Disability activist Hannah Diviney trolled for calling out ableist slur in Beyonce lyrics

An Australian disability advocate has revealed she has been subject to relentless trolling after calling out Beyoncé for using an ableist slur in a newly released song.

It is not the first time Hannah Diviney has called out a star for their use of the word “sp*z” in a song.

Last month, Diviney tweeted Lizzo telling her to “do better” and she did, by changing the lyrics in her new song GRRRLS and apologizing.

Then last week, Beyonce released the track heated on her renaissance album, prompting Diviney to speak up again. The singer also changed the lyrics in her song following backlash.

After calling out the 28-time Grammy winner, Diviney said her Twitter mentions – tweets from users tagging her – became a “dumpster fire” and she wished other people would have as been as open to learning as Beyonce and Lizzo.

“I really respect Beyonce and Lizzo for apologizing,” she said, speaking on ABC’s Q&A program on Thursday night.

“I think that’s a great move because I think we have definitely seen it before when celebrities do that whole ‘I’m going to double down, that’s not what I meant, you just took it the wrong way blah blah’ and both of these women who, it has to be said, occupy incredible spaces as marginalized people themselves, have shown everyone around the world how to be an effective ally.

“And that’s basically be open to learning, go ‘OK cool, I did something wrong, now I’m going to just fix it and we’re not going to make a huge fuss about it.’

“I just wish people who are really passionate about the fact Beyonce and Lizzo had to change the lyrics in their song would get that message,” Diviney continued.

“I actually debated or not whether to bring this up because I have a lot of people that I care about watching and people who care about me and they don’t quite know the level of trolling I’ve got this week.

“But I have had I have had people basically sending me photos of, or like GIFs of, people in wheelchairs being falling over and people in wheelchairs being pushed off cliffs … which is basically telling me to ‘shut up and go away.’”

Diviney said it would not stop her, vowing to continue calling out any use of the word.

“That particular word has been used against me before as an insult and is especially being used against me now,” she said.

“It’s being used against people I care about and it presumes a lack of intelligence or emotional control, which are not at all things that I want associated with me, things I want associated with my disability. They don’t reflect on my life at all.

“Trust me, if people had actually lived with spasticity I don’t think they’d be using that as an insult because it hurts.”

While Beyonce has not publicly addressed the backlash or lyrics, representatives for the singer told media the word was “not used intentionally in a harmful way” and would be replaced.

In June, Lizzo released a statement on Twitter apologizing for using the word.

“It’s been brought to my attention that there are [sic] is a harmful word in my song ‘GRRRLS’,” she wrote.

“Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language. As a fat black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me so I understand the power words can have (whether intentionally or in my case, unintentionally).

“I’m proud to say there’s a new version of girls with a lyric change. This is the result of me listening and taking action,” she continued.

“As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the challenge change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”

The secret war between ‘Bluey’ and anime fans

Iconic Aussie children’s cartoon Bluey has been bombarded with negative reviews in a targeted attack to bring down the beloved program’s online ratings, Reddit users have speculated.

Online sleuths have identified what they say is a secret war raging between anime fans and the children’s series on movie and TV website IMDb.

At the end of last month, bluey‘s executive director, Daley Pearson, tweeted a screenshot of an IMDb page that showed a bluey episode — titled “Sleepytime”, for all you fans — ranked second on the list of best TV shows of all time with a star rating of 10 out of 10.

I don’t even have kids and I love blueyso I find no fault here — however, a Reddit theory suggests that anime fans did.

A mere three days after Pearson sent out the tweet, the bluey episode dropped down the list to 17th place. The number of people rating the show increased by 700 during this time, and the star rating stats show that there was a sudden uptake in one-star ratings, making it the second most popular rating for the show. Seeing as the most popular rating is 10 stars, it’s looking pretty suspect.

At the same time, a popular anime series rose up from nowhere to the top spots. why? It seems the trolls got to it.

A Reddit thread of bluey fans (yes, that is a thing that exists) suggests anime fans saw the tweet and started to review the show badly, while at the same time rating their favorite shows well, for the sole purpose of getting their own favorites higher in the rankings.

Reddit was quick to point out that trolling is really the sincerest form of flattery the internet can provide.

“It’s a badge of honor really,” wrote one user. “Anything starts to get haters once it gets enough elevation. The fact that it’s getting review bombed, the silly recent attacking articles – all just testament to how good this show is that’s it’s hit that level. And that it’s a kids show makes this all more amazing.”

Others have suggested that this could be the start of an all-out war between fans of a kids’ show and of anime.

“If it HAS to come to this, then I HOPE us in the bluey fandom can make a rebellion over the anime fans,” said one bluey supporter.

“This might be one of the worse things we’ve done, but we shall bring upon war. If you want to contribute to attacking the Anime fandom than comment on this post and leave poor reviews on Attack on Titan!”

“Welcome to why so many anime fandoms are so toxic,” said another.

Yet no one summed up the situation so neatly as this Reddit user and bluey fan: “The internet is such a weird place.”

