Sad sign Prince Harry’s new book is going to target the Queen

The pen, at least according to playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton, is mightier than the sword but then I suppose eight-figure book deals didn’t exist in 1839 when he was busy jotting down that famous line.

Because he thinks, whether a badly chewed Bic or a Mont Blanc, might be powerful – but a humungous deal with the world’s largest publisher is even mightier still.

Currently, in some secretive computer drive protected by a password only marginally stronger than that protecting the nuclear codes, is the manuscript of Prince Harry’s memoir. Reportedly set to be released before the end of the year, the author himself has promised that he would be writing “not as the Prince I was born but as the man I have become”.

And that man have you become? Well, that man looks like he has quite the ax to grind, with new clues suggesting his book of him could be even more of a Buckingham Palace-rattling doozy than he previously thought.

The question that has started to take shape is this: Is Harry about to ‘betray’ the Queen once and for all?

Since bailing on palace life to swan around California in hulking four-wheel drives and to pay energetic lip service to the notion of service, Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have obviously done their darnedest to become the loudest and most vociferous critics of the royal family since the English Civil War.

But still, even in the face of all that, some ties with the monarchy mothership, and especially with Her Majesty, have held. After all, the Sussexes were there, albeit in the literal and figurative second row, back in June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and they paid the 96-year-old a quickie visit back in April when they were on their way to the Netherlands.

But that was then and this is now.

As the clock ticks down to the launch of Harry’s book, will – or even can – this fragile tie hold once his autobiography lands with a thud?

‘Nothing is sacrosanct’ in Harry’s memoir

For months now there have been reports speculating about what revelations and criticisms the Duke might have been busy scribbling in his ‘My First Tell-All’ notebook.

Tom Bower, in his newly released Revenge: Meghan, Harry And The War Between The Windsorsmakes the case that “nothing and no one” have been held “sacrosanct” by Harry in writing his book.

Uh oh… let’s hope the corgis and dorgis haven’t learned to read.

Rewind to February 6 this year, Her Majesty’s Accession Day, when the Queen made the unexpected announcement that it was her “sincere wish” that her daughter-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall would be crowned alongside her son Prince Charles.

Bower writes that in the wake of the Camilla news, “any doubts about Harry’s antagonism towards his country and family were dismissed by his stony silence” on the matter and that his “refusal to acknowledge the Queen’s decision foreshadowed the problems to come”.

According to Bower: “Occasionally, [Harry] seemed willing to betray every value he formerly held dear. No one realized how his hostility to him had grown during his conversations with John Moehringer, the ghostwriter of his memoirs of him.

“To earn the estimated advance of about $US20 million ($A28.8 million), Harry would be expected to give Moehringer emotional confessions and secret details. These would settle his scores with his family and friends with him. ”

“Among the targets besides William, Kate and Charles would be Camilla. Meghan had identified her as racist.”

In revengeBower writes that the Duke of Sussex was “[edging] towards betraying” some of the people he had been closest to.

“To secure vast sales and recoup the huge advance, the publishers had encouraged Harry to criticize his family in the most extreme terms possible,” Bower said. “Easily persuaded, Harry edged towards betraying his father, Camilla, the Cambridges and even the Queen. And then, the deed was done. To earn out the publisher’s advance, nothing and no one had been sacrosanct.”

It is that last sentence that is the most ominous.

If what Bower reports is correct, then it sounds like the Duke of Sussex’s book could go even further than the denunciations of the monarchy and his family that he and Meghan have wheeled out thus far. (You know, the sensational charges of palace racism, “total neglect” and a callous disregard for the wellbeing of The Firm’s most vulnerable members.)

Who is in Harry’s firing line?

Meanwhile, elsewhere, the Daily Mail‘s very well connected Richard Kay has reported that “there is considerable anxiety in Buckingham Palace circles that Harry, 37, will use the memoir to settle perceived scores with family members and senior courtiers.”

“It is the disintegration of the bond between him and William over the past three years which has so alarmed courtiers.”

One person who has routinely been named as a possible target of Harry’s literary ire is Camilla.

According to Kay, “Five years ago, long before he had thought about writing a book, Harry invited friends of his mother to share memories and private photographs of her.

“One at least had a lengthy discussion with him about Camilla.”

