Best Samsung Phone in 2022: Which one is right for you?

The Samsung range of phones can be daunting to approach, so let Canstar Blue unpack the best overall, small, and budget phones.

Samsung has worked its way into not just being a competitor of Apple’s iPhone series, but hosting its own viable smartphone range. Since 2009, the Samsung smartphones have been getting stronger, quicker, as well as pulling away from iPhone with their own unique features. So let Canstar Blue run through the best overall, best small, and best budget Samsung Phone to make your decision that much easier.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – the best overall Samsung phone

galaxy-s22

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the current top of the range at the time of writing, and there’s plenty of reasons why.

The 6.8-inch body of the Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and a massive one terabyte. The device comes in Burgundy, Green, Phantom White, and Phantom Black, however thanks to the online exclusives range, the S22 Ultra is also available in Graphite, Sky Blue, and Red.

The 4nm chip is Samsung’s processing weapon, which allows for stunningly clear photos, optimized scrolling, and a smooth gaming experience. The 120Hz adaptive refresh rate helps to keep the glare-resistant display running smooth. Super Fast Charging and Wireless PowerShare mean you can charge your own device incredibly fast, as well as harnessing the ability to give your friends a boost.

The S22 Ultra’s camera shines in the darkness, with an incredibly strong low-light mode. This pairs well with its top-of-the-range zoom feature, as well as a 108MP main sensor.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Plans

The following table shows selected published 24-month plans for the Galaxy S22 on Canstar Blue’s database, listed in order of standard monthly cost, from the lowest to highest and then by data allowance, largest to smallest. Samsung Galaxy S22 – the best small Samsung phone

galaxy-s22Apple is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to the small phone range, given most other brands don’t delve into that market. In terms of Samsung phones, the Galaxy S22 is your best bet at a small phone. It may not be tiny, but it’s smaller than other Samsung phones.

The 6.1-inch screen fits well in an adult hand, with storage capacities of 128GB and 256GB available. Its screen has the same 120Hz adaptive refresh rate that features on the Galaxy S22 Ultra making for smooth and seamless scrolling.

The cameras are certainly a step down from the S22 Ultra, however. A 50MP main sensor is a significant downgrade from the S22 Ultra’s 108MP, while the ultra-wide and telephoto sensors are a nice inclusion. The processing power of the S22 bats above its weight, however the S22 may be a better option if size, or lack thereof, is important to you.

Samsung Galaxy A33 5G – the best budget Samsung phone

a33-5gArguably the most crucial category with the cost of living, the best budget Samsung phone is the Galaxy A33 5G. As its name suggests, the A33 is 5G compatible, ushering in the new era of superfast connection. Its Octa-core processor ensures multi-tasking is a breeze, and 128GB of storage is a major plus, with an extra 1TB possible through its microSD card port.

The A33 5G is also exceptionally water and dust-resistant, meaning its 6.4-inch display can be submerged under one meter of water for 30 minutes and still be operable. The screen takes a slight hit compared to the S22 range, with a 90Hz display refresh.

The four-camera photography system means there’s a lens for every situation, however the quality may not be up to scratch compared to the S22 Ultra or newer iPhones. A 48MP main camera is nothing to turn your nose up at however. On a budget, the A33 5G does incredibly well.

Which Samsung phones are currently available to purchase?

Samsung has a wide range of smartphones available to purchase, which are as follows:

  • Galaxy S22
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
  • Galaxy S22+
  • Galaxy Z Flip3 5G
  • Galaxy 21FE 5G
  • Galaxy A73 5G
  • Galaxy A53 5G
  • Galaxy A33 5G

  • Galaxy A13
  • Galaxy A32
  • Galaxy A22 5G
  • Galaxy Z Fold3 5G
  • Galaxy A52s 5G
  • Galaxy A52

Which Samsung phone should I buy?

Much like many other big purchases, the Samsung phone that’s right for you is dependent on a variety of factors. Setting a budget is important, and valuing what’s crucial to you as a user can save a lot of stress in the future. As always, setting aside time to truly assess what works for you is the most important part in the purchasing process.

Here Are Pokémon Scarlet And Violet’s Exclusives (So Far)

Vulpix or Growlithe? Zangoose or Seviper? Ever since Arceus made the world in its image of him, Pokemon fans have had to grapple with a huge choice: which version to get. That quandary will remain in place for the latest games, pokemon scarlet and violet.

