Here’s what Sony, Ubisoft, WB, Riot and others think of Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal

We’re over six months on from Microsoft announcing plans to acquire Activision Blizzard, kicking off the lengthy process of gaining approvals from anti-trust organizations across the world. Most of the time, these investigations are highly secretive, but we do know that they involve seeking opinions from competing companies across the industry. Now thanks to recent filings in Brazil, documents containing these opinions have been posted online, giving us insight into what the likes of Sony, Ubisoft, WB and others think of the deal.

Recently, Brazil’s administration has been seeking feedback on the deal and posted documents online, giving us a look at what major publishers across the industry think of the impending merger. The list of companies included includes major rival console, Sony, as well as game publishers like Ubisoft, WB and Riot Games. Tech companies with an interest in the gaming market, like Google and Apple, were also contacted. Resetera user, Idas, discovered the filings on Brazil’s government website, and while much of the documents contain redacted information, we do get a good idea of where the industry stands on the deal.

Sony naturally has the most to say, as it competes with Microsoft on both the console hardware front and the software front. As we all know, great software can give a hardware platform an advantage over another. Sony points out that while it is possible for almost anyone to make and release a game nowadays, there are just a handful of developers capable of producing AAA titles. Sony also adds that it would be very difficult for another company to create a franchise to rival Call of Duty and that the IP is powerful enough to influence a consumer’s console choice.

Sony also estimates that Xbox Game Pass has captured up to 70 percent of the global subscription services market, and that it would take several years and a lot of investment to create a true competitor. There are concerns that the lower cost of a subscription will lead to upfront sales for games and will create a difficult competitive environment for developers who choose to release their game for an upfront fee, rather than packing it in a subscription.

WB, which has been toying with the idea of selling off its gaming division, is of the opinion that the industry has plenty of competition and adds that the industry does not have a high barrier for entry for developers to release software. Ubisoft is in a similar boat, saying that there are alternatives to Activision Blizzard games and putting forward the opinion that there is plenty of competition in the industry.

Riot Games and Bandai Namco also both responded with answers that suggest both companies believe there are alternatives to Activision Blizzard titles and lots of competition across the market.

The major tech companies, like Apple, Amazon, Meta and Google did not respond with much and most of their answers were redacted. Ultimately, none of them seem to have any interest in stopping the acquisition and acknowledge the distinction between the mobile games market and console/PC. However, Apple does seem to think that Apple Arcade is a competitor in the wider gaming market.

KitGuru Says: It doesn’t sound like there is much opposition to the acquisition amongst established publishers. Still, regulators like the FTC and the European Commission may have concerns and still need to finalize their own investigations into the acquisition.

Disney’s New Free-To-Play Racer Wants To Be Distinct From Mario Kart With “Combat Racing”

Disney Speedstorm Mickey Mouse
Image: Gameloft

Gameloft’s free-to-play racing game Disney Speedstorm has already been compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe numerous times. With its character-focused racing and themed tracks, it was inevitable — especially on the Switch! But, in an interview with Nintendo Everything, the developer is keen to set out what makes this title stand out from Nintendo’s juggernaut kart racer.

While Mario Kart 8 has different types of karts, stats, and even racer weights, Disney Speedstorm will have four different classes. When asked about what makes this game “stand out”, Gameloft Barcelona’s game manager — Aska Suzuki — put forward this unique element first:

“In Disney Speedstorm, characters aren’t just broken up by general types. We’ve given them one of four classes: Speedster, Brawler, Trickster, and Defender to support the strong combat racing element to this game. Boost management is really important , and each class builds extra boost in different ways, such as a brawler gaining more boost through stunning other racers, or a speedster gaining extra boost by going across boost pads. This provides the opportunity for very strategic racing if players wish to race that way .”

The class doesn’t just change how the character races, but it also affects how you get extra boosts, which adds an extra layer of strategy to the game! It sounds like a really interesting difference, especially with the focus on “combat” and confrontation. So we’ll be racing against all of our least-favorite Disney characters so we can justify ramming into them on the race track, then!