“It was pretty clear that he did not have a high opinion of her,” Diana’s friend later told Kay. “He wasn’t very complimentary about her and I very much doubt he forgot what we talked about that day.”

Blow to the heart of the monarchy

If you take Bower and Kay’s claims together, then it is looking increasingly like the seemingly perma-disgruntled Prince will be pulling no punches on the page when it comes to his family and the monarchy.

And what that means is that, even if he only writes in the most glowing and affectionate terms about his grandmother herself, his memoir could be an abject betrayal of Her Majesty.

Should Harry spend a chunk of his book taking aim at particular family members and various pinstriped staffers who run the royal dog-and-pony show, that would still constitute a strike against the woman who is the head of both the House of Windsor and the institution of the monarchy.

Anything that humiliates or undermines the monarchy indirectly humiliates or undermines the Top Lady (as Diana called her mother-in-law).

Or to quote Louis XIV, “l’etat, c’est Moi,” which translates to “the state is me”.

If Harry does go down this route, then it would be a watershed moment, the sort of line to which there is a very clear ‘before’ and a dramatically different ‘after’.

In this scenario, it is hard to see how he could ever go back in any sense.

In early 2021, Harry appeared on James Corden’s Late Late Show in a dignity-defying appearance (who could ever forget him asking a complete stranger if he could use their loo?) and revealed that the Queen had given the Sussex family a waffle maker for Christmas. This year, will any household appliances be winging their way from Windsor to California?

So, so much is on the line with this book and it might turn out that in 2022, a huge check might end up being the mightiest force of them all.

Prince Harry’s legal battle over security has stepped up a gear

It’s well known that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been unhappy with the level of security offered to them during their visits to the UK, after they discussed it publicly during their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey (where they also got deep about their decision to step away from their senior roles and a whole host of other matters).

Since then, the Sussexes have repeatedly continued to say that a lack of appropriate security is a major reason why they’ve not returned to the UK, along with the pandemic, as much as they’d have liked. Their stance is that the risk of threat to them (and their children, Lili and Archie) is no lower now that they’re no longer working royals.

Now, alongside a lawsuit already in motion against the Home Office, which highlighted tensions between himself and the Queen’s top aid, the Duke of Sussex has filed a further one against the Home Office and also the Metropolitan Police in relation to security matters.

It is believed to also center on the decision not to allow the Sussexes to privately pay for the top-level security that was previously afforded to them via the Home Office and the Met, through taxpayer money (since dropping back from their public duties they’ re no longer entitled to the same teams etc as they’re now seen as private citizens, regardless of whether or not they fund it themselves).

An official from the Judicial Office told MailOnline: “It is at an early stage, no hearings have been listed yet and no decisions have been made.”

Prince Harry won the most recent round of his court fight, meaning he is now entitled to take the case forward for a full judicial review.

To date, it’s estimated that the government have spent £100,000 on the legal battle so far – The Sun reports that this includes £55,254 on the government’s Legal Department, £34,824 on counsel and £16.55 on couriers. Should the prince’s bid fail, he will likely need to cover all legal costs involved in his case against the Home Office.

Here’s hoping that things get resolved soon and that the Sussexes once again feel safe enough to spend proper time with their family and friends over in the UK, something it seems the Queen is especially keen on happening as she recently offered them an olive branch invitation.

Nope’s Keke Palmer: ‘Being a child star is really exploitative’ | movies

Keke Palmer was at home in New York, “hanging out on the couch, or whatever,” when she got the call. Jordan Peele, her management said, wanted a chat. Top-secret, obviously. “And I’m like, are y’all serious? He wants to talk to me about his new film by him? She sounds incredulous, having worked with Peele only once before in 2013, on his sketch show with comedy collaborator Keegan-Michael Key (“Girl, it was the smallest little thing”).

The call led to a digital copy of a script, programmed to auto-delete if you screenshot it. And that became 28-year-old Palmer’s starring role in Nope, Peele’s grab at summer blockbuster status. The sci-fi horror follows his Oscar-winning directorial debut Get Out, and 2019’s Us. And in it, Palmer’s Emerald Haywood and her ella older brother OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) resolve to make history. Somewhere out there, in a white-hot sky above their family’s dusty horse ranch, they are pretty sure they can see a UFO. Their goal? Capturing it on film. The story is about spectacle, but it’s also about the sweaty-palmed hustle culture Hollywood attracts – and siblings who know precisely how to both support and annoy each other.

