‘That’s not normal’: Van Vleuten tears up the GC on the Tour’s first mountain stage

The GC race had barely begun before stage 7. Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) was sitting in yellow on borrowed time before the mountains with the GC favorites dotted around the top 10. Just 2:34 separated Vos in first and Elise Chabbey (Canyon -SRAM) in 10th.

After Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) had her way in the Vosges Mountains, however, the GC was torn to pieces.

The 39-year-old’s 60 km-long assault on the GC race sees her leading by 3:14 ahead of her nearest rival, Demi Vollering (SD Worx0, who valiantly stuck with her compatriot until she could no longer match her pace on the climbs.

“That’s not normal,” Vollering said of Van Vleuten’s performance. “I said to her it’s not normal what you did. She said, I have so much more training experience and experience overall. She said to me that it will come to me, so let’s hope.”

Vollering stayed away on her own ahead of a chasing group of favorites to finish 5:16 ahead of Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ Suez Futuroscope) who took third place on the stage. Vollering’s ride puts her at a 1:19 advantage over Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) who started the day in second place.

“It was brutal to be honest,” said Niewiadoma after the stage. “There was seriously no time to recover, no time to do anything, because we started with a lot of attacks from different teams. So the pace was quite high. And then of course, we get the first climb. And it was still just crazy.

“For me personally, I knew that after the second climb, there was a long descent on the big road and the part in the valley was something that you would definitely benefit from when having riders around too. So when I saw [Elisa] Longo Borghini going on her own I knew that it would be a difficult day for her.

“And then on the last climb I just gave my best because I knew that the GC spot or the top three is available for me, especially the third place so basically I rode for that.”

Longo Borghini’s solo efforts meant that she struggled on the final climb after eventually being caught by the group containing Niewiadoma, Juliette Labous (DSM), Uttrup Ludwig, Evita Muzic (FDJ Suez Futuroscope), Urška Žigart (BikeExchange-Jayco), and Silvia Persico (Valcar Travel & Service). The Italian eventually crossed the line 7:23 behind Van Vleuten and 2:07 behind Uttrup Ludwig putting her in seven on GC at 6:15.

“I’m completely exhausted,” Longo Borghini said after the stage. “I’ve been alone for a long time. For me, what really killed me was the valley. I gave my best and that’s it. In the end if you give your best it’s all you can do, and I really did it.

“We all knew that she [Van Vleuten] was the strongest and I didn’t believe for one second that she was not good.

“For me I was rockclimbing the last climb, but what can I say? It’s bike racing.”

Uttrup Ludwig’s third place on the stage has moved the Danish rider up to fifth overall at 5:59. Despite climbing up the GC the 26-year-old seemed uncharacteristically deflated after the stage.

“I just gave it my all,” she said. “I guess then you should be satisfied. I didn’t have much more to give. They were just stronger today,” she said. “I did everything that I could, and I think the rest also. She [Van Vleuten] was just stronger.”

Labous, who finished fourth on the stage after a three-up sprint with Niewiadoma and Uttrup Ludwig has climbed to fourth overall at 5:22 while Muzic, who was in the same group going into the final climb, has entered the top 10 and sits in eighth with a deficit of 10:13 on Van Vleuten.

Italian multidisciplinary rider Silvia Persico beat Longo Borghini in a sprint over the line to come sixth on the stage but still lost time to move into sixth overall at 6:11 back. An in-the-wars Mavi Garcia (UAE Team ADQ) managed to pull up after an unfortunate few stages of crashing to ride to 13th on the stage which propelled her back into the top 10. She sits in ninth place overall, 12:06 behind Van Vleuten.

One of the day’s big GC losers was Vollering’s teammate, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio. Usually one of the peloton’s strongest climbers, the South African could only manage 18th on the stage, 13:43: behind Van Vleuten, dropping to 12th overall.

“I’ve had a bit of a runny nose and stuff but I thought it was just allergies, but my whole body was just aching today,” Moolman Pasio said. “I don’t know, empty today. It’s crazy how you can go from feeling so good to feeling so shit just overnight. But yeah, a really good performance from Demi so we can be happy with that.”

One of the revelations of the day was Žigart who, after a relatively quiet race, spent the day in a group of the peloton’s best climbers. The 25-year-old Slovenian finished the stage in eighth place but is over 30 minutes in arrears on GC.

