Cutting costs, merging, shelving Batgirl: is this the end of HBO Max? | Warner Bros

The drama has been coming thick and fast at the AT&T-owned entertainment behemoth Warner Bros Discovery – unfortunately for the company, and its viewers, the action is all taking place in its boardrooms.

The company was formed after the spin-off of WarnerMedia by AT&T and its merger with Discovery in April last year, media watchers have been waiting to see how the new media powerhouse would reshape its business. Now a plan, of sorts, is emerging.

First, the studio announced plans to permanently shelve an already-shot Batgirl movie to the tune of an estimated $90m loss, a puzzling move explained in an official statement as symptomatic of a larger shift in company doctrine away from streaming, though more obscure imperatives of tax accounting surely played a role as well.

HBO Max subscribers then began combing the library and noticed that a handful of the original films produced for the platform had been quietly removed; the Seth Rogen vehicle American Pickle, for one, now exists only as a $3.99 rental from iTunes.

Rumors of staff layoffs and series cancellations swirled until the bomb was finally dropped by Warner/Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav, during a second-quarter earnings report last Thursday: in 2023, HBO Max and Discovery Plus would be combined into a single entity, ideally with a name that doesn’t sound like a brand of batteries.

The decision to demolish the HBO Max brand and start over on the vacant lot it will leave behind comes as a shock to industry observers, who have watched as Warner went all in on streaming during the pandemic’s housebound early days.

The company caused a stir with “Project Popcorn”, an unorthodox business model under which they released their 2021 slate of films to HBO Max on the same day they hit theaters. Upwards of a dozen big-ticket titles – including The Suicide Squad, Cry Macho and In the Heights – materialized in America’s living rooms free of additional charge, an obvious ding to theatrical exhibition meant to funnel viewers into the streaming way of the future.

3D-chess-brained thinking yielded to good old common sense as executives noticed that it’s difficult to get people to pay for what they already have at home. Hopeful earners Dune, The Matrix: Resurrections and Space Jam 2 all underperformed at the box office, and time had come for a course correction.

During a report that sometimes played like a sweaty all-is-well press conference out of Succession, Zaslav pushed the headline of theatrical releasing’s comeback in no uncertain terms. “We will fully embrace theatrical,” he declared, laying out a development slate with a lessened emphasis on straight-to-streaming productions.

Anyone dedicated to the cause of cinema can see reason to rejoice in a renewed commitment to the forever-imperiled theatrical experience, the most optimistic among us envisioning a mini-boom for original concepts from distinctive artists. But Warners is far from the first studio to step out with the daring strategy of releasing only good movies instead of bad ones, an overhaul more easier said than put into practice.

The tone of the recent earnings call erred on the side of corporate inanity, particularly in how the C-suite understands the utility and future of HBO Max. One slideshow card summarily circulated as a meme on social media broke down the presumed appeal of the service, as contrasted with Discovery Plus.

Whereas HBO Max is “male skew”, “lean in” and “home of fandoms”; Discovery Plus is “female skew”, “lean back” and “home of genredoms”. The reasoning that “HBO equals Game of Thrones, which dudes like” versus “Discovery Plus equals Property Brothers, beloved of women” betrays a major misapprehension about the broader potential for these services, which could be hubs for a wider sampling of material catering to omnivorous tastes.

As much as the service has come a graveyard for its streaming-exclusive films, both deservedly (bland Roald Dahl adaptation The Witches, pandemic rush job Locked) and not (school shooting drama The Fallout and techno-thriller Kimi, both of which deserved higher profiles), it has found greater success in the series format.

The Flight Attendant and Hacks garnered attention from Emmy voters, Station Eleven and Tokyo Vice showed the seedlings of cult followings, and Our Flag Means Death boasted some of the best reviews of any debut in its season. Numbers aside, though HBO Max’s subscriber base dwarfs that of Discovery Plus by a margin in the dozens of millions, it was a success on the sole basis of bringing good entertainment to the people. The mad fusion of HBO Max with Discovery Plus – home of the 90 Day Fiancée Universe, the Food Network, and other reality TV stalwarts – runs the risk of losing the exploratory spirit that gave fan-beloved series like Search Party and The Other Two a home.

