Yaser Said found guilty in 2008 murder of his teenage daughters

Prior to his 2020 arrest, Said had been on the run from law enforcement for 12 years, even making the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list.

DALLAS — Yaser Said, once listed as one of the most wanted men in America, has been found guilty of killing his two teenage daughters.

Said’s daughters Sarah, 17, and Amina Said, 18, were found dead in 2008, slumped in Said’s borrowed taxi as it was parked in front of the Omni Hotel in Irving. The girls died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Their deaths have been described as so-called “honor killings” — because they believed Said was upset that his daughters had been dating outside the Muslim faith. In her final moments, Said’s younger daughter Sarah managed to call 911 and identify her father as the shooter.

In the wake of his daughters’ death, Said hid from authorities as they sought to arrest him. He evaded law enforcement for 12 years, and eventually ended up on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. He was later found at a home in Justin, Texas, just 30 miles from where Sarah and Amina were killed.

Upon detaining Said in 2020, the FBI also arrested his son and brother on charges of harboring a fugitive. Each of those men has since been convicted and sentenced to more than a decade in prison.

Yaser, by all accounts and even his own, was the last person known to have seen the girls alive that day.

“All signs always pointed to Yaser Said. Period,” prosecutor Lauren Black told jurors during closing arguments. “And we have an eye witness to the crime. Sarah said tells you who her killer is.

Black replayed Sarah’s 911 for jurors, where she says her dad shot her. Their mother, Patricia, became visibly emotional.

“She’s screaming out from the grave,” Black said. “He’s here. He did it.”

Black reminded jurors about the email Amina wrote on Dec. 21, just days her death. Amina told her teacher that she and her sister were running away because they feared their father.

“He has simply made our lives a nightmare,” the email said. “…I know that he will search til he finds us and he without any drama or any doubt kill us.”

At the end of six days in the capital murder trial, jurors deliberated for about three hours before returning their guilty verdict Tuesday afternoon.

Over the course of the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of Said as a jealous and angry man who controlled his daughters’ lives. They detailed the brutal nature with which his daughters were murdered, and they described it in graphic detail.

Said’s attorneys, meanwhile, only called one witness to testify: Said himself.

Throughout his testimony, Said — aided by a translator — denied that he killed his daughters, saying that he loved them, claiming that he feared for his own safety the night they were killed. He said they were alive and well when they left them in the taxi.

He said he was the victim of a media smear campaign that was all too eager to paint him as a killer.

“He is asking you to suspend all common sense, all reality to believe that story,” prosecutor Brandi Mitchell told jurors. “It was so absurd. It is insulting to the memory of Amina and Sarah Said.”

Mitchell told jurors that Said couldn’t explain why someone would want to hurt him. She said it did n’t make sense that he would leave his two girls in the cab with his phone and his gun from him.

“Does that seem reasonable?” Mitchell said.

Throughout the trial and in closing arguments, Said’s attorneys attacked the investigation itself. They questioned, among other things, why the police didn’t take fingerprints from the car, why gunshot residue wasn’t taken from the girl’s boyfriends and why written statements weren’t taken from the boyfriends.

Said’s attorneys have implied that Sarah could have been suffering from a rare condition that causes auditory and visual hallucinations when she made that 911 call pointing the finger at her father.

“This is insulting to the memory of Amina and Sarah,” defense attorney Joe Patton said. “The police insulted their memory.”

Defense attorney Bahranan Muse told jurors that prosecutors and investigators had based their case “on prejudice and ignorance.” Yaser, she said, was a conservative father who sought to protect his daughters from him and was not an abuser.

“Discipline does not mean you murdered your children,” Muse said. “Your culture does not mean you murdered your children.”

After the verdict, Said’s former wife, Patricia Owens, took the stand to give a victim’s act statement.

She told him because of his actions Amina and Sarah never went to prom, graduated from high school or became doctors as they had dreamed of doing.

“They were very smart intelligent and bright and did not have an enemy in the world, their father, the devil, that killed them,” she said, holding up pictures of the girls as she spoke to him.