But that’s not the only unique element. Suzuki went on to explain what other differences classes bring to the table:

“Additionally, individual characters don’t just have special abilities, but they are pre-loaded with specific power-ups, so a trickster character will be more inclined to get items that negatively impact other racers, or a defender might get more defensive items On top of that, each power-up can be charged in order to perform a different action! More than any other racing game I can think of, character choice in Disney Speedstorm is closer to picking a character in a MOBA game.”

This element of the game is similar to Mario Kart Double Dash!!, but instead of just having unique abilities, they’re also more likely to get items that fit their playstyles. What items and skills these are, we don’t know yet, but it looks like character selection will be going beyond simply picking your favorite Disney and Pixar character.

Of course, Disney Speedstorm is a live service game with seasonal content, and Suzuki outlined a few things that will be added to the game once it’s out:

“…players will have access to regular new content via updates and season passes. New Disney and Pixar racers will be added regularly to Disney Speedstorm, bringing special skills for you to master (or overcome) and unique tracks to pump fresh strategy into the mix. Support crew characters, environments, customization options, and collectibles will also drop in regularly, so there’s always more to experience.”

This is certainly something that sets the game apart from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which many might be worried about. However, despite there being special events and Season Passes, Suzuki reiterated that “all characters can be unlocked through gameplay”, while also finding items to help level up their chosen character.

There will be specific events focused on a single Disney or Pixar film, or other ones focused on certain characters. So Gameloft is planning to go all out on the game.

Disney Speedstorm is due out sometime this summer. We’ll let you know as soon as we have an official release date. Have you decided on whether you’ll be downloading the game? Do you think the combat racing elements will make this one stand out? Let us know down below!

5 Great Features You Only Get in Samsung’s Version of Android

While the device care utilities will always be running in the background to look out for problems, you can also tap the Optimize Now button to perform a manual optimization—very handy if you think there might be a few issues with your smartphone.

The optimization process includes looking for duplicate or large files on your device that might be taking up room unnecessarily, for example, or hunting down apps that are draining battery power, or closing down apps running in the background unnecessarily.

Customize the Always-On Display

Samsung phones give you more control than most over what’s shown on your lock screen, and how it’s shown, too. From Settings, head to lock screen and Always On Display to configure it—though note that some budget Samsung handsets don’t offer the feature.

You’ll see that you’ve got all sorts of settings to play around with. You can, for instance, choose how long the always-on display stays visible for and pick your preferred clock style from a variety of digital and analog options.

Other available settings let you switch between portrait and landscape orientation and choose how bright the text is on the lock screen. It’s also up to you whether or not the media playback controls are shown via the always-on display.

You can even download entire themes for the always-on display: Tap Themes from Settings, then pick ODA to see what’s on offer. The quality can vary, but you should find at least a few options that suit your tastes.

Put Items in a Secure Folder

If you own a mid-range or flagship Samsung smartphone then you have access to a Secure Folder: a specially protected area of your device where you can store any kind of file you want that no one else has access to.

Accessing the Secure Folder on your Samsung phone requires extra authentication—a fingerprint, a PIN code, or a pattern—and all the data inside it is fully encrypted, which means it’s almost impossible for it to be hacked.

From Settings, choose Biometrics and security and then Secure Folder. Once you’ve set your authentication method and brought up the Secure Folder, you can add new files and apps to it by tapping on the + (plus) button.

You can also add files to the Secure Folder from several other apps on your handset. In the Gallery app, for example, you can select photos and videos and then tap More and Move to Secure Folder.

Samsung DeX lets you use your phone like a desktop PC.

Courtesy of Samsung

Run Samsung DeX

Samsung DeX is a way of operating your smartphone with a keyboard, mouse, and computer monitor. If you’ve got a lot of image editing or word processing to do on your phone, for example, then it can be useful.

What you’re essentially doing is turning Android and OneUI into a desktop operating system, with all the benefits that brings—floating windows, more intuitive control of your apps, keyboard shortcuts, and so on.

You need some specific hardware: This only works with a Galaxy S series phone, and you need a specific DeX cable from Samsung to connect it to your monitor and your peripherals. You can also plug it into a laptop or desktop computer and use the peripherals attached to that instead.