The real richness of the HBO Max project lay in its indefiniteness; without a daily schedule to fill or strict runtime requirements dictated by ad sales, it could have been a bastion for experimentation. Look at Terence Nance’s curious, boundary-busting sketch program Random Acts of Flyness on HBO proper, a heartening example of the greatness fostered when a budget and creative freedom are handed to an idiosyncratic talent.

Rather than a claustrophobic holding pen for franchise pictures meant to unfurl in an auditorium, the automatic platform could have been a valuable breeding ground for up-and-comers ready for a bump in exposure. It still could, one supposes, based on the vague language Zaslav has used about streaming’s cloudy future.

the pictographic representation of this bright new day, however, doesn’t inspire much confidence. A perfectly circular blob labeled “Content” feeds a chevron-shaped block emblazoned with “Streaming”, flanked above and below by “Movies” and “TV”. So long as the stewards of art continue to see it as indiscriminate product to be moved around in rejiggered combinations, the renaissance they’re waiting for won’t come any time soon.

G Flip gushed over girlfriend Chrishell Stause in a sweet Instagram post on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Australian musician, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, had asked her Instagram followers to give them recommendations for a Los Angeles based tattoo artists.

Fans then suggested that they get Chrishell, 41, to do the honors, as they had previously let the Selling Sunset star ink a message on their thigh.

Sharing a throwback snap of the tattoo session, G Flip then quipped that Chrishell was too busy ‘focusing on being hecktikly cute & sexIIII [sic].’

Back in May, G Flip — born Georgia Flipo — had allowed the real estate star to ink a scrawled ‘Get Me Outta Here’ on their thigh.

Although G Flip had previously posted photos of the aftermath in May, the video proved that it was their girlfriend responsible for the tattoo.

‘Thank you everyone recommending @chrishell.stause. Her books by Ella are currently closed and she is focusing on being hecktikly cute & sexiiii, ‘G Flip captioned the clip, adding a kissing emoji.

The couple set off engagement rumors in July when Chrishell was seen wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring on her left ring finger, but a rep for the reality star subsequently denied that they were engaged.

‘They seem like a bada**, for one,’ he said of G Flip. ‘And two, the smile that’s been on your face the last couple [of] minutes makes me very happy. So I’m proud of you.’

She and the Oppenheim Group CEO ended their five-month-long relationship back in December 2021.

Mad Max Furiosa suspended for a week as George Miller isolates with Covid

EXCLUSIVE: Mad Max blockbuster Furiosa forced to SHUT DOWN Sydney production for a week after legendary director George Miller contracts Covid

Production on the latest Mad Max installation Furiosa has been shut down in Sydney after legendary director George Miller caught Covid.

The Daily Mail Australia can reveal the production, which has been under way in a number of locations in and around Sydney since June, has been suspended for a week with all on-screen filming halted until at least August 15.

It’s understood Miller, 77, tested positive to Covid early this week and has been forced to isolate at his Sydney home.

The multi-million dollar production, which is currently based on location in Kurnell just south of Sydney, will resume filming next week.

Furiosa producers have been contacted for comment.

The setback echoes Miller’s infamous shoot for Mad Max: Fury Road back in 2012 which was plagued by a number of costly delays and production issues.

The shoot initially began in Namibia but encountered some public relations hiccups after the Namibian Conservation Coast and Management Project accused the producers of damaging a number of plant and animal species in a leaked draft.

The filmmakers later dismissed these reports as ‘rhetoric’.

Re-shoots later took place in Potts Hill and Penrith Lakes in Western Sydney but poor weather led to a number of delays.

Years later it was also revealed that tensions between Mad Max: Fury Road stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy also led to major disruptions on set, with Theron later admitting she demanded protection from Hardy at one point.

Speaking to writer Kyle Buchanan for his book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron said Hardy’s lateness on set caused tension which almost derailed the film entirely.

