Wayward Strand announces dazzling Australian and international cast

Wayward Strand, the narrative adventure game developed by Melbourne-based studio Ghost Pattern, has announced the hefty Australian cast bringing its characters to life. They include the likes of Michael Caton (The Castle), Jenny Seedsman (Blue Heelers), and Anne Charleston (neighbors), among many others.

Set on a floating hospital in an alternate-reality 1970s Australia, the VISCREEN-funded game follows teenage protagonist Casey as she discovers more about the hospital’s inhabitants and story. The environment works like clockwork – inhabitants move and events occur whether Casey is there to witness them or not – meaning that you can choose to have Casey follow particular characters and narrative threads of your own accord.

frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen>

The fourteen-year-old Casey is played by Nancy Curtis, who recorded over 1,200 pages of dialogue, according to Ghost Pattern. Curtis is joined by a veteran roster of Australian actors, including: Anne Charleston (Best known as Madge from neighbors) who plays Ida Vaughan; Michael Catton (The Castle, The Sullivans, Last Cab to Darwin), who plays the ‘loquacious’ Neil Avery; and Jenny Seedsman (Neighbors, Blue Heelers, State Coroner) who plays the stern Ruth Beaumaris.

Joining them is Bunurong man Shane Clayton, who Ghost Pattern says brought ‘warmth and heart’ to the character of Ted Muir; prominent Austrian and German actor Erhard Hartman, who plays Heinrich Pruess; and Australian director Michela Ledwidgewho acts as Esther Fitzgerald (pictured above).

Additional roles will be played by theater actor and anthropology scholar Josiah Lulham ace hospital director Felix Pettigrew; John Barrett as Devin the cook; actor, producer, and horticulturalist Harriet Wallace Mead as nurse Lily Marshall; actor and healthcare worker peter paltros as nurse Joe Tagliabue; and Jennifer Vuletic as Dr Margo Bouchard.

Finally, the character of Dr Celene Shen is played by Renée Lim, who is both a practicing actor and a practicing doctor.

Voiceover work was recorded at Original Score in Melbourne, ZigZag Post in Sydney, Innenhof in Vienna and Voiceover Soho in London.

Despite this hefty cast announcement, Ghost Pattern teased that even more characters – and the actors behind them – were yet to be revealed, kept as a secret until Wayward Strand’s possible release.

Wayward Strand will be available on 15 September 2022 on PC via Steam, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Apple drops mask requirements for most of its corporate workers

RIYADH: Digital platforms have changed people’s lives across every area from work to play, and travel is no exception. Online and social media have changed how people discover destinations and deals, how they book their travel, and even how they share their travel experiences.

In Saudi Arabia, for instance, residents start dreaming about traveling 10 weeks before their journey, with video and digital platforms inspiring 50 percent of their choice of destination, according to Fahad Almaghrabi, head of business partnerships at Global Business Solutions for TikTok in Saudi Arabia .

More than 70 percent of people look at TikTok for discovering travel ideas, while 64 percent book a trip after getting inspired by TikTok content, he added.

Arab News spoke to Almaghrabi to learn more about the role the short-form video platform plays in travel.

Tell us more about travelers today and how they have changed in the last decade

Over the past two decades, digital platforms have transformed how we live our lives, permeating every sphere of activity, and shaping how we interact with each other and the world around us.

This generation of “always-in market” travelers — dreaming, considering, or booking a getaway throughout the year — have also developed a penchant for a real and authentic travel experience, and that’s why they love going to their community for trustworthy travel inspiration.

Today’s intrepid travelers are just as keen to share their compelling stories and authentic visuals of journeys on entertainment platforms like TikTok, rounding off a creative cycle that in turn inspires countless others.

A study by Amp Agency found that 84 percent of millennials and 73 percent of non-millennials today were highly likely to plan a trip based on someone else’s vacation photos or videos or social media status updates.

How does this affect the way tourism destinations market themselves?

These authentic vignettes have re-ignited the demand for travel and significantly altered how destinations are being marketed globally, with travel and tourism marketers increasingly leveraging the opportunity presented by this new breed of digital platforms.

What role does TikTok play in this space?

This is a journey in which TikTok has taken the global lead as a disruptive platform with undeniable potential and momentum — and the Gulf and Middle East markets are no exception.

