Chelsea and Tuchel play catch-up with Spurs as transfer links remain | Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel believes Tottenham have a head start on Chelsea in the season’s early weeks and are well placed to capitalize on the comparative stability they have enjoyed this summer.

The teams meet at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in a clash of top-four contenders that has come earlier than Tuchel would have considered ideal. His side of him start as slight favorites given their four wins over Spurs in all competitions in 2021-22 and the fact they finished a league position higher in third. Both won their opening games but Tuchel suggested that Antonio Conte, who returns to face his old employers, has benefited from a pre-season in which the “roads were clear” in preparing for the campaign.

“They took advantage of the situation, which is fair enough,” he said. “Now we try to find solutions to win this game and to be as fast as possible on our highest level. It can also help to have a big match like this early: it lifts you up and gives you a push, which is sometimes needed.”

Asked exactly what he thought Tottenham had capitalized on, he continued: “They took advantage of their situation in that they have a stable club, the ownership was clear, and it was clear that they reached the Champions League and took advantage to reinforce their squad very early. It was very straightforward. They had a calm pre-season. The roads were clear. It seems like they’re a bit ahead of us from the start, out of the blocks, but it does not mean that you win the race just because you win the start.”

Chelsea are still making up ground after the uncertainty that preceded Todd Boehly’s takeover and remain desperate to make additions, particularly in attack and central defence. Tuchel flat-batted questions about the Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana and, while he was happy to expand on his “close relationship” with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from their Borussia Dortmund days, was at pains to distance those comments from suggestions he is close to a meeting with the Barcelona striker. Another Barça player, the midfielder Frenkie de Jong, will not be joining Chelsea despite speculation to the contrary.

“It’s a huge economical wheel and it’s become entertainment,” Tuchel said of the summer transfer window. “This is a very, very popular sport. Unfortunately I have to say it is a bit scary that you get used to these numbers [for transfer fees]. They become normal numbers and that’s a bit scary because they are not normal numbers.

“At the moment there is a value for these kinds of purchases and transfers that the big clubs do, and we are a part of it and want to strengthen our squad. Not everything is 100% reasonable in this.”

Tuchel expanded on some of the readjustments required since the departures of Petr Cech, the technical and performance advisor, and the director Marina Granovskaia. “It’s stolen a bit of free time and sleeping time but it’s shifted,” he said. “We needed to adapt. We were in a delay, given the situation, it was nobody’s fault but changes came within the structure. Everybody needed to step up in terms of responsibility and it is in the end my responsibility to give my opinion on how we build the team for the future and for the next weeks and years.” Of Cech specifically, I have admitted: “We miss him a lot.”

Mateo Kovacic and Marcos Alonso remain the only injury absentees before the meeting with Spurs, who Tuchel believes have shown enough quality to scotch the misgivings Conte voiced soon after taking the job, when he hinted he could leave. “What he felt last season, I believe that he meant it in this moment but I don’t believe it was the truth that there was a huge gulf between us or a huge gap,” he said. “But I’m very sure he also said it to have the road clear. Why should he put pressure on his team? That was his reality of him.”

Meanwhile Newcastle have joined the list of clubs considering a move for Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, who did not feature at Everton last weekend and is also of interest to Borussia Dortmund, Southampton and Leicester.

Max King goal-kicking, St Kilda’s refusal to let Matthew Lloyd help blasted by Wayne Carey

AFL legend Wayne Carey has ripped St Kilda for barring goal-kicking icon Matthew Lloyd from coaching star forward Max King after his wayward showing against Brisbane.

In what was a must-win game for St Kilda, King seemed to be overcome by a horrible case of the yips, kicking 0.5 as the Saints went down by 15 points.

The 22-year-old’s confidence in his set shot kicking appeared to visibly fade throughout the contest, prompting questions over his technique.

While King has enjoyed a breakout season with 47 goals, he has also kicked 41 behinds. His career stats for him so far read 107 goals and 91 behinds through three seasons in the AFL.

King and his twin brother, Ben, share a close relationship with Lloyd, who was their high school coach at Haileybury, but St Kilda has refused to let Lloyd work with their young star. The call from the club is one that continues to leave Carey baffled.