Palmer’s not new to this. She has been in everything from tween sitcoms to the critically acclaimed Hustlers. She has even voiced a lovebug in Netflix’s filthy animated comedy Big Mouth and its spin-off Human Resources. Emerald Haywood is, though, her highest billing of her on a feature film as an adult. How does she react to Nope being described as her big break from her?

“It’s pretty normal, I think, especially as a Black entertainer,” she says. It reminds her of an old interview she saw, maybe with Luther Vandross. She remembers he was asked – and she puts on a newsreader voice – “How does it feel to be mainstream?” To which she believes he replied: “Well, I’ve always been mainstream; you’ve just found out.”

Nope seems molded for Palmer. As a former child star, she has something in common with Ricky “Jupe” Park, the character played in the film by Steven Yeun. “I really related to it,” she says. “I think performing in general is exploitative. I think that being a child entertainer is really exploitative, because you don’t even know your limits yourself,” she says, on a sofa in an empty central London hotel room. “And a lot of what you later envision as a memory is actually trauma.”

She says this looking perfectly calm. As the air-con gusts, Palmer huddles under a pristine white bathrobe which was draped across her by one of her her handlers as we started to speak. Palmer pulls the robe up to her chin from her. Anyone charmed by a widely shared Vanity Fair interview snippet, where she politely and hilariously explained that she couldn’t identify ex-US vice-president Dick Cheney – “sorry to this man” – would see a quieter side to her today.

Clips of her filmed interviews often become memes. “I’ve had people discover me from the ‘sorry to this man’ meme,” rather than acting roles, she says. She doesn’t mind. Leaning forward, she will take in a question, sometimes playing with the ends of her long cornrows under the robe, a powered-down Energiser bunny version of the viral Keke Palmer.

Born in Harvey, Illinois, then raised in nearby Robbins, Palmer was encouraged to perform by her parents. Singing, acting – it didn’t matter. Aged nine, she starred in Barbershop 2: Back in Business, as the niece of Queen Latifah’s Gina. At 10, she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award, opposite William H Macy in The Wool Cap (she lost to Glenn Close). Her milestones of her kept coming: NAACP Image award-winner for Akeelah and the Bee in 2007, and for Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP; talkshow host of Just Keke on BET, aged 20; the first Black Cinderella on Broadway in 2014.

As a Nickelodeon and Disney actor, she learned to hit her marks, something Peele includes in Nope. “I liked how Jordan put that story in there,” she says, grinning. “There’s so many themes about the film industry, how degenerative it is, and the people that chews it up and spits out.”

Her character, Emerald, seems more than happy to be a jack of all trades in entertainment, reeling off her skills to the crew on a horse wrangling job, while OJ looks on, like a man-sized eye roll. Both siblings (but really OJ) have taken over their father’s horse-wrangling business, after he died under mysterious circumstances. OJ, a sullen foil to sparky Emerald, thinks footage of the UFO could change their fortunes.

Emerald and OJ are the fictional descendants of the real, unknown Black jockey in Eadweard Muybridge’s pioneering 19th-century picture sequences depicting bodies in motion. “You have a character like Emerald, who’s trying to keep the legacy of her family de ella alive,” Palmer says. “And then you have someone like me, who’s playing her from her. There’s something very meta about it” – as though Palmer is the successful real-life version of who Emerald strives to be.

Beyond that, Palmer – like Emerald – knows about navigating the entertainment business as a Black woman. Race and racism aren’t the central subject in Nope, as they were in Get Out. Still, Peele puts Black characters at the center of his films in a way that can trip up people when they expect racism itself to be the point. “This is just his perspective of him,” Palmer says. “Yes, there are nuances in there that can speak to the Black experience specifically, but it’s life, life stories.”

What does she make of playing a Black character whose Blackness is almost taken for granted? “I think it’s great. I mean, I don’t think that Steven Spielberg casts white people because he doesn’t like Black people. I think it’s from his perspective of him.” If she were to write a script, she reckons she would “end up writing about a Black woman” just the same. “It’s just what I can relate to.”