“It was full gas from the start,” she said. “Already when the big break went. Actually when the platoon split. And then full gas into the full climb. Everybody knew that they had to make a difference as soon as possible and then it’s everybody on their own.

“I wasn’t there – I didn’t see it [Van Vleuten’s move]. I was a little bit stuck and out of position. I had to climb my way back to the group of favourites. We were unlucky to have Kristen [Faulkner] back but I couldn’t push, I couldn’t work in the group. Of course I was a little sad. I felt a bit stupid.

“I felt good [on the day]. I showed the world that I have the climbing legs. Hopefully in the future I can be further up.”

The GC podium seems all but secured with one stage to go, however in the words of Niewiadoma: “you never know what can happen. Bike racing is unpredictable.”

Third quarter blitz as Geelong Cats celebrate Joel Selwood milestone

The result means St Kilda claimed the Bulldogs’ spot in the eighth, but the Saints have the pleasure of playing in Geelong next week with their record at the venue as disspiriting as it is for the Bulldogs.

Selwood did not have to do much but reflect on his record as he played his 300th game alongside Hawkins and enjoyed the 254th win in his career and the 96th of his 110 games at GMHBA Stadium. He has now been on the winning team in each of the seven 50-game milestones in his career after losing on debut ironically to the Bulldogs way back in 2007.

The Bulldogs did not kick their first goal in the second half until the 14-minute mark of the final quarter when Ceglar arrived late to spoil Cody Weightman and conceded a 50-meter penalty.

By then the result was decided with the only disappointment for the Cats being that Gary Rohan was subbed off with concussion while the Bulldogs took Bontempelli off the ground for the final six minutes after he limped around in the last quarter.

Selwood has captained Geelong to 160 wins – a new record.

Horror cycling crash in Men’s 15km Scratch, Matt Walls, Matt Bostock, news

English cyclist Matt Walls was involved in a horror crash at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday when he was catapulted over the barriers and into the crowds at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

The Olympic omnium champion, competing in the men’s 15km scratch qualifiers at the London venue, received treatment for more than 40 minutes before being taken away by ambulance.

Spectators were also hurt after Walls and his bike came over the top of the barriers on the high banking of a corner.

Two other riders — the Isle of Man’s Matt Bostock and Canada’s Derek Gee — were also taken to hospital, while two spectators were treated for minor injuries at the velodrome.

A statement from Team England said: “Following medical treatment in hospital, Matt Walls has been discharged with stitches in his forehead, scrapes and bruises but thankfully no major injuries.”

The Isle of Man team said Bostock had a CT scan from which the initial prognosis was positive.

Witnesses said that because of the gradient of the banking, spectators in the front row had been unsighted for the crash.

One man received treatment for cuts to his arm while a young girl also received medical attention.

Walls had been trying to avoid riders who had failed. The stricken pair of New Zealand’s George Jackson and Australia’s Josh Duffy slid up the banking, forcing Walls up on to the barrier and then over it.

Gee also surfed the top of the barrier but managed to avoid following Walls into the stands but he fell heavily.

A Birmingham 2022 spokesman said in a statement that three cyclists and two spectators had been treated by the on-site medical team.

“The three cyclists have been taken to hospital. The two spectators did not require hospital treatment,” the statement added.

Canadian Mathias Guillemette was disqualified from the race for causing the initial crash and the rest of the morning session was cancelled.

British five-time Olympic gold medalist Laura Kenny, who is competing for England at the Commonwealths, called for bigger barriers or screens to be fitted in velodromes to improve safety.

Kenny, speaking a day after England’s Joe Truman was knocked unconscious in a crash, fears the sport is growing more dangerous.

“I think the crashes are getting worse and it’s because the speeds are getting higher, the positions (on the bike) are getting more extreme,” she said.

“Some of the pursuit positions people are getting in, you see people crashing into the back of people.

“At some point the UCI (cycling’s governing body) are going to have to put a cap on these positions. Maybe there should be screens because Matt should not have been able to go over the top and into the crowd — that’s pretty damn dangerous.” Australia dominated the afternoon session, with Georgia Baker taking gold in the women’s 25km points race and Kristina Clonan winning the women’s 500m time trial in a time of 33.234sec.

