Game of Thrones star Sean Bean says intimacy coordinators ‘spoil the spontaneity’ of sex scenes

Actor Sean Bean has hit out at the presence of intimacy coordinators on movie and TV productions.

the game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings star, 63, said in a profile interview with The Times UK intimacy coordinators “spoil the spontaneity” of sex scenes.

“It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things. Somebody saying, ‘Do this, put your hands there, while you touch his thing… I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise,” Bean said.

But acting is generally considered a technical exercise in which an actor is directed by somebody who tells them what to say and do.

Intimacy coordinators are increasingly common on sets to ensure that actors are comfortable with the physical movements required in a sex scene. The inclusion of intimacy coordinators has been supercharged in the wake of the MeToo movement.

Intimacy coordinator Ita O’Brien explained to news.com.au in 2020 what her job entailed. She said: “We have an understanding of physicality, body movements and anatomy, and of an actor’s process and how they can serve the script.

“We want to know what’s not suitable for you as a person, and we can work creatively with an actor with your agreement and consent and help the production. When we work from a clear ‘yes’ from the actors, it’ll be a way better sex scene.

“Then once you get in front of the camera, your actors can be free because they know they can trust where they’re going to be touched and where they’re touching their fellow actor.”

Bean made the comments in the context of Lady Chatterleya 1993 TV movie with him and Joely Richardson.

He said of his experience: “Lady Chatterley was spontaneous. It was joy. We had a good chemistry between us and we knew what we were doing was unusual because she was married, I was married.

“But we were following the story. We were trying to portray the truth of what DH Lawrence wrote.”

Bean also told The Times UK of a scene from his current series Snowpiercer which featured him and another actor – later revealed to be co-star Lena Hall – in the nude and involving a mango.

“I think they cut a bit out actually,” he said. “Often the best work you do – where you’re trying to push the boundaries and the very nature of it is experimental – gets censored when TV companies or advertisers say it’s too much. It’s a nice scene, quite surreal, dream-like and abstract. And mango-esque.”

when The Times UK reporter pointed out to Bean that intimacy coordinators are often there to protect actors, Bean responded by saying it depended on the actor and that Hall “had a musical cabaret background so she was up for anything”.

Hall later responded on Twitter by saying that she felt completely comfortable with Bean in that scene but she still saw the value of intimacy coordinators.

She wrote: “If I feel comfortable with my scene partner and with others in the room then I won’t need an intimacy coordinator. But if there is any part of me that is feeling weird, gross, over-exposed etc, I will either challenge the necessity of the scene or I’ll want an (intimacy coordinator).

“I do feel intimacy coordinators are a welcome addition to the set and think they could also help with the trauma experienced in other scenes. Sometimes you need them and sometimes you don’t but every single person and scene and experience is different.”

Stream the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon on BINGE or FOXTEL from August 22. New BINGE customers get a 14-day free trial.

Hall also clarified that her professional background is in theater and not cabaret, although she occasionally performs cabaret, but that “does not mean that I am up for anything”.

Other actors have also come out in defense of intimacy coordinators, including West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler.

She wrote on Twitter: “Intimacy coordinators establish an environment of safety for actors. I was extremely grateful for the one we had on (West Side Story) – they showed grace to a newcomer like myself + educated those around me who’ve had years of experience. Spontaneity in intimate scenes can be unsafe. Wake up.”

An infamous incident of an unsafe set environment is the experience of actor Maria Schneider, who as a 19-year-old filmed a rape scene in Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1972 film Last Tango in Paris.

She said the scene, which involved penetration with a stick of butter, wasn’t in the original shooting script and she was only told of it in the moments before filming. Bertolucci has said that he had n’t told her about the scene because he wanted her performance by her to be real and rageful.

Later recalling the order, Schneider said: “I was so angry. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, by both Marlon (Brando) and by Bertolucci.”

Carlo Bonomi, Italian vocal actor for claymation Pingu dies aged 85

Tributes are flowing for Carlo Bonomi, the actor behind the voice of children’s claymation character Pingu, after he died on the weekend at the age of 85.

Remembered for his “noot noot” phrase, the Italian vocal actor passed away in Milan on August 6 with the cause of his death unknown, publication AF News reports.

Australians knew Bonomi for his “Penguinese”, the language spoken in stop-motion series Pingu which aired six seasons between 1986 to 2006.

Bonomi was the unscripted voice behind all the show’s characters for four seasons, before he was replaced by vocal actors David Sant and Marcello Magni when the show was renewed for seasons five and six.