I meet Palmer days after she answered to a tweet thread implying she’s less successful than mixed-race Euphoria lead actor Zendaya because Palmer is darker-skinned. Both were Disney stars. How does she process moments like that? “Yeah… oof.” A very long pause. “It’s difficult. I’m asked about it a lot, do you know? Before that little tweet even came out.” She tries again. “People would always ask me: ‘How do you deal with colorism? How do you deal with being Black in this industry?’ And the answer I’m gonna give you may not be the answer that you want. Because the truth is, I ignore it. I ignore it.”

For some time, she works through this out loud. Her words from her cascade, then suddenly stop. Ultimately, she is saying that, surely, racism exists. But if she spent all of her time stressing about it, she’d never get anything done. “I just hate when the narrative goes to a place where I think young girls might look and say: ‘I’m a victim.’ When yes, racism is real. Colorism is real.” But an imagined Zendaya v Keke Palmer face-off isn’t real. “You believe I’m not doing enough, not because I’m not but because you don’t believe that I can be enough. And that is colorism.”

What disturbs her more is being turned into an object of pity. “You should actually use me as an example of what I was able to accomplish despite what I was up against. Don’t change the story of somebody who has given hope to make them hopeless,” she says, with a “huh!” chuckle. “The real conversation around colorism and Keke Palmer should be that she defied the odds.”

She wasn’t raised to reason with racists. “If you feel like the Boo-Boo-Jones awards don’t show love to Black people, then stop going,” she begins, sounding exasperated. “Don’t ask somebody to care about your ass if they don’t care about you. Go where you’re celebrated, not where you have to beg to get in.” That’s why, she thinks aloud, she’s not as scarred by prejudice. “It’s not because I’m not experiencing it or haven’t been on the receiving end of it. Of course I have been. But…OK? Then, ‘Fuck you, too,’ and you move the hell on to where people appreciate you. That’s all you can do.” It’s why, she thinks, she’s able to work consistently. And perhaps why the calls keep coming.

Nope is released in the UK on 12 August

Marvel’s Shang-Chi Star Throws Shade at WB’s Batgirl Disaster

The comic book movie world is up in arms about the recent cancellation of Warner Bros. Discovery’s batgirlwhich was nearly finished in preparation for its upcoming release within the DC Extended Universe.

This movie was set to help add new layers to DC’s upcoming Multiversal storyline within the DCEU, but even with post-production nearly complete, Warner Bros. decided to shelve the project completely. The massive merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery is seemingly leading to drastic changes in how DC’s biggest heroes are utilized, but with batgirl now shelved, it’s led to a public disaster for the company.

President of DC Films Walter Hamada almost left his position due to his outrage over the decision, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared his deepest sympathies with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who also directed the MCU’s Ms Marvel. Now, one of Marvel’s other major stars has shared a more comedic reaction to the news, although it’s earning mixed reception from fans.

Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu on Batgirl Cancellation

Shang Chi movie poster

MCU star Simu Liu took to Twitter to hilariously throw shade at Warner Bros. for the decision to cancel the release of batgirl.

He joked about a hypothetical situation where Marvel canceled a Shang-Chi Holiday Special “due to quality concerns” after already having completed filming, dissing WB for doing that very thing with batgirl:

“I’m sorry to inform you guys that Disney has decided to scrap the Shang-Chi Holiday Special due to quality control concerns. I had already filmed the entire thing. I even designed an all-gingerbread Ta Lo. RIP Shang Chi and the Legend of the TEEEN GOLDEN RIIIIINGS”

While some fans got a laugh out of this joke, others saw it as a bit of a low blow in the wake of everything that happened, sharing their thoughts on Twitter.

@carlosgzz03 urged Liu to read the situation regarding how many “people are suffering” after this decision and to be “thankful” for what he still has:

“…. really? YOU know Alot of People are Suffering. And You have to make a JOKE OF THIS. NOT IT…… be THANKFUL of what You Have. And that Your movie is Not getting Canceled For Now . . This is Shamefull”

@ yo_elmanolo still supports Liu, but also demanded that the star apologize to “the entire creative team” for the comment:

“Simu, I love you. But please delete this, it’s not a pleasant situation for the entire creative team behind these projects at Warner. Apology video immediately.”

