Three things with Peter Helliar: ‘I genuinely find a piece of exciting white paper’ | australian lifestyle

Yof you’ve turned on a TV any time in the past 20 years, odds are you’ve seen Peter Helliar. The comedian cut his teeth on Rove in the noughties and is now one of the hosts of Network Ten’s The Project, a chair he’s sat in for the past eight years. But for his latest venture he Helliar is trading the small screen for the sound studio. He recently began hosting Family Feud: The Podcast, an audio version of the gameshow of the same name. On every episode, two prominent Australians go head-to-head, with names such as Waleed Aly, Tony Armstrong and Osher Günsberg all battling it out for glory.

Crucial to Helliar’s many jobs are the notebooks in which he writes his ideas. In fact, notebooks of all kinds are cherished items to the media personality – he’s held on to the books he “self-published” as a kid and still aches for a notebook he once lost overseas. Here, he tells us why these journals become more valuable the more you use them.

What I’d save from my house in a fire

I would save the books I wrote when I was in primary school. I started my very own publishing company called Better Books. They were stapled pages with badly drawn pictures complete with grammatical errors and huge narrative potholes. I feel a connection with my school-age self through these books, which my mum kept in our garage all these years. All my influences are in there: Star Wars, Back to The Future, Indiana Jones, friends and sport – one story has me winning the 1986 Davis Cup by serving a hand grenade to Stefan Edberg.

Buried Alive by Peter Helliar: one of the comedian's childhood literary excursions under his primary school imprint.
Buried Alive by Peter Helliar: one of the comedian’s childhood literary excursions under his primary school imprint.

These books were not only my gateway to writing but also performing, as I would read them to the class and feed off their laughter. There is also a weirdly grim book called Buried Alive, which only as an adult I’ve come to understand was a reaction to losing my cousin, Matthew, to leukemia.

My most useful object

My most useful items are pens and notebooks. Yes, I use my laptop and will often rely on my notes app to jot ideas down, but I have always loved the endless possibilities that a blank page presents. I genuinely find a piece of white paper exciting. I make sure I write with a pen quite often as my brain seems to work a little differently when I do.

Whenever I begin working on a new standup show, I always buy a new distinctive notebook and I carry that around with me wherever I go, which is dangerous (see below). My wife, Brij, is always on me for the amount of notebooks I have and my refusal to throw any of them out. I’m not sure if I’m being silly for not tossing some of them, but there have been enough times when I look into an old notebook and rediscover a seed of an idea that I can now grow into something more substantial. That’s my excuse anyway and I’m sticking with it.

The item I most regret losing

I traveled overseas by myself when I was 18. I spent time in Scandinavia, the UK and (briefly) Germany for Oktoberfest. When I was in the UK, I decided that I would try to stand up. I bought a notebook and began writing ideas for routines and jokes. Notebooks are funny in that the more you write in them, the more valuable they become to you. I ended up coming home earlier than I thought I would, so I never tried standup in London – but I continued to write ideas and more jokes.

A couple of years later I met up with a mate for lunch and a couple of drinks. I took my notebook because I thought if he left me waiting I could people-watch and write down my observations. By now you have probably guessed what happened: I left the notebook in the back of a taxi. I was devastated. That notebook represented my future. All those amazing thoughts, genius ideas and killer punchlines.

Of course, I eventually got over it and began a standup career, which has gone pretty well. I also got to the stage where the gags and routines in there were probably amateurish and not as groundbreaking as they were in my head at the time. With that said, it would be nice to flick through and see what my first foray into writing comedy was like.

Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins looks almost unrecognizable in resurfaced Ralph magazine cover

An image of Jennifer Hawkins looking barely recognizable at the beginning of her modeling career has left fans scratching their heads.

This week, an image of Jennifer’s 2004 Ralph magazine cover resurfaced on Instagram influencer watchdog account Celeb Spellcheck.

The racy photo was taken months after Jennifer won the prestigious Miss Universe pageant, and showed the blonde posing suggestively in a skimpy red bikini.

Many users commented on just how different Jennifer looked, with one writing: ‘Wow Jen Hawkins is unrecognizable!’

‘It doesn’t even look like her’, another user agreed, while someone else added: ‘There is no way that’s Jennifer Hawkins – really?!’

At the time of her Ralph photo shoot, Jennifer sported pencil-thin eyebrows and had much thinner-looking lips.

She has since adopted a fuller, more natural-looking eyebrow style and now sports a noticeably fuller pout – perhaps thanks to clever makeup techniques.

Jennifer has been the subject of plastic surgery rumors for years, but has never discussed whether she’s gone under the knife.

