Issey Miyake dies of cancer aged 84

Tokyo: Japanese designer Issey Miyake, famous for his pleated style of clothing that never wrinkles and who produced the signature black turtleneck of friend and Apple founder Steve Jobs, has died, media said on Tuesday. He was 84.

Miyake, whose name became a byword for Japan’s economic and fashion prowess in the 1980s, died on August 5 of liver cancer, Kyodo news agency said. No further details were immediately available.

Known for his practicality, Miyake is said to have wanted to become either a dancer or an athlete before reading his sister’s fashion magazines inspired him to change direction – with those original interests believed to be behind the freedom of movement his clothing permits.

Miyake was born in Hiroshima and was seven years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city while he was in a classroom. He was reluctant to speak of the event in later life. In 2009, writing in the New York Times as part of a campaign to get then-US President Barack Obama to visit the city, he said he did not want to be labeled as “the designer who survived” the bomb.

“When I close my eyes, I still see things no one should ever experience,” he wrote, adding that within three years, his mother died of radiation exposure.

“I have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to put them behind me, preferring to think of things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy. I gravitated toward the field of clothing design, partly because it is a creative format that is modern and optimistic.”

Tottie Goldsmith clutches flowers and a bottle of vodka following Olivia Newton-John’s death

Tottie Goldsmith has been pictured returning to her Melbourne home following the devastating death of her aunt, Olivia Newton John.

The iconic Grease star died peacefully at the age of 73 at her home in southern California, surrounded by family and friends. Her husband John Easterling announced her death on her Facebook page on Monday.

Tottie, 59, appeared devastated as she clutched a bottle of Absolut Vodka and made her way to her front door. Once there, she found a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

The grief-stricken TV and music personality wore jeans, a sheepskin jumper and a camel jacket.

She wore her auburn hair down and appeared to clutch a white shirt over her arm as she headed to her home.

Tottie is best known for pop group, Chantoozies, who had big hits with their songs Witch Queen, He’s Gonna Step On You Again, Wanna Be Up, and Love the One You’re With in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Her father Brian Goldsmith, a renowned night club owner and restaurateur in Melbourne, died in 2020. Her mother is Olivia’s sister, Rona.

Tottie appeared with her aunt at G’day USA in LA in 2020 – where Olivia candidly spoke about being in denial about her cancer diagnosis.

In one of her last poignant red carpet appearances, the Australian star admitted that she even refused to think about cancer on a daily basis.

The fun-loving singer and actress, famous for her role as Sandy in 1978 film Grease, as well as her stellar music career, called life ‘a gift’ no matter the outcome.

Newton-John had always remained positive about her health even during the worrying times of the pandemic.

Just two years before her passing, she spoke candidly about her outlook on life at the G’Day USA benefit in Beverly Hills alongside former co-star John Travolta.

‘Gosh, life is a gift and I’ve had an amazing life and I intend to keep going with it and I want to help other people with cancer of course,’ she told DailyMail.com in the January 2020 interview.

‘I have my wellness center in Melbourne and I want to see an end to cancer in my lifetime so other people don’t have to suffer.’

Newton-John was first diagnosed with the disease in 1992 but announced she had overcome the cancer in 2013, the year after her Wellness Center first opened.

But in May 2017, she was told cancer had metastasized and spread to her bones.

Reflecting on her fight to beat the condition, she admitted: ‘I don’t see it as a battle. I don’t think about it a lot, to be honest.

Newton-John also reflected on her delight at still being remembered for Grease over four decades after its release.

She confessed: ‘We did something very special together. That movie is still loved.’

She recalled how caring Travolta was during the filming of the musical romantic film.

Asked about her favorite memory on set, she relied: ‘His kindness to me. When there was one scene in the movie – it was my close up, when Rizzo pulls me forward in the bonfire scene – and in the middle of my take, he stopped it and came over to me and whispered in my ear: “I think you can do better.”

Newton-John famously resisted the part of Sandy in the 1978 movie Grease. She was 28 at the time and thought she was too old to play a fresh-faced high school student

‘So that’s really generous. For an actor to do that for another actor. I wasn’t as experienced as him. He was very nurturing and sweet.’

During that same event, lifelong friend and Grease co-star Travolta praised her positive outlook on life, despite her health worries.

He said: ‘Olivia is a survivor and she’s smart and she’s got a lot of life in her and I think she looks at it from the glass half full always and that’s her beautiful, natural approach towards life and I think we all need to do that.’

He was among the first to pay tribute to her on Monday.

Anne Heche is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since car crash | Anne Heche

Anne Heche has not regained consciousness since shortly after she crashed her car in Los Angeles on Friday.

Initial reports about the actor’s condition said she was “stable” and firefighters said she had spoken to rescuers as she was pulled from the wreckage.