@mpychu saw Liu’s tweet as somewhat insensitive after seeing his fellow Hollywood peers’ work “throw down the drain:”

“dude it’s not cool to joke about this when so many of your fellow industry peers’ hardwork has been thrown down the drain”

In the midst of criticism, actor/producer Wilson Cleveland backed up Liu’s statement. He made it clear that Liu was only “dragging…WB’s decision” and that the star likely agrees with many of the people who didn’t like his initial Tweet:

“People. Simu is dragging the ridiculousness of WB’s decision to cancel a $90 million movie. He’s not dragging the cast, crew or fans. I get there’s valid outrage but you’re directing it at someone who likely agrees with you.”

Batgirl Decision Baffling Marvel’s Biggest Names

Simu Liu is never one to shy away from commenting on current comic book movie news, having joked around about Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home before commenting on the use of Mandarin in Moon Knight. While these particular comments didn’t garner the best reaction from fans as a whole, the sentiment he offers is clear after everything that went down.

Liu remains passionate about the comic book movie industry, which has taken a big hit with batgirl being canceled so suddenly. As the Shang-Chi star looks to continue building his own role in the MCU. he also grows as something of an unofficial spokesman for the industry at large as both Marvel and DC keep adding to their stories.

With batgirl now being taken completely off of Warner Bros.’ schedule, fans and industry professionals have their concerns regarding what the company’s future with the DC universe will look like. Although Flash seems to be safe from this fate for now, fans’ eyes will be all over WB as the studio’s plans for its superhero movies start from square one again.

Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available to stream on Disney+.

Rebel Wilson heads out for some retail therapy in turquoise ensemble with new love Ramona Agruma

It looks like Rebel Wilson was in need of a bit of retail therapy.

On Friday, the Australian actor and comedian headed out to do some shopping with his girlfriend Ramona Agruma in West Hollywood.

At one point, the Pitch Perfect star flashed her infectious smile toward an admiring photographer after making a pitstop at the luxury avant-garde boutique, Maxfield, with her new lady love following close behind.

Wilson, 42, showed off her slimmed down figure dressed in turquoise shorts and a matching hoodie, which she shed several times as the temperatures climbed in the mid-80s Fahrenheit.

She also donned a white T-shirt and matching slip-on shoes for her afternoon out with her partner.

Her blonde tresses were styled long and flowing several inches past her shoulders with a part in the middle.

During their afternoon together, Wilson periodically wore a white baseball cap over her blonde tresses that were pulled into a ponytail.

After browsing through the boutique, the Australian actress eventually reappeared on the street carrying a Maxfield bag filled with several items.

In early June, Wilson announced she was in a serious relationship with Agruma, 42, who’s a successful fashion and jewelry designer, according to Elle.

‘I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess #loveislove,’ she gushed at the caption of an adorable selfie snap of the couple.

In one post by Wilson, the actress can be seen holding hands with Agruma during their visit to Italy in mid-June.

Agruma has been equally liberal in her postings of their travels together over the last couple months, that was solidified by a photo of the couple with their mates as they were about to board a private plane.

And, of course, there were plenty of images that captured their more quieter moments together, including when they frolicked in the ocean water in Malibu on July 27 that she captioned: ‘Summer vibes @rebelwilson,’ along with wave and pink heart emojis.

The screenplay is being written by Jim and Brian Kehoe, the brothers who wrote the 2019 high school comedy Blockers.

‘I’m thinking it’ll be as big as TOP GUN so pumped to be working with Paramount again and this winning team! My love for tennis will fully be on display in this film.’ she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post by her.

Most recently Wilson was shooting the independent film The Almond And The Seahorse, in what will be her first non-comedy film role.

It also stars Trine Dyrholm, Meera Syal, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Celyn Jones, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kaite O’Reilly, and is serving as co-director with Tom Stern.

Why Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson broke up, Kanye factor

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson’s age difference caused them to split earlier this week, sources exclusively tell Page Six.

“Pete is 28 and Kim is 41 — they are just in very different places at the moment,” the insider says.

“Pete is totally spontaneous and impulsive and wants her to fly to New York, or wherever he is on a moment’s notice,” the source adds. “But Kim has four kids and it isn’t that easy. She needs to focus on the kids.”

