A 73-year-old California woman who worked as a lookout, watching for wildfires from US Forest Service towers in Siskiyou County, died in the McKinney Fire, officials said.
Kathy Shoopman’s first post was in 1974 at the Baldy Mountain lookout in the Klamath National Forest, just west of the small town of Happy Camp, a statement from the US Forest Service said. She went on to staff the Buckhorn and Lake Mountain lookouts.
For nearly 50 years, Shoopman lived in Klamath River (pop. 200), a town that was nearly entirely wiped out by flames. Homes, including those in a trailer park, a community hall and a few other businesses were destroyed. “That fire came down on the community with 60 to 70 mph winds coming down on it,” said Tom Stokesberry, the US Forest Service’s northern operations fire public affairs specialist.
“We share this sorrow with each and every one of you and we know that individually, and as the supportive community that we are, we will find many ways to honor Kathy’s life and service and keep her spirit in all of our lives,” the Forest Service said in a Facebook post honoring Shoopman.

Stokesberry said it’s his understanding that Shoopman was trying to evacuate when she died, but the circumstances of her death are still under investigation.
“When the fire made its initial push, she was caught in her home,” Stokesberry said.
Lookouts work shifts in towers that are situated on tall peaks and rise above forestland that’s at risk for wildfires. Their job is to identify fires when they first start and are small and easy to put out.
“She was one of the best,” Stokesberry said. “She is a legend in the lookout community. Ella she was not only able to identify the fires, but she could locate them with pinpoint accuracy.

The McKinney Fire, now the largest in the state this year, ignited near the California-Oregon border on July 29, quickly exploding into a raging monster that killed four people, including Shoopman. It destroyed more than 100 homes as it tore through 60,379 acres; it is 40% contained as of Monday.
How your personality could be stopping you from losing weight – so which of the six types do you fit into?
Scientists say your personality type could be preventing you from losing weight
There are 6 groups: cravers, thinkers, socialisers, pleasers, foodies and battlers
Australian expert Dr Emily Brindal says we must tailor our approach to our type
She found the two most common types of dieters are thinkers and battlers

Scientists believe they have discovered the secret to losing weight – and it all comes down to personality.
Experts from Australia’s leading scientific agency CSIRO claim humans fit into six main personality types which are each suited to a different form of diet.
The most common types of dieters are ‘thinkers’ and ‘battlers’, according to a groundbreaking new CSIRO study, which says understanding which category you fall into could be the key to maintaining a healthy weight and the body of your dreams.
Accounting for 14.1 percent of 254,000 participants, ‘thinkers’ are motivated, analytical people with clear goals and ambitions for the future.

The six diet personality types
1. Thinkers: Motivated, analytical and goal-oriented people who are sensitive to negative feedback. Stress and anxiety can derail their diet.
2. Battlers: Prone to stress, anxiety and temptation to make poor food choices. Require strategies to help break the cycle.
3. Cravers: Have the highest BMI of all diet types and are those most likely to experience overwhelming cravings that lead to binge eating.
4. Pleasers: Likeable, friendly people who are sensitive to criticism. Need to surround themselves with positive reinforcement.
5. Foodies: Passionate about everything related to food. Eats the most balanced diet of all personality types.
6. Socialisers: Require flexibility in their diet to stop restrictions stifling the fun of occasions. Otherwise, they will fall off the wagon.

The report claims they are sensitive to negative feedback that can lead to stress or anxiety, which is the primary cause of derailing their diet.
Coming a close second with 12.8 percent of respondents are ‘battlers’, who are prone to stress, anxiety and temptation to make poor food choices.
As a result, the study says battlers need strategies that help them to break the cycle if they want to lose weight and keep it off.
The four other diet types identified in the report are ‘cravers’, ‘pleasers’, ‘foodies’ and ‘socialisers’.
‘Cravers’ have the highest body mass index, according to the study, and are those most likely to experience overwhelming food cravings that may lead to binge eating.

