AI asked to show an image of the most closely held secret on Earth

A viral artificial intelligence has been asked to produce an original image of the most closely held secret on Earth.

an artificial intelligence formerly called DALL-E, and currently referred to as Craiyon, has been asked to showcase what it believes to be the most closely held secret on Earth. The artificial intelligence uses the “DALL-E mini” model, which was trained by Boris Dayma and Pedro Cuenca using Google Cloud Servers. The AI is capable of producing original images of whatever a user enters into its text prompt box.

The public can enter any question or phrase they like, and the artificial intelligence will usually spend less than a minute producing a set of images that will show a visual representation of the text entered into the box. While the AI doesn’t hold any predictive value for future events, it still can produce incredibly interesting images based on simple text requests. Try the artificial intelligence for yourself to test your imagination.

Apple won’t repair another 8 Macs after adding them to its vintage list

Apple has added eight new Macs to its ongoing vintage product list, with machines originally released in 2015 and 2016 joining the pile.

Apple adds products to its vintage list once it has been five years since the company last sold them. As a result, it also means that Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers are unlikely to offer service on them, although there may be rare circumstances where spare parts remain available and a repair is possible.

Twitter may let you add images, GIFs, and videos to a single tweet

Twitter supports various media file formats that can be added to a tweet to make one’s views more expressive. It has limited users to one media file format per tweet so far but that appears set to change in the near future. As reported by TechCrunchTwitter has begun a new test where select users are able to share images, videos, and GIFs within a single tweet.

We first heard about the feature earlier this year when Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a), a well-known app researcher, tweeted a few screenshots showing it in action. Twitter has now officially acknowledged the existence of the feature and said that it is currently under testing with a few randomly selected users.

The official statement from the company reads,

“We’re testing a new feature with select accounts for a limited time that will allow people to mix up to four media assets into a single tweet, regardless of format. We’re seeing people have more visual conversations on Twitter and are using images , GIFS and videos to make these conversations more exciting. With this test we’re hoping to learn how people combine these different media formats to express themselves more creatively on Twitter beyond 280 characters.”

Paluzzi showed that users will be able to add images, videos, and GIFs to a single tweet the same way as they are able to add multiple files of a single media format. It means these will appear as a carousel and users will be able to tag people in photos and videos. They will also be able to rearrange the order in which the files are displayed in the tweet.

As for followers and other users on the platform, they will see these different media file formats in the form of a carousel. They can swipe through the carousel to see other medial files uploaded by the user. Here is a tweet that shows what the new functionality would look like but as of now, you can see all the different media files only on a smartphone app. We can expect the support to arrive on the web soon enough.

The hardest ‘Elden Ring’ boss could have been much harder

Elden Ring‘s hardest boss, Malenia Blade of Miquella, was originally supposed to be harder than she currently is.

Elden Ring dataminers love picking apart FromSoftware’s latest title and have been doing so since its release back in February, but earlier this month, they seemed to have found a much harder version of Malenia in the pre-patch 1.0 build (via pc gamer).

Dataminer kotn3l discovered that the 1.0 version of the boss featured more aggressive mechanics, like pursuing the player in the first phase, and better, more regular blocks from the players’ attacks. She even had a second variation of her signature move.

You can check out the dataminer’s breakdown video below:

Kotn3l uncovered in the 1.0 item descriptions that her ultimate boss ability was originally called “Malenia’s Blade” and she also had a second moving flurry attack that didn’t feature long pauses and didn’t allow her to travel across the arena at long distances. The dataminer believes this to be the original Waterfowl Dance.

Additionally, while in the current Elden Ring build, the player has to take Malenia’s health down to 80 per cent for her to start her initial flurry attacks, in the 1.0 version there isn’t a requirement and she is able to use her two different flurry abilities back-to-back.

Kotn3l explains in their YouTube video that during the beginning of the fight, Malenia “very rarely” follows up her dash with her kick attack. With her de ella more regular blocks and aggressive phase one attacks, she looks way more challenging than her current build de ella and the dataminer seemed to have some trouble catching up with her.