“It’s between his ears,” Carey told Triple M of King’s struggles.

“Sport at the top level is 90 per cent above the shoulders, he has to master his own mind.

“All these guys are willing to help. If Nick Riewoldt, Matty Lloyd’s coming to Max King and the club’s saying, ‘No we don’t want your help’, that’s bordering on stupidity.”

King’s game against the Lions was reminiscent of a game last season against Geelong where he had similar goalkicking issues.

Speaking for 3AW at the time, Lloyd revealed how the Saints star had reached out to him for assistance before the club stepped in.

“Max got in touch with me after the 1.5 game (against Geelong) and I said, ‘I’m willing to do anything we can to get you going’,” Lloyd said last year.

“I actually said to Max, ‘The last thing I’d want is for you to do a hamstring or anything like that having a kick with me, so go and get this ticked off by your footy club’.

“When he went and spoke to them, they said, ‘We prefer to keep it internal’. I’ve got no issues at all, that’s just the decision St Kilda have made.”

Following King’s tough night out against the Lions, Saints coach Brett Ratten suggested he didn’t need help from outside the club, backing the young gun to overcome his kicking issues.

“He’s doing a power of work and what I do know is I want Max King in my corner,” Ratten said.

“He’ll be at our footy club for 10 years and when we look back, we’ll be saying what a great player he is and what he’s done.

“Tonight he had a night where it didn’t work for him. He did everything right bar the finish.

“He’s 22 years of age, we love what he brings to the footy club, and he’s developing, but we know he’s doing the work.

“Sometimes you don’t get the reward all the time, but he’ll keep doing that and, you watch, he’ll turn it around.”

Sharks outclass Tigers

Kade Dykes scored his maiden NRL try in just his second match as Cronulla retained its spot in the top-four with an uncompromising 36-12 win over Wests Tigers at Scully Park in Tamworth.

Dykes is the Sharks’ first third-generation player after his father Adam and grandfather John played for the club.

He played his part in Cronulla’s eighth win in their past nine matches with his 21st-minute try after chasing a kick back on the inside from winger Lachie Miller.

The win also ensured the Sharks leapt over the top of the Melbourne Storm into third place on the ladder as they search for a home final with just three rounds left.

The Sharks continued to show no mercy to the joint-venture club this year after belting them 30-4 in round five.

The Sharks scored four tries in the first half — three off kicks — as they got their attack humming off the back of a 61 per cent possession rate for a 26-6 lead at the break.

Their second half brought another two tries as they made it an uncomfortable night for the out-of-luck Tigers.

Both Matt Ikuvalu and Miller were playing just their third match for Cronulla this year, coming in for the injured Siosifa Talakai and Will Kennedy respectively.

And both wings scored in the opening 10 minutes.

The Wests Tigers disrupted the flow with hooker Fa’amanu Brown, who spent three seasons at the Sharks, barged over from dummy-half to give his team a sniff at 12-6.

But then prop Royce Hunt ran right over the top of fullback Dane Laurie and Dykes had his piece of personal history and the game was indeed getting away from Brett Kimmorley’s side.

It only took Cronulla just 13 minutes to score the first points of the second half — another prop barging over, this time Braden Hamin-Uele dragging three defenders with him for a 32-6 lead.

But it lit a small fuse in the Tigers with back rower Luke Gardner getting on the outside of Dykes for a 20-meter dash to the line.

However, Jesse Ramien crossed for his ninth try of the year just before things started to turn sour for the Sharks.

They lost two players to injuries — Toby Rudolf (knee) and Miller (head injury assessment) — and then back rower Teig Wilton was sin-binned for a late tackle on Laurie.

Wests Tigers winger Brent Naden waltzed through flimsy defense to cross the line but the try was over-ruled because of obstruction.

It just was not the Tigers’ night and it does not get any easier for them as they face the Sydney Roosters next Saturday.

Roosters Down Cowboys

A Sydney Roosters NRL player holds the ball as a North Queensland opponent attempts to tackle him.

The race for the top eight is all but over after the Sydney Roosters ran through North Queensland 32-18 at the SCG.

