While a big deal has been made about someone former PlayStation exclusives coming to the PC—like Horizon and God of War—no deal was made last week whatsoever about a game with a much lower profile, but which I love regardless.
That game is Hohokumwhich was first released on the PlayStation 4 (and PS3, and Vita) in 2014, and which remains one of the most chill video game experiences available. A collaborative work between artist Richard Hogg, developers Honeyslug and the record label Ghostly, Hohokum is to beautiful 2D adventure where you play as a worm…kite…thing that just floats around its various levels, poking around a colorful landscape just to see what happens.
HOHOKUM | Now Available On Steam
It’s magic. I love this game so much that amidst all the hardware drama and blockbuster releases making up our roundup of the last console generation I wrote a whole thing just about this little game, which I described as being—in terms of meeting its ambitions—perfect.
You move a big snake thing around a floating landscape, and sometimes you run into things, and sometimes you fly through things. You’re never fighting, talking, not really doing much of anything.
Yet for Hohokum these aren’t limitations. They’re a canvas.
It’s a game that understands the links between interaction, visuals and soundtrack to a terrifyingly perfect degree. Each is inspired by and reliant on the other two, to the point where once it gets going Hohokum is almost synaesthesic.
one thing Hohokum is now providing to also be is timeless. Eight years on from its original release its art style hasn’t aged a day, and technically looks as though it could have been released yesterday. The heavyweight soundtrack accompanying it also sounds as good in 2022 as it did in 2014, no doubt helped by the fact that many of the artists involved—like Tycho—are still killing it today.
So if you haven’t owned a PlayStation in a while and never got to check this out, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Annapurna has published this PC version (which, admittedly, is probably why less of a fuss was made than if Sony had released it), and it’s out on Steam now.
A new report has revealed that the biggest and best USB-C charger for Apple’s 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models face shipping delays of up to eight weeks when you buy them separately from Apple’s website.
MacRumors (opens in new tab) reports this week that in the US, the estimated shipping time on both the 96W and 140W USB-C power adapters for the MacBook Pro (2021) are shipping at a whopping 6-8 weeks, with some listed to arrive as late as October 3 , meaning you’ll have more luck getting an iPhone 14 before one of these chargers.
As the report notes, shipping delays have plagued the more-powerful adapters for Apple’s best MacBook since launch, with shipping delays of three months seen last year.
charge up
We absolutely loved the MacBook Pro in our review when we got hands-on with it last year thanks to its awesome Liquid Retina XDR display and awesome Apple silicon power.
The MacBook Pro also excels because of its excellent connectivity. It boasts an SD card slot, HDMI, three Thunderbolt 3 connectors, and MagSafe 3, Apple’s latest magnetic and jeopardy-free charger that will break away from your Mac if it’s yanked too hard, saving your MacBook from any potential tumbles.
Depending on the model you buy, you’ll get a 67W or 96W USB-C power adapter in the box, but if you want faster charging still then the 140W version is a separate option. It’s these two latter charges experiencing delays currently.
Apple recommends the 96W model for “fast, efficient charging at home, in the office, or on the go” with the 14-inch model. Using USB-C gets you fast-charging from 0% to 50% in just 30 minutes at the cost of one USB-C port. The 140W model provides the same fast-charging performance with the 16-inch model, although again you’ll need to use a USB-C/Thunderbolt port rather than MagSafe. If you need a spare or replacement 67W charger for your MacBook, these are much easier to get hold of from Apple.
Circulating rumors suggest Apple may update its MacBook Pro with all-new M2 processor options later this year.
Apple has long been rumored to refresh the entry-level iPad this year, with a new model supposedly switching from Lightning to USB-C, as well as featuring a faster chipset. Today some rather rough-looking CAD renders of the upcoming device have leaked through a case maker, and you can see them below.