After failing to beat her in the video, it also looks like she doesn’t have any death dialogue either, although kotn3l points out that they may have done something wrong.

In other news, developers at Gamescom Opening Night Live could pay over £71,000 to show their game.

Marvel Snap Removing Nexus Events, Goes Back To The Monetization Drawing Board

Marvel Snap‘s unpopular Nexus Events are officially done and dusted.

Marvel Snap developer Second Dinner will refund all the gold players have spent on the game’s divisive Nexus Events. In addition, all players will receive the Jane Foster base card, previously only available as a Nexus Event reward, regardless of whether they took part in one or not.

Second Dinner removed Nexus Events last week following continued player pushback over the mechanic’s aggressive monetisation. Also, a source of frustration is what players feel is a misrepresentation of the odds involved in pulling high-level rewards. All of the game’s best rewards — including the aforementioned Jane Foster card — were locked behind a meager drop rate, meaning players would have to funnel hundreds of dollars into the game if they wanted to secure big-ticket gear.

Stoking player ire further was a feeling that the game’s marketing did not satisfactorily convey what a Nexus Event was.

The situation was made worse by the studio’s statement, only months ago, that players would be able to accrue “every card in the game over time, without paying anything.”

It feels like Second Dinner should have been seen all of this coming. When you’re telling players that they can eventually get every card for their deck and then only months later keep a powerful card locked behind a paid drop randomiser… yeah, your players are going to get upset.

How Marvel Snap‘s approach to monetization changes after this remains to be seen. Monetization will return because the game has to make money somehow. For now, it’s a game of wait and see.

Second Dinner is the brainchild of former Heartstone game director Ben Brode, who co-founded the studio after departing Blizzard in 2018. Beyond the monetization grips, most players seem to really like the card game within Marvel Snap so far Matches have a fast tempo, and it promotes strats and synergies that tickle the brain in all the ways Heartstone did at its best under Brode.

Marvel Snap is currently in closed beta in Australia on iOS and Android. Second Dinner says the game will eventually make its way to PC too. Beta access is slowly rolling out in various territories ahead of wider release.

Linux Kernel 6.0 is Likely the Next Version Upgrade With Initial Rust Code

You might be aware of the fact that Linus Torvalds used an Apple MacBook hardware to release Linux Kernel 5.19.

But, the news wasn’t limited to one interesting observation.

Linus Torvalds also mentioned at the end of the release announcement that he might call the next version upgrade of Linux Kernel as 6.0.

Linux Version Numbers Decoded: Why 6.0?

So, why the change in version numbers for an upgrade?

To understand the versioning scheme, let us take an example of Linux Kernel 5.18.5 (that’s what I’m running on my system).

If you want to check the Linux Kernel version on your system, simply head to the terminal and type in:

uname -r
  • The first number ‘5’ represents the major version
  • The second number, ’18’ represents the series of minor updates.
  • The third number, ’15,’ represents the patch version

The Linux Kernel usually follows the Semantic Versioning (A versioning system used in open source software).

However, when it comes to major upgrades, the developers seem to avoid numbers that seem too big.

So, instead of going with Linux Kernel 5.20, it will just be Linux Kernel 6.0 (or Linux 6.0). There’s no hard rule on this, only when Linus Torvalds gets worried with the number, we have a shorter version number.

Linus Torvalds mentioned the same for changing the version number in the mailing list:

I’ll likely call it 6.0 since I’m starting to worry about getting confused by big numbers again.

From Linux 5.19 release announcement

New Features Coming to Linux 6.0

If you are curious, here are some features that might be a part of the Linux Kernel 6.0 release:

Samsung launches user self-repair kits for Galaxy Devices

Way back in March, Samsung joined a growing number of hardware makers announcing self-repair initiatives. The list, which includes similar offers from both Apple and Google, finds companies proactively reacting to potential right to repair legislation. Both Samsung and Google teamed up with popular repair site iFixit for their offerings, providing low-cost tools to fix common device issues.

