Google Pixel 6a review: Cutting the right corners

Google has released the latest Pixel phone, but it’s not the one you’re probably thinking of.

While the tech giant will unveil their latest flagship devices later this year, a new affordable Pixel has made its way to our shores.

The Pixel 6a costs less than it’s two bigger siblings, yet retains a lot of what makes a Pixel a great alternative to Apple’s smartphone lineup.

Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >>

How do I get it and what will it cost?

Pixel 6a is available in chalk, charcoal and sage for $749.

You can buy from the Google Store, JB HI-FI, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, Officeworks and Harvey Norman.

Who is it good for?

Google’s Pixel series has always been a popular choice for those who want a phone that is guaranteed to see fast updates to both the operating system (Android) and the security of the device.

Pixel 6a continues on this, and has the advantage of having a few of the bugs ironed out that plagued the older Pixel 6 smartphones since last year.

If you want a great little performing mobile, that comes with Google’s great cameras and smarts – then you’ll be quite happy with your choice.

How does it work?

The Pixel 6a differs a little bit to the $999 Pixel 6.

You won’t get the same high quality, high refresh rate screen that can be found in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. While the 6.1-inch flat display is totally acceptable in daily use, if you’re used to the 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rates that are popping up on other phones, you might miss it.

There’s no zoom camera, and the main camera lens is very old hardware (in terms of technology). In saying that, the photos that you can take using the Pixel 6a put some other phones with newer lenses to shame. Google’s software is unmatched when it comes to computational photography.

While the camera isn’t as versatile as what you’d get out of the Pixel 6 or Pro models, the shots I was able to achieve from this little pocket rocket were nothing short of impressive. Night photos, or when there isn’t much light, were a bit more hit and miss though.

But to keep that price down, some corners needed to be cut. Because that’s basically all you’re going to lose between the next Pixel up.

The Pixel 6a has the same Google Tensor processing chip as the other two more expensive phones in the series, comes with the same software experience, haptic feedback is fantastic, the stereo speakers are loud and clear, and after the last update – connectivity has been greatly improved while using the three major Aussie telcos.

The software is also the same as you’d see in the flagship phones with all the photography features like ‘real tone’ to ensure skin tone in photos is correct, night sight and magic eraser – which removes unwanted objects and people from your shots.

Outside of Google’s photography voodoo, you also get some really helpful features such as Hold For Me and Call Screening. There is also live captioning while you watch video content, and live translate to help with any language barrier that comes your way.

During my two weeks with the Pixel 6a, the battery life was what impressed me – and that’s probably down to a lower refresh rate on the display compared to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. From waking at 5am in the morning with full charge, to end the day at 10pm with 30 per cent left – it’s very reliable.

There has been a lot of noise around the fingerprint sensor allowing non-enrolled fingers to unlock the device. I wasn’t able to replicate this between over 10 people, so I feel this is a non-issue if you’ve seen that reported elsewhere.

What we think

Pixel 6a is a very compelling device for the masses. There will be quite a lot of people out there who don’t care about the highest megapixels on the cameras, or the biggest refresh rate on the display.

While there are a few things that have been downgraded or left out from the latest in Google’s A-series, what has been left in is what’s important here.

It’s at a hugely competitive price for what you are getting – and it ticks all those boxes that most people are looking for in a smartphone. Good display, dependable battery, great cameras, and reliable performance and software experience. Big ticks all round.

You really can’t go wrong with the Pixel 6a if your budget won’t stretch past $800, and there’s nothing that comes close to it in the same price range. But if you can afford the extra money, the Pixel 6 will offer you some additional benefits over the Pixel 6a that you might enjoy – including that flat display.

Sennheiser promises 60 hours of listening with its new Momentum headphones

Sennheiser hasn’t refreshed its over-hear Momentum noise-canceling headphones since 2019, but that changes today. The company has announced the Momentum 4, a new take on its flagship headphones that includes an exterior redesign, new features and a whopping 60 hours of battery life. What’s more, Sennheiser is offering this host of updates for $50 less than the Momentum 3 at its debut.

First, the design Sennheiser had carried through much of the Momentum line since its introduction is gone. The mix of metal and leather with visible cables has been traded for a more simplified, more plastic affair. The new look is decidedly less premium than previous Momentum models. However, what the Momentum 4 may lack in aesthetics is offset by increased comfort. The company notes the new hinge easily adjusts and doesn’t exert too much pressure on your head. Earcups also rotate flat now, which makes storage a bit easier. Another big change is the on-board controls: most of the physical buttons have been replaced with a touch panel on the right side.

