Car sought in four Muslim killings in New Mexico

Comment

The main mosque in Albuquerque has urged its members to avoid walking alone at night and make sure no one is following them home. Some Muslims in the city are closing their businesses early. Others say they won’t go out after dark.

In the past two weeks, three Muslim men have been shot and killed in Albuquerque in what authorities think were targeted attacks. The police have appealed to the public for help finding a vehicle linked to the crimes but have made no arrests, leaving the Muslim community feeling panicked and helpless.

Authorities suspect the three recent killings may be connected to an earlier unsolved homicide in November 2021. The victims in all four incidents were men of South Asian descent.

The police have not determined a motive for the killings. At least three of the shootings followed a pattern in which the victims were ambushed and killed, said Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for the Albuquerque police.

Police on Sunday released a photo of the car that they believe was “used as a conveyance” in the four shootings and asked the public for assistance, saying the vehicle had tinted windows and appeared to be a Jetta.

The FBI’s Albuquerque office is assisting the city’s police in the investigation, said Frank Fisher, a spokesman for the office. The New Mexico State Police and the local sheriff’s office are also lending resources.

There are about 5,000 Muslims in Albuquerque, many of them immigrants, representing a tiny fraction of the city’s overall population of 560,000.

Now they are united by a feeling of disquiet.

“People are just fearful, and rightfully so, because you don’t know where the next attack” is going to take place, said Ahmad Assed, the president of the Islamic Center of New Mexico, a mosque attended by all four of the victims .

The most recent victim, Naeem Hussain, was killed on Aug. 5. His body was discovered in the parking lot of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains, a nonprofit that provides adoption and refugee services.

Hussain was a truck driver in his 20s who had immigrated to the United States from Pakistan and took the oath of citizenship on July 8, said Ehsan Shahalami, his brother-in-law.

Just hours before he was killed, Hussain had attended the funerals of two of the earlier victims, Aftab Hussein, 41, and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, at the Islamic Center of New Mexico. The three men share a common surname but are not related. all regularly attended prayers at the center, said Tahir Gauba, his director of public affairs.

Gauba said the string of killings has been “horrific” for Albuquerque’s Muslim community.

“I’ve been in the United States since ’95,” he said. “I’ve been through 9/11. I’ve been through the Trump era. I’ve never felt this helpless and in fear.”

Last year’s killing of Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, outside his family-owned business was initially viewed as an isolated crime. That changed after the shootings of Aftab Hussein on July 26 and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain on Aug. 1.

Assed, the Islamic Center’s president, said police told him that the second and third killings were linked and the perpetrator was possibly targeting Muslims. The collective reaction was, “Oh my god, what are we dealing with here?” I have recalled.

Since the fourth killing on Friday, the city’s Muslim community has been in a state of panic.

Ahmed Hasan, president of Salam Academy, a local school affiliated with the Muslim community, said that he had received a flood of calls from parents asking about the security of their children, whose classes start on Wednesday.

The school has reactivated an access code system that it had stopped using during the pandemic and there is now a police presence on campus, Hasan said. Meanwhile, he and his family have stopped leaving home in the evening and have urged their relatives to do the same. “It’s a stressful time,” said Hasan.

The families of the victims are in shock. Naeem Hussain left behind a wife, parents and siblings, said Shahalami, his brother-in-law of him. Hussain loved fishing and always carried a rod in his truck, taking time between deliveries to seek out rivers and lakes. He had planned to bring his wife over from Pakistan and they hoped to buy a house together.

Hussain was a “genuine, pure-hearted” individual who was “in love with America,” Shahalami said.

Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, who was fatally shot Aug. 1, worked on the campaign team of Rep. Melanie Ann Stansbury (DN.M.), the congresswoman said during a news conference Sunday.

She described him as “a kind, funny, brilliant, amazing young man from Pakistan who came to the United States to pursue his career and his life’s dream and to study at the University of New Mexico.”

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) pledged Sunday that the perpetrator would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but that authorities needed community support to identify the vehicle of interest.

“We will bring this person or to justice,” she said at a news conference. “We will provide justice to the families who have lost everything.”

President Biden said Sunday that he was “angered and saddened by the horrific killings” in Albuquerque.

“While we await a full investigation, my prayers are with the victims’ families, and my Administration stands strongly with the Muslim community,” he said. on Twitter. “These hateful attacks have no place in America.”

