Collingwood beat Melbourne by seven points in yet another thriller to make it 11 straight wins

Jamie Elliott has kicked four goals in his 150th game to help Collingwood upset Melbourne by seven points and stamp themselves as a genuine AFL premiership threat.

The lead swung on the last five goals of a pulsating contest at the MCG on Friday night before the Magpies prevailed 15.6 (96) to 13.11 (89) in front of 70,956 fans.

It was Collingwood’s 10th win by a margin of less than two goals in a rolling first season under Craig McRae, lifting them into a second spot on the ladder.

But the fallout could hurt, with Will Hoskin-Elliott (hip flexor) substituted out, Nick Daicos (ribs) hurt and Mason Cox set to come under scrutiny for driving his knee up into Max Gawn’s stomach at a ruck contest.

Ash Johnson matched Elliott’s tally with four goals, Daicos (31 disposals) was brilliant at half-back, Jordan De Goey (24 touches, nine clearances) had an impact in the middle and hard-working forward Brody Mihocek (two goals) played a key role opposed to Steven May.

Clayton Oliver (42 disposals, 14 clearances) was best afield for Melbourne and Gawn (31, 10) was superb, while Ben Brown and Bayley Fritsch kicked two goals each.

But they couldn’t stop an irresistible second-half surge from Collingwood, who trailed by 23 points during the second quarter and kicked seven goals to three after the main break to overpower the reigning premiers.

The fuse was lit for a red-hot contest when Ed Langdon branded Collingwood “a bit of a one-trick pony” in a radio interview on Thursday.

The response was one of intent, with the Melbourne wingman crunched by Brayden Maynard in the opening exchanges and immediately set upon by three other Magpies.

Elliott marked his milestone with two first-quarter goals but it was the Demons who led by eight points after a fast-paced opening term.

Every Langdon touch was booed by the Magpie Army and Melbourne fans also found a villain to jeer when Cox thrust his knee into Gawn at a ball-up.

Melbourne dominated overall play in the second term thanks to their brilliant midfield – Christian Petracca (36 disposals) and Andrew Brayshaw (32) were prominent — and could easily have led by more than 17 points at half-time.

But Collingwood kept themselves in it with superior efficiency, crafting eight goals from just 18 forward entries to the Demons’ 10 from 41.

The Magpies evened up the midfield battle and attacked the contest with ferocity in the third quarter and cut the margin to seven points by the final change.

Daicos was crunched in a Fritsch tackle when he was called to play on after a mark but returned in pain after having his ribs checked.

The lead changed hands five times in an epic final quarter before Collingwood hit the front for the last time through Johnson, who converted a free kick after being pushed in the back by Harrison Petty.

Sea Eagles playmaker Kieran Foran suffered a hamstring injury in his side’s clash against the Eels in a brutal blow to the club’s final chances.

The 32-year-old left the field with seven minutes remaining in the contest and was spotted by Fox League’s Greg Alexander.

“That is not a good picture, Kieren Foran sitting there with an ice pack on his hamstring,” Fox League’s Greg Alexander said.

Manly coach Des Hasler conceded the veteran is unlikely to feature in Round 22.

“He has got a mild hamstring strain, so I don’t think he will make it next week,” Hasler said in the post-match press conference.

As it stands, the Sea Eagles sit four points outside the top eight and need all hands on deck if they want to make a late finals charge.

But now, Hasler will need to look elsewhere, potentially handing young gun Josh Schuster a chance to return at five-eighth.

Meanwhile, Fox League’s Lara Pitt confirmed Titans star Aaron Booth will be sidelined for an extended period after his knee dislocated.

X-rays revealed Booth suffered a small break in his leg, with scans tomorrow expected to show an ACL, MCL and PCL rupture.

MELBOURNE’S COSTLY BLOW

Melbourne’s injury crisis may have deepened with halfback Jahrome Hughes leaving the game against the Titans on Friday night with a shoulder complaint.

Hughes played out the first half but was assessed at half-time and Storm coach Craig Bellamy opted against using him in the second stanza.

“Jahrome Hughes will not be risked for the rest of this match, the Storm need to have his injured shoulder looked at,” Fox League sideline reporter Lara Pitt said.

“He’s with the physio in the sheds, the club telling me he simply had no strength in that shoulder, there were concerns he dislocated it in contact but it popped straight back in, so he’s going to have some scans tomorrow.”

Fox League caller Dan Ginnane said the injury could have huge implications on the finals.

“That is huge what happens there, they’ve got Penrith next week. Brisbane at Suncorp, the Roosters down here in Melbourne and then Parramatta,” Ginnane said.