After Hardy arrived to set several hours late one day, Theron asked the British actor; ‘How disrespectful are you?’ and said the producers should ‘fine the f—— c— a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew’.

Hardy responded by ‘charging up to her’ and saying: ‘What did you say to me?’

The Oscar winning actress later confirmed the pair had ‘settled’ their differences.

The film went on to gross almost $400 million globally and won six Oscars.

Furiosa is a prequel to Fury Road with Anya Taylor-Joy playing a younger Theron in the titular role to headline the post-apocalyptic blockbuster.

Taylor-Joy and co-star Chris Hemsworth were snapped for the first time on set just prior to the current shutdown, with both donning red wigs for their roles.

Details of Hemsworth’s character in the film have been kept under wraps by Miller and insiders at studio Warner Bros, with his role officially defined as ‘unspecified’.

Kate Middleton and Prince William send reply to little girl who invited Prince George to her sixth birthday party

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge must get a plethora of invitations to various events around the world, but it was their son prince george who was the subject of a rather sweet invite recently.

The prince was asked to celebrate the sixth birthday of a young girl but unfortunately he was unable to attend.

The girl’s mother received a response from prince william and Kate, who said they were “immensely touched” by invitation.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked me to thank you for your letter, in which you invite Prince George to your 6th Birthday party,” the letter from Prince William and Kate read, reports Hello magazine.

“I am sorry that it took so long to reply.

“Their Royal Highnesses were extremely grateful for your kind invitation. Having given careful consideration to the possibilities, however, I very much regret that Their Royal Highnesses reluctantly feel they have to decline.

It’s unclear whether Prince George knows the girl personally or whether she just had hopes of the future King attending her birthday party.

George recently celebrated his own birthday, turning nine on July 22.

He is currently on school holidays with Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four.

They are due to start at a new school in September when they move from Kensington Palace in London to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.

Adelaide Cottage meets the Cambridges’ desire for a “modest home” and being set within the large Windsor estate, it will give the children the privacy to play, ride their horses and walk their dog Orla without risk of being photographed.

The four-bedroom home will allow the family to be closer to Queen Elizabeth.

The monarch now permanently lives at Windsor Castle, a stone’s throw from the new home.

For the first time, all three Cambridge children will attend the same school, rumored to be Lambrook School, in Ascot, near Windsor Castle.

Before embarking on their new chapter at Windsor, the Cambridges are expected to join the Queen at Balmoral Castle where Her Majesty is enjoying a three-month summer getaway.

A woman for all seasons, Newton-John will remain something specific and personal to each of us

But it was not Olivia’s first movie. that was toomorrow, a 1970 British science fiction musical from James Bond producer Harry Saltzman which landed with a thud. It took two years to make and lasted only a week in cinemas. Asked about it by American interviewer Mike Douglas on the eve of the premiere of greaseOlivia spoke with typical Australian frankness: “It was pretty bad.”

Even Olivia’s stellar turn in grease might itself have never come to pass: she was not producer Alan Carr and director Randal Kleiser’s first choice for the role of Sandy. Carrie Fisher (starwars) and Susan Dey (The Partridge Family) were. The role was also offered to Marie Osmond, of Donny & Marie fame, who passed because she was uncomfortable with Sandy’s transformation from sweet to sexy in the film’s dénouement.

Like many Hollywood stories, however, the hand of fate intervened. Another legendary Australian, singer Helen Reddy, threw a dinner party in Los Angeles and invited Carr who ended up sitting across the table from Olivia. As Carr tells it, the moment they started speaking, he knew he had found his Sandy from her.

It was Olivia, Carr would later say, who needed persuading to say yes. She had been burned by her experience de ella on toomorrow and did not want to jeopardize a successful music career with another roll of the dice on silver screen fame. To persuade her of her, Carr changed Sandy from an American (as she is in the Broadway show) to an Australian, allowing Olivia to use her native accent.

“She had a brilliant voice, and I didn’t think there could be any more correct person for Sandy in the universe,” Travolta would later tellVanity Fair. “I never let up on it. I insisted that we cast her”.

loading

despues de Grease’s success – New York Times′ Vincent Canby described the film as “a larger, funnier, wittier and more imaginative-than-Hollywood movie with a life that is all its own” – Olivia’s American star was properly lit.

