Bullet Train is off the rails, even with the ‘mellow-yet-whiny’ Brad Pitt

There’s a generational cycle in cinema which is fairly invariable: Quentin Tarantino has famously spent his career riffing on the exploitation movies of his 1970s youth, and now Bullet Train Screenwriter Zak Olkewicz is riffing on Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, presumably equally formative experiences for a kid born in 1983.

There is nothing in Bullet Train to invest in emotionally, nor did I find it especially funny or thrilling.

It makes for a very talky journey, far from the non-stop thrill ride promised in the title, and only slightly briefer than the actual bullet train ride between the cities in question (you can make the trip in two hours and 15 minutes, according to toGoogle).

Moreover, most of the action has to unfold without the driver or the civilian passengers getting too suspicious, and thus has to happen in short, sharp, close-up bursts, rather than the flowing cadenzas of John Wick (which Leitch co-directed – still his career high point).

That Thomas the Tank Engine thing, by the way: it isn’t a one-off gag, it’s the primary, defining trait of Henry’s character, as if Samuel L. Jackson spent all his screen time in pulp fiction talking about the pig from Green Acres.

Quirks of this variety are meant to contrast with the cartoonish ruthlessness all the characters share, to the point where the decent sorts are the ones who aren’t literally pushing children off rooftops (a misdeed performed by a demure schoolgirl villainess, played by The Kissing Booth star Joey King in a baby-pink coat).

The trouble is that actual Japanese filmmakers are in a different league with this sort of stuff: Leitch is in no position to crank up the perversity and nihilism to match, say, Sion Sono, though he may well have seen a few Sono films in his time.

loading

There is nothing in Bullet Train to invest in emotionally, nor did I find it especially funny or thrilling. But I’m prepared to give Leitch and company a few points for trying something offbeat enough that by current Hollywood standards it practically qualifies as art for art’s sake.

It must have been Pitt’s enthusiasm that got it financed; Perhaps it reminded him of his 1990s glory days, when he must have spent a fair amount of time between projects leafing through screenplays about goofy hitmen.

Addison Rae removes Instagram photo of ‘blasphemous’ Adidas bikini

Addison Rae is courting controversy with her latest swimsuit snap.

As reported by Page Sixthe 21-year-old TikTok sensation shared a now-deleted Instagram photo of herself in Praying’s $A143 Holy Trinity Bikini, the top of which is printed with “Father” on one side and “Son” on the other.

While the image only captured Rae’s top half, the bottoms of the scandalous suit, which was created in collaboration with Adidas, reads “Holy Spirit” across the crotch.

While the He’s All That star’s famous friends gushed over the look – photographer Mark “The Cobrasnake” Hunter called it a “home run”, while Canadian singer Tate McRae wrote, “oh my god addison” – many commenters expressed their disapproval of the daring swim style.

“Nah this disrespectful to Jesus. Sad what y’all do for money,” one person wrote, while another added, “This is not okay! BLASPHEMY!”

“Is nobody gonna talk about this disrespecting religions,” a third wrote, while a fourth deemed the bikini “so messed up”.

Last weekend, Christina Aguilera posed on Instagram in the French version of the two-piece – printed with “Pere”, “Fils” and “Esprit Saint” – cheekily captioning her video, “A religious experience”.

The pop star’s post didn’t draw the same criticism as Rae’s, however; perhaps things got lost in translation?

A favorite of young stars including Olivia Rodrigo, Halsey and Maddison Beer in addition to Rae, Praying offers cheeky styles inspired by Y2K nostalgia. Popular pieces include a crop top that labels its wearer “God’s Favorite” and a shoulder bag that commemorates Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s decade-long love.

Rae has had a rough few weeks, following Page Six’s exclusive reveal that her 46-year-old father, Monty Lopez, allegedly “misled” a 25-year-old woman into a five-month affair.

Since then, she has canceled press appearances, and said she’s been “struggling” to process the news.

Millions are divided over chef’s unusual way to always get crispy bacon: ‘There’s no way this works’

Foodies are divided over chef’s VERY unusual ‘secret’ for crispy bacon every time: ‘There’s no way this works’

  • A top chef shared an unusual method that ensures bacon is perfectly crispy
  • Roice Bethel was a contestant on Gordon Ramsey’s tv show ‘Next Level Chef’
  • He revealed that he always boils his bacon on a cool pan when he wants it crispy
  • ‘The meat’s muscle cooks fast but fat takes a longer time to render well,’ he said
  • Water prevents the heat from getting too high and gives the meat time to render

A top chef has shared an unusual tip that ensures his bacon is perfectly crispy every time.