Victoria Beckham reportedly feuding with new daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz: ‘They can’t stand each other’

It seems there’s a feud brewing between victoria beckham and her new daughter-in-law, Nicholas Peltz.

According to Page Sixthe pair are no longer speaking as their relationship reportedly unraveled in the lead-up to Nicola’s $5 million wedding to Victoria and david beckham‘s are, brooklyn beckham this past April.

“They can’t stand each other and don’t talk,” a source told the outlet. “The build-up to the wedding was horrendous.”

The source said that in the months before Nicola and 23-year-old Brooklyn’s star-studded Miami wedding, the 27-year-old actress and her wealthy family – she is the daughter of billionaire Nelson Peltz – did not want Victoria “to be any part of the planning”. The source claimed that Nicola wouldn’t clue the former Spice Girl in on anything and “communication was minimal.”

Apparently, ever since the extravagant affair – which was held at the luxurious Peltz family estate – it’s been “non-stop petty drama” and the tension is coming between Beckhams and their son.

“They haven’t spoken to him much in the last few months,” said a source, adding that Brooklyn’s parents weren’t happy when on Instagram he posted a cover of Nicola gracing the cover of British magazine Tatler with the headline calling her ” The New Mrs. Beckham.”

Prior to the Page Six report, there was much speculation about the relationship between the Beckhams and the newly minted Peltz Beckhams. The Beckhams were always a tight-knit clan and they embraced Nicola into the fold when she and Brooklyn started dating in 2020.

The group posted sweet snaps of their vacations together and they were constantly gushing about each other and ‘liking’ each other’s social media posts.

But after the April nuptials, that all seemingly came to a halt.

READMORE: Concerns over TV host’s bizarre marriage claim

Speculation monsoon emerged that the feud stems from the treatment the Beckhams allegedly received from the wealthy Peltz family before and during the wedding.

According to the Mirror, Victoria and David and their three other children – Romeo, Cruz and Harper – were not invited to sit at the top table at the reception. Instead, the seats were taken up by Nicola’s billionaire father Nelson, fashion model mother Claudia Peltz and her siblings de ella.

“The top table was all Peltz’s and it really felt as though the Beckhams were not at the forefront,” a source told the outlet.

“There was a feeling that the wedding was all about the Peltz family, as you can imagine, as it was their house and their daughter and their son making the speeches.”

The film will see former joker director Todd Phillips return as director and co-writer alongside Scott Silver.

No other cast members have been released for the project.

But there is a clue in the film title.

Should I be content with my engagement? Suddenly I’m nervous | relationships

I am getting married soon to my partner of six years and all of a sudden I feel really nervous and unsure about it. I do love him but we started dating when we were very young and, although our thoughts and ideas align well as we have grown together, I still wonder if I could be better matched to someone else. I feel terrible for having these thoughts as I know he doesn’t. I know he will be an amazing husband and we can have a nice life together but I miss the passion of the early stages of a relationship.

A new co-worker has started at my workplace and we have had some flirtatious moments. It felt good to be seen in that way by someone else, however I wouldn’t dare take that further. But I get on really well with him and find myself wanting to talk to him all the time. I wonder if having conflicting thoughts like these is a bad sign. Shouldn’t I be completely content with my engagement and excited to marry someone I love?

Eleanor says: While “I do love him, but” isn’t ever quite what you want to say about your fiance, I think your question houses a subtle distinction. Does this discontent lie within the relationship itself, or in what the commitment represents? Is there anything wrong with your actuality – or are you simply grieving the loss of possibility?

That second kind of dissatisfaction, the loss of possibility, often envelops us in the lead-up to big commitments. Once we’ve settled on the big move, the career decision, the relationship milestone, a deflating sense of anticlimax can creep in. I think it’s because these moments mean our vision of how things might be starts to come into sharper resolution – we start to see how things really will be, and therefore, at the same time, what they won’t be. For every big choice we make we decline an alternative future. We say to ourselves that those doors are closed, and the versions of life that lie behind them will stay hushed and inanimate.

That can be hard to stomach. Especially for the choices that take us from youthful things to grown-up things, from freedom to responsibility; they can make us feel as though we’re running out of possibilities. Sometimes that’s why flirtations have such kerosene power in moments of life transition – before a marriage, in midlife. It’s not so much that we’re transfixed by that particular other person but that we’re transfixed by getting to see ourselves, briefly, the way they do – as an unknown, as someone who crackles with possibility.

It would be peculiar if you felt nothing like this as you approach your wedding. The whole point of getting married is that your life changes as a result. You promise to take another person’s wellbeing as seriously as your own. That’s a big decision about how your future looks (and how it doesn’t).

But, if you really love someone, what on the surface looks like a “loss of possibility” should in fact feel like the exact opposite. True, monogamous marriage means you turn down the possibility of a new relationship, or the thrill of chemistry with a stranger, but what you get instead is the vast breadth of future that opens up between people who want to make a life together.