Her films were not always commercially successful, though. Xanadu and Two of a Kind, which reunited her with Travolta, were notable failures at the time, but Olivia somehow spun musical gold out of box office straw. the Xanadu soundtrack, a collaboration between Olivia and the Electric Light Orchestra, was a hit. and Two of a Kind gave her three more hits: Twist of Fate, Take a Chance and Livin’ in Desperate Times.

then there was Physical, which came with a provocative, neon-powered music video that encapsulated the 1980s in just three minutes and 44 seconds. And Koala Blue, a retail empire that began with a single store on Los Angeles’ trendy Melrose Avenue and grew to 60 stores worldwide.

Like many things about the 1980s, however, as the blue eyeshadow faded, so did the business model. In the third act of her life, Olivia divided her time between Australia and California and focused on health and wellness, in part due to her own cancer diagnosis. She still wrote and recorded music, releasing work that was perhaps her most artful and creatively nuanced de ella, even if it could never match the commercial enormity of Grease’s infectious, campy hits.

The measure of her legacy is the outpouring of love and reflection which followed the announcement of her death. “You made all of our lives so much better,” grease co-star John Travolta said. “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours, from the moment I saw you and forever. Your Danny, your John.”

Another longtime friend, singer Lorna Luft, who played the Pink Lady Paulette Rebchuck in grease 2, described Olivia as an angel on Earth. “We shared being part of the grease family, we also shared our battle [with cancer]. [You] brought awareness, dignity, honesty, knowledge and class to [your] fight and no one fought harder. [Your] phenomenal talent, generosity and friendship was unequaled.”

grease Principal Kleiser said he was heartbroken. “Ella She was one of a kind, and so very kind,” he said. “For over four decades of our friendship, she exuded nothing but love to everyone she met. Olivia was exactly the way you imagined her.” And her grease co-star Stockard Channing spoke of “her sunshine, her warmth and her grace. I don’t know if I’ve known a lovelier human being.”

Actor Viola Davis thanked Olivia for creating “eternal memories”. And Olivia’s friend de ella, pop star Rod Stewart, described her as “the perfect lady, gorgeous, with great poise and with a certain Aussie sophistication”. Australia’s own Kylie Minogue reflected on how, since she was a child, she “loved and looked up to Olivia Newton-John. She was, and she always will be, an inspiration to me in so many, many ways”.

loading

My own encounters with her were often unexpected and always delightful. We sat next to each other at British producer Nigel Lythgoe’s wedding in Las Vegas. And we shared a mutual friend in Luft. On one occasion, when the three of us were together, at Sydney’s Mardi Gras, Olivia and Lorna took great delight in introducing themselves to strangers as “Grease 1” and “Grease 2″.

Olivia will always be something specific and personal to each of us. In beloved motion pictures, like grease and Xanadu, which evoke memories of our shared childhoods. And in still images, where her innocence and gentle demeanour of her, and her radiant beauty of her, are frozen in time. Olivia Newton-John and Sandy Olsson, forever, one and the same.

Olivia died Monday at the age of 73 surrounded by family at her California ranch after withdrawing from the public eye as her health deteriorated.

She had a roller-coaster 30-year battle with breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in 1992 and which came back in 2013 and 2017.

During her life she was an enthusiastic advocate for breast cancer research, even trekking over 228kms along the Great Wall Of China as a fundraiser to build a cancer and wellness center in Melbourne, where she was largely raised.

In 2020 Rebel embarked on a Year Of Health and lost almost 80lbs – nearly a decade after she starred with Olivia in the Australian comedy A Few Best Men.

She wrote to Olivia: ‘You were the most gorgeous lady inside and out, you are a true Aussie icon and to play your daughter on screen in A FEW BEST MEN was beyond an honour.

‘Seeing you star in the huge Hollywood blockbuster GREASE with your natural accent was so instrumental to me as a little girl, helping me to believe that it was possible for an Aussie girl to star in huge international musicals.’