“That is a brutal finish and top four is obviously no guarantee. It’s becoming a survival of the fittest this NRL (season).”

Veteran goalkeeper Danny Vukovic’s bid for regular first-team football to secure a spot in the Socceroos’ World Cup squad has brought him back to the A-League.

The win featured a try of the season contender and moved the Eels above the Broncos into fifth on the ladder with four rounds remaining.

The Eels burst out of the blocks with winger Maika Sivo scoring two tries in the opening eight minutes to stun a pumping home crowd.

Sivo crossed untouched for both tries and with Mitchell Moses sidelined the kicking duties fell to Clint Gutherson who missed the conversions.

But Manly then scored 14 unanswered points as the sides went into halftime all locked up at 14-14.

The Sea Eagles hit back against the run of play when Daly Cherry-Evans put in a kick for Toluatau Koula to fly above the pack and score in the 20th minute.

Manly then slotted a penalty to draw level, before Jason Saab finished sensationally in the corner and Reuben Garrick converted to make it 14-8.

“What an amazing turnaround after all the pressure the Eels put them under,” Greg Alexander said on Fox League.

Parramatta center Tom Opacic finished a well-worked team try in the 33rd minute to lock the scores back up.

Manly struck first in the second half when Christian Tuipulotu burrowed his way over in the corner.

Garrick slotted a penalty in front of the sticks in the 54th minute to make it 20-14 before Eels winger Waqa Blake scored an incredible try.

Blake used every inch available to him to produce one of the best finishes of the season over the top of Morgan Harper.

“That’s an incredible try, he brought the ball well above his head, he was smashed by morgan harper but he still gets the ball down in that corner,” Alexander said.

“He is a blade of grass in from touch in goal,” Voss replied.

Eels skipper Clint Gutherson then scored from long-range after Shaun Lane broke the line and off-loaded to his skipper who raced away.

McLaren set to end Ricciardo’s 2023 F1 deal to make way for Piastri

Ricciardo has a signed McLaren contract for next season as part of the original three-year deal that he signed in early 2020, while still at Renault.

Ricciardo and the team will now have to agree to a settlement involving a substantial pay-off in order for him to walk away at the end of this season.

He is understood to have no interest in moving sideways into the team’s Formula E programme, and is determined to find another seat in F1.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy pleaded with the MRC in the post-match press conference to ignore the reports, hoping his star utility remains on the field.

“I just hope it gets judged on the tackle, not some of the hysteria that has gone on this week,” Bellamy said.

“We watched it in full speed live, Brandon Smith is just making the tackle and he falls off the tackle and the fact Tino went on that out line dragged Brandon Smith along with him,” Parker said.

“When you slow it all down to the enth degree like we do it doesn’t look great, but he’s just hanging on.

“If you don’t want to end up in that position then Brandon Smith has to let go of the tackle, otherwise what does he do, it’s a complete accident.

“I don’t see it as a genuine hip drop like we saw with Pat Carrigan last week. If he’s not to end up in that position, he needs to let go which completely goes against everything we talk about in rugby league.

Ennis agreed with Parker but said the tackle would be a “big concern” for the Storm.

“All the talk this week was two players holding the man up then that third tackler coming in and showing no duty of care, I don’t like the position that Tino gets in at the end but I’m not sure what else Brandon Smith could do there other than let go of the tackle,” Ennis said.

“Do we put that down to the duty of care? Is that where we’re going? Maybe we have to, where we’re eliminating players from getting in that position.

“That was a real difficult one, he just ended up in that unfortunate position Brandon Smith and I’m not sure what else he could have done.”

Following last week’s 73-point victory over the GIANTS, McDonald comes into the line up while Joel Amartey (omitted) and Josh Kennedy (medi-sub) are omissions this week.

“He has gone back for a weeks and has been working hard. As we always knew, he goes about it with the right attitude and comes back into the senior team with another opportunity which is great to see,” said senior coach John Longmire of McDonald’s return.

“We know there are some players playing well in our VFL team and that it is important to keep going but our senior team has been striving for that consistency all season, and we are still striving for that so it’s another opportunity this Sunday against the Kangaroos.

Longmire said he had been impressed by the side’s constant desire to improve and focus on the next challenge.

“The fact is we are always looking forward to our next challenge all the time, whether it is the next quarter or the next game,” Longmire said.

“The ability to recognize what we do well, things we can improve upon and move onto the next challenge and that has been the same again this week.

“The stoppage game of the Kangaroos is very high so we have to make sure we are on top of that,” Longmire added.