Roice Bethel, from California, was a contestant on the first season of Gordon Ramsey’s reality television show ‘Next Level Chef.’

‘If you want perfectly crispy bacon you have to boil it,’ he said in a now-viral TikTok.

‘I know that sounds like it wouldn’t work but it does.’

Will you be trying Roice’s method?

  • Yes, the bacon looks so crunchy! 54 votes
  • No, I’ve perfected cooking bacon 46 votes

Roice explained that in order to get the perfect strip of bacon, you have to pay attention to the meat’s composition.

‘So there’s two parts to every strip of bacon,’ he said.

‘There’s the muscle, which is the dark part – and the fat, which is the light part.’

The professional chef then revealed that muscle cooks extremely quickly but fat takes a much longer time to render well.

To remedy that problem, Roice puts his strips of bacon on a cool pan and pours just enough water over it to cover the meat.

‘The water prevents the temperature from getting too high which gives the meat enough time to render out,’ he said.

Roice added, ‘And so the meat and the fat finish cooking at the same time.’

He typically flips the bacon around until the water evaporates, at which point the meat is not overcooked or burned and the fat is rendered perfectly.

Millions were taken back by this simple hack, and could not believe they were let in on this trade secret.

‘I tried this trick in the morning and it was a game changer,’ said one woman.

‘I’ve been making my bacon like this for years – and it’s the best method I’ve ever come across.’

But others were not convinced.

‘You boiled out the best part of the bacon… the flavour!’

‘If you pour water all over your bacon it isn’t going to have a taste.’

Batgirl star Leslie Grace thanks fans, directors ‘shocked’ at movie’s axing

The directors of the scrapped Batgirl movie say they are shocked by the news their work won’t make it to screens.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah responded to the axing alongside star Leslie Grace who described the seven months of “hard work” that went into filming.

Warner Brothers opted to shelve the $90-million movie planned for subscription service HBO Max as the reorganized studio revamps its approach to streaming and DC Comic films.

The decision has sent shock waves through the industry with the directors and cast taking to social media to express their disappointment.

“We are saddened and shocked by the news. We still can’t believe it,” El Arbi and Fallah said in a statement posted online.

“As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences and, while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves.

“Maybe one day they will.”

The duo, best known for Bad Boys for Life and episodes of Ms Marvel, thanked their “amazing cast and crew” including Grace, who said they portrayed Batgirl with passion, dedication and humanity.

Grace, who previously starred in In the Heights, posted to social media a “thank you” to every Batgirl fan for their belief and allowing her to become her “own damn hero.”

“On the heels of the recent news about our movie Batgirl, I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over seven months in Scotland,” she said.

“I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process.”

The film’s production wrapped up in April but instead of making it to a streaming debut or cinemas, Warner Brothers decided to completely write off the film which was given the green light before the company’s merger with Discovery Inc.

Warner Brothers Discovery on Thursday reported its second-quarter 2022 earnings during a meeting in which a Deutsche Bank analyst asked CEO David Zaslav about the decision to kill the movie.

“This idea of expensive films going direct to screening, we can’t find an economic case for it,” Zaslav said.

“We can’t find an economic value for it so we’re making a strategic shift.”

Zaslav added Warner Brothers Discovery wasn’t going to put a movie out unless the company believed in it.

“We’re not going to release any film before it’s ready,” he said.

“We’re not going to release a film to make a quarter.”

An early cut of Batgirl had recently undergone one test screening.

While its scores weren’t good, poor test results aren’t rare for Warner Brothers.

The movie wasn’t as pricey as many superhero films, which typically cost $150-200 million to make, but it was a bigger budget movie for an HBO Max title.

Kyle Sandilands slams MKR’s Manu Feildel after they have a VERY heated interview on his radio show

Kyle Sandilands slammed My Kitchen Rules judge Manu Feildel on his radio show on Friday after the pair had a tense chat live on-air.

French chef Manu, 48, awkwardly said goodbye to Kyle, 51, after being grilled about his new co-host Nigella Lawson and why she didn’t want to do the interview with him.

After Kyle’s co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson mentioned how uncomfortable the interview was, Kyle blasted the culinary star, saying: ‘Who gives as**t what he’s sick and tired of talking about!’

Kyle then ranted about Manu promising that ‘no topic was off limits’ on their KIIS FM show.

‘I’m not here to facilitate other people’s s**t. I like Manu, he can come on and I like the show [MKR]but I’m very shocked about the Nigella [Lawson] thing.’

