She was warm and made you feel welcome in her home.

“I was so passionate and focused on what I was doing with my career up to that point that I was never interested in girlfriends – even though girls were always trying to get our attention.”

My mom, Diana, is a force of nature. She she’s a doer; you never have to ask her to do anything because she’s one step ahead. Ella’s willingness to encourage individuality in her children made a huge impression on me as a kid. We broke out making music really young as siblings [with brothers Isaac and Zac in the band Hanson]and it was Mom who saw that in us and encouraged it.

Mom could have had a full career as a singer. She had a scholarship to attend college to do this but she did not like the culture. She channeled her energy into her family and kids. She raised seven children with my dad, Walker, whom she met at high school in Oklahoma. We spent a lot of time being home-schooled or attending an international school when we lived in Latin America, where Dad worked as an accountant.

When I was nine, we performed a cappella in a church and got a standing ovation. Mom organized it but she wasn’t a stage parent. It was her lust for her for life and experience that drove her. Our musical start as Hanson the band was organic, visceral and natural, thanks to her from her. Mom got us into a recording studio after this show; we nailed all the songs we knew and recorded until midnight. That was in 1995.

I have three sisters. The eldest, Jessica, is five years younger than me. She took on an older sibling role to her children under her. We have a very special relationship and are a tight family unit. Jessica is more behind the scenes and doesn’t like the spotlight. She is incredibly kind and deeply loyal.

loading

My middle sister, Avery, is 31 and the other artist in the family – she’s a painter. She has a similar personality to Mom in that she can just walk up and have a conversation with anyone with zero apprehension. Our youngest sister, 24-year-old Zoe, was just an infant when we were touring the world as teenagers. It’s a different dynamic. She grew up knowing she had famous brothers.

I was mobbed by girls when we found fame as Hanson but I was awkward; I never felt comfortable wooing the opposite sex. I had a lot of female friends growing up because they were interested in having conversations and reading books, not because I wanted a romantic relationship.

The Crows spoiled the party as they recorded the 16.6 (102) to 13.8 (86) win, but it was still Kennedy’s day as he slotted a stunning eight goals in his final AFL outing.

Kennedy got it started in the first quarter when he slotted the Eagles’ first three goals before slotting another in the second to head into the break with four to his name.

Fans watching on were calling for the Eagles to keep targeting him and he responded with two more in the third quarter.

The Eagles entered the final quarter down by 17 points and a valiant effort saw them soar back into the contest with Kennedy slotting his seventh and eighth goals.

Kennedy had a chance to kick his ninth and level the scores, but he pulled the shot left and watched it sail through for a behind.

“Missed the easiest one of the day, but look it was a great fight. Adelaide brought the contest but it was a good game to be a part of for me last game,” Kennedy said on Fox Footy after the final siren.

“I’m a bit emotional but it has been good.

“I’ll have a few beers tonight and then I’ll probably reflect on it over the next couple of weeks. It’s been an amazing journey. I’d like to thank the club, the fans… it’s been a crazy journey.

“The boys were looking for me a fair bit, they were feeding me all day so I was lucky enough to get around a few so it was good to finish off like that.”

The Optus Stadium crowd rose as one as Kennedy made his way off the ground as both the Eagles and Crows players got together and formed a guard of honor.

Kennedy’s career began back in 2005 when he was taken with the fourth pick in the National Draft by Carlton. I have played 293 games throughout his career and tallied 723 goals.

After two seasons with the Blues, Kennedy was involved in a blockbuster trade that sent him to the Eagles and brought Chris Judd to Carlton.

His final outing had the footy world in utter disbelief as his eight goal outing was the most in a single game throughout the 2022 season.

Authorities investigate possible connection after 4th Muslim man slain in Albuquerque

Authorities are trying to determine whether the slayings of four Muslim men in Albuquerque, including one overnight, are connected.

Three of the killings have happened in the last two weeks, and one occurred in early November, Albuquerque police said. All four victims are Muslim men from South Asia.

Friday’s shooting was reported just before midnight on the edge of a community known as the International District, southeast of downtown, Albuquerque police spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said at a Saturday news conference.

The victim is a man in his mid-20s whose identity has not been confirmed, police said.

“With previous three murders we mentioned on Thursday, there is reason to believe this death is related to those shootings,” Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said.

Police have refrained from saying the killings were motivated by hate. “We don’t know that at this point,” Gallegos said.

Albuquerque police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos addresses the media Saturday about the slayings of four Muslim men since November.
Albuquerque police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos addresses the media Saturday about the slayings of four Muslim men since November.K.O.B.

Local, county and federal officials have joined the investigation, and patrols in key areas of the city were being beefed up.

On Saturday evening, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said she was sending additional state police to the city to help bring the person or people responsible to justice.

“The targeted killings of Muslim residents of Albuquerque is deeply angering and wholly intolerable,” she said in a tweet.