However, on Monday a spokesperson for Heche, 53, said: “Despite previous reports that Heche was stable, shortly after the accident, [she] became unconscious, slipping into a coma and is in critical condition.”

Heche’s representatives added: “At this time Anne is in extreme critical condition. She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention.

On Saturday Heche’s publicist had said that her condition was “stable” and her family asked for “thoughts and prayers”. The previous morning, reports suggested Heche had been driving at speed down a street before crashing into a house.

This caused what the Los Angeles Fire Department described as a “heavy fire”, which took a number of firefighters an hour to extinguish.

The occupant of the house escaped without injury but the building was deemed uninhabitable. A fundraising page has been set up to help the owner replace her belongings and her home.

The nextdoor neighbors told Fox News that the car had ploughed right through the house. “The windows were broken, so I opened the back door of the car. She [Heche] answered and said she was not OK, so that was tough. I know they didn’t get her out of the car until the fire was pretty much put out.”

Heche, who has one son, is best known for his roles in films such as Psycho, Donnie Brasco, Six Days Seven Nights and Cedar Rapids.

I married young and I’m consumed with regret over all the sexual experiences I’ll never have | life and style

I am a happily married man of more than 20 years, with a wonderful home and life that I would not change for anything. I met and married remove young and – while I enjoyed various sexual encounters before settling down – have always had a nagging feeling that I missed out on certain experiences. Some are quite ambitious, such as to three-some; others are more mundane, such as a one-night stand. I do enjoy my sex life but am sometimes overwrought by thoughts that I never “completed the album”, as it were. Yo soy starting to resent people who have had more experiences, as if it’s a competition, even when I know that other aspects of my life have turned out far better than theirs. While I am happy, and would never dream of venturing outside my marriage to address a probably overexaggerated wish list, how can I get rid of this overwhelming feeling that I have missed out and there is a gap I will never be able to fill?

Try to see these thoughts as fantasies – wonderful expressions of healthy eroticism that can serve as a means of keeping you sexually alive – and even enhancing your sexual drive to be intimate with your wife. Please do not take this to mean that you should fantasize about other people while making love with your wife… it is best to be truly present with her. I mean that fantasies serve a purpose – either to facilitate arousal, masturbation, or a general sense of private pleasure and sexual vibrancy. Unfortunately, you have connected these feelings with regret and a sense of longing, and you are not alone in that. Studies have shown that most people think about and fantasize about having sex with someone other than their spouse. Fortunately, you seem too smart to bow to peer pressure or risk losing the life you have for what is really just an ephemeral notion.

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, creator of Steve Job’s turtlenecks, dies of cancer aged 84

Tributes have flowed for Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake after his death due to liver cancer.

The iconic designer died of hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer, on August 5, according to Kyodo news agency.

He was 84.

No further details were immediately available.

Known for his practicality, Miyake is said to have wanted to become either a dancer or an athlete before reading his sister’s fashion magazines inspired him to change direction — with those original interests believed to be behind the freedom of movement his clothing permits.

“When I close my eyes, I still see things no one should ever experience,” he wrote, adding that within three years his mother died of radiation exposure.

“I have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to put them behind me, preferring to think of things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy.

After studying graphic design at a Tokyo art university, he learned clothing design in Paris, where he worked with famed fashion designers Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy, before heading to New York.

In 1970 he returned to Tokyo and founded the Miyake Design Studio.

In the late 1980s he developed a new way of pleating by wrapping fabrics between layers of paper and putting them into a heat press, with the garments holding their pleated shape.

Tested for their freedom of movement on dancers, this led to the development of his signature “Pleats, Please” line.

He then developed more than a dozen fashion lines ranging from his main Issey Miyake for men and women to bags, watches and fragrances before essentially retiring in 1997 to devote himself to research.

In 2016, when asked what he thought were the challenges facing future designers, he indicated to the UK’s Guardian newspaper that people were likely to be consuming less.

“We may have to go through a thinning process. This is important,” he was quoted as saying.

“In Paris, we call the people who make clothing couturiers — they develop new clothing items — but actually the work of designing is to make something that works in real life.”

Today’s Karl Stefanovic shocks as he STRIPS live on-air

Karl Stefanovic has shocked viewers and Today co-host Allison Langdon as he stripped off during the breakfast program.

He returned to the show on Monday morning after a two-week break, making sure his presence did not go unnoticed.

The host was interviewing lawn bowls champion Aaron ‘Disco’ Wilson who famously ripped his shirt off while celebrating a win at the Commonwealth Games.

Joking around with the hosts, Aaron said he was happy to rip his gear off again.

“You go first then I’ll go,” Karl said.

“Show me yours I’ll show you mine,” Aaron replied.

“He’s doing it Disco,” Ally is heard saying.

Aaron then undoes his jacket and takes it off before Karl takes it one step further.