Sennheiser Momentum 4

Sennheiser Momentum 4

Inside, Sennheiser says it opted for an “audiophile-inspired acoustic system” that relies on 42mm transducers for the sound. The company explains the setup creates “brilliant dynamics, clarity and musicality,” plus you can use an EQ, presets and a new Sound Personalization feature to further adjust the tuning. Sound Personalization takes into account your personal preferences and adjusts “the listening experience” accordingly.

Of course, these are flagship headphones so active noise cancellation (ANC) is on board. The company says its updated adaptive ANC works to maintain sound quality even in the noisiest of surroundings. Transparency Mode is available as well and there’s a slider control between it and ANC in Sennheiser’s app. In other words, you’re not just left with one or the other, so you can mix in a dash of environmental noise if needed. This model can automatically change sound settings based on your location too, a feature Sennheiser first debuted in March.

Sennheiser also offers a feature called Sidetone, which allows you to adjust how much of your voice comes through during calls. It’s a tool that helps you feel less shouty and it works on top of automatic wind noise suppression for the Momentum 4’s beamforming microphones during voice and video chats.

Sennheiser says you can expect up to 60 hours of battery life on a charge, and that’s with ANC turned on. A quick-charge feature gives you six hours of use in 10 minutes. To help you conserve battery, the Momentum 4 is equipped with both automatic pausing and automatic on/off. The company says the headphones will power off when you leave them unattended and turn back on when you pick them up.

The Momentum 4 will be available for preorder in black and white color options on August 9th before shipping on August 23rd. The headphones are priced at $349.95, which is $50 less than the Momentum 3 when it debuted in 2019.

Parallels Desktop 18 boosts performance, compatibility

It’s August, so it’s time for a new version of Parallels Desktop. The latest release of the company’s popular virtualisation software – Parallels Desktop 18 – features support for the newest Macs and preliminary support for macOS Ventura.

Parallels Desktop 18 includes compatibility with ProMotion displays, and when used with an M1 Ultra based Mac Studio delivers up to 96% faster Windows 11 performance thanks to the ability to assign more RAM and CPU cores to a VM.

An interesting touch is that Bluetooth game controllers connected to the Mac are available in Windows with no additional setup.

And on the subject of games, frame rates up to 120fps are available on ProMotion displays. Desktop 17 topped out at around 59fps.

Improved USB 3.0 support allows the use of peripherals such as webcams, video capture devices, and specialized hardware such as the Elgato HD60 S game capture device and the SOCT Copernicus REVO optical coherence tomography device for ophthalmologists.

Changes to the Parallels Tools component of Desktop provide even wider compatibility with Windows 11 apps when running on Apple Silicon. For example, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive now runs (it wouldn’t in Parallels 17), and issues around re-saving files from certain Microsoft Office apps to shared folders have been fixed.

Parallels senior product manager Kurt Schmucker pointed out that Windows 11 for ARM provides a very high level of compatibility – 99.99% – with Intel-based applications, including AutoCAD and games.

“There are very few apps that don’t run,” he said.

ITWIRE PARALLELS DESKTOP 18 NEW PERFORMANCE 705

Parallels Desktop 18 still comes in standard, Pro and Business editions.

New features of the Pro edition on Apple Silicon Macs include virtual machine control via the command line interface, the Network Conditioner for simulating less than perfect connections, full VM isolation, remote profiling with Visual Studio, and support for netboot with Linux.

The Business edition can now be activated via a corporate account and single sign-on, easier and better documented deployment of Windows 11 VMs, reactivation from the cloud, and the ability to manage analytics participation via Parallels’ My Account portal.

Parallels Desktop 18 initially runs on macOS Mojave, Big Sur, Catalina and Monterey, and will run on Ventura – complete with Stage Manager support – once that version of macOS is released to the public.

On Intel-based Macs, supported host OSes include Windows 11 back to XP (or Windows 2000 in conjunction with Boot Camp); macOS from Ventura back to Lion; and various Linux distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Debian, Mint, Red Hat, Suse and Kali).

A smaller range of host OSes is supported on Apple Silicon systems: Windows 11 and 10, macOS Ventura and Monterey, and Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian and Kali with ‘one-click’ installation, plus RHEL and CentOS via manual installation.