But TikTok’s success in becoming the platform of choice for travelers and in shaping digital travel and tourism trends across the industry is not happening.

Travel and tourism is a key segment of interest for a global and expansive hyper-engaged community of more than 1.8 billion users that straddles all markets and is growing at an astounding rate. This provides the perfect backdrop for TikTok to emerge as a platform where the community is primed not only to consume, but also to express themselves and tell their stories through authentic, visual, and geo-tagged content that is at once enticing and liberating.

This is enabled by easy-to-use editing tools, native content on the platform, and creators that fuel dynamic content.

This powerful combination of the medium and the message amplifies TikTok’s power as a creative platform and enables it to be the internet’s repertoire of travel & tourism inspiration.

TikTok is that intimate, accessible, and inspirational window through which travelers take a trip before deciding if it’s worth it — the trip before the trip.

Can you give us some examples of how TikTok has influenced travel decisions?

While TikTok continues to induce FOMO in would-be travelers with content highlighting some of the world’s most beautiful and established destinations, there are also plenty of examples of TikTok’s effectiveness in driving a surge of interest to hitherto unknown destinations, which led to a dramatic rise. in tourist footfalls overnight.

At least 83 percent of Saudi residents have either gone or plan to go on an international trip in the next six months with Egypt, UAE, and Turkey being the top short-haul and France and Germany being the top long-haul destinations.

More significantly, 74 percent of users were found to look for travel discoveries on TikTok and 73 percent were found to have impulse purchased their trip in a short span of time.

What does this mean for brands?

With such lucrative figures at their disposal, brands can natively integrate into major travel conversations and leverage the community to speak with them, about them, and for them.

In essence, this represents a paradigm shift in the typical acquisition process for travel and tourism operators to stand out within an increasingly saturated ecosystem and collapse the sales funnel to move travelers directly from the “inspiration” phase to the “booking” phase.

Whether it’s the assortment of clever hacks, unadulterated advice, safety tips or the sheer visual appeal of short-format videos, the power of TikTok in shaping and inspiring the Kingdom’s travel trends is an opportunity that could become a model for authentic and organic tourism in the years to eat.

Can you share some examples of how TikTok has increased the visibility of a tourist destination?

In a year of restricted travel, the UAE launched the “World’s Coolest Winter” campaign to highlight all the amazing sights and activities the Emirates has to offer.

INSERT WORLD’S COOLEST WINTER IMAGE

For the campaign to realize its full potential on TikTok, the ‘7’ was created, using one of TikTok’s recognizable hand gestures that looks like the number 7 in Arabic and symbolizes the seven emirates at the same time. The ‘7’ became a visual prompt that rallied residents to share their favorite hidden gems through a branded hashtag challenge.

The UAE’s top 20 creators kicked it off, including @khalidandsalama, @_m7md, @azlife.ae, @bayan.dxb, and @dxbxd – and the rest of the nation’s TikTokers soon followed.

The campaign took on a life of its own with 8,700 user-generated videos in just six days, creating a library of the UAE’s best-hidden spots and secrets available for all to explore.

The ‘7’ sign became a symbol of UAE pride, and the campaign delivered remarkable results, with a 25 percent jump in brand awareness, 85 percent increase in ad recognition, 89 percent boost in ad likeability, and over 70 million views. The campaign successfully got an entire nation smiling and moving at a time they needed it most.

Further west, TikTok was also used by Switzerland Tourism, the national marketing organization, to hype up the incredible country.

INSERT SWITZERLAND TOURISM IMAGE

Switzerland Tourism spent the first six months of its business account building its following entirely organically, focusing on a test-and-learn strategy, to thoroughly understand how TikTok works.

As their established community responded well to its hashtags, #INeedSwitzerland, and #inLOVEwithSWITZERLAND, ads were a natural next step because paid campaigns would mean it could directly target a different demographic to learn more about them.

Doubling down on its popular hashtag #INeedSwitzerland, Switzerland Tourism ran its first ever TopView ad showing a three-way split screen of dramatic scenery and nature. Spurred on by this campaign’s success, it then ran three more seasonal TopView campaigns: A summer experience tips ad, a summer in the city ad, and a funny autumn-themed ad.