The host then unknotted his tie and removed it before he slowly started to unbutton his shirt.

“Tell me when it’s over,” Ally says in shock.

She then claims it’s “taking too long” before she screams when Karl rips his shirt open.

Karl then laughs and claps before he high-fives Ally.

Viewers praised the morning TV host on a video Today posted on Instagram with the caption: “Filing this video under ‘things I didn’t think I would see today’.”

“So good to have Karl back,” one fan wrote.

“Love Karl,” another said.

“We haven’t missed you,” a third jokingly commented.

It comes after fans were concerned about Karl’s recent absence from the breakfast program after Today posted a cryptic photo on its Instagram.

The photo featured presenters Brooke Boney, Tim Davies, Charles Croucher, Allison Langdon, Christine Ahern and Alex Cullen sitting in the Today studio.

While Karl didn’t join them on the couch, he was photoshopped into the snap, sitting on the coffee table.

Fans were curious as to why Karl had been seemingly absent from Today.

‘This was her dream’: Olivia Newton-John’s legacy lives on at cancer research center | Olivia Newton-John

It’s not often a medical institute has to say it is unable to take calls because of overwhelming demand, but that was the case on Tuesday at Melbourne’s Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, after the death of the 73-year-old singer and actor.

Newton-John has been one of Australia’s most high-profile campaigners for the advancement of cancer research and treatment since her initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 1992 at the age of 44.

The Cancer Council Victoria said the entertainer’s impact on cancer research and awareness had been far reaching.

“Olivia was a pioneer in the cancer field and her work provided inspiration for many,” the chief executive, Todd Harper, said in a statement.

“Her advocacy enabled the work of dedicated scientists advancing scientific discoveries and offered hope to many affected by a cancer diagnosis.

“She led the focus on wellness and the importance of physical, emotional and spiritual support not only for the person going through a cancer diagnosis but their carers, families and friends.

“Olivia’s impact can’t be overstated, and her legacy will continue in the work of world-leading research, treatment and care.”

The cancer center sits within Austin Health, one of Victoria’s major public health providers.

The chief executive of Austin Health, Adam Horsburgh, told Guardian Australia that Newtown-John’s commitment over the past decade had been integral to Austin’s scientific developments, breakthrough therapies and advancements in patient psychological care.

“Without her drive and her commitment, the center would not be here,” he said. “And her ongoing support from her over many years has ensured the success of the centre.

“It has enabled us to provide care and support to thousands of patients over the past 10 years.”

The ONJ center opened in June 2012, beginning as an outpatient ambulatory center then expanding to provide inpatient wards.

It is involved in about 200 clinical trials for a variety of cancers, including brain, bowel, breast, melanoma, gastrointestinal, head and neck, pancreatic, prostate and lung cancer.

The director of the Austin Health Foundation, the organization’s fundraising arm, Debbie Shiell, told ABC radio on Tuesday the center would not have been created if not for Newton-John.

“There’s no two ways about it,” Shiell said.

“This was her dream and this was her legacy, and it was something that she was really proud of.

“I remember when I was talking with her about it, and she drove around the corner and saw her name up on the building, she said it was better than any billboard she has ever seen.

“She’s so proud of the work she’s done with us here.”

On Instagram, Newton-John’s husband, John Easterling, requested that instead of flowers, mourners make donations to the ONJ centre.

After her original 1992 diagnosis, the entertainer underwent further treatment for a recurrence in 2013.

In September 2018, Newton-John announced her breast cancer had returned for the third time, metastasising in her lower spine.

Following the third diagnosis she told the Seven Network’s Sunday Night program that she was attempting to treat the illness “naturally”.

By this stage Newton-John had become a strong proponent of the use of cannabis oil to treat her pain symptoms, sourced from Easterling’s California marijuana farming business.

Compared with a significant swathe of OECD countries, Australian’s access to medicinal cannabis is limited and remains fraught with bureaucratic obstacles.

Australian entertainment icons who have faced their own battles with cancer, Kylie Minogue and Delta Goodrem, have both paid tribute to the UK-born, Melbourne-raised singer, who was admitted to Aria’s Hall of Fame in 2002 and made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2019.

“Since I was 10 years old, I have loved and looked up to Olivia Newton-John. And, I always will,” tweeted Minogue, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 36.

“She was, and always will be, an inspiration to me in so many, many ways.”

Goodrem, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 18 and who played Newton-John in the 2018 miniseries Hopelessly Devoted to You, posted on Instagram: “The whole world will feel this heartbreak today because the entire world felt Olivia’s unmatched light. ”

“I don’t have all the words I would like to say today, but I hope everyone will join in celebrating our beloved Olivia, her heart, soul, talent, courage, grace … I love you forever.”