Unfortunately these don’t clarify the port situation at all, as there’s a red mark on the port hole. The renders show a camera island on the back with one sensor and an LED flash, as well as the front layout from the previous model, with the camera on the top bezel and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded in the Home button in the bottom bezel . Those bezels are still sizeable, despite the rumored switch to a 10.5″ or 10.9″ screen, up from the current 10.2″.
iPad 2022 CAD renders
The new iPad is also said to have the A14 chipset on board, the same one powering the iPhone 12 series, and a newer option than the A13 built into the 2021 version of this tablet. So it’s looking like a pretty safe incremental improvement year for Apple’s cheapest tablet, at least if these renders are accurate.
More iPad 2022 CAD renders
The new device should measure 248.62 x 179.5 x 6.98 mm, which means it’ll be shorter, wider, and slimmer than the current model. It will probably be unveiled in September alongside the new iPhones or at a possible separate event in October. It should launch with the new iPadOS 16 on board, even though the update could get delayed for existing iPads.
Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and other firms are teeing up for a busy second half of the year filled with lots of new gadget launches.
It’s like clockwork. Big tech companies launch the latest products, like phones, watches, or even robots and flying security drones, beginning in August and up through November, to gear up for the holiday shopping rush.
Samsung kicks it off next week, on August 10, when it will announce new folding phones, giving it a chance to attract consumers before Apple holds its iPhone event in September. The new products at Apple’s fall events have a direct impact on the company’s balance sheet. The holiday quarter is typically Apple’s biggest. It reported record revenue last year for the three months ended December 25, for example.
Meanwhile, Google has promised to launch its next phone with a brand new chip, and its first Apple Watch competitor, later this year. And don’t forget Amazon: It typically announces new Echos, Fire TV products and sometimes tosses in a few surprises, like last year’s Astro Robot, at an event held sometime between September and November.
There’s a lot, so here’s a rundown of what to expect.
Samsung
Here’s what to expect: Samsung will debut the next generation of its foldable smartphones — the teasers have confirmed that — including the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
Customers can already reserve one of these new smartphones, even though they haven’t been announced yet. Some of the chief complaints surrounding foldable phones have been the price of the higher-end Galaxy Z Fold model and the obvious seam that interrupts the phone’s display.
Any price drop or upgrades to make the fold less obvious will be noticeable. Samsung typically announces new earbuds, tablets and smartwatches to compete with Apple’s iPad, AirPods and Apple Watch, too.
Here’s what it launched last August: Last year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which was priced at $US1799 ($2600) and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 for $US1000. It also announced the Galaxy Buds 2 headphones and the Galaxy Watch 4.

Here’s what to expect:
Apple’s reportedly planning four iPhone 14 models this year, according to Bloomberg, which said we can expect new features like an always-on display on the higher-end Pro models. The same report said Apple may ditch the 5.4-inch iPhone mini and instead launch a more affordable big-screened iPhone with a 6.7-inch screen. That suggests Apple will launch an iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 with a bigger screen, the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Apple is also set to unveil three new Apple Watch variations, including a new entry-level SE model, a standard Series 8, and a rugged edition aimed at extreme sports, according to Bloomberg. The AirPods Pro earbuds are due for an update, and there’s still talk of Apple’s first mixed reality headset, but those could also come later.
Still, Apple’s mixed reality headset would mark the company’s first major product launch since it unveiled the Apple Watch in 2015. The headset will combine elements of virtual and augmented reality, allowing users to place digital content on top of the real world, according to Bloomberg . Apple has been working hard on VR content, enlisting Jon Favreau to develop video content for its headset, the New York Times said in June.
What it launched last September: Last year at a product event Apple announced a new iPad and iPad mini, the Apple Watch Series 7, the iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Google
While Google doesn’t make much revenue from its hardware business, it will launch its first smartwatch and the Google Pixel 7 as it continues to try to build momentum in the hardware market.
Here’s what to expect: Google has announced gadgets in October for years. Back in May at its I/O event, Google teased what’s on deck. Its newest phone, the Pixel 7 will have a second-generation Tensor processor and a glass design with a new aluminum camera bar. A larger Pixel 7 Pro model will ship with a triple-lens camera. But we don’t know much about what else is new about the phones, like the prices, or what the cameras and new chip are capable of, so expect to hear all about that.