Teenage sensation Joseph Suaalii starred with a big first half, while Sam Verrills scored a double just days after confirming he was leaving the Roosters.

Flags were flown at half-mast for the late Paul Green and the Cowboys were gutsy in the circumstances with 10 players still left from the former coach’s his time in charge of the club.

But ultimately the Roosters were too classy, virtually ending North Queensland’s hopes of top spot on the ladder and handing the minor premiership to Penrith.

At the other end of the top eight, the finals race has also become clearer.

The Roosters looked in serious danger of missing the finals a month ago but have now won five straight since their round-17 bye.

Realistically, the only way they could now miss the top eight is if they lost their last three matches and Canberra win their last four.

And with the way the Roosters are playing ahead of their next game against Wests Tigers, that looks unlikely.

The Roosters controlled the match perfectly, quickly extinguishing any sniff the Cowboys had when they drew back to 10-4 and 20-10 deficits.

Matt Lodge and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves were influential in the middle as both scored tries.

And while they each topped 150 running meters, only Luciano Leilua reached three figures in the Cowboys’ pack.

Suaalii was also in everything early.

He claimed the Roosters’ first try courtesy of an under-arm harbour-bridge pass from Victor Radley.

The winger also jammed in on Scott Drinkwater and Griffin Neame with powerful hits, the second of which forced an error and line dropout before the Roosters scored soon after.

And if that was not enough, the 19-year-old also put the Roosters on the attack later in the half with another linebreak out of his own end.

Radley also had a high involvement. After the lofted ball for Suaalii’s try, I laid on a nice short pass for Lodge to stroll over along the posts.

The Roosters’ other first-half points came via Daniel Tupou on the left wing, after Murray Taulagi had briefly given the Cowboys some hope with his own try.

There was controversy, with the Roosters stretching the lead to 20-6 after the break when the Cowboys claimed Lodge had held Griffin Neame back in a scrum as Verrills went over untouched.

Cowboys captain Chad Townsend approached referee Ashley Klein after the try was given to protest but the bunker opted not to intervene and the try was confirmed.

Ultimately, the Roosters’ strength with Verrills and Waerea-Hargreaves crossing late before a consolation try for the Cowboys came via Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.

Transfer Whispers, Jock Madden, Panthers, Jake Clifford, Knights, Ethan Bullemor, Sea Eagles, contracts

Knights playmaker Jake Clifford is reportedly considering an early exit from his contract, while the Panthers links to Jock Madden are heating up.

Meanwhile, Manly forward Ethan Bullemor is considering a shock career move.

MANLY STAR EYEING SHOCK CAREER MOVE

Manly forward Ethan Bullemor is reportedly considering early retirement from rugby league to take up a career in finance.

The Daily Telegraph reported Bullemor is weighing up cutting his rugby league career short to take up a job at a fund manager in Sydney.

The 22-year-old has scored four tries in 34 NRL games since his debut for the Broncos in 2020, including nine games since his move to Manly this season.

The versatile back-rower is a bright kid away from footy and could opt to use his skills and knowledge of the financial sector over his obvious prowess on the sporting field.

Bullemor is contracted to Manly until the end of the 2023 season, but is weighing up retiring at the end of 2022 to make the shock career switch.

The promising forward has struggled for consistent opportunities at Manly, but with Andrew Davey reportedly moving on at the end of the season and Josh Schuster switching to five-eighth, Bullemor could be a key player next year for Des Hasler.

Haumole Olakau’atu and Ben Trbojevic loomed as his main competition next season, but Bullemor could opt to trade it all in for an opportunity in finance.

KNIGHTS PLAYMAKER EYEING EARLY EXIT

Out of favor Knights playmaker Jake Clifford is reportedly considering cutting his stay at Newcastle short.

The Daily Telegraph reported Clifford’s lack of game time in 2022 could see him exit the club despite being contracted until the end of 2023.

The 24-year-old has scored 11 tries and 187 points in 67 games since his NRL debut for the Cowboys in 2018, but has only managed 12 games in 2022.

No potential destination for Clifford has emerged with a return to the Cowboys unlikely given their success and depth in the halves.