Meanwhile it says ‘pleasers’ are likeable, friendly people who may be sensitive to social comparisons and criticism, which means it’s important for them to surround themselves with positive reinforcement.
‘Socialisers’ are those who need flexibility to stop dietary restrictions from stifling social events or ‘killing the mood’ of an occasion, according to the report.
Finally ‘foodies’ are passionate about everything to do with food, including preparing and eating good quality meals.
The study found this personality type eats the most balanced diet of the six.
CSIRO research scientist Dr Emily Brindal, lead author of the recent study, says it is crucial for Australians who are trying to lose weight to understand their diet types (stock images)
CSIRO research scientist Dr Emily Brindal, lead author of the recent study, says it is crucial for Australians who are trying to lose weight to understand their diet types.
‘Too often diets are developed with a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores the fact that some people behave or think differently to others,’ Dr Brindal told Sunrise.
She added: ‘Working with your diet type could help you achieve better weight loss outcomes in the longer term.’

In November 2020, a week after JOE BIDEN was declared the winner of the presidential election, a Chinese illustrator named YANG QUAN posted several cartoons on his Weibo microblog account depicting the president-elect as evil and seemingly all-powerful.
“The sleeping king ascends the throne, the devil is resurrected,” reads the Chinese caption on one illustration of Biden atop an Iron Throne-esque chair made up of automatic weapons as a hellish blaze surrounds him. Yang has posted many other images in the 20 months since — often with pro-China, nationalistic messages.
Those images were largely forgotten…. until this past week, when they went viral in the United States as Democrats co-opted them as part of a meme dubbed “Dark Brandon.”
Far from the portrayal Yang set out to create, it’s been fashioned into a boast, depicting Biden playing five-dimensional chess, a master of the political dark arts.
“’Dark Brandon’ is the Malevolent kind of Biden we need,” wrote Mel Magazine last month.
Biden is no stranger to being mememed. During the Obama years he was portrayed as the bumbling “Uncle Joe,” always blurting out something off key and obsessing over his aviators and Corvette. As president, he’s been punished as elderly and frail and in over his head. The phrase “Let’s Go Brandon,” a euphemism for “F— Joe Biden,” became the soundboard for countless gifs and graphics.
The Dark Brandon meme is drawn from that. It grew on Reddit, Twitter, and TikTok over the past few months – sometimes ironically as a way of mocking Trump superfans. But it took the leap into normie-discourse this past weekend as the massive reconciliation package was poised to pass the Senate; Sinister Biden suddenly became the all-powerful president.
“Foolish mortals, you have awoken Dark Brandon,” one TikTok video went to the tune of “Gangsta’s Paradise.”
“No more bourgeois malarkey,” went another. Several users posted “Dark Brandon” explainer videos, too.
The White House leaned in, posting photos of Biden with red laser eyes — a look that has more often been used in the past by right-wing activists and crypto currency evangelists.
“Dark Brandon is crushing it,” deputy press secretary Andrew Bates wrote on Twitter.
The “Dark Brandon” Reddit channel went wild over the White House’s embrace.
The president’s opponents weren’t impressed. In fact, they thought it was all a bit reckless.Republican National Committee spokesperson EMMA VAUGHNcriticized the White House for posting “Chinese propaganda to celebrate the fact they raised taxes during a recession and gave away billions of dollars for electric vehicles that depend on China for parts.”
The meme represented a rare moment of internet virality for a president who White House officials acknowledge doesn’t draw from a Twitter-heavy base of support.
And while the White House often repeats the “Twitter is not real life” mantra, the internet love was welcomed in some Democratic circles after several months of trying to defend an administration with approval numbers in the thirties.
“Being a Joe Biden supporter hasn’t been very fun over the past year, and Dark Brandon is fun!” said one Democratic digital strategist close to the White House. “It’s a sign the vibes are improving — this couldn’t have bubbled up unless there are some actual genuine W’s to point to.”
Even White House staff secretary NEERA TANDEN joined in. Responding to a tweet reading: “Lasers shooting out of Joe Biden’s eyes is an official Statement of Administration Policy,” Tanden wrote“This is an official position.”
She later tweeted: “just kidding,” which is precisely the thing one would write under pressure from Dark Brandon.

WHAT THE WHITE HOUSE DOESN’T WANT YOU TO READ: This piece by WSJ’s CATHERINE LUCEY that contrasts the president’s Delaware visits to how many media interviews he’s granted since he’s started the job: “In his first 18 months in office, [Biden] traveled to Delaware 46 times and to Camp David 18 times. He has played 15 rounds of golf, conducted 17 formal press conferences and gave 20 sit-down interviews, according to former CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knollerwho tracks presidential data.”
Lucey writes the figures “underscore a media strategy that has relied more on prepared remarks and brief question-and-answer sessions with reporters than on formal press conferences and interviews.”