Google also teased its Pixel Watch, the company’s first smartwatch, which will launch later this year. In a tweet on May 11, Google said the watch, “features the best of Google, plus Fitbit health and fitness experiences”. So, expect some sort of software tie-in that provides new fitness and health features.
It’s possible we could see updates to at least one Google Nest product. A recent FCC filing by Google described a product they’re working on as a “wireless device”, with connectivity ports similar to current Nest devices, according to 9to5Google. It hasn’t announced new Nest thermostats or speakers since 2020, so those could be on deck.
What it launched last year: Last August, Google announced new Nest cameras and doorbells. Then, in October, Google unveiled all the details of its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. Those were the first smartphones to run on Google’s Tensor chip instead of Qualcomm’s processor.
amazon
Here’s what to expect: Amazon historically holds its hardware event sometime later in the year, when it announces a slew of gadgets, ranging from new Echos (like last year’s Echo Show 15, pictured above) to glasses with Alexa built-in and more.
The fourth-generation Echo speaker launched in October 2020, so that’s due for an update unless Amazon continues to experiment with new form factors. Likewise, Amazon typically announces updates to its Fire TV products later in the year.
For the past two years, Amazon’s Ring has been teasing the Ring Always Home Cam, a flying drone camera for home security. It still hasn’t launched, so it’s possible we’ll find out when it will hit the market.
Here’s what it launched last year: Amazon had few surprises in store last year, so this year could be just as exciting. Amazon debuted its Astro home robot, which is still only available by invite-only. It also announced its first smart thermostat, the first Amazon-branded TV sets, the Echo Show 15 and a new Halo View fitness tracker.
Facebook

Here’s what to expect: Meta, formerly Facebook, could have a new virtual reality headset on deck.
Bloomberg said in July that Meta is gearing up to announce the Meta Quest Pro virtual reality set later this year. It will reportedly cost more than $US1000 and will have a better screen, improved cameras and support for improved graphics.
Meta’s Quest 2 headset is currently the most popular on the market. As other players enter the race to develop the so-called “metaverse”, Facebook’s parent company will need to continue to advance its hardware to stay in the lead. And it may want to get something out ahead of whatever Apple is planning.
Here’s what it launched last year: Last September Facebook unveiled its updated Portal video-calling devices. It hasn’t released a new version of its Oculus device since September 2020.

Children’s author and TikTok star Emmaline Carroll Southwell has sold the Richmond apartment where she made it big in lockdown.
The mother of three and her family became an internet sensation with the murals they created on their home’s floor while stuck at home.
The fabric scenes featured Harper, 12, Levi, 6, and Violet, 4, traveling everywhere from Sydney Harbour, to Abbey Road, and to a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

She also penned her hit children’s book, Our Family Pledge, at the two-storey abode at 709/8 Howard St, which is under contract for about $1.3m-$1.35m.
“We called it our little pandemic palace, but it was still three kids in a somewhat small place, although it’s pretty large by Richmond standards,” she told Property Confidential.
“Being able to see the city and outside world from the apartment, and feel like you’re still in a place with a pulse, really, really helped.”
The three-bedroom property is next to the Yarra River where Church St becomes Chapel St, with views taking in the neighboring nature and CBD skyline.
Ms Carroll Southwell said lockdown was “little kids and chaos” for her and husband Kenny, and she began the floor murals as a creative person stuck at home and family activity.
“Our little urban oasis has a lot of little stories, so it’s very sad to leave, but it’s definitely the right time for us,” she said.
Whitefox agent Nathan Verwoert said the apartment attracted “a really broad spread” of buyers including young families who “still wanted to be inner city”, with the views a big drawcard.
Ms Carroll Southwell now has more than 600,000 followers on TikTok after downloading it during lockdown. She and her children de ella revealed their family’s “mission statement” by way of a poem on the platform, which became a viral video and then a book deal.

Did you know you can search for an exact word or phrase on Google by putting quotation marks around it? It’s a great way to get specific about something you’re looking for. And on Thursday, Google announced what I think will be a nice improvement: the small snippets underneath a search result link will now be created based on where the quoted term appears on the page.