The source also tells us that Kardashian — who runs multiple businesses and stars on a reality show — was “totally exhausted by this relationship and other things going on in her life.”

The “Kardashians” star has recently had a tumultuous relationship with ex Kanye West, which caused strife while she was dating the Saturday Night Live alum.

The insider explained: “When Kim is with someone else, Kanye can cause problems with the kids. He tries to divide and conquer. I can’t help it.

“Kim is a really dedicated mother, and her kids will always come first. Ella she wants and needs harmony at her home and in her life.”

Kardashian and Davidson — who have been spending time apart lately as he has been in Australia filming a new movie — met when she hosted Saturday Night Live in October 2021, and started officially dating the following month.

“When we kissed, I was just like ‘Mmm!’ It was a stage kiss, but it was still a little zing,” the SKIMS founder later said of kissing the comedian in a sketch on the late-night show.

However, Kardashian — who filed for divorce from West, 45, in February 2021 — wasn’t sure if the spark was anything special.

“I was like, ‘Wow, I really haven’t kissed anyone else in 10 years, so maybe I’m just like being stupid and it’s nothing, it’s just a stage kiss’,” she added.

Kardashian and West tied the knot in May 2014 and share four children: North, 9, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 3.

Davidson — who was previously engaged to Ariana Grande — recently opened up about his “dream” to become a dad one day.

“(I’m) definitely a family guy. My favorite thing ever, which I’ve yet to achieve, is I want to have a kid,” he said last month.

OnlyFans star has world’s most tattooed vagina

A British OnlyFans star says she has the most heavily tattooed vagina in the world, with an artist needing five separate sessions to needle her labia.

Over the years, Becky Holt, 34, has spent more than $42,000 on a tattoo “bodysuit” with artworks adorning her entire frame, from her face to her feet, The NY Post reports.

The blonde made sure not to neglect her pubic region, and recently sought to have the sensitive area inked — despite an intense amount of agony it caused.

“I was in an incredible amount of pain,” Holt told Ark Media of the fifth and final ink session that she underwent on July 5.

“It’s quite embarrassing having a tattoo artist between your legs but it needed to be finished as I want my body suit to be fully complete,” the mom-of-one added.

Almost a month on, Holt’s vagina is still “swollen” and she isn’t able to have sex with her partner, Ben.

“We won’t be able to be intimate until it’s finished healing which will be difficult for both of us as we have a very active sex life,” Holt divulged. “Foreplay for him only currently!”

Despite the sex drought, Holt’s beau has managed to find some humor in the situation.

“When I showed him how swollen it was he joked and showed me a picture of a ‘Monsters In.’ character saying my fanny looked like them,” the tattoo lover revealed.

Holt didn’t divulge what design she chose to have permanently plastered onto her labia, but shared photos of her trip to the tattoo parlor.

The blonde was seen wincing in pain as she sat on a chair with her legs spread while the artist needled away.

Holt believes she’s one of the only women in the world to have her vaginal folds inked, and says admirers have praised her for enduring the painful process.

“People can’t believe how brave I am for having my labia tattooed,” she bragged. “I’m not sure how many people in the world have this tattoo but I imagine I’m one of very few.”

The Sandman’s Johanna Constantine role explained

The Sandman spoilers follow.

John Constantine has been knocking around the fictional realm for a while. The occult detective has jumped from DC comic to DC comic, to various adaptations on both television and movies.

There’s some real love out there for Constantine.

This latest iteration of the character sees them flip from John to Johanna Constantine in a gender-swap move by Neil Gaiman in the adaptation of his The Sandman.

Yet a trip to 1782 in episode six of The Sandman blurs the lines between this seemingly straightforward transformation.

Back then we find a Lady Johanna Constantine (John’s counterpart) attempting to coerce the King of Dreams into giving her immortality. Prior to this flashback there was also present-day Johanna Constantine giving Dream hell as he attempts to elicit her help from her.

Both Constantines are played by Doctor Who‘s Jenna Coleman, leading some to wonder if the present-day Johanna is the descendant of Lady Constantine. This would make her a like-for-like counterpart to John’s descendant of her, who already exists within the Constantine universe.

The other theory rumbling around is that she could be the original Lady Constantine, who has somehow managed to achieve immortality.