Making a release request difficult for Clifford is the fact the Knights are losing Anthony Milford to the Dolphins next year, while Phoenix Crossland remains unsigned.

If the Knights don’t get Luke Brooks they would be mad to let Clifford go without getting something in return.

Clifford would walk into the Knights’ starting side next year, but has struggled for form in 2022 and fallen behind Milford and Adam Clune in the pecking order.

PANTHERS EYE TIGERS HALF AMID PLAYMAKER LOGJAM

Reports Tigers halfback Jock Madden is set to join the Panthers are growing louder amid the playmaker logjam at Concord.

The Daily Telegraph reported the Panthers have emerged as a potential landing spot for Madden and as there is little interest elsewhere, a move to Penrith is growing more likely.

Madden is currently the Tigers’ starting halfback after injuries to Jackson Hastings and Luke Brooks, but remains unsigned beyond 2022.

The 24-year-old has scored two tries in 13 games for the Tigers since his debut in 2021, but has only managed 10 games in his contract year in 2022.

Madden had been linked with the Dolphins, but the signing of Sean O’Sullivan and Isaiya Katoa from the Panthers and Milford has them well stocked in the halves.

That leaves an opening at the Panthers, but the only issue is Madden is looking for more NRL game time and unless injuries strike he won’t beat Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai to a starting spot.

AFL 2022: Adelaide Crows vs North Melbourne, fans rejoice over Ben Cunnington’s return from cancer after 385 days

There were emotional scenes at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon as North Melbourne’s Ben Cunnington returned to AFL action for the first time in more than a year.

The Kangaroos midfielder has survived two bouts of testicular cancer that have kept him out of the AFL since he last played in round 19 last year — 385 days ago.

Cunnington, a two-time North best and fairest, addressed his teammates during the week and spoke about his battle and the support from his family and the club that helped him fight his way back.

It has been a long and emotional journey back to senior football for the 31-year-old, who was seen soaking up the moment by himself in the middle of Adelaide Oval before North’s clash with the Crows.

And many footy fans would have shed a tear watching Cunnington embrace his partner and walked out onto the field with his three children.

Cunnington took a few deep breaths as she ran through the banner.

The Herald Sun’s Lauren Wood said it would be “tough to top for footy’s moment of the year”.

Broadcaster Chad Ryan tweeted: “Bloody powerful stuff. F*** cancer. So glad to have Cunnington back.”

Peter Hooley said: “Man, who’s cutting onions. Love every little thing about this. Go well Cunners.”

Cunnington finished with 17 disposals and three clearances in a solid performance.

The Crows spoiled his return, pushing ahead in the last quarter to claim a 103 (15.14) to 74 (10.14).

Dual premiership-winning Kangaroo David King said it was “so good” to see Cunnington back playing for North.

“Just really rapt to see him back out there and wearing the jumper,” he said on Fox Footy.

“Things look right for the Kangaroos when he’s out there.

“I think he’s been the Kangaroos’ best player since the turn of the century. This guy’s impact on football has been phenomenal for us.”

“You think you might be done with the game but until it gets taken away from you, you quickly realize how much you do love it,” Cunnington told Fox Footy post game.

“To get another opportunity to play, I couldn’t be more appreciative and grateful.”

“Even though we lost I can’t stop smiling, I’m just trying to appreciate it right now.”

Big changes for Super Rugby teams if Scott Robertson gets All Blacks job

If Crusaders coach Scott Robertson (right) replaces under-fire All Blacks coach Ian Foster, he's tipped to recruit Blues coach Leon MacDonald to join his staff as an assistant.

If Crusaders coach Scott Robertson (right) replaces under-fire All Blacks coach Ian Foster, he’s tipped to recruit Blues coach Leon MacDonald to join his staff as an assistant.

If Crusaders coach Scott Robertson replaces Ian Foster as All Blacks coach, it’s understood Leon MacDonald and Jason Holland will be among those recruited as his assistants.

Former Crusaders forwards coach Jason Ryan, who was asked by Foster to replace Plumtree after the 2-1 series loss to Ireland last month, is expected to be retained if Robertson gets the job.

With incumbent Foster under immense pressure after five defeats from six tests, the match against the Springboks in Johannesburg on Sunday morning may be his final game in charge before he either resigns or is sacked by NZ Rugby.

