How Do Optus’ New Phone Plans Stack Up?

At Gizmodo, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you’ll like it too. We have affiliate and advertising partnerships, which means we may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page. BTW – prices are accurate and items in stock at the time of posting.

Optus has refreshed its postpaid mobile phone plans, upping both prices and data allowances.

Optus’ SIM-only postpaid phone plans previously started at $45 per month with 20GB, but you’re now looking at $49 per month with 30GB. The $55 per month plan with 80GB is now $59 per month with 100GB. $65 per month previously got you 200GB, which has now become $69 per month with 220GB. And lastly, the $85 per month plan with 240GB is now an $89 per month plan with 360GB.

In addition, Optus has rejigged its Optus Plus Promo plan. It still comes with 500GB, but you’re now looking at $69 per month for your first six months, and $119 per month thereafter. This offer runs until August 4.

So how do these new plans compare to Telstra and Vodafone? Before we start, here’s the new core range of Optus SIM-only plans:

No contract SIM-only plans

Despite Optus’ plans now costing $4 per month more across the board, Telstra is still the most expensive option on a SIM-only plan.

Vodafone has the cheapest SIM-only plan out of the three, offering 40GB of data for $40 per month. On the other hand, you’re looking at $49 per month for 30GB on Optus, or $58 per month for 40GB on Telstra.

Stepping up, Vodafone gets you your best data for dollar option: you’ll pay $60 per month for 300GB. For comparison, Optus charges $59 for 100GB, or Telstra $68 for 180GB.

If you go over your allowance, all three providers offer unlimited data at capped speeds. On Telstra and Optus, you’ll get restricted to 1.5Mbps. Vodafone plan capped speeds vary between 2Mbps and 10Mbps, depending on how much your monthly spend is. The more expensive your bill, the faster your capped speeds are. Vodafone also has a truly unlimited plan currently available for $65 per month.

Optus plans with a phone

All telcos now sell phones the same way: you pick from one of their SIM-only plans, and then add on a handset. You’ll then pay it off over 12, 24 or 36 months, interest-free, at an overall cost that’s roughly equivalent to the outright price. Telstra doesn’t consistently offer 36-month repayments, but Optus and Vodafone do.

The similarity between how all three telcos now sell phones means pricing is a lot more predictable: you’re just taking the outright price of the phone and tacking it onto your chosen plan. However, a few other factors can alter this equation. We’ve seen telcos apply discounts to the outright price of a phone to make them a little cheaper, for example.

Here’s a look at how the cheapest options from the Big Three providers compare for some of the latest devices:

iPhone 13 (128GB)

iPhone 13 Pro (128GB)

Samsung Galaxy S22 (128GB)

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (128GB)

Google Pixel 6a plans (128GB)

Google Pixel 6 Pro (128GB)

OPPO Find X5 Pro (256GB)

International calls

Optus postpaid plans worth at least $59 per month (excluding handset repayments) include unlimited talk and text to 35 countries.

For comparison, Telstra’s Upfront mobile plans include unlimited SMS and MMS to all international numbers and 30 minutes of calls to any standard international number. If you want to make more than 30 minutes of international calls in a month, you’ll need to add on a $10 per month International Calling Pack.

Lastly, Vodafone postpaid plans start to get international calling inclusions from the $45 per month and up mark. These are typically broken down into Zone 1 and Zone 2 destinations. For example, Vodafone’s $50 per month plan includes 1,000 minutes to Zone 1 destinations and 100 minutes to Zone 2. All Vodafone postpaid plans include unlimited standard international SMS.

Additional features

On top of talk, text and data, plans from the Big Three all include a couple of extras.

Optus customers don’t have as many extras as they used to. While Optus Sport used to be a free inclusion on all Optus postpaid plans, Optus customers now get a discounted rate. Instead of paying $24.99 per month, you’ll pay $6.99 per month if you’ve got a postpaid mobile plan with Optus. Optus customers also get discounted tickets through Hoyts.

Telstra plans to get you discounted movie tickets from Event Cinemas and data-free access to Apple Music. You’ll need to join Telstra Plus if you want cheap movie tickets, however.

Joining Telstra Plus also earns 10 points for every dollar you spend on your monthly bill as part of a Frequent Flyer style rewards scheme. You can spend these points on selected gadgets or use the points discounts on devices. Telstra Plus is free to join.

Telstra customers are also currently eligible for a one-month free trial of Foxtel Now and a one-month free trial of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Vodafone doesn’t have much in terms of extras, but if you’ve got multiple postpaid plans on the same Vodafone account, you’ll save 5 per cent on your total bill for each plan after the first, up to a maximum of 20 per cent This includes SIM-only, mobile, tablet, and mobile broadband. Vodafone mobile customers can also get a discount on Vodafone 4G home internet, 5G home internet, and NBN plans.