Pingu is about a young penguin who sometimes gets up to mischief on his family’s polar ice cap in Antarctica.

Fans have praised the late actor for his service as a children’s entertainer by sharing pictures and videos of Bonomi online.

“RIP Carlo Bonomi, thank you for your service in children’s entertainment and for giving my childhood some light to shine in the dark,” one fan posted to Twitter.

“May the Noot Noots never fade from our memories.”

Meanwhile American cartoonist Travis Bickerstaff said Bonomi’s legacy will live on through others.

“If you’re wondering if this will be the end of Pinguit’s not,” Bickerstaff wrote.

“Other voice actors in the Pingu franchise had carried on Bonomi’s legacy, since he established the ‘Penguinese’ language for the series.”

Bonomi was also well-known in Italy as the voice behind the announcements played at Central Station and Florence Santa Maria Novella Station, which were used up until 2008.

He also played a part in a number of Italian shorts, including line animation The Line, The Line.

UNO update gives controversial new meaning to ‘Skip’ cards

We’ve all been that person on the end of the UNO battering ram.

No matter what you do, the cards just won’t line up, leaving you as the poor sod forced to pick up half the deck in shame.

And there’s always someone at the table explaining how their rule “makes the game better”.

But now, the company behind the iconic card game has revealed a cheeky rule that is sure to spark debate.

UNO says players can avoid the dreaded “Draw 2” cards by plonking a “Skip” card on the pile, but only if they’re the same color.

“Skipping never felt so good,” wrote the official UNO Twitter account. “If someone plays a Draw 2 on you and you have a Skip card of the SAME COLOR in your hand, you can play it and ‘bounce’ the penalty to the next player!”

UNO also said if the next player has a Skip card of any colour, they can play it and kick the penalty down to the next player.

“The next player must draw the two cards, unless they have a Skip card (of any colour) they can play, in which case they pass the penalty to the next player and so on until no one has a Skip card and must draw two cards.”

UNO reminded players that they can’t stack cards on top of one another.

“You can only play one card per turn – stacking is not allowed!”

But some fans weren’t too pleased with the update.

“Absolutely not,” one person replied. “I’ve lost enough friendships over fighting this exact rule. I can’t find this in the rule book — surely this is fake!”

But others admitted it was in their personalized rule book all along.

“This is standard — why are so many people shocked?” one fan said. “The UNO video game uses this rule as well, it’s legit.”

In 2019, Mattel launched a new version of UNO to add some extra spice to the mix.

UNO Flip is a more competitive and rage-inducing version of the classic game.

The entire deck is double-sided, featuring a “light side” resembling the original game and a “dark side”, where penalties are far tougher.

If you score a “Flip” card the game is entirely in your hands and you gain the power of revealing a new set of numbers and colors on the other side.

And as always, never forget to shout “UNO” when you’re down to your last card.

John Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen, hits back at judgmental fan

American model Chrissy Teigen called out a fan who didn’t “recognize” her in a new photo posted to Instagram.

“I’ve had these teeth for like 10 years,” the cookbook author responded on Sunday, referencing her veneers.

In a follow-up comment, Teigen added, “You guys are somethin” when a separate fan asked why she is always “changing” her face, Page Six reports.

The comments came alongside an adorable photo of Teigen, 36, enjoying a boat ride with her son Miles lying on top of her.

“Keeping up with this one somehow,” she captioned the snap.

Despite the critical commentary from her followers, the Cravings founder glowed in the image, likely because she is pregnant again after suffering a tragic loss nearly two years ago.

“The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again,” Teigen began the lengthy caption that announced the news last week.

“1 billion shots later (in the leg lately, as you can see!) we have another on the way. Every appointment I’ve said to myself, ‘Ok if it’s healthy today I’ll announce’, but then I breathe a sigh of relief to hear a heartbeat and decide I’m just too nervous still.”

Teigen shared how nervous she was to announce the news publicly after her and her husband, John Legend’s, third child, Jack, was stillborn in October 2020, but she explained how she is pushing through those emotions.

“I don’t think I’ll ever walk out of an appointment with more excitement than nerves but so far, everything is perfect and beautiful and I’m feeling hopeful and amazing,” she wrote. “Ok phew it’s been very hard keeping this in for so long!”

Home and Away updates fans on Jasmine’s exit decision

Home and Away spoilers follow from Monday’s Australian episode (August 8), which some UK viewers may prefer to avoid.

Home and Away has shared more insight into why Jasmine Delaney doesn’t want to return to Summer Bay.