ALL BLACKS

All Blacks No 10 opens up on his horrific spill in the opening test against the Springboks in Mbombela.

Speculation about Foster’s future has reached fever pitch since the All Blacks were beaten 26-10 by the Springboks in Mbombela last weekend, with a groundswell of support for Robertson to replace him before the next Rugby Championship test against Argentina in Christchurch on August 27.

Should he take over from Foster, Robertson will want to hand-pick the assistants he believes can help produce a team capable of winning the World Cup in France next year.

It’s understood MacDonald and Holland, who coach the Blues and the Hurricanes, Ryan and Crusaders assistant coach Scott Hansen have been short-listed.

Jason Ryan joined the All Blacks as forwards coach before the trip to South Africa.

Jason Ryan joined the All Blacks as forwards coach before the trip to South Africa.

When Robertson was interviewed for the All Blacks job after the 2019 World Cup – he was overlooked for Foster – he wanted Ryan, MacDonald and Holland on his coaching staff.

After Ryan left the Crusaders – he had coached under his friend Robertson at the franchise since 2017 – he made it clear how difficult the decision was. But he said he couldn’t turn down the All Blacks.

“We worked together for 12 years, so let’s not hide from that,” Ryan said in reference to Robertson. “We had a good chat and a good coffee. I wished me all the best, and it was a good moment.”

If he does get the job, and recruits MacDonald and Holland, it will mean the Crusaders, Blues and Hurricanes will be forced to search for new coaches to lead their programs.

Jason Holland assisted Scott Robertson at Canterbury before moving to the Hurricanes. Holland was appointed head coach of the Hurricanes when John Plumtree joined the All Blacks in 2020.

MacDonald, who played with Robertson at the Crusaders and assisted him when the team won the 2017 Super Rugby title, was appointed Blues coach in 2019.

Robertson was instrumental in arranging a job for Holland at Canterbury in 2013 when he returned to New Zealand following a long playing and coaching career at Irish club Munster.

Holland later moved to the Hurricanes and in 2020 took over the top job after Plumtree accepted Foster’s invitation to join the All Blacks.

Dejected All Blacks coach Ian Foster and talks to his players following the 26-10 loss to the Springboks in Mbombela last weekend.

The Crusaders, undoubtedly, will be hit hardest if Robertson replaces Foster.

The Christchurch-based franchise has yet to name a replacement for Ryan. If Robertson and Hansen, who deals with the game plan and attack strategies, also depart it will mean the franchise will have to fill three positions.

Had NZ Rugby appointed Robertson as coach instead of Foster in late 2019, it could have potentially avoided such a messy situation.

If Robertson, MacDonald and Holland do join the All Blacks, the contracting part of the transition should be relatively smooth given they are all directly accountable to NZ Rugby.

Following the Irish series Foster sacked attack coach Brad Mooar and Plumtree, while replacing departing selector Grant Fox with ex-Ireland coach Joe Schmidt.

Now, if Foster departs, it’s unclear whether scrum coach Greg Feek, defense mentor Scott McLeod, Schmidt and the other management staff will remain with the All Blacks.

F1 2022: Motorsports world stunned by ‘incredible’ eight-car crash in Formula E at Seoul Grand Prix

An extraordinary eight-car crash has brought the second last race of the Formula E championship to a halt in Seoul on Saturday.

The chaos occurred on the opening lap of the Seoul E-Prix as the field went into the last corner, led by Jaguar driver Norman Nato.

Watch Every Practice, Qualifying & Race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™ Live on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

After Nato came Sebastiaen Beumi, who was then followed by Nick Cassidy, Dan Ticktum, Oliver Askew, Andre Lotterer, Nyck De Vries and Oliver Turvey.

Nato and Cassidy were the only drivers able to continue their race after they managed to remove themselves for the messy pileup.

The race was red flagged but motorsport fans couldn’t believe their eyes as a car became perched on top of the Mercedes of De Vries, who was protected by the halo.

“A couple of big hits at the back,” the commentator said.

“Everyone piles into the back, a really weird accident that. Very strange incident there.”