In 2018, Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Randal Haworth offered his expert opinion on Jennifers’ evolving look, telling Daily Mail Australia at the time: ‘I often see pretty girls like Jennifer wanting to fine-tune their features to enter ‘supermodel’ territory .’

According to Dr. Haworth, who has not treated Jennifer himself, she has invested in some minor improvements to ‘improve facial balance as a whole’.

‘Most people would scratch their heads as to how a former Miss Universe could possibly improve upon her already-idolized face,’ he said.

‘Her new and more glamorous appearance has been helped by a rhinoplasty to refine and elevate her nasal tip while narrowing her asymmetrical nasal bones.’

Despite being a household name for more than 15 years, Jennifer has hardly aged a day and is arguably more beautiful now than she was in her early twenties.

Dr. Haworth believes that the former Myer ambassador has indulged in ‘fillers to her cheeks and other areas of her face’, as well as Botox.

‘I strongly suspect she also underwent lip augmentation for added sensuality and improved facial balance as a whole,’ he added.

In 2010, Jennifer attributed her drastic change in appearance to healthy eating, exercise and makeup.

‘Women get better with age, because they are more confident with themselves. It’s all about makeup and health,’ she said on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

Jennifer has previously danced around the topic of plastic surgery when quizzed on her age-defying looks.

In 2014 she told The Australian Women’s Weekly that it was the nature of the fashion industry to be accused of having cosmetic surgery.

‘When someone says ‘under the knife’ I don’t have a reaction,’ she said.

‘Everyone in the industry gets that. That’s fine. I’m cool with that. I’m cool with people having an opinion, but as I said, I am happy with who I am as a person and really just want to live my life.’

In 2016, the former Australia’s Next Top Model judge claimed it was a personal choice if people wanted to invest in plastic surgery.

Meghan Trainor details gross toilet habit with husband Daryl Sabara

Meghan Trainor is putting an end to this toilet humor rumour.

Yes, the All About That Bass singer and actor husband Daryl Sabara have commodes stationed side-by-side – but contrary to viral reports, she can’t stomach going No. 2 next to him.

The 28-year-old singer-songwriter recently revealed on the Pretty Basic with Alisha Marie and Remi Cruz podcast how her home bathroom situation really works with the Spy Kids star, 30.

“He’ll hang out with me while I poop. It was just, I ca n’t take his poops from him. Sorry, Daryl,” Trainor said. “Like, man poops are a different f***ing level. But my poops don’t smell.”

While the couple doesn’t do number two together, they still use the bathroom together “every day”.

“It’s the best part. We hold hands, we pee,” she said. “He sits while he pees, which he’s mad that I told the world that too. It’s easy, he’s tired, he’s a dad.”

In 2021, Trainor reported that she and Sabara like to use their double toilets in tandem. As she first explained on the Why Won’t You Date Me? podcast last year: “We just got a new house, and we did construction.”

She continued, “Nobody knows this, but in our bathroom, there was one toilet, and a lot of time in the middle of the night when we’re with the baby, we’ve got to pee at the same time. So I was like, ‘Can we please have two toilets next to each other?’”

“We got two toilets sitting next to each other, and we’ve only pooped together twice,” she went on, adding, “We pee at the same time a lot.”

After the musician’s statements went viral, she clarified her thoughts on Twitter last October.

“To clear things up… we pooped ONCE together and we laughed and said never again,” she wrote at the time. “But he will hang out with me if I’m [poop emoji]-ing cuz WE SOULMATES. And i legit miss him when I’m away from him.”

She ended the tweet by saying, “We pee together obviously.”

Hunted Australia finale: Stathi and Rob win the $100,000

The first season of Ten’s new reality game show hunted came to a close on Tuesday night, with contestants Stathi and Rob taking out a double win – earning half each of the game’s $100,000 prize money.

Speaking to news.com.au today, the two players opened up about their time on the show, revealing that life on the run was even harder than it appeared to viewers, with some key scenes not making the edit.

Namely, the apparent willingness of members of the general public to help panicked contestants, sometimes dressed in bizarre disguises and always trailed by camera operators, as they approached and announced: “I’M A FUGITIVE ON THE RUN, CAN YOU HELP ME?”
Time and again, complete strangers were shown on-screen leaping into action, housing, transporting and feeding the fugitives – but the winners explained they actually experienced very little kindness from those they approached.

“Not a single person wanted to help you, when you’re out on the streets looking for help,” said Rob. “People would just look at you. You’d think that having a camera with you would help, but it didn’t.”

Rob estimated that around “90% of people” he and team mate Jake approached on the run would “tell us to piss off” – starting from their first minutes in the game, when they needed to find a phone to make their first call.