Google’s blog post about the change has a good image that illustrates how this will work in practice, which I’ve included below. Google googled “google search,” and the two snippets shown in the example both include the bolded phrase “Google Search.”
The Google search results for “google search.”Image: Google
Previously, Google would show you results that included the quoted word or phrase, but the small snippet under a link may not have shown exactly wherethe phrase appeared on a page. In the blog post, Google’s Yonghao Jin explains why that was and why it made the change:
In the past, we didn’t always do this because sometimes the quoted material appears in areas of a document that don’t lend themselves to creating helpful snippets. For example, a word or phrase might appear in the menu item of a page, where you’d navigate to different sections of the site. Creating a snippet around sections like that might not produce an easily readable description.
We’ve heard feedback that people doing quoted searches value seeing where the quoted material occurs on a page, rather than an overall description of the page. Our improvement is designed to help address this.
As noted in the blog post, there are a few caveats about quoted searches. Some text may be hidden in a meta description tag or alt text and not be easily visible on a page, for example, or Google may have crawled a page when it contained a quoted term that has since been removed in an update. And Google “mainly” bolds quoted content in webpage snippets on desktop — bolding won’t work for mobile results.
Warning: As with all our Xenoblade Chronicles 3 guides, the following article contains spoilers.
There are multiple overlapping systems at work within Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s wonderfully strategic combat system. From returning elements such as auto-attacks, positional attacksclass-based tactics like drawing aggro and performing combos that break and topple your foes, to new stuff like that fancy new interlinking shenanigans that sees you morph into powerful killing machines.
On top of all of this we’ve also got Chain Attackswhich can seem a little bit complicated at first glance, so let’s take a quick look at what makes them tick.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Chain Attacks Guide
As you battle opponents in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 you’ll gradually fill up your Chain Attack Gauge, which is located to the right side of your screen during regular battles, as shown in the pic below. When this is ready it’ll start flashing and a quick press of the “+” button will see you enter the game’s Chain Attack state.
Once in a Chain Attack you’ll be presented with a Chain Order screen featuring a handful of different characters, each with their own attack order that can be carried out. Browse through these attack orders and have a look at the bonuses that you’ll receive for successfully completing them. For example, if you were to pick Mio’s “Lightning Quick” orderyour bonus will be the reduction of attacker and healer aggro by 100%, as shown in the Completion Bonus details just under the order selection. Noah’s Brave Assault gives attacks a 100% chance to bypass defenses, and so on.
Successful completion of the order you choose grants you this bonus, and it’s a bonus that will stick for the entire duration of the Chain Attack at hand, stacking with all the others you accumulate. Sweet. Now let’s choose an order, we’re gonna go with Noah because we want that defense-neutralizing bonus, and once we do we’re in the attack proper. Take a look below and you’ll see our available characters in the bottom left of the screen. It’s important to note here that anyone who’s out of commission when you first start a Chain Attack will not be available to use, so think about that when you’re about to kick one off. It’s also important to note that once you use a character that’s them out of the current chain attack, unless they get reactivatedand we’ll have to look at reactivation a little bit later.
But first, let’s look at our available characters as we enter the attack order. Each one has got numbers above their heads, these are Tactical Points (TP). The number above each combatant’s head is the lowest amount of TP that you’ll accrue for choosing to use them in a turn. What do we need to accrue TP for? Well, in the top right you’ve got a TP Gauge and we need to get that TP gauge over the 99% mark in order to successfully complete the order. So, at it’s most basic, our job here is to choose characters who’ll make that number go to 100% and beyond. Once we’re there, we get to sit back and watch a cool animation as your enemy takes a drubbing. The further above 100% you go, the higher your damage multiplier rises in the bottom right of your screen and the more energy we tear off our foe’s health bar.
This is where Chain Attacks now start to fold in lots of lovely layers of strategy as you get used to doing them and start to consider, not just the TP numbers involved or bonus you’ll gain, but what attacks you’re performing and how they affect you both during the Chain Attack and afterwards.