Motorsport writer Hazel Southwell tweeted: “Buemi, Askew, Lotterer, Ticktum, Turvey, Cassidy, Nato and De Vries in the wall. Buemi also on the Mercedes. simply incredible Formula E stuff (red flag, they all seem to be OK, just no one seemed to be able to brake).”

Several of the cars had to be taken away on the back of trucks, much to the amusement of viewers.

Nato said the slippery surface on the wide part of the track, which weaves through Seoul’s Olympic Stadium, was his undoing.

“In the middle of the pack the visibility in the last sector was quite poor,” said Nato, who was able to restart the race.

“One guy in front of me, I don’t even know who he was to be honest because I couldn’t really see, he was really cautious and braked.

“The two cars in front of me, they tried to avoid him and when I arrived I got a bit surprised and I had to avoid, going on the left-hand side of the apex.

“The tarmac is really different at this part and that’s why we saw so many cars (in the wall) because so many people tried to do the same to avoid the inside because of one car.

“On the outside, you have no chance to turn. Six cars or seven cars out in one corner is not what we expected.”

Lotterer added: “Basically, it was super slippery out there.

“Same, like the other guys, just touched the brakes and it was just like ice. Nothing you can do from that point on.

“I don’t think it’s braking too late, it was where there was paint, maybe some cars just happened to be on those patches of paint and lock up and that’s it.

“I managed to find a little gap and not hit another car but I still hit it, but not full on.”

The race restarted with Mitch Evans in the lead, who went on to claim victory in the penultimate race of the season ahead of Oliver Rowland and Lucas di Grassi.

It means the championship battle will go down to the last race of the season as Evans attempts to chase down Stoffel Vandoorne.

Paul Green death, age, Cowboys coach death, Jason Taumalolo, how did Paul Green die?, Todd Payten, player reaction

Cowboys skipper Jason Taumalolo said there were “no words” to express what he and his teammates were feeling in the wake of Paul Green’s shock death.

The rugby league legend passed away at his Brisbane home on Thursday and tributes have since flooded in for the former North Queensland coach.

Green led the Cowboys to premiership victory in 2015, with Jason Taumalolo starting at lockout, having been coached by the former representative halfback from 2014 to 2020.

Taumalolo was the only player to take the field on Saturday that was a part of the 2015 grand final team, giving an emotional plea for people to speak out no matter “how big or small the problem is”.

“It has been a big few days given what has happened, no real words really to express what has happened over the last few days,” Taumalolo said in the post-match press conference.

“How it has affected people in the rugby league community, and families, I can’t imagine what Amanda and the kids are going through right now.

“Everyone should have someone to talk to, regardless of how big or small the problem is, no one should have to carry around that pressure with them.

Fletch lauds Green’s Roosters influence | 03:04

“We have a tight-knit group and I know rugby league teams have their own little groups, I just hope that if anyone is going through something they have someone to talk to about any problems.”

Taumalolo went on to say the loss of their former coach “shocked and rattled” the playing group after the club’s 32-18 loss to the Roosters.

“I think everyone copes with loss and grief differently and yeah, I am not sure about any of the other boys but everyone is affected differently,”

“I’d like to think we are a tight-knit group and we are able to talk to each other whether we are going through a tough time or something really difficult.

“But again, I think just what has happened has really shocked and rattled most of us and it is going to take some time to get over it.”

Cowboys coach Todd Payten echoed Taumalolo’s sentiment, revealing NRL powerbrokers have provided the club with necessary resources to deal with the shock loss.

“The club and the league have been great with the resources they have provided us as a group,” Payten said.

“It is my job to make sure that we keep an eye out for each other, that everyone feels comfortable that they can go and see me or someone within the club to get some help.”

During the Cowboys and Roosters clash, both teams wore black armbands to remember Green, who had a lasting impact on both clubs.

Green was assistant to Trent Robinson in 2013, his first year at the helm of the Tricolours club — and in that year they won the premiership.

Green also played 35 games for the Cowboys and 20 for the Roosters during his glittering 162-game playing career.