She told Said that not only had he killed his daughters, he had “brainwashed” their son who is now in prison for helping to hide him.

Said became visibly angry as she spoke. The judge admonished his attorneys to keep their clients quit.

“You can keep those evil eyes on me as long as you want, but you will never break me down again nor will you ever be able to hurt another person,” Owens told him.

She told him she hopes he suffers just the way their daughters did.

“At this time, you are nothing. You are a prisoner. You are a murderer and the devil,” she said.

Said’s former sister-in-law, Connie Moggio, who had spoken to Amina on the day she died, also addressed Said.

“There is no honor in killing two unarmed people. I call that being a coward,” she said. “The only thing you did to your family was stain it with your family’s blood. Now it is your turn to get what you gave, a prison you call home.”

Prosecutors did not seek out the death penalty in this capital murder case; with this conviction, Said is automatically sentenced to life in prison without parole.

It’s the end of an era for the FIFA franchise. FIFA 23 will be the last game in the series to carry the FIFA moniker, as the world football governing body of the same name and video developer Electronic Arts (EA) will be parting ways following its release.

That also means that FIFA 23 will be the final game in the series to feature the World Cup, at least for the foreseeable future. But it seems it will make the most of this opportunity with not 1 but 2 World Cup modes. Both the men’s and women’s version of the event will be featured.

It sounds like one of the most essential games in the franchise’s history. Here’s where you can secure FIFA 23 in all available formats ahead of its 30 September release.

Tennis news 2022: Naomi Osaka retires from Toronto opener with back pain

Four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka retired from her opening match at the WTA Toronto Masters with lower back pain on Wednesday AEST, raising injury concerns with the US Open looming.

Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi advanced when Osaka retired trailing 7-6, 3-0.

Kanepi, a runner-up last week in Washington, needed 71 minutes on court as she broke three times before the Japanese star called it quits.

Defeat drove the emotional Osaka to tears.

“I felt my back from the start of the match and despite trying to push through it, I just wasn’t able to today,” Osaka said.

“I’d like to pay credit to Kaia for playing well and want to wish her all the best for the rest of the tournament.”

Osaka has played only six matches with a 2-4 record since losing the Miami final in early April to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

Kanepi, 37, won their only prior meeting five years ago in three sets at the US Open.

“I tried to play my game and stay aggressive. It was a very tight match,” Kanepi said.

“I felt I needed a little more time to get used to new things, but after that I felt comfortable.”

Meanwhile, reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu of Britain exited in the first round, losing 7-6, 6-2 to Italy’s Camila Giorgi.

Despite the setback in the city of her birth 19 years ago, Raducanu kept her spirits up as her US Open title defense draws nearer.

“It was a really good match, to be honest,” Raducanu said.

“The level was pretty high, especially in the first set.

“Camila’s a great opponent. She won this tournament last year. I just need to get better at dealing with players who play probably as quick as she does.”

Defending WTA Canadian champion Giorgi won a combative first set and ran away with the second against the 19-year-old Englishwoman, whose title defense in New York begins in less than three weeks.

The feisty Italian trailed by a break in both sets but showed her spirit by winning the last six games of the contest.

Giorgi needed just over an hour and three-quarters to advance to the second round over the ninth seed who broke into the top 10 ranking less than a month ago.

Raducanu had to hold on in a wild opening set, where serve was broken in six of the dozen games played.

The Briton saved a set point in the 12th game to bring on a tie-breaker, but collapsed to lose seven straight points as Giorgi took the set after 71 minutes.

Raducanu was broken three times in the second set as Giorgi finished off her victory.

Shorter hospital stays solution to elective surgery backlog, new analysis finds

Paul Murgatroyd, 46, chose the short-stay option – only staying in hospital one night – following his right hip replacement in June.

The prospect of recovering in his own home at Allambie Heights, with his wife’s home cooking, three children and pet labrador was considerably more appealing than the bed, food and ambience a hospital would provide.

“It sounds a bit daunting at first that you’ll be coming home after a day in hospital,” Murgatroyd said. “But having done it, it makes a lot of sense.”