“The lives of Albuquerque Muslims are in danger,” said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the deputy director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “Whoever is responsible for this horrific, hateful shooting spree must be identified and stopped — now.”

CAIR, which advocates for the civil rights of Muslims in the United States, said in a statement Saturday that it was offering $10,000 for information “leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.” The organization called on the Biden administration to “take a direct role” in the matter.

Norseman solar project sees towns switch from diesel to part solar in battery rollout

With already high petroleum prices expected to rise even further this year, solar projects that will shift dependency away from diesel are underway in several West Australian regional towns.

Energy provider Horizon Power has announced it would build a centralized solar farm and battery in Norseman, about 720km east of Perth.

The 758 kilowatt solar farm would consist of 1,400 panels and would house a 336 kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system.

On completion, the project would see just over 24 per cent of the town’s energy sourced from renewable energy.

Currently, the township relies entirely on a diesel-generated power station for its electricity.

Dundas Shire President Laurene Bonza said a development application had been lodged with the council.

“It looks like solar and renewables are going to be the way of the future and we get a little bit of a jump on that,” she said.

“Hopefully, it will mean our power is reliable and we are doing our bit.”

If approved, construction was expected to get underground early next year.

The diesel power plant would then be used to ensure supply.

Demand for energy was expected to increase with a gold mill currently under construction in the area.

“The mine has already extended the old power station and added in a couple more diesel generators to make sure we so don’t end up in the dark,” Ms Bonza said.

“Este [solar farm and battery] should make sure we never end up in the dark.”

There was an extra incentive to switch to renewables when the federal government’s temporary cut to the fuel excise tax was removed at the end of September.

regional roll-out

The Norseman solar project was part of a broader roll out in which Horizon Power planned to install centralized solar and battery storages systems in the mid-west towns of Cue, Sandstone, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet, Wiluna and Yalgoo.

Actor Ezra Miller, star of The Flash, Fantastic Beasts, Justice League, charged with felony burglary in Vermont

Actor Ezra Miller has been charged with felony burglary in the latest in a string of incidents involving the embattled star of The Flash.

Vermont State Police said they responded to a burglary complaint in Stamford on May 1, discovering several bottles of alcohol were taken from a home while the owners weren’t there.

Miller was charged after police looked at surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses.

The police report said the 29-year-old actor was located shortly before midnight and ordered to appear in Vermont Superior Court on September 26.

The felony charge added to Miller’s mounting legal woes and reports of erratic behaviour.

They were arrested twice earlier this year in Hawaii, including for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar.

The second incident was for a second-degree assault.

The parents of 18-year-old Tokata Iron Eyes, a Native American activist, also filed a protection order against Miller earlier this year.

The teen’s parents accused the actor of grooming their child and other inappropriate behavior with her as a minor from the age of 12.

Tokata Iron Eyes recently told Insider that those allegations were false.

Miller’s lawyers didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on the Vermont felony charge or the protection order related to Tokata Iron Eyes.

After appearing in several films for Warner Bros and DC Films as the Flash, Miller stars in the upcoming standalone film The Flash, due out in June 2023.

Though Warner Bros last week axed the nearly completed Batgirl film, the studio has suggested it remains committed to releasing The Flash.

In an earnings report last week, David Zaslav, chief executive of Warner Bros Discovery, referenced The Flash.

“We have seen The Flash, Black Adam and Shazam 2. We are very excited about them,” said Mr Zaslav.

“We think they are terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”

Representatives for Warner Bros didn’t respond to requests for comment.

US PGA Tour files motion in court to prevent players from playing FedEx Cup, Matt Jones, latest, updates

The US PGA Tour filed a motion in federal court on Monday asking three LIV Golf players not to be allowed to compete in this week’s FedEx Cup playoff opener, while delivering a blistering attack on the morality of the tournament.

Arguing LIV Golf players knew there would be consequences for leaving the PGA for the Saudi-backed upstart series, the PGA said in US District Court for Northern California that they can not “have their cake and eat it too.”

Australian Matt Jones and Americans Talor Gooch and Hudson Swafford will have a hearing on Tuesday afternoon in San Jose on their request for a temporary restraining order forcing them to be allowed to compete at this week’s St. Jude Championship at Memphis.

The PGA Tour called the players’ motion “legally baseless” in its filing and added their decision to wait two months after leaving to file the motion was “fabricating an ’emergency’ they now maintain requires immediate action.”