Building upon the growing interest in multi-use monitors, LG has launched the Libero 27BQ70QC, a 27-inch monitor that boasts multiple mounting options. The company has previously released the LG View IPS display as an addon for their LG Gram laptops.
The Libero, which was announced alongside a range of LG UltraGear Gaming monitors that were first shown off at the beginning of the year, has been designed with maximum versatility in mind, able to be used with a stand or hung on two wall brackets for use as a smart TV or office display, making perfect for video calls and conferences thanks to its detachable FHD webcam and built in Waves MaxxAudio Speakers.
A first for the company, LG has fitted the Libero with software that allows it to automatically adjust to any orientation, without the need to change device settings as you would with a regular monitor.
As a display itself, the LG Libero boasts an IPS display with sRGB 99%, a FHD+ (2,560 x 1,440) resolution HDR 10, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and a top brightness of 350 nits, making it quite the business powerhouse. It also features HDMI and USB-C ports, and can charge a device at a max of 65W.
The monitor can be controlled via the LG Switch app, for easy function switching and multitasking, as well as activating split mode.
The mysterious fate of Olivia Newton-John’s on-off lover haunted the singer in her later years after he disappeared without trace – amid lurid claims he faked his own death.
Patrick McDermott, 48, went on an overnight fishing trip with 22 other people on June 30, 2005, but vanished before he returned to dry land without anyone noticing.
For almost two decades afterwards, he was rumored to be in hiding in Mexico, on the run from crushing debts.
But repeated manhunts by police, media and private detectives have never been able to find any conclusive proof, despite constant reports of him being spotted.
‘I don’t think I will ever really be at peace with it,’ Newton-John admitted.
‘I think there will always be a question mark.’
The mysterious fate of Olivia Newton-John’s on-off lover Patrick McDermott haunted the singer in her later years after he disappeared without trace amid claims he faked his own death
She hooked up with McDermott after her 1995 divorce from first husband Matt Lattanzi and began a nine-year on-off romance with the cameraman.
Newton-John was on a promotional tour in Australia when McDermott disappeared and it was another week after the fishing trip until it was noticed he had gone.
Crew on his fishing boat had found the American’s car keys, passport and wallet on board the boat and his car was found parked at the San Pedro marina in Los Angeles.
But still no-one realized he was missing until he failed to appear at a family event on July 6, with police finally called in on July 11.
By then though the trail had gone cold – and investigators turned up nothing.
McDermott had previously been briefly married and fathered a son, and a court had recently ordered him to pay $8,000 in backdated child support.

Patrick McDermott, 48, went on an overnight fishing trip with 22 other people on June 30, 2005, but vanished before the boat ‘Freedom’ returned to dry land without anyone noticing
He had filed for bankruptcy with debts of more than $30,000, prompting speculation he’d faked his death to escape and start anew.
A Coast Guard inquiry admitted they ‘did not find any evidence of criminal action, suicide, accident or hoax in the disappearance of McDermott.’
A three-year probe into the ‘Freedom’ fishing boat found it didn’t carry out any head counts on the day of the trip, causing McDermott’s disappearance to go unnoticed.
Both probes concluded McDermott was likely lost at sea during the night.
But eye witnesses continued to report seeing him around Mexico, where he was said to be living on a yacht off the coast of Sayulita and Acapulco.
TV companies repeatedly sent teams of undercover film crews and private detectives to hunt for him and set up sophisticated online website traps to trace him.
For almost two decades afterwards, he was rumored to be in hiding in Mexico, on the run from crushing debts and said to be living on a yacht off the Mexican coast at Sayulita
Eye witnesses reported seeing Patrick McDermott around Mexico, including around Acapulco
One investigator John Nazarian insisted in 2016: ‘It’s rumored he was with a German national. I spoke to people there.
‘The girl he was traveling with was described as having a German accent.
‘To come up with the conclusion that he fell off the boat, and allegedly no-one saw him fall off the boat, is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard in my life.’
All the manhunts proved fruitless though and McDermott remained elusive.
Photographs of a man and a woman said to be McDermott and his new lover in Mexico were published in 2017 by New Idea magazine.
But the claims were undone weeks later when a Canadian couple came forward to say they were the people in the photograph.