“We are proud of our engineering team that continues to be at the forefront of innovation to offer a remarkably more powerful and seamless Parallels Desktop for Mac experience to our users, that is integrated with the latest macOS Ventura, optimized for the latest Apple hardware, and offers valuable features to deliver even better productivity and performance,” said Corel chief technology and product officer Prashant Ketkar. (Parallels was acquired by Corel in 2019.)

“This is as simple and easy to use as it gets, and our users can rely on Parallels Desktop for Mac to focus on the job at hand.”

Parallels Desktop still includes licenses for Parallels Toolbox (a wide-ranging suite of more than 50 utilities) and Parallels Access (remote access).

The standard edition of Parallels Desktop costs $139 a year. A $179 perpetual license is available on special request for organizations with policies that prohibit the use of software on subscription, but not to individuals.

The Pro edition is $169 a year, and the Business edition costs $209 a year.

Upgrades from any previous version of Parallels Desktop to Desktop 18 Standard cost $99, but this converts a perpetual license into an annual subscription.

Upgrades from any previous version to Desktop 18 Pro cost $99 a year.

The Marina Bay Grand Prix. Picture: Call of Duty

A map based on the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix circuit will be in the next Call of Duty game.

Marina Bay Grand Prix is set to feature as a playable map in Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, the latest installment in the first-person shooter video game franchise.

According to developers Infinity Ward, the six vs six player map will see combat occur within an urban race circuit, around a pits and paddock complex.

The video flythrough of the map was revealed at the recent Call of Duty League Championship Weekend in Los Angeles, California.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGIwZOC7hTU

In the video flythrough, it is clear the map is a digital re-make of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, with open-wheelers sharing the likeness of Formula 1 cars, Marina Bay track branding, and a ferris wheel based on the Singapore Flyer featuring prominently.

There appears to be no officially-endorsed Formula 1 content in the game.

While the unofficial F1 and Call of Duty crossover is largely unexpected, it is not the first instance it has happened, with seven-time world champion and Call of Duty fan Lewis Hamilton voicing a non-playable character named Carl Hamilton in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

One of the best selling video game franchises of all time, the Call of Duty series has sold over 400 million units worldwide.

The 2022 Singapore Grand Prix will take place around the Singapore Street Circuit on October 2, prior to the release of Call of Duty Modern Warfare II on October 28.

iOS 16 beta brings back the battery percentage icon

Earlier today, Apple released the fifth iOS 16 developer beta. It, but if you’ve spent any time on Twitter, you know there’s only one thing everyone wants to talk about: the return of the battery percentage indicator. For the first time since Apple removed the icon in 2017 to accommodate the notch, it’s possible to see exactly how much battery your iPhone has left without pulling down the Control Center shade.

If you’re enrolled in the developer beta, you can add the indicator to your status bar by opening the Settings menu and navigating to the Battery section. Once there, you’ll see a new toggle labeled “Battery Percentage.” The resulting icon is slightly larger than the one you’re probably used to seeing. Additionally, if you plug your iPhone into a charger, the icon will turn green and display a lightning symbol next to the battery percentage. Conversely, it’s yellow when your iPhone is in low power mode.

The option to see battery percentage is not available on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 mini. We’ll also note it’s possible the feature may not make it into the final release of . The next version of Apple’s mobile operating system will arrive later this year. Some of the more notable features Apple announced at WWDC 2022 include new lock screen customization options, the ability to edit and recall texts in iMessage and real-time notifications called Live Activities.

More than 70,000 Amazon shoppers rave about this Contigo travel mug — and it’s 50% off

Making a daily commute with a hot cup of coffee is like navigating an obstacle course. A disposable paper cup won’t keep your coffee hot for long, while a plastic coffee mug will leave you prone to spills, which can be dangerous. Luckily, Amazon has a one-day sale happening on the mega popular Contigo Autoseal West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug. Just for today, it’s almost 50% off!

Shoppers are absolutely obsessed with this mug. In fact, it has more than 69,800 perfect reviews, which is mind-boggling even by Amazon standards! It’s on sale for just $14 (originally $26), and you can get it in a slew of different colors.

This handy travel cup features Contigo’s “Autoseal” technology, which shuts the mug’s mouthpiece after every sip. The Autoseal prevents any hot liquid from spilling or leaking, even if the mug is turned upside down or accidentally falls to the ground. To open and re-open, just push the large button on its screw-on lid for a swig.