“I went home on crutches and had great support from the hospital… I could call at any time. A nurse visited to check up on me and a physiotherapist has come over once a week for six weeks,” he said.

Murgatroyd is planning to use the short-stay option again following his left hip replacement surgery next week.

Wilson said the short-stay model was not for everyone.

loading

He said patients with complex health needs and comorbidities will need longer hospital stays, “but when it is safe to do so, it’s highly regarded, effective and well-liked”.

“Another key driver was removing out-of-pocket costs,” Wilson said.

Hip or knee replacement patients pay on average $1,200 out of pocket, and are expected to pay $1,400 by 2030. Assuming 10 per cent of eligible patients opted for the short-stay program in 2023, they would save $10 million in out-of-pocket costs collectively or $34 million in 2030, the report projected.

The KPMG analysis found there was no significant difference in the probability of having a medical complication between the 284 patients in the short-stay program and patients receiving conventional care in hospital, echoing international studies.

Health and Aged Care program director at the Grattan Institute, Dr Stephen Duckett, said other insurers should follow suit.

loading

“The issue for the insurance industry is that consumers are juggling mortgages that are going up, who also want to buy lettuce and health insurance. Insurers want to keep insurance costs down and private hospitals want to maximize revenue,” Duckett said.

“A private hospital can increase revenue by offering rehabilitation, which might be two hours a day of physiotherapy… but the hospital is getting payment for the days you’re in a bed, plus the meals, the nurses, all those other elements.

“No wonder it’s more cost-effective to have those couple hours of physio at home,” Duckett said.

Federal judge denies LIV golfers bid for PGA Tour postseason

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge in California ruled Tuesday that three golfers who joined Saudi-backed LIV Golf will not be able to compete in the PGA Tour’s postseason.

US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman made her decision in San Jose after attorneys for the sides each spoke for about an hour. Freeman said she didn’t consider the golfers faced irreparable harm because of the big money they were guaranteed by joining LIV, a key issue in the case.

“There simply is no irreparable harm in this case,” PGA Tour attorney Elliot Peters said.

The three suspended golfers were seeking a temporary restraining order, which Freeman denied. Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford claimed they should be able to play where they want to, each saying in letters last month to the PGA Tour, “I am a free agent and independent contractor.” They are among 10 players who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour last week — including Phil Mickelson.

Robert Walters, an antitrust litigator representing the golfers, noted this would be their opportunity on a big playoff stage, “effectively the Super Bowl of golf” because of its “significant income opportunities.” Freeman responded that the LIV Tour earnings potential was also great and asked whether players might have been able to wait until the conclusion of the PGA Tour season to depart for the new tour.

Walters argued there were only 48 spots and they would have filled up according to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, to which Freeman said she agreed with that stance but that the golfers stood to gain far more financially joining LIV than the money they might have earned on the PGA Tour.

“This is an extraordinarily attractive financial opportunity but it’s much more than that,” Walters said, saying the harm done is that “players lose intangible benefits” such as qualifications for the major tournaments as well as other marquee invitationals.

“This is the holy grail because everybody wants to compete in and prevail in major championships, but it’s not just the majors,” Walters said. I have noted that the PGA Tour inferred these golfers would put a “taint” or “stench” on the tour’s image by playing, perhaps even wearing LIV Tour gear in PGA Tour tournaments.

“We’re disappointed that Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones won’t be allowed to play golf. No one gains by banning golfers from playing,” LIV Golf said in a statement.

The first of three FedEx Cup playoff events begin Thursday. Two tournaments offer $15 million prize funds, and the player who wins the FedEx Cup at East Lake in Atlanta gets $18 million — thus the urgency for Freeman to rule. This case could go to trial next year, with the possibility of an injunction hearing in late September or early October, according to Peters.

Peters said lifting the suspensions of the golfers and allowing them to play would “change the status quo” for the PGA Tour and “give them a fabulous platform” to promote the LIV tour while competing in a PGA event.

“I think it’s a huge problem,” he said. “… The Commissioner needs the ability to protect the Tour. This is a very dire situation for the Tour.”