Every generation of Nintendo’s zeitgeisty monster-hunting RPGs splits up its roster of Pokémon, with a handful showing up in one game while remaining absent from the counterpart (and vice versa). This strategy makes a certain degree of sense, if cynically. Pokemon games have always launched as a pair. Making some Pokémon available in one version but not the other potentially incentivizes additional sales. (Nintendo reports sales figures for Pokemon games lumped together.) Or, less cynically, it forces players to actually engage with each other and trade.

pokemon scarlet and violet are not different. We already knew the legendary Pokémon, two motorcycle-inspired dragons called Koraidon and Miraidon, were exclusive to Scarlet and violet respectively. But in the wake of a massive news dump this week, the roster is slowly coming into clarity. Here are the version-exclusive Pokémon known so far, a list we’ll keep updated as more information becomes available in the run-up to the game’s November 18 release on Switch.

pokemon scarlet exclusives

  • Larvitatea rock-ground-type lizard creature who first debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
  • Pupitate, the second-stage evolution of Larvitar. It floats for some reason. Though Pupitar hasn’t been officially confirmed, we’re including it since it evolves from a confirmed Pokémon. (One caveat though: In pokemon sword and ShieldSlowpoke, who has been part of the series since the days of Net and Bluecould not evolve unless you picked up the expansions.)
  • tyrannite, the final stage of Larvitar’s evolution chain. Unlike the prior two evolutions, Tyrannitar drops the ground-type affiliation and is rock-dark-type.
  • stonejournera rock-type from pokemon sword and Shield who, I guess, is supposed to be a play on the famous Stonehenge monument in England.
  • Koraidon, Scarlet‘s legendary Pokemon and cover model.

pokemon violet exclusives

  • Bagona dragon-type Pokémon who debuted in Pokemon
  • Shelgon, the second-stage evolution of Bagon. The same logic that applies to Larvitar’s evolution chain applies to Bagon’s, too.
  • Salamence, a dragon-flying type Pokémon and the final stage of Bagon’s evolution chain. Some people (guilty as charged) are convinced Salamence is the coolest Pokémon of all time, ever.
  • Eiscuean ice-type penguin Pokémon with a giant ice cube for a face.
  • Miraidon, violet‘s legendary Pokemon and cover model.

pokemon scarlet and violet are set to reimagine other long-standing aspects of the series. Set in a region called Paldea, inspired by the IRL Iberian Peninsula, these games are fully open-world for the first time in series history. There’s four-player co-op. Gyms are back, with one leader in particular leaving many fans sexually confused. And in lieu of debatably silly features like “Mega Evolution,” some Pokémon are capable of a thing called — this is a very real word, by the way — “terastallizing,” which means they cover themselves in crystals and can change their type on the fly.

YouTube Is Testing a ‘Zoom’ Feature So Now You Can Watch Cat Vids up Close

YouTube is trialling a feature that will allow users to ‘pinch and zoom’ in on a video, similar to how you can on an Instagram post.

The feature, brought to our attention by 9to5Google, allows ‘premium’ YouTube subscribers to zoom into a video on-screen, even in landscape mode.

As explained by YouTube, to use pinch and zoom, the user can simply “Pinch the video player with two fingers to zoom in and out”.

Rather than filling your screen, pinch to zoom allows you to use two fingers to zoom into the video player. Once zoomed in, as the report explains, you can move around and look at parts of the video closer.

youtube zoom
Image: YouTube

It will be available until September 1 for testing by premium users – a little under a month for the platform to get its ducks in a row and potentially roll it out across its userbase.

If you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber, you can find the new zoom feature by heading to the settings menu (either on your phone or desktop browser). The feature is under the “try new features” section.

YouTube Premium is a solid option if you want to pay to skip through its often harrowing advertising. But it’s $14.99 a month, with a 30-day free trial also available. A student plan will set you back $8.99 a month and a family plan will cost $22.99 a month. With family, you can add up to five users. The price includes access to YouTube Music, offline downloads and background playback.

But for everyone else who doesn’t want those extras, we’ll just have to hope pinch and zoom eventually makes its way down to the free, ad-riddled version of YouTube.

A flat mount disc caliper on a post mount frame? There’s an adapter for that

When it comes to bicycles there are an endless number of component incompatibilities. And anyone attempting to mount a new road-style flat mount disc brake caliper onto an older or less-road-focussed frame (or fork) with post mount tabs will have likely experienced such an issue. In most cases, the simplest answer is to mix mountain bike brake calipers with road levers, but there may be a better option.