Samsung has a full guide to DeX that you can consult, but it’s not difficult to get up and running and should seriously increase your mobile productivity—both in what you can do on your phone and how quickly you can get it done.

Intel confirms 14th Gen Meteor Lake has ‘Versatile Processing Unit’ for AI/Deep Learning applications

Versatile Processing Unit for deep learning and AI inference

Intel is adding VPU to Meteor Lake and newer.

A new commit to Linux VPU driver today confirms that the company has plans to introduce a new processing unit into consumer 14th Gen Core processors, a Versatile Processing Unit.

The VPU driver is included into the Linux Direct Rendering Manager (DRM), the same way their graphics driver is integrated. The VPU appears 6 years after Intel acquired a company called Movidius, which has been developing their own VPUs. It is not entirely clear if and how Intel plans to incorporate Movidius designs into Meteor Lake, it could be a full-blown SoC-like integration or just a copy of architecture bits needed for Meteor Lake. Obviously after so many years, VPU design should be much more complex.

The confirmation on VPU comes from Kerner.org patches, where the following description is added:

Intel VPU for Meteor Lake, Source: kernel.org

Thus, Intel confirms the new VPU has five components, including CPU to VPU integration unit, memory management, RISC controller, network on chip and the most important part, the Neural Compute Subsystem (NCS) doing the actual work. This VPU unit could be considered Intel’s alternative to NVIDIA’s Tensor Cores, a dedicated chip that is heavily focused on AI algorithms.

Intel Meteor Lake is now officially coming next year, eventually it should become available for mobile and desktop platforms packed with new hybrid architecture featuring Redwood Cove and Crestmont CPU cores and Intel’s newest Xe-LPG graphics architecture.

‘I’m doing puzzles that may take 10 years to solve’: Animal Well, a mysterious video game time capsule | Games

Yon January 2020, players of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time stumbled on a buried spaceship: a fully functional “Arwing” fighter from another classic Nintendo game, Star Fox 64. The Arwing was added as a programmer’s shortcut to, essentially, teach a dragon how to fly. Once the dragon was airborne, the ship was hidden away in Ocarina of Time’s source code, where hackers unearthed it 22 years later.

“It’s amazing to me that it was there all this time – it just took a lot of digging to find it,” says Billy Basso, a game developer from Chicago. “It’s completely inessential, but it helps people bond with how games are made, the creators behind them and the time and place. It connects you to history in a way.” Basso hopes to foster similar connections with Animal Well, an eerie pixel-art cave system which its creator hopes will have plenty of secrets left to uncover a decade from now.

In Animal Well you play a squishy emoji-style critter in a world of “ambiguously hostile” larger organisms that range from giant ghost dogs to extremely creepy flamingos. There are no level-ups or traditional weapons, as in a horror game such as Resident Evil, “you never feel able to dominate your environment.” Rather, progress is about using deceptively homely cartoon objects such as Frisbees and yo-yos to interact with other animals and avoid becoming their dinner.

While Animal Well’s winding subterranean geography recalls Metroid, interactions with creatures riff on the whimsical item puzzles of point-and-click adventures such as Monkey Island, albeit with several different solutions per puzzle. Some are fairly obvious: dogs go well with Frisbees, for instance. Others, Basso hopes, will take years to unravel. Animal Well is a single-player game, but players may still need to collaborate, even if it’s only by trading theories on forums and social media. Basso also plans to encrypt the source code so that players can’t hack out the secrets, as they did with Ocarina of Time.

This obfuscation isn’t just for the sake of challenge. Animal Well is a quiet protest about the dismal state of video game preservation in an online age, aimed especially at live service games that are playable only as long as publishers keep the servers running. “Even with the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation, I’m running into issues logging into those accounts, downloading games or patching them,” says Basso. “It’s already an issue, and it’s going to be so much worse for the generation following that.”

Animal Well, by contrast, is built to last. “If I’m doing puzzles that maybe take 10 years to solve, I want the game to be playable 10 years from now.” The game doesn’t rely on third-party tools such as Unity that may lose compatibility over time, and Basso may ultimately host it himself rather than leaving it at the mercy of a digital store such as Steam. Animal Well is also designed to run more independently of your PC’s operating system or configuration than other games, to get around compatibility issues.