‘The end was very awkward, I wasn’t sure what was going on there guys? But whatever,’ Jackie O said.

‘What do you mean? I think he felt embarrassed by his co-host (Nigella) let him down, ‘Kyle shot back.

‘Or he’s sick of talking about it,’ Jackie said.

During the chat, Kyle wouldn’t stop probing Manu about why the British TV chef Nigella was a no-show.

‘What’s her problem, apparently I hear, correct me if I’m wrong producers, the network is upset because Nigella’s team said “no way, you’re not going on that filthy show.” Our show, how does that happen?’ Kyle asked.

‘I have no idea, that’s news to me buddy! I will make sure she talks to you next time,’ Manu said with a laugh.

‘How am I meant to support you when the woman besides you loathes the thought of me… you just wriggled out of that and made a false promise. I think she’s amazing, she’s the queen, but when you find out someone doesn’t like you, you can’t help but not like someone back,’ Kyle added.

‘I think you’re just being upset for no reason, Kyle,’ Manu said, keen to get off the subject.

Kyle said he thought Nigella was a ‘sweetie’ but isn’t a fan of her management team.

‘Can you sort her team out…’ Kyle asked Manu towards the end of the chat, which was greeted with awkward silence.

Nigella is joining Manu on the My Kitchen Rules reboot this year, replaced disgraced chef Pete Evans.

According to The Australian, she will only appear in half the episodes of the show.

The publication reported Nigella ‘will appear only for the first round of the show with Manu Feildel.’

Chef Matt Preston will then replace her for the second round, before Colin Fassnidge and Curtis Stone man the show’s finals.

Nigella’s scant appearance comes despite her ‘reputedly huge fee’ the publication reports.

Global home-cooking sensation Nigella is replacing disgraced Pete Evans, who was axed from the Seven network in 2020 amidst the show’s falling ratings in its then eleventh year of production.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Channel Seven and Nigella’s management team for comment, in relation to this story.

My Kitchen Rules returns to Seven on Sunday at 7pm.

Alastair Little Godfather Of British Cuisine Cause Of Death, Obituary, Age, Biography, Family, Restaurant, Recipes, Net Worth

Know the death reason of Alastair Little, his age, biography, family, net worth and recipes

The death of numerous greats, including “Top Chef” graduate Howard Kleinberg, cookbook author Diana Kennedy, and Di Fara creator Dom DeMarco, has shocked the culinary world barely over halfway through 2022. Sadly, adding to that loss, chef Alastair Little died at 72. The title “the grandfather of modern British food” was bestowed upon him in recognition of his achievements as a chef, restaurant proprietor, and cookbook author.

Alastair Little Godfather Of British Cuisine Cause Of Death, Obituary, Age, Biography, Family, Restaurant, Recipes And Net Worth

He started his culinary career in 1981 when he finally earned the position of chef at L’Escargot. In 1985, he and his ex-partner Kirsten Pedersen opened their first restaurant, which served as an aesthetic model for several subsequent modern London restaurants (boasting design elements like bare tables with paper napkins and a kitchen overlooking the dining room).

But one of the most innovative ideas was the twice-daily menu change. Little’s fundamental cooking philosophies contributed to the restaurant receiving raving reviews. According to Eater London, it was about “simplicity” for him.

Who Was Alastair Little?

The British chef, cookbook author, and restaurateur Alastair Little passed away on 2 August 2022 at 70. His eponymous Soho restaurant and multiple appearances on British television contributed to his rise to popularity in the 1980s. His daily-changing menus from him, which used seasonal ingredients, affected contemporary British eateries and various Alastair Little recipes.

His net worth stood at $2 million while his full recipes can be found here.

As of 1976, the Old Compton Wine Bar employed him. Little requested the position after the chef left. I have kept the menu simply because of his lack of professional experience. He recalled opening the refrigerator every morning to see what was inside before visiting the Soho butcher shops and little produce markets to do his shopping.

After spending two years in a restaurant in Wrentham, Suffolk, he made his way to Putney, and then, in 1981, he began working at L’Escargot in Soho. I have moved to 192 (Kensington Park Road), where I have established straightforward daily changing menus, a service concept that Sheila Dillon claims were “unheard of back then.

While waiting tables at 192, I encountered Kirsten Pedersen and Mercedes Andre-Vega. In October 1985, the three founded the Alastair Little eatery on Frith Street in Soho. According to The Independent, it was one of the first restaurants in Britain to bear its name.