Gooch (No. 20), Jones (No. 65) and Swafford (No. 67) are among nine players who have joined LIV Golf and finished the regular season among the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings. The other six who joined LIV Golf are not asking to play in the tour’s postseason.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan issued a memo to members that included: “With today’s news, our players, fans and partners can now focus on what really matters over the next three weeks: the best players in the world competing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, capping off an incredibly compelling season with the crowning of the FedEx Cup champion at the Tour Championship.”

Melbourne Brewery Moon Dog Has Made A Saints Row Pale Ale And A Melbourne Launch Event Is Happening

Melbourne brewery Moon Dog has announced that it has partnered with PLAION to release a Saints Row Juicy Pale Ale called “Keep It Strange, Santo”.

This is a limited edition Pale Ale that features the art of Saints Row and will be sold for $9 a pop at Moon Dog venues such as Moon Dog World, Moon Dog as well as online right HERE.

If that wasn’t enough for you, it’s also been announced that Moon Dog will be playing host to the official launch event in Melbourne on August 18th at Moon Dog World in Preston. There will be hands-on with Saints Row: Boss Factory as well as prizes up for grabs. You can sign up to attend the event HERE.

Saints Row launches on August 23rd for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. The cheapest price is currently $78 with free shipping from Amazon.

We recently went to go hands-on with Saints Row. In our preview, Kieron said: “After a few hours with Saints Row I’m convinced that Deep Silver Volition knows exactly what it’s doing and precisely what lapsed fans want out of a fresh start for the series. It all feels incredibly familiar, striking a balance between the more grounded first entries and the abject chaos that was kickstarted with the later ones, but it also plays as well as you’d want from a modern open-world sandbox.

All the sensibilities of a game from two generations ago with refinements in both gameplay and storytelling to match current tastes? That’s a winning combo in my books. I’m very keen to see how it all goes stretched out over the course of a full game but signs are remarkably positive so far.”

Furore over droopy GRM Trans Am cars

The #1 Garry Rogers Motorsport entry. Picture: 44 Photography

A furore has broken out in the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series over an apparent aerodynamic discrepancy exhibited by the front-running Garry Rogers Motorsport vehicles.

GRM has caused a stir given its cars have come to exhibit a pronounced droop in the rear windscreens and, in some cases, even in bodywork immediately above the rear windscreen.

According to Speedcafe.com sources, vehicles in such a state will generate more rear downforce than would otherwise be the case, because more air will flow over the rear wing.

The National Trans Am Series is, of course, essentially run as a spec category given cars are of TA2 specification.

While there are three eligible bodyshapes, of which GRM fields Ford Mustangs, technical regulations are tightly controlled.

With respect to the rear windscreen droop, several articles of said regulations would appear pertinent.

Article T2.1, entitled ‘Modification’, reads, in full:

a) Each Automobile must remain unmodified, in compliance with all aspects of these Technical Regulations and identical in all respects to the production make/model as supplied by the original vehicle manufacturer.

(b) Any aspect relating to the construction, modification and/or preparation of the Automobile including the location, fitment/mounting of any ancillary component that is not specifically authorized in the present regulations is prohibited.

Furthermore, the technical regulations also prescribed that components must be original equipment supplied by the vehicle manufacturer or controlled components, with limited exceptions.

Article T6, entitled ‘Chassis & Bodywork’, stipulates that “Modification to the Chassis/frame is prohibited.”

It also states that, “Repairs to any body panel must not change the shape of the panel to aid in aerodynamic performance,” and that, “The rear windscreen must be TA2 Specification/Five Star screen only.”

Speedcafe.com sources have suggested that a droop could be caused by the brackets on the inside of the rear windscreen being damaged or not sufficiently tightened.

It is a tactic which has been used in the NASCAR Cup Series, with a Stewart-Haas Racing entry penalized in 2018 for failing to have rigid rear window glass, for example.

Then, crew chief of the #4 entry in question, Rodney Childers, claimed that the bend in the roofline and rear windscreen which occurred at speed was inadvertent, and had been caused by a failure of a rear window brace.

In the National Trans Am Series matter, photographs of several Ford Mustang-bodied vehicles at a particular corner of Queensland Raceway, which capture those cars at approximately the same angle, are instructive.