Beginning today, the companies are providing kits to repair broken screens, back glass and charging ports on the Galaxy S20, S21 and Tab S7+ tablet to users in the States. The kits include parts, tools and step-by-step repair instructions, coupled with a return label to send the broken bits back to Samsung. Kits for additional devices and repairs will roll out down the line.

It’s a different approach than Apple’s which finds the company shipping iPhone owners professional-grade equipment, including the same glue-melting machine its Geniuses use in-store. The offering has received negative reviews for inaccessibility and pricing, leading many to suggest that making self-repair difficult is, perhaps, part of the point. The iFixit tools, meanwhile, lower the barrier of entry considerably, but likely lack some of the precision of the pro-level offerings.

I’d say anything that makes repairs more accessible to users — and delays devices’ end of life — is probably a net positive. How many people will actually take them up on that offer is another question entirely.

The kits are available through iFixit and Samsung retail stores.

‘Halo Infinite’s open-world was scaled back before launch

According to 343 Industries, halo-infinite‘s open-world map underwent “significant scaling back” before it was released.

Speaking to the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences on August 1, 343 Industries’ head of creative Joseph Staten revealed that the studio made a lot of changes and cutbacks to halo-infinite‘s map (via TechRadar).

“The team went through a lot of iterations on scope and biome variety before I joined,” Staten said. “Even after I joined the team, we had to make choices about where to scale back.”

Staten added that the team didn’t have the time to create the world they originally envisioned while also delivering on the quality level. I explained that meeting the detail and world depth players expected wasn’t possible and the studio had to make cuts.

“We didn’t end up cutting that much ultimately from the open world, but I know from the original designs there was a pretty significant scaling back of what the team had hoped at one point that they could deliver on,” he continued.

“We knew that we needed to truly deliver a quality experience. [and] scope our ambitions to make sure that the stuff that we did ship met expectations.”

Staten also touched on how the team managed expectations of what an open-world game it would mean to the Halo franchise. “We wanted to free ourselves from a lot of the expectations of open world games, which is why we struggled for a long time in terms of how to talk about it in terms of our marketing promotion because we didn’t want people to get the wrong impression.

“We are like an open world game in as much as our game is a lot more open than it used to be,” he added. “Halo‘s always been a relatively open game in terms of its geometry for a shooter, but for us, we weren’t layering on a whole bunch of systems.”

In other news, a Riot Games developer has pushed back on accusations that he is “completely and purposefully full of it” following criticism of Valorant’It’s new smurf detection feature.

WhatsApp and Facebook security alert issued over malicious Android apps

A top security group has issued a warning to smartphone users running Android over multiple apps that were available on the Google Play Store.

Dr. Web listed over 30 mobile apps that were identified to contain trojans, spyware, adware and other security problems.

The apps related to theme customizations, photo editors and apps that changed the phone’s wallpaper. Alarmingly, an emoji keyboard that had racked up millions of downloads and a note-taking app were found to contain malware.

When the apps were installed, Dr. Web found them to display intrusive advertising within both the apps and notification bar, log identifying information on the user and device, download additional software and even target WhatsApp private messages.

It is also revealed that some of these malicious apps were found to be taking photos and videos without the user’s knowledge, as well as read text messages, track the location of a device, turn on the microphone, read the browser history, and log keystrokes to reveal passwords and other sensitive user information.

‘Hint – Photo Editor’ was found to redirect a user to a fake Facebook login screen which would intercept personal information.

Google has removed most of the affected apps after Dr. Web alerted the tech giant to the issues, however, these apps can still remain on a smartphone even after they are taken off the Google Play Store.

Dr. Web is advising users to check their smartphones for any of these apps, uninstalling and then changing login information to things like banking, streaming and social media accounts. It’s also recommended to run a virus scan from a trusted brand such as Norton.