The Chef Who Was Ahead Of His Time!

After Alastair Little unexpectedly passed away, his admirers and the food industry showered him with love (via Eater London). His food from him was amazing and unmatched. Exceptional, endearing, smart, a delight to cook with, a terrific inspiration, a good friend, and a fantastic boss—gone too soon, missed, and never forgotten.”

Alastair Little was an intelligent, articulate, and self-taught chef who helped shape generations of chefs and restaurateurs. The British food scene owes him so much; several expert chefs quote the same.

Melanie Lynskey claims she was brutally body-shamed on Coyote Ugly

New Zealand actress Melanie Lynskey has candidly recalled the body-shaming she and other actresses faced while filming the 2000 movie Coyote Ugly.

“All the girls had this regimen they had to go on. It was ridiculous,” the actress told The Hollywood Reporter. “I was already starving myself and as thin as I could possibly be for this body, and I was still a [size] four [Australian size eight].”

Lynskey, now 45, played Gloria, a woman who was the best friend of actress Piper Perabo’s lead character, Violet, in the movie.

Now the New Zealand actress has said she faced harsh criticism from the original costume designer, makeup artist and others while she was filming, new york post reports.

“There were already people putting a lot of Spanx on me in wardrobe fittings and being very disappointed when they saw me, the costume designer being like, ‘Nobody told me there would be girls like you,’” Lynskey said.

“Really intense feedback about my physicality, my body, people doing my makeup and being like, ‘I’m just going to help you out by giving you a bit more of a jawline and stuff.’ Just the feedback was constantly like, ‘You’re not beautiful. You’re not beautiful.’”

Lynskey later clarified that the costume designer credited on the movie was not the person she was referring to in her comments.

“The costume designer who initially worked on Coyote Ugly left for some reason, and a lovely kind woman named Marlene Stewart took over and she was AWESOME,” Lynskey tweeted on Wednesday.

“The first person was mean, the person credited was not,” she wrote. “And my answer was kind of a jumble – I had experiences with makeup artists offering to help my face look better but that did not happen on Coyote Ugly. The hair and makeup team were amazing and so kind and among the best I’ve ever worked with.”

But the body-shaming did not stop in the early 2000s.

In January, the Heavenly Creatures actress revealed that she faced a similar situation with a crew member while filming Showtime’s yellowjackets recently.

“They were asking me, ‘What do you plan to do? I’m sure the producers will get you a trainer. They’d love to help you with this,’” she told rolling stone.

The actress’ co-star Juliette Lewis found out about the interaction and wrote a letter to production on Lynskey’s behalf.

“I want women to be able to watch [Yellowjackets] and be like, ‘Wow, she looks like me and nobody’s saying she’s the fat one.’ That representation is important,” Lynskey concluded.

Meghan Markle birthday: Royal family wish the Duchess of Sussex happy birthday as she turns 41 on August 4

Members of the british royal family have sent their warmest wishes to the Duchess of Sussex for her birthday.

The messages appeared to be a brief pause in the long-running royal feud between the Sussexes and The Firm as Meghan celebrated her 41st birthday on August 4.

Writing on social media, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said: “Wishing a happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!”

A photo of a beaming Meghan was shared along with the message, taken on June 3 when she and Prince Harry returned to the UK for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Prince Harry and Meghan joined members of the Queen’s family at St Paul’s Cathedral for a Service of Thanksgiving, when the photo was taken.

It was the only event they attended in front of the world’s media, one day after watching Trooping the Color from a private VIP area.

Seconds after Prince William and Kate’s message, Meghan’s father-in-law and Camilla sent their own.

“Happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!” Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s account declared, along with a red balloon emoji.

It, too, included a photo from St Paul’s Cathedral, showing Meghan wearing her custom outfit by Diorin a color the brand describes as ‘greige’, and her hat by Stephen Jones.

But interestingly, there was no message of happy birthday to Meghan from the Queen’s social media account, The Royal Family.

Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Foundation also sent a message to Meghan writing: “The Invictus Games Foundation would like to wish the Duchess of Sussex a very happy birthday!”

The account included photos of Harry and Meghan at The Hague in April where the Invictus Games took place.

Meghan is understood to have celebrated her birthday privately in Montecito with her husband and their two children Archie, three, and Lilibet, one.

They returned to California immediately after the Jubilee weekend, where they shared a photo of Lili to celebrate her first birthday.

A party was held in the grounds of Frogmore Cottage days before, attended by some of the couple’s friends.