This isn’t a stretch as John/Johanna Constantine is known for being well versed in the arts of magic.

If confusion be your middle name then it’s about time we clear things up once and for all.

Who is Johanna Constantine in The Sandman?

If you believed Johanna Constantine had stumbled on the elixir of life then you’re barking up the wrong tree. While it’s a plausible assumption, Coleman has confirmed it to be incorrect.

During an interview with DigitalSpy she said: “No.” Point blank – simple. She elaborated further, saying, “I think this is where Neil and Allan [Heinberg] came up with the idea, because obviously we have Lady Joanna Constantine, who had played this series as well. So it’s the idea being: why don’t we have the direct ancestor? Hence Johanna Constantine.”

When explaining his decision for the character shake-up, Gaiman told slashfilm:

“When we looked at what we were going to do in this whole series, we knew that we were going to have Lady Johanna Constantine meeting Dream in a pub.

“If we’re going to do that and we want a really classy actress to portray her, then we’re going to have to give that actress more to do than just meet him once in a pub.

“Given that there really weren’t many women in the beginning, the idea that we could find one person and have them do both, just seemed nice and straightforward.”

Who is John Constantine?

And how does he compare to Johanna?

It’s a loaded question considering the many iterations that exist of this character.

There’s Keanu Reeves’ 2005 take in the movie Constantine. A brooding, cynical man with terminal lung cancer and who believed himself damned for attempting suicide.

This light and cheery version is followed by Matt Ryan’s demon hunter and master of the occult in the 2014 television series of the same name.

However if we were to hark back to the original source material John is tall and blonde-haired with a rock’n’roll edge. His look of him was based on Sting, as a way of getting the musician into DC comics (starting with ‘Swamp Thing’ issue 25).

It wasn’t long before the foul-mouthed, chain-smoking occult detective found his feet in his own comic ‘Hellblazer.’ He was an anti-social, bisexual anti-hero who had a knack for magic, rituals, curses and exorcism. Remind you of anyone?

It seems a Constantine by any other name would really still smell as sweet. Despite the gender change John and Johanna share more core similarities than some may assume – detachment and lack of commitment are key defining character traits of both.

In The Sandman, this is first hinted at through Johanna’s relationship history with ex-girlfriend Rachel (Eleanor Fanyinka). The emotionally stunted Johanna ghosted Rachel by leaving the home they unofficially shared and never coming back. A brave excuse. “Because [love] never ends well.”

She does pad this out by implying that she fears for the safety of her loved ones owing to her extremely dangerous vocation and claims it was safer for Rachel if she left.

As Coleman explained to DigitalSpy: “A lot of people who know are familiar with Constantine. We see her very much going about her day-to-day business, and now she’s at the point where she’s kind of at the top of her business.

She’s trading life. She’s the exorcist to the Royal Family. She’s doing well for herself.

“But the further and further and further she progresses, the more contact that she has in her occult detective life, the more it’s costing her, and the more people that she’s losing, and the more wounded and tortured and lonely, I think, she gets because everyone she comes close to, she’s losing.”

She added: “The more vulnerability that she has, the more she has to lock herself up, and armor herself away.

“I think that’s where the cynicism and disenchantment, but also wryness and humor – using humor all the time to mask pain. I think that’s where the meeting of Constantine and Dream (Tom Sturridge) is so beautiful, because Dream sees straight through to her dreams, where she doesn’t open the door to anybody.”

Gaiman admits that Coleman’s take on the character is the best he’s seen to date.

“I think Jenna is the best Constantine on screen so far, and weirdly somehow the truest, because she both has the humor and the attractiveness and that sleazy, doomed quality.

“You know that if you fall in love with her, you are dead and demon-fodder and you also know that you can’t help falling in love with her.”

This is a call back to the fact that both have experienced doomed relationships leading to the death of their respective loved ones.

When it comes to Johanna’s history we don’t really know much beyond the fact that Morpheus has had many dealings with the Constantine family in the past.

John’s lineage, however, is more notably established and tracks back to something called the Laughing Magician bloodline. His ancestors of him were renowned for trickery, which even allowed them to fool God and the Devil themselves.

It’s not clear whether or not this will trickle down into the televised character just yet. As mentioned, we’ve barely scratched the surface with Johanna…