There’s also this cool feature to consider from a five-star reviewer: “I love that you can drink out of either side of the lid. So, if you grab the mug with your left hand, you can bring it right up to your mouth.” and take a sip. Same with grabbing it from your right side. You don’t have to turn the mug around or find the hole to take a sip.”

Have mug, will travel. (Photo: Amazon)

The West Loop mug fits in most car cupholders and the screw-on lid is top-rack dishwasher-safe. Contigo recommends hand washing the stainless steel body.

“The unicorn of all travel cups!” wrote a smitten shopper. “This travel cup pretty much has everything you could possibly want. It’s beautifully designed and fits well in the cup holder of my car. The finish is very artistic, and I love that it is powder-coated, making it extra durable, not slippery, and fingerprint-proof. They have redesigned the lid so that it’s now easy to clean. It keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for a long time. But most important, it is truly leak-proof, and it’s designed very intuitively with the button that you press to drink right where you hold the cup…I really couldn’t be any happier unless they were free.”

A fellow happy customer pointed out that it can keep “coffee hot for hours” and “iced tea cold for hours.”

Again, this is a one-day sale. Don’t miss your chance to grab a next-level travel mug while you still can!

5 Games From The Steam Survival Fest To Avoid Dying In

Surviving is hard in general. First, you have to wake up, and that’s already a whole thing. Survival games take this concept and say, “Fuck you, there’s also a monster maybe. Also if you don’t eat 14 servings of the same thing right now, you will die.”

The Steam Survival Fest is a current event that puts a spotlight on all sorts of survival games big and small, deadly and not so deadly. There are some great games to revisit, some new games that slay, and some upcoming games to look out for.

I’ve decided to pick a few of my favorites from the spotlight event as a little nudge in my subjective direction. Some of them are new, and some of them are old. However, the older titles are games that I would recommend revisiting in the cursed year of the lord Beelzebub.

Please… Take a look.

Dinkum

survival games
Image: James Bendon

[Link]

I’ve talked about Dinkum before, but I thought I’d include it since it’s part of the list and I love it. Dinkum is a life/farming survival sim where you build a town from the ground up in an Australia-inspired landscape.

The survival aspect comes in the form of the classic hunting and eating to survive, but also the fact that there are wild beasties that WILL try to kill you. A classic aspect of Australian life. The game is still in early access so there’s more to come, but it’s a real treat so far.

rafting

rafting is so much fun when played with friends. However, if you’d like a truly isolating survival experience, playing alone can give the game an entirely different vibe.

In rafting, you must survive the cruel seas by building a raft, gathering debris from the ocean to build your raft up, avoiding getting eaten by sharks, and trying not to starve. Speaking on not starving…

Don’t Starve Together

survival games
Image: Klei Entertainment

[Link]

Yo sees it Don’t Starve Together. Playing this game with friends was some of the most multiplayer fun I’ve ever had. i mean, don’t starve is a classic for sure, but the decision to make this unforgiving survival game multiplayer was a very wise one.

Don’t Starve Together is a great example of a game that was already fantastic on release, but then continued to slay as the years went by. The game came out all the way back in 2016 and is STILL having content added to this day.

Sorry for yet another segway, but speaking of games that came out in 2016 that got better over time…

No Man’s Sky

5 Games From The Steam Survival Fest To Avoid Dying In
Image: Hello Games

[Link]

No Man’s Sky is an example of a game that aged like fine vintage wine thanks to the tireless work of Hello Games. Anybody revisiting this game will tell you the same thing: No Man’s Sky is not the same game as it was when it came out in 2016.

As we know, No Man’s Sky is a space-based exploration survival game. On release, it was… not great. What it came down to was a case of big dreams being poorly executed. Thankfully, the past 6 years have been kind to this one, as the state of it is now fantastic. If there’s any game you should definitely revisit, it’s No Man’s Sky.

grounded

survival games
Image: Xbox Game Studios

[Link]

grounded rocks. I love to be the same size as bugs.

While grounded is still currently in early access, it will be released in full on September 27th. Think of Subnautica except you are very small in a garden, so the truly scary beasties are Giant Fucking Spiders. If Honey, I Shrunk The Kids were a video game.

This is another one that is a fantastic multiplayer experience, so I’d absolutely recommend playing with friends. get-on grounded!