In 2020, Goodrem launched her own foundation, in conjunction with Sydney’s St. Vincent’s hospital and the Kinghorn Cancer Centre, to raise funds for blood cancer research.

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson’s breakup explained

Pete has had a lot of high-profile romances for someone his age. the King of Staten Island actor is only 28, but has dated some of the world’s most famous women. And while Pete was a familiar face from his work de él on Saturday night Liveit was arguably his relationship with Ariana Grande that kicked off his mega-fame.

The pair revealed they were in a relationship in May of 2018. Having fallen hard, they got engaged just a few weeks later.

However, five months later, they called things off, with Pete apparently covering up a neck tattoo he’d gotten in honor of the 7 Rings singer.

Pete’s preference for older women became apparent in his next relationship with Kate Beckinsale, who was 20 years his senior.

Pete and Kate were first linked at the 2019 Golden Globes afterparty, and were confirmed to be together when they were seen making out at a Rangers game in March.

They’d called it quits by April, however.

“Even though Kate has been in Hollywood for a long time, she struggled with the attention on her relationship with Pete,” an insider revealed at the time.

“He lives his life with his heart on his sleeve,” they added, and we couldn’t agree more.

Pete briefly dated Margaret Qualley, the actress daughter of Andie MacDowell, from August to October 2019.

This was Pete’s second short relationship with someone his age in two years, marking the start of a pattern that wouldn’t be broken until Kim came on the scene.

Pete dated Kaia Gerber next, kicking things off in October 2019.

At the time, Kaia was only about 17, and it was reported that her parents hoped the romance would fizzle quickly, given the difference in age.

Luckily for them, it was over by January 2020, when Pete checked into rehab and attempted to manage some mental health issues.

“She’s very young, and I’m f—ing going through a lot and it was before I went to rehab,” he explained in February.

Pete briefly dated Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor before he took up with Kim.

Rumors of a romance with the British star took off in March 2021, when Pete flew to the UK to spend time with the period drama actress.

He confirmed in April that he was dating his “celebrity crush” as pictures of them to emerge in the media.

However, like most of Pete’s relationships, it was over before it really began, with the pair reportedly splitting in August – five months later.

With the exceptions of Kaia and Kate, most of Pete’s girlfriends have been roughly his age, and with barely any exceptions, he hasn’t been with any of them for long.

So, it was expected his love for Kim would be somewhat brief.

Also, it’s worth noting the major difference in life stages for the pair. While Pete has turned 28 during his relationship with Kim, Kim turned 41.

She’s also a mum to four young kids – North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm. And while it’s reported Pete got a tattoo in their honor of her, it’s probably unlikely he was ready to step up as stepdad.

A source confirmed that this might have been the reason for the split.

“Pete is 28 and Kim is 41 – they are just in very different places at the moment,” they told Page Six.

What can I expect in the first trimester of pregnancy?

Telling people feels… hard. Because you have to watch their excitement, and then what if you have to break their heart in a few weeks???

We told our parents around week eight, after seeing the heartbeat in the dating scan.

I told a few friends early on, but I waited until I was in my second trimester to tell work and my wider social circles. It felt right for me, but I hated it.

I hate secrets. I suck at them. Thankfully, I could easily hide my sickness, but having to turn up to work and pretend like something huge wasn’t happening to me, it was really, really, really hard. I am the kind of person who deals with things by speaking about them so for me, it’s probably been the hardest part.

Reflecting on it, I keep thinking about the age-old saying: “You never know what someone is going through. Be kind. Always.”

I needed that default kindness from others more than ever during my first trimester.

4. Your uterus will start doing some very weird things.

My Google history is whack.

I feel like everyone is familiar with what bloating feels like, and there’s a lot of that during pregnancy.

But not long after I found out I was pregnant, around week four to five, I started to feel this odd ‘tugging’ feeling in my tummy.

It wasn’t painful; it was just noticeable. Like a tiny little man was standing in my uterus and pulling at the walls.

Apparently it’s just normal growing uterus stuff, but I was definitely not prepared for that.

Towards the end of my first trimester, I started to get round ligament pain which for me feels like growing pain, up and down the sides of my abdomen. There’s been a few days where I’ve had to take painkillers because it’s been so intense.

Once again, weird. I was not expecting that.

5. Every woman’s body is different and grows at different rates. Stop comparing.

I am a tall gal – 173cm tall to be exact.

I was also very lean and fit when I fell pregnant.

By the time I had reached 12 to 13 weeks, I barely looked pregnant. But I was obsessed with ‘looking’ pregnant, because women on the internet did.

I lost myself in TikTok hashtags like #8weekspregnant and #12weekspregnant and found myself getting worried because lots of those women had proper obvious bumps already.

But as my doctor explained, I have a long torso and a baby therefore has a lot more room in my uterus before I have to start growing outwards.