“From the moment we got out at Federation Square, (hunted) didn’t show the 30 or so people who said no to letting us use their phones,” he explained.

Stathi said begging a largely indifferent public for help quickly became one of the hardest elements of his 21 days as a fugitive.

“That rejection… it makes you doubt yourself and gets you into that paranoid mindset, which is exactly what you don’t need when you’re on the run,” he said.

How the finale played out

Three contestants were left in the game heading into Tuesday’s season finale: friends Jake and Rob, and Stathi, who lost his buddy and team mate Matt during Monday’s episode.

All three had to phone Hunted HQ 24 hours before the 21 days were up to be told the game’s ‘extraction point’ in Inverloch, on Victoria’s south eastern coast.

As soon as they called, their exact location was disclosed to the Hunters – yet another advantage for the Hunters, and one that some viewers decried as unfair.

Policeman Jake was soon tracked down to the address he was staying, leading to a dramatic foot race between he and two Hunters, who eventually captured him.

It was left to make-up artist Rob and humanitarian worker Stathi to make their way to the extraction point: a helicopter that had landed on the beach in Inverloch.

Both did so as stealthily as possible, with Stathi blending in with some local hikers as he made the approach along a coastal track, while Rob raced straight into the chopper from the car that had just dropped him off.

Both made it into the chopper with minutes to spare and with Hunters hot on their tail – making them the joint winners of huntedseason one.

Rob and Stathi revealed to news.com.au today that their helicopter rendevzous was the first time they’d properly met and been able to have a conversation – and Rob did joke that, as first to the chopper, he was tempted to ask the pilot to leave when he saw Stathi approaching.

Both players vowed to share their split of the $100,000 prize money with their fallen team mates, meaning both winners will go home with $25,000 for their 21 days on the run.

It’s a small prize, compared to the megabucks awarded to winners on other Ten reality shows like Australian Survivor ($500,000) and Amazing Race Australia ($250,000).

Truth about those drag disguises

Monday’s penultimate episode of the season saw Jake and Rob don elaborate drag disguises to evade detection from the Hunters – a tactic Rob employed again for the finale (although this time, the Hunters clocked his real identity on CCTV).

Rob said it wasn’t any easy move to make, admitting he was “terrified” the first time he stepped out in public in drag.

“It was a huge, huge thing to do. I had this sense of nerves, going out in public like that… I also didn’t want to misrepresent anyone either, dressed as a woman.”

Hairdresser Rob dressed himself and policeman Jake in wigs, make-up, breast plates and even facial prosthetics to transform into women for a visit to a local pub, where they successfully convinced members of the public to take them in for the night.

It was far and away the most elaborate disguise in a season that saw contestants try to go undercover in an array of cheap wigs, op shop dresses and in one occasion, even a nun’s habit. Then there was Stathi’s infamous “nonna” disguise – or, as he put it to news.com.au, “K Mart drag.”

602,000 viewers across the five metro capitals tuned in to the climax of last night’s finale – a respectable end for a season that opened three weeks ago to an audience of 619,000, then rose to a season high of 711,000 viewers for episode two.

‘Eternals’ Enthusiasts Still Stung by the Movie’s Critical Reception

eternals

One of the most ballsy moves by the multibillion-dollar franchise that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe was greenlighting Eternals, a truly unknown comic book series. The film didn’t perform spectacularly, but fans are still wounded up by its poor reception.

Released to a middling 53 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the poorest reviewed film of the entire MCU, Eternals has struggled for recognition within its own universe, let alone from critics or fans. Despite definitely having some good ideas, it’s fair to say the average theatergoer didn’t get much out of it.

Fans are wondering why, with many taking up arms to defend the film on the Marvel Studios subreddit.

Some of the defenders do seem to preface their defenses by saying “it wasn’t amazing” but “good enough”. Curiously, one commenter believes the flip-flop reception is because Chloe Zhao’s involvement with her is not being sold correctly to audiences. calling Eternals “Too artsy” is rather humorous though.

On the other side though, critics of the film have boldly said that just because something is different, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. Bit of an essay here, but well articulated. Comparing it to batman v superman though, that’s a ballsy thing to say.

Others are still utterly baffled by Harry Styles showing up in the film as Thanos’s brother, but somehow not being purple. Something has gone very wrong there.

Eternals wasn’t without good ideas though, and fans do appreciate the new ideas, albeit not everything sticks. Ten characters being introduced in the film perhaps wasn’t the cleanest idea. Did people seriously understand all the Eternals and their personalities by the end of the film?

Eternals is currently available to stream on Disney Plus.