Australia’s Matthew Richardson won the men’s sprint, denying Trinidad and Tobago’s Nicholas Paul a second gold of the Games.

New Zealand’s Corbin Strong won the men’s 15km scratch to leave the Kiwis on six cycling golds, one behind Australia.

Most of the events at the Commonwealths are being held in Birmingham but the track cycling is taking place in London.

Arsenal vs. Seville – Football Match Report – July 30, 2022

Gabriel Jesus continued his white-hot preseason form as he scored a hat trick in Arsenal’s 6-0 victory over Sevilla in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

The Emirates Stadium rippled with applause in the ninth minute in tribute of Jose Antonio Reyes. Reyes, a former player of both Arsenal and Sevilla died in 2019.

Just a minute after the moving tribute, Arsenal fans were again on their feet as Bukayo Saka opened the scoring, sending Bono the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Summer signing Jesus swiftly followed with two goals in two minutes — first sweeping home a loose ball in the box after Bono’s fumble, and later pouncing on Gabriel Martinelli’s deep cross after a perfectly-timed run in behind Sevilla’s backline.

Saka scored his second and Arsenal’s fourth 19 minutes in, when he latched on Bono’s poor clearance and fired home, between the 31-year-old goalkeeper’s legs.

And Jesus, who now has seven goals in his five preseason outings, continued the scoring 13 minutes from time — he bundled home Arsenal’s fifth after Martinelli’s corner wasn’t dealt with.

Substitute Eddie Nketiah rounded off the onslaught a minute before the game’s conclusion, after being teed up by the newly announced captain Martin Odegaard.

After his first game as fixed captain of the club, Odegaard said: “Of course I was happy, proud and grateful for the trust and for him wanting me to be the captain. That’s a big achievement for me and it’s nice to be part of such a good team, so I’m going to enjoy that.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “He represents the values of this football club, of his teammates, of the staff. He’s respected by everyone inside the club. I’m proud to announce him as captain.”

Daniel Ricciardo penalized as Max Verstappen wins F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo has missed out on a points finish after being penalized for causing a collision during Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen climbed from 10th to take another victory and extend his lead in the Drivers’ Championship after Ferrari again threw away another potential victory.

Ricciardo was driving well and comfortably challenging in the top 10 around the Hungaroring in Budapest.

But the Australian’s day came unstuck when his brand new hard tires locked up just a few corners after exiting the pits and led to him running into the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll.

Stroll was attempting to pass the Australian before the collision, which sent the Aston Martin driver spinning.

Ricciardo was given a five-second penalty which took him out of contention for a top 10 finish.

Ricciardo had provided one of the highlights of the race on lap 24 with a double-overtake of the Alpine drivers Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.

Ricciardo was chasing Alonso down the main straight when Ocon came out of the pits trying to stay ahead in 10th.

The Alpine drivers got in each other’s way, allowing Ricciardo to showcase his skills by passing both of them on consecutive corners.

Ferrari blunder again

Ferrari’s hopes of winning either the Drivers’ or Constructors’ Championships in 2022 have taken a massive blow after Max Verstappen took the checkered flag.

Heading into Sunday’s race Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said his team needed a first and second place finish at a track where they were favourites.

But Ferrari’s tire strategy robbed Charles Leclerc of a chance of victory and he finished sixth.

Leclerc was leading at half-distance and was the fastest on track, but was forced to go onto the hard compound tire during his second stop after starting on the mediums.

The hard tire was the worst performing on Sunday, with many drivers including Ricciardo struggling on it.

Meanwhile, Verstappen was able to storm home on the medium tire but had his own drama when he spun on a slippery part of the surface.

“I was hoping I could get close to a podium [finish],” he said.

“We had a really good strategy, we were really reactive, always pitting at the right times.”

Verstappen now holds an 80-point lead over Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship.

Post race Leclerc said he wanted to stay out on his medium tires and pit later for a set of the faster soft compounds.

“We need to speak with the team and understand the thought behind putting on the hard [tyre],” he said.

Liverpool defeats Manchester City to win Community Shield, highlights, Darwin Nunez goal, Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez

Liverpool struck first blood against Manchester City ahead of the new Premier League season as Darwin Nunez made an instant impact for Jurgen Klopp’s men to win the Community Shield 3-1.