Speedcafe.com has been supplied with five high-resolution images, shot by 44 Photography, from which the GRM Mustangs can be compared to those entered by two other competitors.

With respect to the GRM entries, Car #1 of series leader Nathan Herne, Car #45 of Lochie Dalton, and Car #73 of Owen Kelly feature the droop.

However, Car #03 of Ben Grice and Car #69 of Jon McCorkindale exhibit no such droop at all.

Interestingly, Car #03 is a current-spec vehicle, built late last year, with all updates, while Car #69 is a 2018 build.

Speedcafe.com is awaiting response from Category Administrator Liam Curkpatrick and/or the Australian Racing Group, which owns the rights to the series and is officially Category Manager, as at time of publication.

At this point in time, however, there is no confirmation that GRM has breached the series’ regulations.

It is understood that the issue was known about before the Queensland Raceway round, and indeed, photographs from earlier events this season show the droop also.

Speedcafe.com believes that a solution is currently being worked on, which would entail a change to the bracing to the Mustang-bodied cars.

At Ipswich last weekend, Herne was fastest in both practice sessions and Qualifying, while Kelly was next-fastest in the latter session, by a margin of 0.6051s over third-quickest qualifier, Wall Racing’s Tim Brook.

Herne went on to win all three races, officially leading all 47 laps which those races summed to.

Kelly was off at the first corner of Race 1 due to contact with Tim Brook and ended Lap 1 in 24th position yet finished eighth, then climbed to third position in Race 2 (progressive grid) and finished there again in Race 3 after starting fifth.

In the series standings, Herne’s margin over Kelly, who sits second, is 19 points, while Dalton occupies 11th position.

Herne also won the series last year, when he was a GRM driver but steered a Dodge Challenger-bodied car which was run out of Dream Racing Australia.

Garry and Barry Rogers, the latter of whom is the team’s Director, are not only stakeholders in Trans Am as competitors but also as the largest shareholders of the Australian Racing Group, which owns the series.

Round 6 of the season takes place at Sandown on September 16-18, when one of Herne or Kelly will likely secure the title.

The category will then be in action for an exhibition round, featuring the Trans Am 100, at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International in November.

COVIDSafe app has finally been scrapped

Health Minister Mark Butler said the “failed app” cost taxpayers more than $10 million to develop, a further $7 million on advertising, $2.1 million on upkeep and $2 million in staffing costs.

“This failed app was a colossal waste of more than $21 million of taxpayers money,” Mr Butler said.

“It was contact tracers working on the ground who were the real success story, not this failed app.”

App found 17 close contacts

The spread of the delta variant last year forced health authorities to abandon earlier efforts to identify each individual infected with the virus, raising questions about the usefulness of the app.

Even before the spread of delta, state and territory governments including NSW, Queensland and the ACT had either stopped using the app or never accessed it.

A study by public health experts from UNSW and the University of Queensland found the app had identified just 17 additional close contacts that were not located through contact tracing by NSW Health between May and November 2020.

Of the 619 positive COVID-19 cases recorded in NSW over this time, only 22 per cent were using the app, and the app detected just 15 per cent of true close contacts located by state-based contact tracers.

“In our study, COVIDSafe did not make a meaningful contribution to the COVID response in NSW during 2020. Instead, the app created a high workload for no clear benefit,” the researchers concluded.

Former social services minister Anne Ruston James Brickwood

Former social services minister Anne Ruston defended the app as having “served a purpose”.

“Even though [17] may seem like a small number, that could have had a very significant impact on the health outcomes or the economic outcomes for our country,” she told a senate committee of the number of cases it had identified.

The Labor-led committee recommended the Morrison government cease any further expenditure on the app.

The COVIDSafe app uses bluetooth technology to identify contacts who also have the app and then filters out all exposures other than those who have been within 1.5 meters of an infected person for a certain period of time. These contact details were made available to contact tracers.

clarification: An earlier version said the COVIDSafe app had cost $9 million. After the government provided further information, the figure was updated to $21 million.