When you really love each other, that seems expansive, not constraining. It makes you feel that there is more of you, and more of the world – more future; more possibility; more freedom – not less. This is one of the great mysteries of love and commitment – how we could, by taking on responsibilities to each other, come to feel more like ourselves.

Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning

If the alterations that marriage asks of you already seem unwelcome and constricting, that’s when I would want to pause. Your partner will not want a spouse who sees your union as a sacrifice – as something that robs you of the openness you long for.

You asked whether you should feel completely content and, while the answer to that is almost always no, it is important to distinguish between kinds of discontent. Losing any kind of possibility can leave a trail of melancholy. But if you can’t see the glow of different, exciting possibilities within your new commitment – that’s when it might be time to wonder.

Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton wears white suit by Alexander McQueen

The Duchess of Cambridge is inspiring our summer dressing for the second time this week, this time with the perfect seasonal suit.

Kate made an appearance at Sandwell Aquatics Center to watch the Commonwealth Games, accompanied by her husband the Duke of Cambridge and their daughter Princess Charlotte, wearing an elegant Alexander McQueen suit with a white tank top and Camilla Elphick pumps.

Kate has always been an advocate for re-wearing and this outing was no different; she previously wore the pumps to the polo earlier this summer, while the Alexander McQueen suit made an appearance during her royal tour of Jamaica in March, and then again on Windrush Day in June.

It’s also not the first time we’ve seen that particular jewellery: she first wore the Mappin & Webb ‘Empress’ earrings and necklace at Princess Charlotte’s Christening – a fitting tribute for her daughter’s first solo public engagement with her parents.

Over the weekend the royal inspired our summer daywear wardrobes, in a nautical-inspired look for a visit to Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth.

Kate opted for a classic Breton striped top, worn with tailored white Holland Cooper shorts, gold hoops, and her favorite white Superga trainers. Her style de ella is a constant reminder of how relying on capsule classics and finding your own signature style is key to achieving a chic wardrobe.

It’s little wonder she opts to rewear pieces from her wardrobe so regularly: timeless classics never go out of style.

The Block quitters Elle and Joel ‘hang up’ on Fitzy & Wippa

The Block ‘quitters’ Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull have remained dead silent amid questions about their exit from the renovation show after just 48 hours.

And in an attempt to finally hear their side of the story, Nova’s Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli cold-called the Sydney couple this week, but things didn’t quite go to plan.

The radio duo welcomed The Block host Scott Cam onto their show Thursday in the wake of his repeated public sprays at the Instagram influencer and retired AFL player, when Wippa told Cam they attempted to contact Elle and Joel the day before.

“We rang them yesterday, Scotty we can’t even play the audio because there isn’t anything to play,” Wippa said.

Fitzy further claimed, “Elle picked up the phone and said ‘This is Joel’s phone.’ And I said, ‘Hi Elle we’re looking for Joel, it’s Fitzy and Wippa here.’ And then Joel comes in and goes ‘Hi, how are you guys?’ And we introduced ourselves again and then bang, he was gone. I have hung up. He’s not a fan of [our] Show.”

Cam has been busy sledging the pair for throwing in the towel so quickly into filming, calling it “p*ss poor” and “unAustralian”, despite reports they left to care for Joel’s mother who’d suffered a Nasty fall in Adelaide.

Given the understandable circumstances, many have been wondering why Cam has hit out so passionately against them.

Speaking to news.com.au in the lead up to the Tree Change season premiere next week, the Channel 9 personality said his frustration stemmed from the couple upping sticks in the middle of the night with “no explanation.”

“They didn’t give us a reason why they were leaving. They never mentioned anything to us about visiting their sick mother,” Cam said.

“In fact, we flew them to Adelaide before The Block started for a week, and put them up in a hotel so they could see (Joel’s mother), and they came back and said ‘everything’s fine’.”

According to Cam, the cast and crew were stunned when Joel and Elle then disappeared.

“They never spoke to us, they just left in the middle of the night,” he said, adding: “I still don’t know why they left. They never mentioned their sick mother in the 48 hours before they left, or after they left. The executive producer spoke to them (after they left) and they didn’t mention their sick mother then either.”

Following up his comments on Fitz & WippaCam said the network would’ve “shut down production” to allow Elle and Joel to see their family.

“You know, come and talk to me and just tell me,” he said. “We would have sorted them out. Because a couple of years ago, Bec from Bec and George, great couple, contestants on The Block … Her mum passed away through the show and we shut the whole show down for a week.

“We brought them all back and we started again when she was ready, we would shut down for two weeks if she needed it.”

Cam revealed Elle and Joel did express some concerns with the executive producer just hours before fleeing, and that their sudden disappearance caused “chaos” on-set.

“We had a promo day that day. It was a Saturday morning, we had 50 or 60 people coming from Sydney. A whole crew with trucks and everything. And we’ve got two contestants missing,” he said.

“So we had to reshoot a lot of stuff, and it was really chaos.”

Elle and Joel are still yet to officially comment.