In a tale of two big summer signings, Nunez came off the bench to win a penalty and score his first goal since an $AUD109 million move from Benfica, while Erling Haaland had a City debut to forget.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s blistering strike gave Liverpool a deserved halftime lead in Leicester.

But it was City’s other new forward who hauled Pep Guardiola’s men back into the game after the break as Julian Alvarez equalised.

Tying down Mohamed Salah to a new three-year deal was Liverpool’s other major piece of summer business and the Egyptian was deadly from the penalty spot after Nunez’s header was handled by Ruben Dias.

The Uruguayan then got his own glory moment by stooping to head home in stoppage time before tearing off his shirt in celebration.

Victory saw Liverpool win the traditional season curtain-raiser for the first time since 2006 and lay down an early marker in what is expected to be another battle between the sides for the Premier League title.

City held off the Reds to win the Premier League for a fourth time in five years by a point in a thrilling finale to last season.

Guardiola’s men had to come from 2-0 down on the final day of the campaign to beat Aston Villa and were again guilty of a slow start.

Salah was the provider for the opening goal as he laid Thiago Alcantara’s cross field pass back to the edge of the box and Alexander-Arnold smashed in off the post with the aid of a slight deflection off Dias.

City had played just two pre-season friendlies to Liverpool’s four and took half an hour to find their feet.

Haaland was denied by Liverpool stand-in goalkeeper Adrian with his first sight of goal.

However, the Norwegian should have opened his City account moments later as he failed to properly connect with Joao Cancelo’s inviting cross.

Nunez was given his chance to shine on the hour mark, but fluffed his first big chance when Ederson prevailed in a one-on-one.

At the other end, City’s new South American striker also got his career in England off to a flying start.

Alvarez’s arrival at the Etihad has gone under the radar in the hype surrounding Haaland.

But the Argentine, who scored six goals in one Copa Libertadores match in May, is also regarded as one of the world’s most exciting young forwards.

Alvarez was quickest to react to the rebound after Adrian saved Phil Foden’s initial effort and the goal stood after a VAR review for offside.

It needed another the intervention of VAR once more for Liverpool to restore their lead seven minutes from time.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot after seeing a replay of Nunez’s header coming back off the arm of Dias.

Salah was deadly as ever from 12 yards as he drilled into the bottom corner despite Ederson going the right way.

Nunez then ended any doubt over the result when he pounced on Andy Robertson’s header across goal.

But City’s miserable day did not end there as Haaland hit the bar with the goal gaping deep in stoppage time to keep the Norwegian superstar waiting to open his account in English football.

Giants coach Mark McVeigh slams own team after Sydney Swans thrashing

The GWS Giants have been lambasted by interim coach Mark McVeigh who said the club was embarrassed in their 17.10 (112) to 5.9 (39) thumping in the Sydney Derby and questioned whether some of his players had “checked out”.

The Sydney Swans victory was courtesy of their highest margin in a derby since 2015 and further incurred humiliation on a Giants outfit that have won only five games for the season and now sit in a 16th position.

Watch every blockbuster AFL match this weekend Live & Ad-Break Free In-Play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

It’s a horrible predicament for a list still laden with so much talent and that prompted McVeigh to lash out post-game.

“We embarrassed our club,” he said.

“They’re far superior to us at the moment, clearly. It’s an unfortunate part of dealing with whether players have checked out or not.”

“I’m extremely disappointed with our midfield as a whole today. It’s just pure work rate and effort. Wanting to defend, wanting to tackle. The motivation should be how proud you are of you as a player and how proud you are of playing for the Giants.”

McVeigh said only eight players in Sam Taylor, Harry Perryman, Josh Kelly, Callan Ward, Adam Kennedy, Lachie Whitfield, Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene “went to the wall” and fought through until the end of the game.

The former Essendon great said he spent a long time in the rooms with the players after the game and sat in silence to see what responses were elicited from the playing group.

I have added that there needs to be a leadership change over in the playing group at the club.

“Without going too much into it we got some good honest feedback from our peers and players which is good. Some players spoke up that you don’t often hear from which is what we need from this club going forward.”