Nope, Bullet Train, The Princess, Crimes of the Future, Good Luck to You Leo Grande

August doldrums: too early for summer releases, too late for winter pleasures. This time of year often sees distributors clearing out the cupboards, getting ready for the big releases of summer, but COVID-19 and new release platforms have scrambled the eggs.

There are one or two big movies this month, such as Bullet Train – a Brad Pitt action-comedy – but much more that is quirky and oddball. David Cronenberg and Jordan Peele are both back in the ring, so anything can happen.

Let the winds of August guide you. Or just read on.

Find out the next TV, streaming series and movies to add to your must-sees. Get The Watchlist delivered every Thursday.

Bullet Train

Brad Pitt and four other hired killers board the same train from Tokyo to Kyoto, gunning for the same briefcase. This promises silly fun, loads of action, cartoonish violence and some laughs. Brad wants to get out of life; Sandra Bullock plays his handler for him. It’s directed by David Leitch, who made Dead Pool 2 and used to be Pitt’s stunt double. Opens August 4.

juniper

Juniper as in gin. The luminous and ever-surprising Charlotte Rampling plays a once-famous photographer, now a committed lush with a gammy leg. Her wayward nephew of her (George Ferrier) is sent to take care of her. Written and directed by Matthew Saville, this British film looks interesting. Rampling is never disappointing. Opens August 4.

nope

Jordan Peele’s new film has split American critics down the middle. Either it’s brilliant and original, or an inconsistent mess. A brother and sister (Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer) take up their father’s ranch in the desert after his mysterious death. Pretty soon they are pointing cameras at the sky, trying to get proof of visitors from another world. These aliens don’t look friendly. Opens August 11.

Conference

It is hard to imagine how you could make a satisfying film about the Wannsee Conference, where key Nazis meet in a villa outside Berlin to plan the extermination of the Jews, but East German-born director Matti Geschonneck has given it a shot. This looks to be rigorous and unsentimental, a reckoning with the uncomfortable truth that it took a great deal of planning to kill so many people. Opens August 11.

princess

Some critics are already calling this the definitive documentary on Princess Diana. Ed Perkins uses the currently popular technique of pastiche, pasting it all together using only actuality, which has its strengths and weaknesses. Absolutely certain is that it will be compelling viewing. Media types may experience discomfort. Opens August 11.

Bosch & Rockit

An Australian film, shot around Byron Bay, with Luke Hemsworth as a surfer on the run for dope dealing. Rasmus King plays Rockit, his are from him. The lovely Isabel Lucas is part of the attraction; she chooses interesting scripts. Director Tyler Atkins is on debut. Worth a look. Opens August 18.

Crimes of the Future

Léa Seydoux, Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart in Crimes of the Future.

After an eight year break, David Cronenberg returns with a sensational cast: Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. There will be blood and probably entrails, piercings, body parts, plus a wealth of ideas to keep us guessing. Cronenberg is often disgusting, but never boring. Bring a paper bag. Opens August 18.

Good luck to you, Leo Grande

This one stars Emma Thompson – what more do you need to know? Oh alright, she hires a beautiful sex worker (Daryl McCormack) to refloat her boat from her. Be warned: Thompson goes full frontal here, which she says was one of the hardest things she has ever done in her professional life. Should be funny. Opens August 18.

hit the road

A road movie from Iran that won a lot of hearts when it was screened at Cannes. From writer-director Panah Panahi, it follows a family through stunning landscapes and various challenges. Making movies in Iran has never been easy, given how often the regime imprisons its directors, but so many of the films are memorable and worth supporting. Opens August 25.

Fire of Love

Werner Herzog made a documentary in 2016 about Catherine and Maurice Krafft, French volcanologists who died on a mountain in Japan in 1991. This new film is based heavily on their own footage of active volcanoes, obtained at great risk, during their bewilderingly dangerous careers. Advance reports are very positive. Opens August 25.

Chris Rock Responds To Will Smith’s Apology During Stand-Up Routine

Comedian Chris Rock has reportedly responded to Will Smith’s new apology, albeit indirectly, during an on stage performance in New Jersey.

“If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims,” Rock said. “Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith… I went to work the next day, I got kids,” he said, according to CNN.

He later added: “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face”.

Smith recently released a five-minute direct to camera video where he apologizes for charging the Oscars stage earlier this year and slapping Rock — who was hosting the ceremony at the time — after he made a G.I. Jane joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia.

“Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down, so it hurts me psychologically and emotionally that I didn’t live up to peoples’ image and impression of me,” Smith said in the video.

“The work I am trying to do is — I am deeply remorseful and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself. I’m human and I made a mistake and I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of shit.