In just 12 months, Switzerland Tourism has driven huge momentum on TikTok, with over 700,000 likes across all its posts and a whopping 35.5 million hashtag mentions. Most of this was organic, with some videos going viral without so much as a penny behind them.

Its TopView campaigns have achieved average engagement rates of 20 percent, which is remarkably high and shows the power of a brand putting out brilliant content on TikTok.

Paul Stephens AutoArt 993R brings subtly to the Porsche 911 restomod

There’s a new Porsche 911 restomod in town. UK-based Porsche specialist company Paul Stephens on Tuesday unveiled the AutoArt 993R, a new restomod built from the 993-generation 911.

While some restomods feature extensive modifications, a Paul Stephens press release said the company took a “less is more” approach to this car. The original customer’s request was to improve the 993 Carrera 2 base car by 25% in every area.

For the flat-6 engine, that meant enlarging displacement from the stock 3.6 liters to 3.8 liters, and adding new internals, including a crankshaft from a 997 911 GT3. The result is 330 hp (a 360-hp option is also available) and 265 lb-ft of torque, which is routed to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine originally made 270 hp.

Weight was also reduced from the stock 3,020 lb to 2,689 lb (with fluids), giving the 993R a power-to-weight ratio comparable to a 996 911 GT3, according to the company, though it hasn’t released performance figures.

To help reduce weight, Paul Stephens deleted the stock sunroof and rear wiper mechanism, and swapped the stock front hood for an aluminum version, the latter saving a claimed 17 lb. A composite engine cover and new front and rear bumpers save a claimed 17 lb and 19.8 lb, respectively.

The weight-reduction effort continued with the interior. Paul Stephens removed numerous components, including the center console, glovebox, audio system, power windows, central locking, and airbag. The air conditioning and stock seats were replaced with lighter-weight versions, and a roll cage was fitted.

Stopping power is provided by the calipers and steel rotors from a 993-generation 911 RS. Since the 993R is primarily a road car, carbon-ceramic brakes were considered unnecessary, according to the company. The car also features five-way adjustable suspension and 996 GT3 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

If you like what you see, Paul Stephens is accepting orders for other 993R builds at an undisclosed price. The company also works on earlier air-cooled 911 models, including the 964.

Paul Stephens isn’t the only company specializing in Porsche 911 restomods. California-based Gunther Werks is already well known for 993 restomods, while Singer does high-end builds based on the older 964 generation.

Discord update will bring parity between Android, iOS, and PC versions

A new Discord experience is coming to Android and this isn’t going to be your typical update. Instead, the app will get a complete revamp, with hopes from the development team to improve the experience and finally bring parity between Discord on various platforms.

According to the team at Discord, going forward, the Android app will longer be on the back burner when it comes to updates. In the past, Android updates lagged behind iOS and PC updates, resulting in a compromised experience. Now, the team has committed to updating all platforms at once and offering the same features across all supported devices. That means the experience that you have on Android, will be the same on iOS, and also PC.

The teams switch to using React Native for development means that things will be much smoother and faster on the back-end. The switch to React Native framework is what will allow the team to push updates to all platforms at once. Of course, each version of Discord will retain its own unique and required UI elements, but the team will try to bring the apps more in line with each other when it comes to design. Although each version of the app might look similar on initial setup, it can be customized to the user’s liking.

While this looks like good news for all parties involved, it does appear that people testing the new Android version are having various issues. Checking out the Reddit Discord, there are complaints of the new app being slow, buggy, and so forth. Luckily, a majority of those in the thread are using an alpha build. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved when the app comes to Android users in the coming weeks. If you’re a Discord user using Android, be on the look out. If you’ve never used it before, take a look and download it at the link below. Discord is also available on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and coming soon to Xbox.

Discord won’t treat its Android app like an afterthought anymore

React Native developers are winning, though

Discord might be best known as an advanced IRC for gamers and the Perpetually Online, but it’s got a mass appeal with over 100 million Android downloads. While the app has an excellent rating on the Play Store, one common concern is the late arrival of new features when compared to the iOS or desktop clients. However, that’s set to change soon, as the Discord Android app is getting an under-the-hood overhaul.