The PGA said players knew their actions would bring suspensions and noted other LIV players who could have playoff spots based on top 125 point finishers in the PGA season have opted not to ask for such spots.

“The players’ purported harm is entirely self-induced,” the PGA filing said. The three players were among 11 who filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the PGA Tour last week, the first legal blow in a fight over the future of elite-level golf that could take years to settle.

The court also heard that LIV Golf was “prepared to lose billions of dollars” for the sport by sportswashing for “deplorable” Saudi Arabia – the financial backers of the tournament.

“Liv is not a rational economic actor, competing fairly to start a golf tour,” the court heard.

“It’s prepared to lose billions of dollars to leverage plaintiffs and the sport of golf to ‘sportswash’ the Saudi government’s deplorable reputation for human rights abuses.”

LIV Golf offered record $25 million purses and lured away several of the sport’s top names from the US PGA Tour, prompting the PGA to make major prize money boosts for many events next season.

Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Louis Oosthuizen and Martin Kaymer are among those who have cast their lot with LIV Golf.

The next LIV Golf event will not be contested until after the PGA playoffs, with this week’s top 70 in points advancing to next week’s BMW Championship and the top 30 making it to the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Gooch was 20th in FedEx Cup points with Jones 65th and Swafford 67th but they have been suspended since teeing off in their first LIV Golf event.

There are currently only 122 players in the field at Memphis as three of those who made the lineup have dropped out.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood cited personal reasons while American Daniel Berger has not played since the US Open due to a back injury and American Lanto Griffin said in July he was likely done for the season after back surgery.

Queensland police charge four people linked to Brisbane gym franchise with money laundering

Queensland police have charged four people as part of a lengthy money laundering investigation in which more than $1.5 million was allegedly transferred to an offshore location.

The charges come after police intercepted a plane at Redcliffe Airport in 2020 and seized cocaine, large quantities of cannabis and $9 million in cash and weapons.

The incident led to Operation Romeo Mugwort and further evidence of the alleged laundering.

Police identified people linked to a gym franchise operating in Brisbane allegedly transferring structured monetary deposits via a money remittance service to an overseas location.

Andrei Skoch: Judge authorizes warrant for US to seize Russian oligarch’s $90 million plane

CNN

US authorities have obtained a warrant to seize a Russian oligarch’s private plane, valued at over $90 million, for violating US sanctions for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Airbus A319-100 aircraft, authorities say, is owned by Andrei Skoch, a member of Russia’s State Duma and a billionaire who made his fortune through a stake in a conglomerate in the metals and mining industry. Skoch has been on the US sanctions list since 2018 for Russia’s invasion of Crimea, the eastern region of Ukraine. The plane is believed to be in Kazakhstan, authorities said.

Skoch is the latest Russian oligarch to have one of his luxury assets in the sights of US authorities, who launched a campaign to seize valuable property of those close to the Kremlin in hope of pressing an end to the war.

In June, US authorities announced a judge approved a warrant for the seizure of two of Roman Abramovich’s private plans, valued at more than $400 million. In May, the US took possession of a $300 million super yacht called the Amadea, which is owned by Suleiman Kerimov. And in April, authorities seized at a port in Spain the $90 million yacht Tango belonging to Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Monday, a federal judge authorized a seizure warrant from a special agent with the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security, which traced the plane to Skoch through a series of shell companies allegedly intended to shield his ownership.

Authorities allege Skoch violated US sanctions by using US dollars to pay the plane’s registration fees to Aruban authorities and pay insurance premiums on the Airbus that passed through US financial institutions. The $113,180 in registration payments and $284,459 in insurance premiums passed through the US banking system without a license to allow payment on sanctioned entities.

The seizure warrant notes that, in addition to the plane, Skoch owns a yacht named the Madame Gu, a helicopter, and a villa at the Four Seasons Hotel in the Seychelles. Those assets are not authorized for seizure. Authorities need to demonstrate that sanctions were violated, such as by money transferring through the US banking system, to seize property.

Prosecutors have creatively used insurance premiums and registration payments to identify assets for seizure since most yachts and plans can’t operate unless they are insured. Since the US, UK and the European Union announced broad sanctions against Russian elites, several insurance companies stopped doing business with sanctioned individuals.