Olivia Newton-John put the tragedy behind her to get on with life, meeting future husband John Easterling and marrying him at an Inca ritual in Peru in 2008.
But the mystery continued to stalk her in the years that followed, although she had resigned herself to the fact McDermott was most probably dead.
‘He was lost at sea, and nobody really knows what happened,’ Newton-John told 60 Minutes in 2016.
‘It’s human to wonder. Because whenever you go through difficult times, there’s always those concerns.
‘Those are the things in life you have to accept and let go. Of course questions always come up and that’s human.
‘But you know, I live on.’
WHAT HAPPENED TO OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN’S LOST LOVER?
Theories have raged for almost two decades about the fate of Olivia Newton-John’s on-off lover, movie cameraman Patrick McDermott, 48.
He vanished on an overnight 22-hour fishing trip on the boat ‘Freedom’ out of San Pedro marina in Los Angeles on June 30, 2005.
The boat’s crew found his car keys, wallet and passport on board after all the other passengers disembarked the following day, and his car was found parked nearby.
The crew hadn’t done a headcount so no-one noticed he was missing for another week when he failed to turn up for a family event, with police alerted almost a week later..
Since then speculation has raged about what happened to him, with investigators unable to find any evidence of a crime, suicide, hoax or an accident on the fishing trip.
Officials believe he simply fell overboard and drowned, but conspiracy theorists insist he may have had another boat lined up to meet him offshore.
Others believe he may have planted his belongings on the boat before slipping off, possibly before it even left port, without any noticing.
Private detectives set up a website FindPatrickMcDermott.com to try to trap the missing American into giving himself away, identifying the location of everyone who accessed the site.
Olivia Newton-John kept in touch with McDermott’s ex-wife Yvette Nipar (pictured) on the fate of the missing American movie cameraman
A flurry of web traffic from the Sayulita area of Mexico’s West Coast sparked a hunt for him there without any success.
Others say they spotted him living on a yacht off the coast of Acapulco, 1000km further south.
One investigator claimed to have found him and spoken with him in 2009, claiming he just wanted to be left alone but the claim was unsubstantiated.
Another claimed to have categorical proof he was alive and was on the verge of revealing it – but never did.
Over the years there have been at least 20 sightings of him in Mexico and Central America, but many have proven false.
One set of pictures of a couple alleged to be the distinctive looking McDermott – who was half-Korean and adopted at the age of two – turned out to be a Canadian couple.
His ex-wife Yvette Nipar, the mother of their son Chance, begged for the speculation to end for the sake of their child.
She pleaded with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to block the publication of a book by private eye Philip Klein about her ex’s disappearance.
‘My son has been through enough emotional torment over this,’ Nipar wrote, branding Klein a ‘serial liar’.
‘He has yet to be able to move on.due to Mr Klein’s continual effort to keep him in the public eye.
However, you want to describe it, Aussie Kelsey-Lee Barber simply has that champion quality that all the great legends are made of.
Fresh from her record-breaking world championships victory last month, Barber pulled off a famous win in the javelin at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday night (AEST), taking the lead with her final throw.
Barber was pushed to her limits by Aussie Mackenzie Little, who had led all the way until the second-final throw of the event.
Barber won the gold by just 16cm with a monster final throw of 64.43m.
Little threw two personal bests in the competition and it still wasn’t enough as Barber produced a monster effort right at the death.
It was a super-human comeback after she tested positive to Covid last week and was isolated from the rest of the Aussie team.
Athletics commentator David Culbert said in commentary on Channel 7: “That is extraordinary, take a bow. That’s unbelievable.”
Barber, who won bronze at the Glasgow Games in 2014 and silver at the Gold Coast Games in 2018, was also stunned when interviewed after the final throws.
“I am in shock still. I went over to the fence and I said… my brain is a bit fuzzy,” she said.
“I don’t know what just happened. But you are right it is a beautiful story to share over my Commonwealth Games journey and I am happy to come away with a gold.”
Barber had thrown 66.91 in the final at the world championships in Oregon.
An apparel company known for inflammatory apparel championing the Second Amendment and Donald Trump has been fined after the Federal Trade Commission found the company falsely claimed its imported apparel is made in the US
Utah-based Lions Not Sheep and its owner, SeanWhalen, were slapped with a $211,335 fine last week after the FTC found the company removed “Made in China” tags, replacing them with fake “Made in the USA” labels, according to an FTC news release.
The fine comes on the heels of a complaint filed by the FTC in May.
According to the FTC, the company added phony “Made in USA” labels to clothing imported from China and other countries. The FTC release did not identify the other countries.
The apparel company sells items including T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets on its website as well as through Amazon and Etsy.
Products, according to the FTC, are marketed heavily through social media channels, claiming that it would “show people it’s possible to live your life as a LION, Not a sheep.”
Some shirts on its website read “give violence a chance,” depict former President Trump as the Terminator and feature military-style firearms.
“You have two choices, to be lead or to be led,” the company’s website read on Monday.
Whalen said in a statement to USA TODAY the company does not agree with the FTC’s ruling, but has “no choice but to accept it and move on.” The statement said the company has been “very honest and transparent” about its business, citing an October 2020 Facebook video posted by Whalen in which he says the company buys shirts that were made in China.
In addition to the fine, under a 12-page order from the FTC, the company and its owner must “stop making bogus made in the USA” claims and “come clean about foreign production.”