The two other recent attacks have included the July 26 killing of Pakistani immigrant Aftab Hussein, 41; and the Monday slaying of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, near the University of New Mexico.

Mayor John Ramon Vigil of nearby Española said Hussain, a Pakistani immigrant who had received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the university, was the city’s planning and land use director.

“Tuesday would have marked his first-year anniversary leading the city’s planning team,” Vigil said in a statement this week. “Our city staff has lost a member of our family, and we all have lost a brilliant public servant who wanted to serve and improve his community from him.”

In its statement Saturday, the Albuquerque Police Department clarified that it’s trying to determine if the Nov. 7 attack of a Muslim man from Afghanistan is related to the others.

In that attack, police said the body of Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, was found in a parking lot behind the halal meat market he owned with his brother.

At a news conference Thursday, police alerted the Muslim community about the slayings to-date and to ask the public for assistance tracking down the killer or killers.

“We want the public’s help in identifying this cowardly individual who in all three cases ambushed their victims with no warning, fired shots, and killed them,” Albuquerque Police Deputy Cmdr. Kyle Hartsock said Thursday.

On Saturday police noted that the latest attack thought to be connected to the spree happened after that widely covered news conference.

“Right now this is an alarming death that connects to the others as far as we can tell,” Gallegos said Saturday. “It’s surprising this happened so soon after we spoke on Thursday.”

Albuquerque Crime Stoppers offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible.

The national Council on American-Islamic Relations has offered an additional $10,000. The organization called on President Joe Biden’s administration to take a “direct role” in the investigation.

“The lives of Albuquerque Muslims are in danger,” CAIR national deputy director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said in a statement Saturday. “Whoever is responsible for this horrific, hateful shooting spree must be identified and stopped — now.”

Ahmad Assed, president of the Islamic Center of New Mexico, said at the news conference Saturday, “This is not the New Mexico I grew up in, love, and cherish.”

He thanked law enforcement for his response and said, “We will defeat evil and hate together.”

While authorities stopped short of saying victims were targeted for their religion or ethnic backgrounds, Michelle Melendez, the city’s equity and inclusion director, raised the possibility at Saturday’s news conference.

“We cannot denounce strongly enough what appears to be the targeting of people because of their race and religion,” she said.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also involved in an investigation.

Wedding makeup artist shares the five mistakes brides make while getting ready for their big day

Wedding makeup artist shares the five mistakes brides make while getting ready for their big day – and the beauty product she swears by for dewy skin

  • Makeup artist Kelly Mills has shared a TikTok video about the modern bride
  • She has spent more than 50 separate mornings with brides on their wedding day
  • So she has some advice to offer those who might make common ‘mistakes’
  • She says keep the party ‘small’, get ready an hour early and ensure you eat is key

An Australian bridal makeup artist has shared the major mistakes she sees her clients make on the morning of their wedding day that causes undue stress.

Kelly Mills, who works out of Melbourne, Victoria, took to TikTok on July 28 to address some of the key problems she has witnessed in the dressing room before a bride walks down the aisle.

‘I am extremely single but this is the advice I have saved in my brain from spending 50+ mornings with bridal parties,’ she said.

One of the most important things to remember is that not everyone is needed in the bride’s room to help her get ready for the day, and the less the better according to Ms Mills.

‘The only people that will be there will be me and my bridal party and maybe mum if she’s got her nerves in order,’ she said.

‘Then your photographer, your makeup artist and your hairstylist.’

The more people involved in the beginning formations of your wedding day the more nervous energy is threatening to bubble to the surface.

Next, Ms Mills notes how important it is to feed and hydrate both the bride and her party before festivities begin.

‘It’s a big morning and a very big day,’ she said. ‘And by hydrate, I mean water, coffee, mimosas.’

One of the most important things to remember is that not everyone is needed in the bride's room to help her get ready for the day, and the less the better according to Ms Mills

Another glaring problem is how long brides give themselves to get ready, with 30 minutes ‘just not enough time’ for the photographer to snap enough pictures and for any touch ups to be applied.

‘The photographers need a good chunk of time to get good snaps and if the bride has only an hour to take photos before she needs to leave, she will be “super stressed,”‘ Ms Mills said.

For those looking to give themselves an all-over glow on the morning of their wedding, Ms Mills’ top skincare tip is to use Go-To’s Transformazing face masks 30 minutes to an hour before getting their makeup done.

But only if they’ve tested the mask ahead of time and know they won’t have an allergic reaction to the ingredients.

‘You’ll be glowing all day long,’ she said.

Finally, she urges brides to download a good playlist, prepare some drinks and snap away on polaroid cameras to cherish the memories of the big day.

‘It’s the time in your day with your girls and guys – if there’s guys there too – that’s just for you,’ said Mills.

‘Make it fun, it’s your wedding morning. It should be nothing but happy good times.’