McVeigh singled out two players as future leaders of the club in Harry Perryman, who did an excellent job tagging Swans jet Chad Warner and Sam Taylor who was supreme at the back yet again as he pushes for an All-Australian guernsey and first best and fairest award.

“He is severely dominating games. I’d hate to think if he wasn’t playing how many goals they would have kicked. He’s a star, absolute star,” McVeigh said.

F1 Hungarian GP 2022 results: Daniel Ricciardo disaster after Lance Stroll collision

Daniel Ricciardo’s nightmare season has only gotten worse, with the Australian finishing 15th in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.

Despite starting in 10th position on the starting grid and spinning on Lap 40, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won his eighth race of the season to extend his lead in the drivers’ standings ahead of the mid-season.

It was a remarkable day for Verstappen, but the same certainly couldn’t be said for his former teammate Ricciardo.

Watch Every Practice, Qualifying & Race of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™ Live on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The McLaren driver was on track for a potential points finish before a collision with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll on Lap 48 ruined his race.

Ricciardo and Stroll were battling for position before the 33-year-old’s tires locked up and he understeered into Stroll as they went around the outside of Turn 2.

The Canadian spun around and Ricciardo was handed a five-second penalty for causing a collision.

Nothing went right for Ricciardo after the incident, slowly slipping down the order on the slower, hard tyres.

He was overtaken by Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel and AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda before eventually finishing 15th, behind Haas’ Mick Schumacher.

Earlier in the Grand Prix, Ricciardo was celebrating a stunning double overtake that elevated him into the points.

The Australian, who started ninth on the grid, was down in 12th following an early pit stop, but managed to swoop past both Alpine drivers in a matter of seconds on Lap 24.

While Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso were skirmishing on Turn 2, Ricciardo went wide and slipped down the inside on the next corner.

It was arguably his best moment of the season to date.

“Let’s f***ing go,” the Perth driver yelled on the team radio.

There were few scary moments throughout Sunday’s race — AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda went for a spin on Lap 35, while Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas retired on the penultimate lap, forcing a late virtual safety car.

Rain also started falling on the track with a couple of minutes remaining, meaning Verstappen had to tip-toe his way towards the finish line.

But the reigning world champion kept his composure and got the job done, winning his eighth race of the season and 28th of his career.

“I was at first hoping that I could get close to a podium, but very tricky conditions out there but we had a really good strategy,” Verstappen said.

“We were really reactive and always pitting at the right time, I thought we had some good out laps, and at the end – even with the 360 – we won the race.

“It was a crazy race and I’m of course very happy that we won it.”

The F1 season will resume at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, August 28.

Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester United – Football Match Report – July 30, 2022

Erik ten Hag suffered his first defeat as Manchester United manager as Atletico Madrid recorded a 1-0 win in their preseason friendly in Oslo.

Joao Felix scored the only goal of the game three minutes from time after a feisty encounter which saw Fred sent off in stoppage time.

– Dawson: Ten Hag can take positives from preseason tour

Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire both had chances for United, who suffered their first set-back of the summer following three wins and a draw on their tour of Thailand and Australia.

Ten Hag gave a hint about his starting XI for the Premier League opener against Brighton next week by picking a strong side against Atletico which included Maguire, Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial.

Jadon Sancho would have also started after making the trip to Oslo but missed out after falling ill overnight.

New signings Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen were both named on the bench for the first time after completing their moves to Old Trafford.

Eriksen impressed after coming on as a second-half substitute but the Denmark midfielder could not find a way to break down a stubborn Atletico defense which held firm despite plenty of pressure from Ten Hag’s side.

Rashford and Maguire both had good chances to score but it was Joao Felix who was clinical with his opportunity late on when he fired low past De Gea.

Fred, booked in the first half, was then sent off for picking up a second yellow card following a challenge on Alvaro Morata.

Ten Hag has one more chance to run the rule over his players ahead of the new season with a friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday.

He is set to give squad players a chance to bolster their fitness against the Spanish side while Cristiano Ronaldo has also indicated he will play some part.

Ronaldo returned to Carrington last week after missing the tour to deal with a family issue.

The 37-year-old is keen to leave the club this summer although so far United have been signed in their stance that he is not available for transfer.

The Portugal striker has a year left on his contract, plus the option of another season, and has been linked with moves to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.