Also under the order, any qualified Made in USA claims must include “a clear and conspicuous disclosure” about the extent to which the product contains foreign parts, ingredients or components, or processing.
It goes on to read that if a product is assembled in the US, the company must ensure it is last substantially transformed in the US, its principal assembly occurs in the United States, and that its US assembly operations are substantial.

Last month, Montblanc announced its latest Wear OS smartwatch, the Summit 3. The $1,290 smartwatches produced by the luxury brand offered premium materials, along with the promise of Google’s Wear OS 3. While they delivered on their promises, it looks like some things are missing, most importantly Google Assistant.
According to Michael Fisher, better known as MrMobile in the YouTube space, Google’s digital assistant was nowhere to be found, along with the feed section that offered suggested content at a glance. While it might be surprising to see things missing on a nearly $1300 watch, Google’s support page does state that “Google Assistant is available on select watches that run Wear OS 2 and 3.”
Furthermore, the support page says that “some features and devices aren’t available in all languages or countries.” This last part is even referenced on Montblanc’s own product page for Summit 3. Although this isn’t typically expected when spending so much on a device, Google hasn’t exactly been the best at bringing updates and features to its Wear OS line. When asked for comment, Google delivered a canned response.
So if the price tag and missing features of Wear OS 3 aren’t enough to determine you, the Summit 3 is an elegant watch with a casing made from titanium that is lightweight and durable. The watch will come with an assortment of custom watch faces, along with a choice of three different colored straps. Luckily there are more affordable Wear OS 3 devices just around the corner.
On the horizon, we have Google’s own Pixel Watch, which is expected to arrive in the coming months, and a trio of Samsung Galaxy watches that will reportedly arrive this week. There could also be a premium Galaxy watch model that will arrive with the “Pro” moniker. If curious about the Montblanc Summit 3, you can check out the full MrMobile video below.

The baby calf and mother Bibi are healthy, and the zoo says they are “inseparable.”
Cincinnati Zoo
Fiona the Hippo now has a little brother.
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden welcomed the healthy calf into the world on Aug. 3.
The 23-year-old mother Bibi carried the boy, who weighs at least roughly 60 pounds.
“We’re just happy that the calf is healthy. The sex didn’t matter much to the hippo team, but it will be interesting to observe and compare the behavioral differences between a hand-raised girl and a mom-raised boy,” Christina Gorsuch, the zoo’s director of animal care, said in statement Monday.
The zoo has not named the calf yet and is currently accepting suggestions through an online form. The name will be announced later this week.
After Fiona was born six weeks premature in 2017 and weighed just 29 pounds, zookeepers questioned whether she would survive.
This calf looks huge to us because Fiona, Bibi’s first baby, only weighed 29 pounds when she was born six weeks premature and wasn’t able to stand on her own. This new calf weighs at least twice as much as Fiona did and is already walking and spending time with mom in the pool! pic.twitter.com/9ZBPBiBimB
Following extensive care and attention — including an IV the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center helped put in her from dehydration — Fiona defied the odds.
Fiona drew fans from all over the world who supported her each step of the way. Millions have tuned into Fiona’s own show from her on Facebook.
She became the zoo’s star animal and helped get more positive responses following the death of Harambe in 2016. The 17-year-old western lowland gorilla was shot and killed after a child fell into the enclosure.