What are my other options?

If you’re looking for a cheaper plan on the Optus network, these plans with at least 40GB start at $20 per month. The standout offer comes from Circles.Life where you can pay $25 per month for 50GB with the promo code FREEZE50. This pricing lasts for the life of your plan.

Work on the 296 GT3 project began in 2020, with the first CFD simulations and simulator models.

Testing then moved into the wind tunnel to further define the car’s aerodynamics.

Following Maranello’s endurance testing, the first on-track shakedown came in April 2022.

Here Are 6 Smartwatch Alternatives if You Don’t Want an Apple Watch

At Gizmodo, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you’ll like it too. We have affiliate and advertising partnerships, which means we may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page. BTW – prices are accurate and items in stock at the time of posting.

You’ve got to give it to Apple, they know how to keep you locked into the family. While they have fostered a loyal fanbase of iPhone users, those who have yet to convert are less likely to thanks to the brand’s aggressive exclusivity. Yes, we’re referring to the fact that the Apple Watch is only compatible with an iPhone.

So, if you need some smartwatch alternatives – because we can’t all just trade-up to an iPhone when we think we want an Apple Watch – then you’ve come to the right place.

From FitBit to Garmin, we’ve rounded up a few Apple alternatives that will more than scratch that smartwatch itch.

This article has been updated since its original publication.

FitBit Versa 3

The fitbit versa 3 is a great smartwatch alternative
Image: FitBit

When you think FitBit you probably think “fitness tracker”, and while its smartwatch offerings do indeed include plenty of exercise tracking options, the Versa 3 is more than just a simple step counter.

It features a 1.59-inch AMOLED display, a range of color choices and it’s also water resistant to 50m for all those swimmers out there. It’ll take voice control via Amazon’s Alexa and can store music or control your Spotify playlists with ease.

If fitness is a key part of your smartwatch ambitions, this would be a cheap and alternative choice to the Apple Watch.

You can read Gizmodo’s full review of the Fitbit Versa 3 here.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4

Samsung’s been in the smartwatch game longer than Apple, but it doesn’t limit its smartwatches to only working with its own-brand phones, with broad compatibility across all of its watches to date.

The Galaxy Watch4 integrates LTE into the mix so you can use it standalone or paired with a handset of your choice. It features Samsung’s newer digital bezel for extra control, and Samsung’s long history in the smartwatch space means that there are a wide array of apps that you can install to it – and an even wider array of watch faces too.

Check out Gizmodo’s review of the Galaxy Watch4 here.

Fossil Gen 6 Smartwatch

6 of the Best Smartwatches That Weren't Made by Apple
Image: Fossil

Fossil’s smartwatches combine the flexibility of Google’s WearOS with the style of traditional watches, which isn’t always a given when you’re talking about wearable computing.

The Gen 6 models are water resistant, with support for NFC payments thanks to GPay and in-built GPS, as well as the expected heart rate tracking and fitness monitoring features. If you’re after a smartwatch that doesn’t make it apparent you’re wearing anything but a classic watch, it’s a solid option.

Where to buy: Amazon ($499) | eBay ($499) | The ICONIC ($499)

Garmin Venu 2 Plus

Lots of people want smartwatches for even more nuanced fitness tracking, and that’s precisely the market that Garmin chases with its Venu range. The Venu 2 Plus features a 1.3-inch circular always-on display, multi-sport tracking, enhanced heart rate and onboard oxygen saturation detection, as well as sleep tracking features.

Looks-wise, it’s so light on your wrist that you’ll almost forget it’s there. In fact, this alternative to the Apple Watch is also a firm choice if you don’t want to feel a persistent buzzing on your wrist aka you’re just sensitive to vibration. It offers very little disturbance to your everyday adventures, while ensuring it still doesn’t miss a beat.

Full NVIDIA RTX 40 “AD104” GPU with 7680 cores and 400W TDP to match RTX 3090 Ti in performance

Please note that this post is tagged as a rumor.

Potential RTX 4070 Ti could match RTX 3090 Ti in terms of performance

The rumored specs for RTX 4070 with 7168 CUDA cores and 10GB memory on a 160-bit bus may seem underwhelming to some GPU enthusiasts. But such configuration is already capable of competing with NVIDIA’s high-end RTX 3090 GPU in 3DMark TimeSpy, at least that’s according to hardware leaker Kopite7kimi. However, the limited bandwidth may still become a bottleneck in some instances.