Today, bicycle component manufacturer Wolf Tooth has announced an adapter, the sole purpose of which is to let you mount a flat mount brake caliper onto a post mount fork or frame. And it’s a welcomed product given that the latest road and gravel groupsets from Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo are only available with flat mount style calipers. This black anodized machined aluminum adapter is intended to be as simple as it sounds, but there are a few stipulations.

One adapter is required for each brake.

Firstly, the limited clearance available through mixing these two standards means the adapter requires you to add 20 mm to your rotor size. If the post mounts on your frame or fork are native to a 140 mm rotor, then using this adapter will require a 160 mm rotor. If your frame/fork was intended to be a direct fit for a 160mm rotor, then you’ll need a 180mm rotor with this adapter. And so on.

The other stipulation is that you need at least 13 mm of clearance beneath the height of the post mount tabs. Some frame and fork designs will clear this with ease, while others will see the adapter rendered unusable by bottoming out on the frame.

The adapter sits below the line of the post mount. This minimum required clearance may present issues on a small number of frame/fork designs.

On paper, Wolf Tooth’s design doesn’t appear to add anything substantially new to the pre-existing and relatively unknown flat mount adapters from Canadian-based ASSolutions. And while Wolf Tooth just simply offers one adapter, the original creator builds on the idea with several more specific solutions that aim to keep your rotor size unchanged (frame clearance providing).

However, what Wolf Tooth does bring to the table is a more established distribution network that will hopefully mean this compatibility issue will stump fewer people. Wolf Tooth’s appropriately named “Post to Flat Mount Brake Adapter” retails for US$30, while ASSolutions have the original concept at CA$40.

Google Search results emphasize quoted words

In a new update to the Google Search results page, the search engine is now consistently making it clear exactly how words you put in quotes appear on the page.

Many Google searches are handled as a couple of separate words, and the search engine finds relationships between the words to find the best results from across the web. In some cases, Google’s search results would show a snippet chosen by the site, and in others you’ll be shown a relevant preview of the page’s text.

But when you put some of your query into quotation marks, Google makes sure to find those exact words in that precise order. Most of the time, the search results page would also show your quote in its proper context on the page.

Today, Google has announced that its search results page will now always show the quoted words in the context of how they appear. For instance, one previous exception was if the words appeared in the page’s navigation menus or in any other place that wouldn’t make a useful snippet.

In the blog post, the company offers an example of searching for “Google Search” in quotation marks. In the second search result, the phrase “Google Search” appears on the page because it’s used in the alt text of an image on the page. Despite not appearing as standard text on the page, “Google Search” is included in bold in the snippet, along with a nearby sentence to give you an idea of where to look.

Google Search quoted words in results. the words "Google Search" appear in a normal sentence in one result. Those same words appear in an image's alt text in another.

Today’s change was apparently made in response to feedback, with Google Search users wanting to always see exactly where on-page the quote appears. In the long run, it’s a fairly minor tweak, but it could make things easier for some, or at least make it more obvious why a particular page is appearing as a result.

Google updates search result snippets for queries with quotes

Google has updated how search result snippet in Google Search for queries that contain quotes. Now, Google will show where that exact phrase appears on the page in the search result snippet in Google search, the company announced.

What this means. Google explained if you did a search such as [“google search”]the snippet will show where that exact phrase appears:

Previously. Google said previously, Google Search did not always show the quoted search phrase in the Google Search result snippet “because sometimes the quoted material appears in areas of a document that don’t lend themselves to creating helpful snippets,” Google said. “For example, a word or phrase might appear in the menu item of a page, where you’d navigate to different sections of the site. Creating a snippet around sections like that might not produce an easily readable description,” Google added.

Why the change? Google said they made this change based on searcher feedback, Google wrote “We’ve heard feedback that people doing quoted searches value seeing where the quoted material occurs on a page, rather than an overall description of the page. Our improvement is designed to help address this.”

More advice. Google then gave searchers additional advice on how quotes work in Google Search and how this may impact your search results. Check out their blog post over here.

Why we care. Google confirmed with Search Engine Land that this is not a ranking change but rather a user interface change on how Google Search will show some searches, searches that use quotes. This may impact your click-through rate from the Google search results but will have no impact on how you rank for those types of queries.