Quantum makes off-market bid for SA graphite play

Quantum Graphite has made a play for fellow SA graphite developer and explorer Lincoln Minerals. Under the off-market bid, Quantum is offering one of its shares for every 40 Lincoln shares based on the two-day weighted average price for Quantum shares of 40.67 cents. The offer represents a 30 per cent premium to Lincoln’s most recent share price of 1.02 cents.

Lincoln’s South Australian tenure totals about 1177 square kilometers on the Eyre Peninsula, which is shaping up as Australia’s world-class flake graphite province.

Quantum has its sights firmly set on the prospective landholding that houses the high-grade Kookaburra Gully graphite deposit. In 2013, Lincoln released a maiden JORC mineral resource estimate coming in at 2.2Mt grading a spectacular15.5 per cent total graphitic carbon, or “TGC”.

As an additional sweetener, the tenure includes the historic Koppio Graphite mine containing a JORC inferred mineral resource of 1.85Mt at 9.76 per cent TGC.

Quantum’s South Australia operation, about 40km south along the Eyre Peninsula, takes in the Uley 2 and Uley 3 resources where a hefty 7.2 million tonnes going 10.5 per cent TGC has been defined.

According to Quantum, the addition of Lincoln’s flake graphite assets to its arsenal delivers a greater economy of scale from their joint development.

Not surprisingly, the Kookaburra Gully graphite deposit exhibits many similar key characteristics as that of the broader geology of Quantum’s Uley deposits.

Importantly, the metallurgical properties of the Kookaburra Gully graphite deposit match those of the Uley deposits, posing clear synergies for the preferred processing path for each of the projects.

Quantum is looking to develop thermal energy storage battery cells utilizing graphite from its Uley deposit on the Eyre Peninsula through a joint venture with Sunlands.

The duo says the high-purity natural flake graphite found at Uley is important for Sunlands’ downstream processing and technologies required to develop thermal energy storage, or “TES” cells. TES cells are devices that temporarily store energy to be used for power generation later. They can be used to balance fluctuating energy demand caused by the changeable nature of renewable energy generation.

Additionally, natural flake graphite is an important component of lithium-ion batteries. Quantum previously reported during the next 18 months demand for natural flake graphite could increase from about 30 to more than 50 per cent of the anode market share and by 2025 the material will be the dominant force in the sector – moving above the now in-vogue synthetic versions.

The Eyre Peninsula is part of the highly endowed Gawler Craton mineral province that hosts the world-class Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carapateena copper mines along with a bevy of iron ore mines in the infamous “Iron Triangle” of the Middleback Ranges.

Lincoln’s Gum Flat Project, only 2km from Quantum’s Uley project, hosts a plethora of iron-rich magnetite and hematite-goethite deposits with a combined JORC mineral resource of 109Mt.

Despite its proximity to the Uley deposits, limited exploration has been done at Gum Flat for graphite. Resampling conducted by Lincoln on previous drilling targeting iron ore mineralization returned a suite of encouraging results including 13m at 12 per cent TGC from only 57m down hole.

Whilst Quantum will have its hands full assessing Lincoln’s graphite assets, the tenure also hosts a compelling suite of intriguing gold, zinc-lead-silver, copper, manganese, uranium and vanadium prospects all worthy of a second glance.

Quantum already has its foot on plenty of graphite at its Uley deposits in South Australia’s world-class flake-graphite province. If Lincoln’s shareholders accept Quantum’s offer, it could be a game changer for the evolving graphite developer.

When You Can Watch The Splatoon 3 Direct In Australian Times

Splatoon 3 will get its own Nintendo Direct broadcast this week and, as always, we’ve got the details on when and where to catch it in Australian times.

Similar to the Pokemon Direct last week, this next Nintendo Direct broadcast will focus on Splatoon 3 entirely and will run for around 30 minutes. Though Nintendo is currently staying tight-lipped about the contents of the show, it has said fans can expect fresh squid news and updates.

Splatoon 3 is the latest in Nintendo’s series of third-person multiplayer shooters, a genre few could have seen Nintendo wading into a decade ago. Since its launch on the Wii U in 2015, splatoon has become one of Nintendo’s most popular new IPs. Its unique paintball-inspired take on territory control has won it legions of fans and opened the door to younger players as well. It’s a very Nintendo take on the multiplayer shooter, turning the genre on its ear to center teamwork over violence, without losing the competitive edge that keeps players coming back. Remove the balancing act.

Splatoon 3 will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on September 9, 2022.