If you choose an attacker, you need to consider what attack to use in order to do as much damage as you can, raising the TP as far above that base number as possible. For example, Noah is starting out with a TP of 30 here so that’s our base, but depending on what attack we use, how many times it hits, its position and type, it’ll add a bunch more TP to that total. This may feel complex starting out but you’ll soon get an idea of what attacks do the big numbers.
Further to this, we need to consider other aspects such as healing and buffs. If your party is in bad shape, low on health, you’ll want to pull off healing attacks in order to get your health back up so you come out of a Chain Attack in good shape. In this way – and this is something you can consider once you’re used to the whole thing – you can save up the use of a Chain Attack in battle just to deploy it when you’re in dire need of healing. Healers can also lower your enemy’s defenses and you can raise your team’s defenses also. Lots of things to consider here beyond the TP gauge just filling up.
Now there are a few other rules that will always apply once you’ve chosen a Chain Order and get started on an attack.
Class-Specific Rules
1. Using a character with the same class as the order – check the symbol on the order itself – will ensure you get bonus TP points for their move. For example, Noah’s Brave Assault order has a red attacking sword symbol on it, so using a character with this symbol will net you bonus points.
two. Attacking characters, if chosen first, will always get a 125% multiplier to their TP at the end of their turn.
3. Support characters, such as healers, can’t make the TP gauge go over 99%so you can’t use them to end a round – unless they’re a special Hero who can bypass this. This might seem annoying, but what you can do here is use support characters to safely get right up to 99% without going over and ending the order. Then you can use a character with a high base TP number and choose an attack that’ll do big damage to watch that gauge rocket upwards.
3. Ending an order with a defender (blue shield icon) will guarantee that you’ll reactivate the character with the current highest base TP for your next round. This means you can build a character’s base TP up over multiple turns to really score some big points and jack that damage multiplier up.
reactivation
We mentioned Reactivation earlier. After each successful order you’ll automatically reactivate a character, so you’re getting one person back to bolster how many attempts you’ve got to complete your next chosen order. As we already said, you can also affect who you reactivate by using a defender character to finish an order, giving you the highest base TP member of your team back for the next round.
Further to this, depending on the TP gauge score you end up with at the end of an order, you’ll get more and more reactivated characters back to play with. Score over 100% and you’ll get one character back. Score over 150, you’ll get two, and anything over 200 nets you three teammates to blast into the next round with.
There are a bunch of other ways to affect reactivation beyond these few parameters, mostly by making sure you’ve got a hero character on your squad, each of whom has a special ability during Chain Attacks. Play around with heroes and remember to choose wisely as you attack in order to max out that gauge and keep the Chain Attack rolling.
Interlink Attacks
Interlink attacks within a Chain Attack can do massive damage and, in order to pull them off, you simply need to complete the Chain Order of two Ouroboros partners. So, for example, complete Lanz’s order and then complete Sena’s order and you’ll find their joint Ouroboros order awaiting you when you return to the order screen. The great thing about these orders, besides all the extra damage they do, is that they reactivate your entire party to join in.
However, these attacks, once performed, will also end your current Chain Attack, so be aware of this if you want to max out your turns. Further to this, you can also actually perform two Interlink attacks by entering a Chain Attack once your Interlink Level hits 3 during normal battleso raise your Interlink Level up by pulling off fusions, combos and so on then hit that Chain Attack Button once you’re ready.
overkill
Overkill. This is very straightforward. If you manage to kill an enemy during a Chain Attack that’s not yet completed, you’ll go into Overkill mode which gives you sweet bonus XP gains. You can see these XP gains as a percentage in the bottom right of the screen just above your damage multiplier. Keep completing orders, up until the max allowed, and you’ll keep racking up the XP bonuses. Simple.
Remember to check the in-game guide if you’re confused by any aspect of Chain Attacks and try out some of the tutorials in order to really get a good understanding of everything and you’ll soon be knocking that TP Gauge up over the 500 % mark like an absolute beast. Good luck!

That menu isn’t a figment of the narrator’s addled imagination; it’s the game’s new cheat menu. If you want to kick your powers up a notch while serpentining around amidst the game’s flurries of bullets, you can type in some cheats to unlock secret characters, ghosts, and relics to give you some respite from the vampiric hordes. If you want to unlock that spinning menu for whatever reason, you can type “spinnn” into the game’s search bar. You’re welcome.