Rebel went on to star in major Hollywood musicals herself when she became a scene-stealing presence in the Pitch Perfect films.

In her post about Olivia she recalled: ‘You were the reason I auditioned for my high school production of GREASE at 15 – I was only in the chorus, but it was a start!’

Rebel added: ‘You tried to teach me about health years before I took it seriously. You were so kind to me and it was such a blessing to know you Olivia.

‘I’ll never forget us singing at the piano in our lunch break on set together – what a complete legend you are! I am so sad you are gone Love and Light always to you ONJ, Rebel xoxo’.

Earlier this year Rebel revealed that her staggering 80lbs weight loss was inspired by her desire to eventually become a mother.

For years she has been candid about the fact that she was looking at the prospect of freezing her eggs, which was an influence on her decision to slim down.

Covering People this May, Rebel revealed that a fertility specialist ‘looked me up and down and said: ‘You’d do much better if you were healthier.”

Although her reflex response was to think he was ‘so rude,’ she eventually came to the conclusion the doctor ‘was right. I was carrying around a lot of excess weight.’

She has insisted her fitness journey ‘wasn’t a goal to get to a certain weight. It was just being the healthiest version of myself.’

Rebel, who is 5’3′, has previously credited Vivamayr, a luxury medical center and holistic retreat in Lake Altaussee, Austria, for her astonishing weight loss journey.

Now she has revealed that the process of improving her health involved ‘dealing with the emotional issues that caused me to emotionally eat, and that’s a process. You cry a lot, analyze things. I’d never done that before.’

Fran Kelly to host ABC’s new prime-time chatshow Frankly | Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Broadcaster Fran Kelly, who left Radio National Breakfast in December after 17 years, is returning to the ABC with a new Friday night chatshow in front of a live audience and a house rock band.

The prime-time show, called Frankly, has been billed as “glitzy” and will feature the former political journalist talking to actors, musicians, “big thinkers” and “change makers”.

It’s a change of pace for the veteran ABC broadcaster whose career has focused on hard news and political interviews for three decades, despite having a background as a musician.

Kelly studied arts at the University of Adelaide, was previously a singer in several bands in the late 1970s and 80s and an arts administrator before moving into journalism.

She got her first job at the ABC as a reporter on Triple J’s Hack program in 1988 when she was 29.

RN Breakfast has been breaking news for years, but this morning we’ve got some breaking news of our own.

“I’m so excited about this new show,” Kelly said on Wednesday, when the show went into production at ABC TV.

“Leaving RN Breakfast was bittersweet… I’m loving the sleep-ins but missing all those incredible conversations with fabulous guests from around Australia and the world.

“People have been asking ever since what’s next for me. Well this is it and I can’t wait. More great conversations, a live audience and my own band … what’s not to be excited about. It’s such a privilege and going to be so much fun.”

Kelly worked in the Canberra press gallery for 10 years and in 2001 was political editor for ABC TV’s 7.30 before a stint as the ABC’s Europe correspondent based in London.

Since stepping down from RN Breakfast, Kelly has appeared across radio and TV as a political commentator, covered the federal election and co-hosted a podcast with her Breakfast successor, Patricia Karvelas.

When Kelly announced her retirement from daily current affairs radio she wasn’t clear what her next career move would be.

“Sometimes I feel like every hour of my day is mapped out by what I need to achieve in that hour in order to be able to deliver the show the next morning, so it will be nice to breathe out a little,” Kelly told Guardian Australia in December.

Frankly will be produced in-house by the ABC’s entertainment division.

“Fran brings such a warmth and depth of intelligence we couldn’t be more excited to invite the audience in to hear her chat with the most interesting and electrifying people on the planet,” the head of entertainment, Nick Hayden, said.

The last chatshow on the ABC was Adam Hills’s in Gordon Street Tonight, co-starring comedians Hannah Gadsby and Dave O’Neil, which ended in 2013. Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope talkshow, co-created with producer Anita Jacoby, ran between 2003 and 2008 .

The ABC has not released a date or a time-slot for the show yet.