Basso plans to release Animal Well in a finished state, with no updates or downloadable extras to boost sales after launch. Like games from before the broadband revolution, he wants it to feel “like this physical artifact that already has everything hidden in plain sight”.

Where Ocarina of Time’s fossilized Arwing was an accident of circumstances, Animal Well is a deliberate time capsule, a refuge for its creator’s daydreams and nightmares that invites further discussion about the video game community’s struggle to safeguard its own history. It’s a fascinating project, and a poignant one. “The world will change around the game, and the way it interacts with the game will change,” Basso comments. “But the game itself won’t.”

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GPU could take on the RTX 3090 Ti

A new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GPU leak has rolled up to the rumor station, and the upcoming RTX 4000 card could keep up with the RTX 3090 Ti. The souped-up AD104 will allegedly rock better VRAM and a CUDA core bump compared to the ordinary RTX 4070, but it’ll also demand more from your gaming PC PSU.

According to reliable leaker Kopite7kimi, the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti will “easily match RTX 3090 Ti.” In terms of on-paper specs, the graphics card will apparently feature a “full-fat AD104” GPU armed with 7680 CUDA cores. It’ll also potentially pack 12GB GDDR6X VRAM – an improvement over previously RTX 4070 memory capability predictions.

Of course, with great power comes a greater thirst for power supply juice, as the RTX 4070 Ti could guzzle as much as 400W. In other words, the full-fat AD104 might be a bit too much for your mid-range gaming PC build, especially if your PSU already has its hands full powering your gaming CPU.

Just like with all RTX 4000 rumours, it’s best to take these new RTX 4070 Ti whispers with a grain of salt. Predicted specs for the green team’s next best graphics cards are continually evolving, and the lineup isn’t set in stone. It may also take a while for the next-gen GPU to show up, as rumblings suggest only the RTX 4090 will release this year.

An RTX 3090 Ti punch

Rtx 4070 Ti: Nvidia CEO holding RTX 3090

That said, most rumors suggest the RTX 4090, RTX 4080, and RTX 4070 will show up in the next few months, and there’s already talk of an RTX 4090 Ti. Whether the latter card will actually become a thing remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say that Nvidia isn’t playing around when it comes to next-gen performance.

The RTX 4090 range is set to enter the ring alongside AMD RDNA 3 GPUs, with both options setting the gaming PC bar ever higher. Yet, team red’s contenders seemingly sap less power than Lovelace, which could help give them an edge.

Intel is technically also a horse in the next-gen race, even if it’s trailing behind both Nvidia and AMD. Leaks point toward yet another Intel Arc delay, and the company’s plan to release a new graphics card every year up to 2025 might not come to fruition after all.

5 Totally Real Games I’d Like To See On PlayStation Plus Extra

There are many games in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe catalogue.

So many games, in fact, it’s hard to know where to start. But what if it’s not enough? What if there were several notable snubs that would sadden and disgust me were they not added to the catalogue? huh? What about that?

With how these game services work, we’ll continue to see more titles added to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalogue. Perhaps we will one day see a time where every single game ever made is available to play on the LeapFrog LeapPad Ultimate Bundle Kids Safe Learning Tablet.

However, there are a few games that are definitely real (because I’ve played every one of them from start to finish, for sure) that I would like to see make their way to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalogue. Please take a look.

The Last Minion

5 Totally Real Games I'd Like To See In The PlayStation Plus Games Catalog
Image: Ruby Innes / Kotaku Australia

This is easily one of the best psychological horror games ever made.

The Last Minion is an indie game developed by Gru himself in his self-made engine GRUnity, and he said that it came to him in a dream where the Minions turned against him and tried to eat him alive. Of course, Gru still loves his Minions, but this game was a passion project he had to make.

Set in the aftermath of the Great Minion Massacre, you play as Gru hunting down the final Minion, a troublesome beastie called Grenjamin that refuses to die and loves eating Gru-based individuals.

The graphics are insane. I really felt like I was Gru, and I honestly had fear in my heart for this horrible creature. Este needs to be in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalogue.