ANDROID POLICE VIDEO OF THE DAY

Discord has announced on its official blog that the Android app is being rewritten in React Native. The iOS version of Discord has been on React Native since 2015, while the desktop version uses React and Electron in its framework. This means that new features and updates will roll out nearly simultaneously across all three platforms and Android users won’t be waiting around for new features iPhone owners get to have. Additionally, the design and UI elements are expected to be more aligned across the three versions. New Android users will notice a larger font size when they install the app for the first time, whereas existing users will be able to toggle the font size in their app’s settings. The payoffs are about as obvious as what’s leading to them: a reduced codebase means developers are able to push out updates faster.

However, some users are highly concerned about the changes. Those who had enrolled in beta testing for the revamped app have mentioned that it is slow to run. Additionally, a few developers who have worked with React Native claim that it tends to be littered with bugs. That said, numerous popular apps including Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft Office, and the Xbox Game Pass use the language (so says React Native) and if those companies can make okay-functioning Android apps with it, then why not Discord?

The updated Android app for Discord has already started rolling out and will arrive globally within a few weeks.

Fire Emblem Fans Should Give This Steam Hit A Try

There’s been a raft of intriguing strategy RPGs this year, but one of my favorites so far is Symphony of War. It’s been climbing the charts on Steam in recent months, and for good reason. From a distance it looks like another Fire Emblem knockoff. Up close it’s doing enough interesting things to stand on its own, and I really recommend you give it a shot.

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga quietly came out on Steam in June and has been racking up positive reviews ever since. Developed by an indie team called Dancing Dragon Games with a history of RPG Maker projects, it’s a trope-filled military drama about civil war and demonic threats. But you can pretty much ignore all that. Beneath the predictable plot and airbrushed character portraits is a deep strategy game that’s hard to put down. Personally, I think it’s even better in the strategy department than Triangle Strategy.

Make no mistake: Symphony of War is old-school. While newer entries in the Fire Emblem series have delved deeper into visual novel elements and relationship mechanics, it’s focused almost exclusively on renewing the nuts and bolts of classic grid-based battles. What works so well is that Symphony of War nails the basics and also adds plenty of new wrinkles for fans to dig into (especially those who also dug last year’s Dark Deity).

Gif: Dancing Dragon Games / KotakuGif: Dancing Dragon Games / Kotaku

The biggest one is that each individual unit represents an entire squad made up multiple types of fighters. Maybe there are some knights in front flanked by pikemen while wizards and archers rain down death from the back. When two units move next to each other and throw down, a mini-turn-based skirmish ensues. Mages in the back cast fireballs and healing spells while knights in the front dish out melee damage. Combat unfolds across two rounds, with attackers getting the first turn and the defending side going second. Some fighters can only attack on the first or second turn, while others will occasionally luck into a bonus turn. The action is easy to follow and yet also opens up plenty of room for customization.

Adding more subtle layers of complexity are unique fighter bonuses and an extensive research tree. Horseback fighters get to attack first without retribution. Infantry provide defensive bonuses to nearby units. And archers can naturally attack from a distance without facing counter-attacks. These and other stats can then be augmented and magnified by researching new tech. Rather than leveling up specific units, you’re growing the overall capabilities of your army.

Screenshot: Dancing Dragon GamesScreenshot: Dancing Dragon Games

in this way Symphony of War forces you to sometimes think like a 4X strategist while playing like a traditional JRPG enthusiast. Instead of customizing one single party and fighting through a dungeon, you’re building up a small army of them and taking on a whole battlefield. Completing missions faster and capturing enemy units and buildings along the way nets you extra money and points that can then be poured back into outfitting your various crews. Just a few novel tweaks and the decades-old tactical JRPG formula feels fresh and modern again in 2022.

A few other games have also taken hybrid approaches to tactical RPGs recently. The Iron Oath and Songs of Conquest both come to mind. The former is a roguelike with battles that take place on a hexagonal grid. The latter also sports a hexagonal battlefield in service of map exploration and city-building closer to a 4X game. They’re really promising games in their own right (and still in Early Access), yet neither is as focused on plumbing the depths of leveraging small advantages so one group of animated sprites can wipe the floor with another.

Symphony of War is far from a perfect package, but it offers one of the more meaty and innovative takes on the tactics RPG formula I’ve come across in years.