Kyneton residents consider court action to fight development of McDonald’s, Bunnings complex

Macedon Ranges residents are considering Supreme Court action following a state planning tribunal decision to overturn a council vote to halt a two-part commercial development.

A Kyneton development for a McDonald’s fast-food restaurant, another restaurant, Bunnings and a 24-hour service station was approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) last week after the applicant decided to challenge the council’s decision and the conditions imposed.

Susan McNab is one of the leaders of the fight against the development and said residents were disappointed by the court’s actions.

She said the group would look at viable options to counter the decision, but accepted that a loss in the Supreme Court would be costly.

“Naturally, we don’t feel the decision is to the benefit of Kyneton. That part of the town is the main access to nearby reserves and people often go out that way climbing and for classic car rallies and cycling,” she said.

“It’s difficult for many residents to not be considered at VCAT.

“It’s been about the economics of the matter. The council said that area would be developed at some point, but this particular style of development works against Kyneton’s character.”

Big brands coming down the highway

The decision almost confirms the introduction of commercial development in Kyneton, which one community group has labeled the ‘tide of overdevelopment’. Residents fear the big brands will take away the small country charm that the town is known for, with small businesses and well-known eateries losing out.

“The proposal will not detract from the rural character of the Shire. The proposal will reinforce the rural character of the Shire by its location [in a commercial zone] within the protected settlement boundary; [and the] containment of its impacts within the subject land,” VCAT’s decision said.

The decision by VCAT has caused a stir on social media after attracting hundreds of submissions airing concerns about traffic and safety, and the effect the development could have on the nearby environment and local economy.

Kate Langbroek explains X-rated Have You Been Paying Attention moment

Kate Langbroek has opened up about a “mortifying” X-rated joke she made as a panellist on Monday’s episode of Have You Been Paying Attention – after forgetting her own teenage son was in the studio audience.

A slightly sheepish Langbroek hopped on a call with Kyle and Jackie O on Tuesday morning to explain the moment, which was edited before it aired on Channel 10 due to its explicit nature.

After fellow panelist Sam Pang complained about the torrent of innuendo about a food prop – a phallic-shaped tube of liverwurst – Langbroek exclaimed, “What innuendo?” and she mimed performing oral sex on the prop, even pushing her own head down onto it as host Tom Gleisner buried her head in her hands.

Langbroek soon had the same reaction when Pang reminded her that her son Lewis was in the studio audience.

Lewis, 18, a year 12 student, was shown on camera giving a nervous laugh as he watched his mum’s antics.

Speaking to Kyle and Jackie O this morning, Kate groaned as she explained how she’d gotten carried away in the moment.

“First of all, it wasn’t live – they edit (the show) for time. But because there was a (studio) audience in there, and there hasn’t been since pre-Covid, you get a bit giddy. The boys yell out swear words and you know it’ll be cut out. I thought that was going to happen!” she said.

“I was giddy as a girl, I was having fun, I was with my friends… Oh. My. Goodness. When Pang said, ‘You know your son’s in the audience,’ it was like the world closed in on me. I was so mortified. He was in the front row!”

Langbroek said Lewis had been “a good sport” about it, but when Kyle and Jackie O got him on the line he couldn’t resist publicly raking his mum over the coals.

He told the hosts the moment had been “pretty mortifying, to be honest.”

“Externally I was laughing, but internally… the pain that I feel cannot be overstated,” he joked.

Kyle tried to throw Langbroek even further under the bus by asking if Lewis had seen his mum’s early acting work on the racy ’90s soap Chances (Langbroek famously appeared topless in one episode).

As his mother begged him to hang up, Lewis told the hosts: “I don’t think I want to explore down that path.”

“But some of your mates might, darling,” Kate quipped.

Langbroek had previously told Kyle and Jackie O she and her eldest son shared a special relationship – one forged in part by Lewis’ childhood cancer battle.

Speaking on the KIIS Network’s 3pm Pick Up back in June, she gave listeners an emotional update about her son’s health.

Lewis was diagnosed with leukemia when he was six and endured four years of “terrible” treatment, she said.

His latest annual check-up marked an important milestone, as it was the last time the now-18-year-old would need to visit Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital to monitor his health.

“They told us: ‘This is the last time we’ll be seeing you at this hospital because Lewis is transitioning to an adult hospital.’ I thought ‘oh my goodness, there were so many times where we thought this day may not come’,” Langbroek said.