As it turns out, NVIDIA is already preparing a full variant of AD104 GPU, featuring 7680 cores and 12GB memory across a 192-bit memory bus. Such configuration would allegedly provide matching performance to the RTX 3090 Ti, the flagship Ampere desktop GPU which debuted in March this year. With a wider memory bus and faster memory, such a variant would have 40% higher memory bandwidth (360 → 504 GB/s) than RTX 4070.

More cores and faster memory would come at a cost of higher power consumption. It is said that PG141/SKU331 power draw reaches 400W, so 100W higher than RTX 4070’s (300W). It is too early to put a name on this configuration, but if RTX 3070 Ti with full GA104 GPU was any lesson for us – this should be the RTX 4070 Ti.

Thus far seven different RTX 40/ADA configurations were mentioned by Kopite7kimi and other leakers. This is the latest list with updated specs:

As Sony PS5 Sales Struggle To Get Traction Price Rises Tipped – channelnews

Sony who was fined $3.5M by the Federal Court at the start of COVID for making false and misleading representations on its websites re PlayStation warranties is now looking to jack up the price of their PS5 console that is under pressure from mobile and PC gaming.

At this stage, the Japanese Company has refused to rule out a PS5 price increases however insiders are saying “Price increases are coming” as the business struggles with inflation issues.

Recently the company was questioned about whether the hard-to-get console could be harder to afford in the months to come with the Company appearing to favor supply to their own direct sell web sites over retailers such as JB Hi Fi and EB Games.

Credit: TechUnwrapped

Sony has confirmed that they sold 21.7 million PS5 consoles since the product was launched, including 2.4 million in the three months leading up to June 30.

That quarter included 47.1 million PlayStation games, 79% of which were direct sell sales that did not go to the retailers who helped build the brand around the world before Sony moved to direct sell.

In Australia Sony earlier this year removed reference to retailers from their Australian web site.

Sony’s executive deputy president and chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki has refused to deny price rises are coming.

Sony recently revealed there was “a much lower level of engagement” than it had anticipated, meaning gamers are playing less than they were a year ago (via Game Developer).

Talking about supply issues Sony management said “There were two big constraints that we were imposed with. One was the parts and components availability; the other was the supply chain. With the parts and components availability there are a lot of improvements so we are very hopeful, quite optimistic about that.

“For supply chain disruption, we actually took quite a hit in the first quarter. In the first quarter, hardware volume for sales were quite smaller than we expected at the beginning of the year, so supply chain disruption is something that we hope will be completely addressed.”

Pixel August update looks to have been delayed

In most cases, Google rolls out the latest Android security patch to Pixel phones on the first Monday of every month. That did not occur this morning, and it looks like the August Pixel update has been delayed.

According to the “Pixel Update Bulletin — August 2022” published this morning at the normal time, Google will be releasing a Pixel update featuring Android 12 and the August security patch level. We don’t think the Pixel this month is getting Android 13, which is more likely pegged for a September launch.

For Google devices, security patch levels of 2022-08-05 or later address all issues in this bulletin and all issues in the August 2022 Android Security Bulletin.

Google lists 40 CVEs across “Kernel components” and “Pixel” that are addressed by the 2022-08-05 patch level. Vulnerabilities range from moderate to critical and cover components like the kernel, modem, and camera.

However, this update was obviously postponed as OTA images did not arrive at 10 am PT. Additional evidence of a delay comes from Verizon, which published details about an unexpected update for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

The US carrier says a new update with the July 2022 security patch level was released today. The SQ3A.220705.003.A3 build number is very similar to last month’s for Verizon, which was “A1.” Google has not yet released the factory or OTA images for manual install, while the carrier did not list updates for any other Pixel.

One possible scenario for this delay might be that Google discovered a last-minute issue that warranted pulling the August security patch. However, there was still something important that required an update and thus the July stopgap emerged.

Meanwhile, Google did release the global/unlocked and AT&T/Verizon (on the June security patch) builds for the Pixel 6a this afternoon, while the Android 13 Beta Program now supports the new mid-ranger.

Google’s August 2022 Pixel update is on its way

The latest security patches should be hitting your Pixel phone soon

Right now, Android fans everywhere are atwitter with expectation for the imminent release of Android 13. But before that gets here, Google’s latest monthly updates for Pixel phones looks like they should be landing right on schedule, bringing security patches to the current Pixel lineup.

Last month may have seen Google push back its update distribution briefly in light of the Independence Day holiday, but the company is wasting no time in August, announcing its updates right as we kick the month off.

ANDROID POLICE VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Pixel 4 and newer handsets are set to receive this new release, which as we’d only expect contains a host of security patches. None jump out as particularly noteworthy, but we’re still waiting for Google to publish its Pixel Community announcement post, which may shed some additional light on the update’s contents. Similarly, we’re still waiting for Google to actually distribute the files needed to install this update, and as we publish, the company’s repositories of OTA updates and factory images still have July as their most recent release (June in the case of the Pixel 6a).