Cam Rayner fires Brisbane Lions to comeback win as St Kilda Saints finals hopes look gone

Wood’s goal-kicking on the run was a highlight for the Saints, as was Seb Ross’ tireless performance with 32 possessions, while Lachie Neale, Hugh McCluggage and Dayne Zorko were too much for St Kilda for much of the night, although Zorko and Neale granted some needless free kicks in the second half.

Fagan confirmed McCluggage had spent the day back home in Warrnambool attending the funeral of his grandmother before driving back to Melbourne and playing.

“He wanted to play, I was a little worried he could be risking a soft-tissue injury,” Fagan said.

“I desperately wanted to play and put on a good show.”

“He’s a pretty mature young man, he would have wanted to play for his grandmother so good on him.”

The Saints also lost running defender Jimmy Webster to a hamstring injury, with medical sub Zak Jones coming into the game for him at quarter-time.

One thing that will have the Lions smiling was the performance of forward Eric Hipwood, whose return from a knee reconstruction continues to take shape. They will need him at his best come the finals, while Daniel Rich’s run and poise in defense was exceptional as was the toughness of Gardiner in his 150th game.

Crouch’s season hangs in balance

As some on Twitter joked, perhaps Saints midfielder Brad Crouch should start booking his off-season holiday after his late bump on Lions defender Darcy Gardiner in the second quarter.

Gardiner kicked the ball downfield and was collected by Crouch from the side, with the 150-gamer crashing hard into the ground and appearing to be hurt. But he managed to get up and be cleared to continue by Brisbane’s medical staff.

Regardless of Gardiner’s health, the replays looked pretty damning for Crouch, with a two-game ban meaning he would miss the final round and the Saints’ first final, should they make it.

Zorko caught out by Higgins

Lions captain Dayne Zorko was caught out by the ever cheeky Jack Higgins in the third term when the Saints’ forward was lining up a shot from goal. Higgins motioned like he was about to play on and Zorko, who was on the mark, moved in response, which saw him called for a 50-meter penalty for moving on the mark. The “stand rule” has done great things for allowing attacking players more room to move this season, but a situation like Zorko’s will raise a few questions. The golden rule clearly is that players can’t move at all on the mark until play on is called. Such a play could prove very costly in a final match.

Lions their own worst enemy

Is there a side in the AFL more frustrating than the Lions? Their wasteful kicking for goal hurt them throughout the night, including six shots for goal which registered no score at all. More concerning was some of their turnovers and brain fades, especially late in the third term when the Saints regained the momentum and then the lead. The Lions have the talent to challenge for the premiership but whether they have the poise is still in doubt.

Hulking Aussie Jordan Mailata had murderous intentions on Saturday after New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams delivered a boneheaded moment.

On third-and-5 at the Jets’ 35-yard-line, Hurts scrambled toward the Jets’ sideline. He clearly was out of bounds when Williams drilled him. Sirianni was incensed and walked onto the field, screaming in the direction of the Jets sideline and head coach Robert Saleh. Hurts was not injured and continued the drive, which ended with him throwing a 22-yard touchdown to Dallas Goedert.

Saleh was not happy with Williams and said he spoke to Sirianni after the game, a 24-21 Jets win, about the play.

“Egregiously awful by Quincy,” Saleh said. “He knows that. He knows better. Those are the plays Quincy has to get out of his game if he wants to become the linebacker that we all think he can be.”

Mailata, the Eagles left tackle, was quick to remonstrate with Williams as the monster came storming in and let him know about it.

NBCS Philadelphia journalist Dave Zangaro wrote: “Jordan Mailata said he was “seeing red” when Jalen Hurts took that shot on the sideline. He wouldn’t repeat what he said at the moment.”

The hit left fans watching on incensed as the angry reactions flooded in towards Williams and his horror shot.

The Jets will be sweating on the outcome of their own quarterback after Zach Wilson went down on the second drive of the game.

Wilson scrambled and went down with no contact, leaving many to fear he had torn his ACL which would end his season before it even officially begins.

“I’m always concerned until you get the final evaluation,” Saleh said. “We’ve walked off the field with very positive thoughts and it’s been opposite. We’ve walked off the field with bad initial readings and it’s been the opposite. I’m just going to let it play out and we’ll see.”