Bunty Goes To Gynecology School

5 Totally Real Games I'd Like To See In The PlayStation Plus Games Catalog
Image: Ruby Innes / Kotaku Australia

This is hands down the best Bunty game in the Bunty series.

Bunty Goes To Gynecology School is a comedic action-adventure, puzzle platformer, and educational simulator game developed by iconic studio The BedWetters. It is the 14th game in the Bunty series and a sequel to the cult-classic Bunty Makes A Genuine Italian Lasagne. The most recent game in the series was 2021’s Bunty Is In The Army Now And He’s Bloodthirsty.

The game revolves around the big man himself, Bunty, as he learns all about what it takes to be a gynecologist. The greatest part of this game is not only its sense of humor but also the fact that you have all the knowledge and qualifications required to become a professional gynecologist upon completion.

Este needs to be in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalog as it’s the best one. easily.

Oochie Ouchie Footsie Ouch 2: Foot Hurty Owie Ow

playstation plus extra deluxe
Image: Ruby Innes / Kotaku Australia

Oochie Ouchie Footsie Ouch 2: Foot Hurty Owie Ow is the superior sequel to the admittedly rough Oochie Ouchie Footsie Ouch.

Oochie Ouchie Footsie Ouch 2: Foot Hurty Owie Ow was made by indie studio Damn, That’s Gotta Hurt Interactive. You play as a foot as you go through many levels that require you to hop on horrifically painful things like Legos and thumbtacks. The first game felt like a demo, but this one feels real.

What sets this game apart is the heartfelt story of the foot. We learn that one day, the foot accidentally fell off the elusive ‘Some Guy’ when he fell asleep waiting for a Diet Coke and Hot Fudge Sundae at the Ouchland McDonalds at 2:00 am after a night getting gunked up at the Yeowch Hotel. The journey the foot has to go through, which involves stepping on many painful things, echoes our everyday struggles and pains as a society.

If this doesn’t hit the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalog soon, I don’t know what I’ll do with myself or even my own foot.

Constipation: The Beginning

playstation plus extra deluxe
Image: Ruby Innes / Kotaku Australia

Constipation: The Beginning is one of my favorite games of all time.

Constipation: The Beginning is the prequel title of the constipation series, which has seen critical acclaim from the video games industry and the medical industry alike. It was developed by sole developer Dr Greeble Gunts, a proctologist that started making the constipation games to educate the masses about the dangers of constipation.

What I love most about this game is that the character customization is easily one of the most advanced I’ve seen in a video game. You can make the playable character look exactly like you, and Dr Gunts did this so players would feel truly immersed in the painful experience of constipation.

I hope the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalog includes this game soon, so more people can learn what to do when you are constipated.

Playstation Worm (Remaster)

playstation plus extra deluxe
Image: Ruby Innes / Kotaku Australia

I can’t understand why playstation worm never got any sequels or remasters.

playstation worm was PlayStation’s answer to nintendogs, and was a PlayStation exclusive. Similar to nintendogs, you have a special friend that you must raise, walk, feed, and train for competitions. However, the big difference is that your special friend is a giant 12-meter-long worm that speaks to you and asks you to do things.

The worm has a man’s face and is very kind to you if you treat it right. However, it will ask you to do unspeakable things — horrible, terrible acts of evil. At first, you’re disgusted at the thought, but then you sit back and think about whether you would do these things for your family dog, who you deeply care for. It changes things a lot.

Not only do I need to see this game on the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalogue, but it needs to be remastered.

How about you, then? What game do you want to see in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe games catalogue? Let us know!

The straightener features two heat sensors, one across each styling plate, and offers up to 20 minutes of styling. It comes with a USB-C charging cable so it can be charged on a plane, in a car, or on your laptop. It’s pre-set to an optimum temperature of 365°F, allowing the ceramic-coated plates to easily glide through the types without snagging for a slick finish.

Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator Travel Size by dermalogica: A travel light exfoliant, the rice-based powder activates when it comes into contact with water, releasing papain, salicylic acid and rice enzymes that polish the skin. It’ll also brighten and even out the skin tone thanks to the phytic acid from rice bran, white tea and licorice, while the oatmeal and allantoin soothe and reduce redness.