That doesn’t give us much to go on for the moment, but we’ll be sure to update this post with details of Google’s Community announcement and news about those downloads as soon as either becomes available.

V-MODA’s Crossfade 3 Wireless Headphones Sound Superb And Look So Cool

Chic Italian headphone brand V-MODA has released its latest pair of Bluetooth headphones in the form of the new Crossfade 3 Wireless. These headphones are V-MODA’s flagship model in the Crossfade series and look superb.

Crossfade 3 Wireless headphones have the classic V-MODA signature sound but also feature new audio refinements that the company says can deliver the most immersive club experience ever. The Crossfade 3 can go almost anywhere thanks to a battery life of up to 30 hours from a single charge. There’s also support for Qualcomm’s aptX HD audio codec and the AAC codec favored by Apple for iOS devices.

While the wireless sound of these headphones is impeccable, it’s also possible to listen to the Crossfade 3 using a cable connection for even higher-resolution audio. Using the supplied audio cable, the Crossfade 3 can cover a frequency range from 5Hz to 40,000Hz. In addition, the headphones have been officially certified as suitable for hi-res Audio by the Japan Audio Society. To my knowledge, the Crossfade 3 have one of the widest frequency ranges I’ve ever seen quoted for a pair of wired headphones and probably far wider than most of us humans can hear.

Regarding their looks, the V-MODA Crossfade 3 headphones are available in three new finishes. They feature a subtle tweak of the classic V-MODA design with enhancements that give the Crossfade 3 a slightly more contemporary look.

The Crossfade 3 Wireless deliver the classic V-MODA sound signature that’s favored by many DJs and fans of club music. The latest tuning provides a bit more punch and impact. The upper mid-range sounds more evident than on the previous generation of Crossfadses; there’s a smoother definition in the treble frequencies. Altogether, it’s a pleasing sound that can suit a wide range of musical genres. For my ears, the Crossfade 3 now have a more detailed soundstage than the V-MODA S-80 headphones I reviewed last month.

The impactful sound of the Crossfade 3 is due to V-MODA’s use of dual-diaphragm 50mm drivers and some carefully tuned materials, plus a construction method that gives the Crossfade 3 a more immersive sound. As a result, there is plenty of club energy on offer here, plus the excitement of deep and well-defined bass.

With up to 30 hours of battery life from a single charge, the Crossfade 3 Wireless have enough stamina for a couple of weeks of commuting. They offer double the listening time available using the previous generation Crossfade model. With USB-C charging connectivity, these headphones can also be topped up using the latest generation of USB phone chargers.

Perhaps the most striking feel about the Crossfade 3 Wireless is their incredibly lightweight and compact size. These headphones feel much lighter than their 315g, largely thanks to a generously padded and flexible headband plus the plump ear cushions that completely cover the wearer’s ears. The Crossfade 3 feels so comfortable to wear, even for long listening sessions.

Users can fold down the Crossfade 3 thanks to V-MODA’s patented CliqFold hinge. They can be safely stored away in the supplied hard-shell carrying case that protects the headphones no matter where the user goes. As you’d expect with wireless headphones, the Crossfade 3 also includes built-in microphones for making phone calls, taking part in video conferences or for issuing commands to voice assistants. The sound quality picked up by the microphones is good and there’s also some effective noise canceling when making calls.

To customize the headphones there’s the V-MODA smartphone app, which is available for iOS and Android devices. The app can be used to personalize the wireless sound of the headphones by adjusting the overall EQ response.

As well as sounding great, the Crossfade 3 Wireless also look superb, thanks to the tweaking of the original V-MODA design and the choice of three new colorways. The Crossfade 3 are available in Matte Black, Gunmetal Black or Bronze Black finishes. Customizable ear-cup shields can be added to promote a brand or stamp the headphones with their owner’s personality by using unique artwork available through V-MODA’s color printing and laser engraving service.

Verdict: The V-MODA Crossfade 3 headphones sound stunning with their brilliantly balanced tone featuring plenty of energy and punch. They also look amazing and can be customized even further with the removable ear-cup shields. I love how the headphones fold down into such a small size and can be safely tucked away in the supplied zippered hard case. The sound over Bluetooth is exemplary, but using the provided audio cable, the Crossfade 3 can sound even better thanks to the 50mm drivers and a super-wide frequency response of 5Hz to 40,000Hz over wires. Whether you’re out clubbing, commuting, or listening to a high-end audio system at home, the V-MODA Crossfade 3 are a superb pair of earphones and are well priced for the sound quality on offer.