“When we are playing well, it’s everyone contributing and a weight of numbers performance so we after that again this week across the whole playing group.”

The match against the Kangaroos will be broadcast live nationally on Fox Footy and Kayo, and on 7mate in NSW and the ACT.

With Klemmer back on deck, the focus now shifts to Ponga’s return. Ponga consulted with Dr Chris Levi – a neurologist who has treated Boyd Cordner, Tim Glasby and many other NRL players after repeated head knocks – after coming from the field five times this year for head injury assessments.

On three of those occasions, most recently after a collision with Rooster prop Matt Lodge last month – he did not return to the fray.

Levi didn’t want to speak specifically about Ponga’s situation, citing doctor-patient confidentiality. However, he said that players who have typically had that number of head knocks generally need six to eight weeks to recover.

“In general situations of multiple concussion occurrences, longer periods of about six to eight weeks are recommended,” Levi told the herald.

“There is huge variability in the severity of concussions. A lot of the variability comes down to the individual’s resilience and the clinical recoveries.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation.”

That timeframe effectively rules Put out for the rest of the NRL season, but could result in him being available for the World Cup if he doesn’t show post-concussive symptoms.

Told that Ponga was back training with his teammates, Levi said it was a positive.

Medal tally, schedule, day eight, Australia gold medals, times, Michelle Jenneke, athletics, Australians in action

LIVE — Australians will compete for gold medals in at least seven events on day eight of the Commonwealth Games as the nation aims to hold off hosts England in Birmingham.

Australia heads into Friday’s competition sitting on top of the medal tally with 51 golds — nine more than England — as well as 42 silver and 39 bronze.

And it could be plenty more by the close of the day with at least three medals on offer in athletics, two in diving, and one each in lawn bowls and artistic gymnastics.

DAY 7 WRAP: Gold medal Aussie’s all-time interview gatecrashed; star ‘gutted’ after costly error

Australians are also in the hunt for wrestling medals in the women’s 57kg (Irene Symeonidis), men’s 65kg (Mustafa Rezaeifar), and men’s 86kg (Jayden Lawrence), starting with the quarterfinals stages from 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Cedric Dubler headed into the final day of the decathlon sitting in second.

Dubler then won the first decathlon event for the night, the 110m hurdles, with a time of 14.20 — good enough for another 949 points. That has moved him one point into the lead over Lindon Victor.

Also in athletics, Jess Hull will compete in the 1500m heats, while Brooke Buschkuehl will be in action in qualifying for long jump.

Celeste Mucci ran a strong 100m hurdles heat, matching her personal best time of 12.96, which saw her finish third.

Comeback star Michelle Jenneke was up next and comfortably finished second with a time of 12.63 to go through to the end on Sunday night. The time is the fastest she’s ever run the event, although it does not count as an official PB due to big tailwinds.

In the 1500m women’s heats, Abbey Caldwell and Linden Hall have progressed to the final after finishing inside the top four of their race with times of 4:13.59 and 4:14.08 respectively.

Away from the track, Australia’s Hockeyroos will have the chance to win a guaranteed medal when they take on India in the semi-final.

MMA world slams ex-UFC star for 'soccer kicking' knocked out opponent in the face

Mixed Martial Arts fans smoked at fighter Daichi Abe after he landed a brutal soccer kick on his already knocked out opponent.

The former UFC welterweight flatlined Brazilian Marcos Yoshio de Souza in the second round of their 176lb showdown at RIZIN 37 late last month, The Sun reports.

Abe shut De Souza’s lights off with a picture-perfect one-two in the second round of their showdown at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

De Souza crumpled to the canvas after the right hand connected and lay flat on his back unconscious.

But Abe didn’t stop there, launching into and landing a brutal soccer kick straight on the fallen and defenceless De Souza.

And fight fans were far from happy with the sickening strike.

One tweeted: “Soccer kick def uncalled for. Guy should be ashamed.”

Another said: “I’m all for soccer kicks, but IDK about when the dude is already f***ing knocked out.”

And another said: “Unfortunately… this is legal.”

Soccer kicks are illegal in most MMA promotions across the world including the UFC, which has adopted the unified rules of the sport.

But the sickening strikes — as well as knees to the head of a downed opponent — are legal in Asian-based fight promotions ONE Championship and RIZIN.

Several fans, however, have called for the strikes to be allowed in all promotions.

One fan said: “Best rule set in MMA.”

Another said: “MMA needs soccer kicks and knees to a downed opponent. The Unified MMA rules is garbage.”

Victory over De Souza saw 30-year-old Abe move to 5-1 in his last six outings.