Alongside the new cheat menu, the 0.10.0 patch (also known as the “The Not One” patch) also brings two new achievements, a new arcana, two new characters, and a new weapon to the game. Whether either of the new characters can top the tree remains to be seen:

Enlarge / The cheesy visual multiplying effect applied to this Series S isn’t meant to imply that it’s getting four times the memory boost in this week’s Microsoft GDK update. The actual multiplication amount is impossible to confirm until Microsoft updates its public-facing documents on the matter.

The latest update to the Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK), an official API that targets game development on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, seemed to be set in stone when it was announced in June. Two months later, however, that update has gone live with a surprise bonus that’s so new it hasn’t yet been detailed on the company’s Github repository.
The news instead comes from an official unlisted Microsoft video, first spotted by XboxERA reporter Jesse Norris, which included a tantalizing proclamation. The June GDK is currently live two months after its named month, and it now includes an increased memory allocation exclusively for the lower-priced $299 Xbox Series S console.
This video does not link to specific patch notes or announcements, and as of press time, searches through the publicly shared GDK do not clarify how this memory allocation boost was achieved. Microsoft representatives did not immediately answer Ars’ questions on this update’s technical breakdown.
Getting devs closer to Series S’ 10GB memory total
In the meantime, it’s reasonable to assume that this newly available pool of RAM, which the video’s narrator describes as “hundreds of megabytes,” had been allocated elsewhere on Series S systems up until today’s update—perhaps tied up by OS-level processes ( which previously sucked up roughly 2GB of Series S’ total 10GB pool) that the company has since been able to slash.
Ars’ sources have confirmed what has largely been known by testers and researchers of current-gen consoles: The gap in available RAM between the $499 Xbox Series X (16GB total) and the cheaper Series S (10GB total) has made cross-platform development between the two systems trickier than Microsoft originally advertised. In Microsoft’s best-case scenarios, a Series X game that targets 4K resolutions and incredibly high-resolution textures can downscale all textures for the sake of a 1080p TV screen and otherwise get away with an identical rendering load, mostly thanks to a lot of other architecture being identical between the consoles (particularly the CPU and storage specs).
As more third-party devs have found since getting familiar with the 2-year-old consoles, that’s not how development environment transposal always works. Some developers are still finding that their virtual environments, effects budgets, and lighting scenarios get bottlenecked not only by less total GDDR 6 RAM but also a shrink in its bandwidth, down from the 320-bit bus of Series X to the 128-bit bus of Series S.
Thus, even a tiny jump of, say, 200MB in RAM, or 2.5 percent, could make a significant difference for a developer trying to transpose a certain fidelity level of shadows or ambient occlusion from Series X to Series S. The “hundreds of megabytes ” count could be even higher, anywhere between 512MB and 768MB, though we’re still waiting to hear exactly how much.
Few modern games are a Rift Apart from past-gen consoles
The move comes while both current-gen consoles continue to fall short on some of their biggest technical sales pitches, at least on a software level. Many of the biggest games of the past two years have failed to truly illustrate game-changing features, particularly the near-infinite virtual worlds that might be enabled by a combination of PCI-E 4.0-graded storage and supercharged memory pipelines.
This was exacerbated by a few highly anticipated Sony games rolling back their previous “current-gen exclusive” statuses in favor of cross-gen launches on PS4 and PS5, seemingly to keep game sales while current-gen systems were largely sold out and behind production. schedule. Thus far, we’re largely left with last year’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as a gorgeous demonstration of power exclusive to current-gen consoles.
At least in the case of the Xbox ecosystem, as more current-gen exclusives gear up for their launches, more memory parity between Series X and Series S could help development efforts for 2023 games like Forza Motorsport and Starfield. By the time those games launch, Series S’ default, scant built-in storage count of 512GB could grow, or its proprietary storage expansion cards could come down in price. Either move would increase the weaker, cheaper system’s sales pitch if newer games indeed fulfill the Series S promise of “as powerful as Series X, but for 1080p TVs.”