The importance of pressurized rooms in healthcare

Pressurized rooms have a critical role to play in healthcare environments by protecting both patients and staff from infection and disease.

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has changed the way we interact with each other, how we conduct business and manage staff, how we travel and react to our environment, but most importantly, the way we handle and control it in our daily lives.

Within the medical industry, and in particular hospitals and medical rooms, it has become vitally important to protect patients and keep employees safe from disease and infection. Positive and negative pressure rooms are an essential part of controlling and enabling a safe environment for all.

Positive pressure rooms

Positive pressure rooms maintain a higher pressure inside a treatment area than its surrounding environment. This allows air containing any airborne particles, germs and other contaminants to be filtered out of the room. It also prevents these contaminants in surrounding environments to enter the room. In a medical setting, a ‘protective environment’, which is a positive pressure room, keeps patients within these rooms safe from infections and disease.

Positive pressure rooms are helpful when treating patients with compromised immune systems as any harmful element will essentially be filtered out. Vitro fertilization labs and operating theaters are some of the other settings where positive pressure rooms are required.

Negative pressure rooms

A negative pressure room uses lower air pressure and allows air from outside into the segregated environment, essentially trapping and keeping potentially harmful particles within the room. This is especially important when it comes to protecting those outside from exposure to patients with infectious conditions (AIIR) such as COVID-19.

Both positive and negative pressure rooms are a necessary part of medical and research environments to assist in the prevention and spread of infectious contaminants.

Infection prevention is vital

The importance of infection prevention and control in healthcare settings cannot be overstated. The global Coronavirus pandemic has once again highlighted the need for adequately ventilated and controlled isolation rooms. A neutral pressure room with a positive pressure ventilated lobby creates an environment suitable for managing infectious and immuno-compromised patients. There is no doubt that air pressure stabilizers provide practical solutions and effectively manage the required air pressure differentials.

SL Hygienic ICU doors

The SL Hygienic ICU door from ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is one of those technologies making this happen. At over two meters in width, these ICU doors offer one of the industry’s largest openings that can accommodate any emergency or hospital bed.

In addition to full integration to building control systems, the SL Hygienic ICU 521 door has the option of acoustic glass for soundproofing and passes all AS/NZ standards (4284:2008) for test pressures.

What does this mean?

Testing is important to ensure that the criteria of keeping pressure consistent are maintained, especially in a medical environment. It was required that testing be at suctions of -15 Pa and -30 Pa and a further measurement at -40 Pa was included to permit fitting a regression line for later extrapolation or interpolation. All doors are custom made to fit the purpose of the room and can be used in various industry segments.

In addition to the medical industry, SL Hygienic doors are well suited for laboratory rooms, scientific or isolated type environments as well as any building requiring high efficiency sealing both in a commercial and residential environment.

ChromeOS 104: Dark theme, Launcher, Cal widget

ChromeOS 104 is rolling out starting today with several big interface updates that improve how you use the operating system.

ChromeOS 104 introduce proper dark and light themes that touch every aspect of the user interface. This includes the shelf, app launcher, Files app, and the backgrounds of various settings pages. You can enable the dark theme from the second page of Quick Settings. Google also created wallpapers that “subtly shift from light to dark,” depending on the set theme.

After updating, you’ll notice that the month and day now appear to the left of the time on the shelf. Tapping opens to monthly calendar with the ability to tap a day to see all events, with an additional click opening the Google Calendar PWA. You can see other months and quickly return to “Today.”

This takes up the same size as Quick Settings, while any available alerts appear just above. Notifications from the same sender are now grouped together, while there are bigger touch targets for alert actions.

the redesigned Launcher that’s more compact and does not take up your entire screen is seeing wider availability. Additionally, some might be able to quickly search for Android apps from the Play Store with an inline rating.

Version 104 of ChromeOS introduces a more full-featured Gallery app (with a new purple icon) that can open PDFs with the ability to fill out forms, sign documents, and make text annotations, like highlights.

There’s also a new wallpaper&style application that’s accessed by right-clicking the shelf and selecting the last option. Besides the collections curated by Google, you can set wallpapers from your Google Photos library. There’s the ability to select an album and have a new background appear daily.

This experience also lets you set the device theme (auto-switching available), and Screen saver with three styles available: Slide show, Feel the breeze, and Float on by.