Jasmine has been abruptly written out this year as Sam Frost, who played her, decided to leave the show in late 2021.

The popular character’s exit storyline saw her announce that she was leaving on a temporary basis to help the family of her late husband Robbo.

The Shaw family needed assistance keeping their farm running as Wendy had suffered a heart attack.

Last month, episodes airing in Australia saw Jasmine’s partner Cash Newman ask her to come home to Summer Bay.

Jasmine agreed that she would, but failed to show up without explanation. This thwarted Cash’s romantic plans for her to propose to her.

In subsequent scenes, Cash asked a local police force to check on Jasmine and the Shaws to make sure they were okay after their mysterious silence.

Jasmine passed the message on that she was fine, but wouldn’t be returning.

In Monday’s episode on Channel 7 in Australia, Cash provided further insight by revealing that Jasmine’s complicated feelings for her late husband had fueled her decision.

Cash told Jasmine’s sister Rose Delaney that when it came down to it, Jas couldn’t bring herself to leave the Shaws again.

Cash noted that Jasmine was “more in love with her husband’s memory” than with him.

There was little time for further reflection, as the Parata family’s ongoing troubles with a biker gang led to a shock cliffhanger for Cash and Rose.

Sam Frost announced last year that she’d be taking a break from Home and Away, giving her time to receive COVID vaccinations. All cast at Home and Away are obliged to be vaccinated due to a rule implemented at the start of the year.

In a change of plans, Sam later announced that her departure would be permanent.

A spokesperson for Channel 7 said in a statement sent to DigitalSpy: “We support and respect Sam’s decision to leave Home and Away. Sam leaves with our sincere thanks and very best wishes for the future.”

Show insiders suggested that Sam’s exit was not related to the previous vaccination discussions.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.45pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR. First-look screenings air at 6.30pm on 5STAR and the show also streams on My5.

In Australia, the show airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 and streams on 7plus.

Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.

Lars von Trier diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease

Controversial Oscar-nominated Danish director Lars von Trier has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

The 66-year-old’s longtime production company, Zentropa, announced the news in a statement Monday with his blessing to do so, according to Deadline.

“In agreement with Lars von Trier, Zentropa has chosen to publish that Lars has [been] diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease,” shared Louise Vesth, Trier’s producer at Zentropa, in the statement, reported the new york post.

“This is done to counter any speculation about his health ahead of the premiere of The Kingdom Exodus.

Trier’s third and final installation of his 1990s cult supernatural TV series The Kingdom is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival at the end of August.

“Lars is in good spirits and is being treated for his symptoms, and work to complete The Kingdom Exodus continues as planned,” Veth added.

Trier is not expected to do much press to promote the show due to his diagnosis.

Trier’s other credits include Dancer in the Dark, antichrist, melancholia and the nymphomaniac films.

His career has been deemed controversial, especially when more than 100 viewers walked out — while others gave a standing ovation — during a screening of his 2018 film The House That Jack Built at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Matt Dillon plays a serial killer who, when he isn’t graphically mutilating women, hunts little kids with a rifle. His co-star Uma Thurman conveniently had a scheduling conflict and didn’t show up,” new york post‘s Johnny Oleksinski wrote at the time.

Von Trier also “joked” that he could “sympathise” with Nazi Adolf Hitler during a 2013 Cannes press conference for melancholia, as a horrified Kirsten Dunst looked on. The filmmaker was banned from Cannes for seven years.

Trier also made movies under a Danish movement called the Dogma 95, in which films were made without any artificial lighting, tacked-on music or shooting scenes out of sequence.

The Idiotswhich includes an explicit sex scene, was the first film made following Dogma 95 rules in 1998.

In addition, all Dogma 95 films were made with hand-held cameras and directors were not credited.

4-year-old US kid announces transition to male gender

A four-year-old child has captured hearts – and sparked a heated online debate – after announcing he was a boy via a rainbow-fueled gender reveal at the Vancouver Pride Parade in Canada.

Charlie Danger Lloyd was assigned female at birth – but from a young age expressed he was a boy, his mum said, as reported by the new york post.

Now-viral footage and photos captured the moment young Charlie – with his grandmother by his side – released a confetti cannon that filled the area with blue smoke.

“Once they closed the road, Charlie strutted out with Grammy and they faced the sidelines and after a short struggle, the cannon exploded with blue smoke and biodegradable confetti,” his mum, 27-year-old Alaina Bourrel, told South West News Service after her little boy ran into her arms.