“So I would say to those people, I know it was confusing. I know it was shocking. But I promise you, I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world.”

He added that he had reached out to Rock, but the comic wasn’t keen to talk. “I will say to you Chris, I apologize to you”, he said. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Demi Lovato changes pronouns back to ‘she/her’ one year after coming out as non-binary

Demi lovato is using “she/her” pronouns again.

The 29-year-old singer – who notably came out as non-binary one year ago, and at the time said she would prefer to go by “they/them” – said she decided to change her pronouns back because she is “such a fluid person.” Lovato also said her previous adoption of “they / them” was a reflection of her de ella energy at the time, which she said was “balanced in my masculine and feminine energy.”

“When I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said ‘women’ and ‘men,’ I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t necessarily feel like a woman,” the ‘ Sorry Not Sorry’ singer shared on the Spout podcast this week. Listen above.

“I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human,” she continued of her feelings last year, saying changing her preferred pronouns to “they/them” initially was, for her, “feeling human at your core. “

“Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted ‘she/her’ again,” she continued on the podcast. “But I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect.”

“Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect,” she concluded.

It was in May 2021 when the Camp Rock star first announced she would be going by “they/them” pronouns due to being non-binary, an act she said came after “doing some healing and some reflective work.”

At the time, she said on her podcast 4D With Demi Lovato: “I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

Recently, however, Lovato’s followers noticed she had changed her Instagram bio to read “they/them/she/her” instead of “they/them,” and in April, she shared a series of photos to Instagram alongside the caption: “You call me they, but I’m still daddy’s girl…”

Lovato has been open about how the initial change of pronouns was “huge” for her, and that her gender identity is part of a journey that is evolving.

“If you misgender me – That’s okay,” she wrote in July last year in a now-deleted Instagram post. “I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!”

In August 2021, she also spoke out about how she may change her mind when it comes to her gender identity.

“There might be a time where I identify as trans,” Lovato said at the time. “I don’t know what this looks like for me. There might be a time where I identify as non-binary and gender-nonconforming my entire life.”

Maddie Ziegler hits red carpet in daring gown at Bullet Train premiere | Photos

Maddie Ziegler is not a little kid anymore.

The 19-year-old, who in recent years has transitioned to acting, walked the carpet alongside Brad Pitt for the upcoming David Leitch-directed thriller, which hits cinemas in Australia on Thursday.

She went on to forge a successful partnership with Sia, appearing alongside the singer on red carpets, during her tours and starring in several other music videos.

Her casting became a controversial topic, with the movie criticized for its “offensive depiction of autism.”

Ziegler addressed the criticism in an interview with independent at the time, saying she understood the outcry.

“I’ve actually stayed out of all of it just because, you know, I’m 18 years old and it’s a lot of pressure … (But) I understand why people would want someone who’s actually on the spectrum with autism to play this character.

“But in terms of the dance sequences, I think that’s why Sia chose me to bring the dream world to life. It was all [made] with good intentions and with a good heart.”

Elsewhere on the Bullet Train red carpet, fellow former child star Joey King, who stars in the film, also rocked a plunging gown.

The 23-year-old kissing booth stars plays British assassin Prince in the action film, which also stars Sandra Bullock.

Major influencer bust-up between Sophie Cachia and Mia Plecic as they cut business ties

Two of Australia’s most controversial influencers have reportedly cut business ties following a string of public relations gaffes.

Mummy blogger Sophie Cachia and haircare entrepreneur Mia Plecic announced last year they were launching a ‘gender-neutral’ cosmetics brand together called Aisuru.

Cachia, a former footy WAG who famously left her husband and became engaged to a woman in 2020, previously found success with her eponymous pajamas brand and multimedia company Shaw Media.

Mia is known for her multimillion-dollar hair products company, Slick Hair Co.

But this week, Cachia announced that Aisuru was now ‘a one-woman show’, apparently confirming Plecic had left the business.

Outspoken the Podcast, which documents the misadventures of social media stars, speculated this week that the pair’s friendship had also broken down.

Tellingly, Plecic has removed all references to Aisuru from her social media bio and also unfollowed the brand on Instagram.

The former business partners have also unfollowed each other’s personal accounts.

Plecic has since released a statement to Daily Mail Australia that seemingly contradicts Cachia’s claim about Aisuru being a ‘one-woman show’.

Aisuru has been plagued by controversy since its launch earlier this year.

The hosts of Outspoken, sisters Amy, Sophie and Kate Taeuber, also speculated this week that Plecic’s controversial views on Covid-19 and vaccine mandates possibly drove a wedge between the business partners.