Instead, they are said to have declined invitations to two lunchesafter Trooping the Color and the Service of Thanksgiving, and returned to Frogmore Cottage instead.

But the birthday messages from Clarence House and Kensington Palace are at least a small step to healing the rift within the family.

Last year for her milestone 40th, Meghan launched her 40×40 initiativeencouraging people to commit 40 minutes of their time to support women returning to work.

Elizabeth and her late sister Princess Margaret were childhood friends with Lady Myra and attended her 1946 wedding to Major David Butter.

Myra was a part of the first Buckingham Palace Company of Girl Guides with Elizabeth in 1937 – back when the Queen was still a princess.

Last year, Lady Myra looked back on her role in the Girl Guides, telling The Telegraph: “They got hold of some girls to be part of the thing to make it more fun.

“In the Guides and the Brownies it was a real mixture, which was really nice, some friends, friends of (the family), and all the people in the royal mews, their children, they were Brownies and Guides. Just a normal sort of pack really.”

Lady Myra remained in Elizabeth’s inner circle and was a source of comfort after the Queen lost her husband Prince Philip in April 2021, aged 99.

Lady Myra was also a cousin of Prince Philip and descended from Russian royalty.

After Philip’s death, Lady Myra spoke publicly about the impact he had in supporting the Queen throughout her reign.

“There’s nobody, in my mind, who could have done that job. Nobody. Dedicated to it, and very intelligent and youthful,” she told The Telegraph.

She added Elizabeth has a “very good sense of humor which has gone on for all her life”.

HBO Max and Discovery merger could mean fewer streaming services to pay for

You know how you’re always complaining that there are too many streaming services and it seems like you have to pay for about five different platforms just to watch the 10 shows you hear about?

That may be about to change. The long-promised consolidation of the sector seems to finally be happening.

This morning, Warner Bros Discovery announced it will combine the media conglomerate’s two existing streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+, into one service.

While neither HBO Max nor Discovery+ operates in Australia, the significance of today’s news could herald forthcoming changes within the industry that will eventually affect locally available services.

In Australia, there are close to two dozen subscription video on demand platforms. The high number of services has led to frustrations among consumers who are asked to shell out more and more money to access a fractured slate of programming.

The growth in the number of streaming services is approaching unsustainable levels, especially as customers began to evaluate household budgets during a challenging global economic environment.

The number of streaming services has been steadily increasing, ranging from niche platforms such as the horror-focused Shudder to broad appeal brands such as Disney+.

A consolidation of services within the industry has long been mooted and the Discovery+ and HBO Max merger could be the first in a coming wave as the sector evolves.

HBO programming, including Succession and the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragonand Discovery shows such as Deadliest Catch are distributed in Australia through Foxtel and Binge* while some HBO Max originals titles go to Stan.

Warner Bros Discovery’s announcement was light on details on what the combined streaming platform might look like, only that it would roll out in the US in mid-2023. The current timetable for global plans are Latin America in late-2023, Europe in 2024 and Asia-Pacific in mid-2024.

There’s no confirmation on whether Australia would be one of those Asia-Pacific markets. Warner Bros currently has a multi-year content deal with Foxtel, which it signed in 2020 with no publicly disclosed end date.

Warner Bros Discovery chief executive David Zaslav said of the combined streaming service: “We think that product is going to be superb.”

According to The Verge, Zaslav hinted that the new streaming platform would be built on Discovery’s technology platform, referencing the technical glitches that have beset HBO Max.

The changes to Warner Bros Discovery’s current multiple streaming platforms were pre-empted earlier this week with the revelation the studio was to shelve several projects that had either wrapped filming or delivered finished work.

The most prominent of the canceled titles was DC movie batgirlwhich reportedly had a $US70 million ($A100 million) production budget.

Early media reports suggested that batgirl had performed poorly with early test audiences and the studio was unwilling to spend the money for reshoots or the added cost of marketing.

Other media reports hinted that batgirl and canceled projects such as Scoob: Holiday Haunted they were sacrificed in the name of tax breaks.

the batgirl axing fueled speculation of a significant announcement about HBO Max’s future, given the DC movie had been commissioned specifically for streaming and not cinema release.

HBO is an American pay TV network which has been responsible for some of the most acclaimed series over the past three decades, including The Sopranos, Succession, TheWire, Game of Thrones, Sex And The City and veep.

Even though HBO has never been directly sold to Australian viewers, the strength of its brand and its association with quality programming has made it an international phenomenon.

HBO Max also houses Warner Bros’ movies archives.