“Charlie jumped with joy as the crowd cheered him on. He couldn’t believe the love and support he was shown from the bystanders.”

Despite Charlie’s happiness, his mum said she has come under attack by vicious trolls online, calling her a “paedophile, groomer and rapist” for her son’s transition.

However, Ms Bourrel said that her child started expressing different gender needs at the age of two, telling her family he was “growing to look just like daddy” and “I’m a boy” all day, every day.

The proud mum said the parade moment was dreamt up after they told Charlie the family held a previous gender reveal before he was born – where the smoke didn’t work properly.

“When we told him the story, he asked for a re-do with his granny at the Vancouver Pride Parade – so we bought him a smoke cannon and tucked it away for this day,” she said.

“He wasn’t your typical little girl. He would play with other boys and the parents would say he was more of a boy than their own children,” Ms Bourrel recalled, saying the family didn’t think anything of it until the end of 2021, when he didn’t want to shop in the girl’s section and wanted his hair cut short.

“He refused to shop in the girl’s section, but was too nervous to shop in the boy’s. After lots of expressing his feelings and emotions with me, he decided that he wanted a new wardrobe so we set out to find our new style.”

About a month after buying his new wardrobe, Charlie was ready to get his hair cut.

“We made an appointment with Lia at Big Bros Barbershop, a trans-owned and operated salon in East Vancouver,” his mum said.

“After leaving the salon that afternoon, Charlie was a completely new child.”

After changes to his wardrobe and his appearance, his confidence went through the roof.

“We are four months since he began his social transition now,” Ms Bourrel said.

“He is still a normal kid that does completely normal little kid things like play with Lego, uses his creativity and learns to ride his bike.”

Despite online haters who criticize her parenting choices, she said Charlie’s family and friends have been nothing but supportive of the preschooler.

“His choices were not questioned and he was congratulated and everyone began using new pronouns,” she said, adding it is no different to raising any other child and she appreciates the support from those in their inner circle.

“We are so lucky to have the circle that we do.”

Lars von Trier diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease | Lars von Trier

Lars von Trier, the acclaimed and controversial Danish director, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, his production company has announced.

In a statement released on Monday, Zentropa – which von Trier co-founded in 1992 with producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen – said the director is in “good spirits and is being treated for his symptoms” while he completes the upcoming final season of his TV trilogy series.

The Kingdom Exodus premieres at the Venice film festival in August and von Trier will take part in limited press events to accompany its release on Mubi later this year, the statement confirmed.

In an interview with the Guardian’s Xan Brooks in 2018, von Trier ascribed his shaking hands to antidepressants and alcohol withdrawal.

“I’m working on my alcoholism, which is good,” he said. I had an eight-month period where I didn’t drink, and I’ll get back to that again soon. But I have this alcohol ‘tool’ that I use when I have to. And, if I have a really big anxiety attack, it’s the only thing that will help.”

Von Trier, who is now 66, was then speaking following the Cannes premiere of his most recent feature film, serial killer movie The House That Jack Built.

That screening marked his return to the festival following seven years during which the festival declared him “persona non grata” after he jokingly said he could sympathize with Hitler during a press conference for 2011’s Melancholia.

Other than 2013’s Nymphomaniac, all von Trier’s films have debuted on the Croisette, starting in 1991 with his debut, Europe, and continuing with Breaking the Waves (1995), Dancer in the Dark (2000), Dogville (2003) and Antichrist (2009). ).

Von Trier remains one of the most polarizing directors working today. His Dogme 95 manifesto, drawn up with likes of Thomas Vinterberg, revolutionized arthouse cinema with its uncompromising commitment to authenticity.

The black humor which underpins much of his work, as well as his confrontational approach to gender relations, has won him both devoted fans and passionate detractors.

Today’s Word Answer August 9th

The Wordle answer today is patty.

Adopted in the late 17th Century, patty originally referred to a small, squished pie and is derived from the common French word, pate. In Jamaica it still has this meaning, while in the USA – as well as Australia, New Zealand and increasingly the UK – it usually refers to a flattened portion of ground meat and is synonymous with burger.

The word burger also has an interesting etymology, since it’s an example of a linguistic phenomenon called back formation. This is where speakers create new words by adding or removing perceived affixes from older words.

Hamburgers are named for the German city of Hamburg, but because of confusion with the English word ham, people thought that the ham was added to burger rather than the “-er” being added to Hamburg. This misunderstanding eventually led to burger being commonly used as its own word.

There are plenty more word games around to try out. Why not see if one of these Wordle alternatives takes your fancy?
