Ilhan Omar will win Democratic nomination for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, CNN projects

Omar, who is running for a third term in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, held off a primary challenge from former Minneapolis City Councilman Don Samuels and three other Democratic primary candidates, CNN projects.

Omar beat back a well-funded primary rival in 2020, but Samuels, a moderate, entered the race with higher name recognition in the Minneapolis-based district and the support of a big-spending super PAC.

Takeaways from the Vermont, Wisconsin and Michigan primaries

Samuels had run as a pro-police critic of Omar’s calls to “defund the police.” He and his wife de el successfully sued the city of Minneapolis to force it to increase police staffing levels to the 741 officers required by the city’s charter.

Momentum built behind what had been widely seen as a long-shot challenge after Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey endorsed Samuels last week. He was also backed by building trades unions, several suburban mayors and more moderate DFL leaders.

His close call could inspire another effort to oust Omar in 2024. Democrats currently control four out of the state’s eight US House seats to three for the Republicans and one vacancy.

Omar’s victory comes the week after two other liberal members of the “squad,” Missouri Rep. Cori Bush and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, also beat back primary challenges.

Votes were being counted in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont and Connecticut on Tuesday night following a round of primaries that will further clarify several of November’s key contests.

New Audi RS 3 Sedan and RS 3 Sportback arrive in Australia

The next generation Audi RS 3 Sedan and RS 3 Sportback have arrived in Australia, bringing more torque, heightened driving dynamics, a striking new design and a raft of innovative features that set it apart from its predecessor, and its competitors.

With its five-cylinder, high-performance engine, the Audi RS 3 is one-of-a-kind in the segment; the 2.5-litre TFSI engine delivering 500Nm of torque and boasting 294kW of power. It sprints to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, thanks to launch control.

The RS 3 Sedan and RS 3 Sportback consume 8.2 and 8.3-litres/100km respectively. For the first time, the RS 3 also features an exhaust system with a fully variable flap control system that supports intermediate positions.

The differences can be experienced in the various modes offered by the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. In the dynamic and RS Performance modes, for example, the flaps open much earlier – the emotional elements of the sound are even more pronounced.

The standard RS sports exhaust system brings out the unmistakable sound of the five-cylinder engine even more clearly. An RS torque splitter, installed for the first time in an Audi, makes the driving experience even more exhilarating too.

It replaces the previous rear axle differential with an upstream multiple disc clutch package to distribute torque between the rear wheels in a fully variable manner. This results in even greater stability and agility.

During dynamic driving, the torque splitter increases torque delivered to the outer rear wheel with the higher wheel load, which significantly reduces the tendency to understeer. In left-hand corners, it transmits the drive torque to the right rear wheel, and vice versa.

The difference in propulsive forces means that the new RS 3 turns into curves even better and follows the steering angle more precisely – especially at high speeds. Its RS Performance track and RS Torque Rear drift mode take advantage of this system.

Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” semi-slick tires, which are optionally available. Adaptive damper control supersedes the magnetic ride control of its predecessor. With adaptive dampers, sensors measure the movements of the vehicle body.

The pistons within the dampers contain solenoid valves that offer very energy-efficient control, allowing hydraulic fluid to flow faster or slower as required. The damping characteristics are adjusted accordingly to the road surface conditions and driving situation.

Audi drive select has an effect on the engine and transmission characteristics, the torque splitter, steering assistance, the adaptive dampers, and the exhaust flaps. This creates a broad range of driving experiences – from comfort, to highly dynamic.

On the outside, the Audi RS 3 features a wide RS bumper, redesigned Singleframe grille, and large air intakes. Behind the flared fenders, a slightly protruding air outlet creates a motorsport look. The front and rear (Sportback only) axle track have been widened.

The RS 3 comes standard-equipped with flat, V-shaped Matrix LED headlights, with dynamic turning lights and darkened bezels that feature digital daytime running lights around their outer downturned angles.

When the vehicle is opened, the RS 3 lettering appears on the driver’s side and a checkered flag appears in the pixel field of the other headlight, creating a dynamic scene. When driving, the checkered flag lights up on both sides.

Audi Sport delivers the RS 3 with 19-inch cast alloy wheels in a 5-spoke Y-style design, with RS branding. The motorsports-inspired finishing touches include the redesigned RS-specific rear bumper with built-in diffuser and the RS exhaust system.

Some exterior peripherals, such as the mirror caps, the inserts in the rocker panels, and the tailgate and roof edge spoilers, are available as an option in carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic for an even sportier look.

A total of eight exterior colors are available for the models, including the RS-specific Kyalami Green and Kemora Gray finishes. In the interior, too, many elements specific to the RS accentuate its sportiness.

The standard-equipped 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus displays the revolutions per minute in the ‘RS Runway’ design. In addition, there’s displays for G-forces, lap times, and acceleration from 0–100km/h, 0–200km/h, quarter mile, and eighth of a mile.

The RS-specific blinking shift indicator in manual transmission mode changes the rpm display from green to yellow to red, blinking in a manner identical to that used in motorsports, to indicate the ideal time to change gears.

It is also integrated into the head-up display, which is available for the first time in an A3 model, that projects relevant information onto the windshield in the driver’s direct line of sight.

The 10.1-inch touch display in the instrument panel also displays the coolant, engine, and transmission oil temperatures, as well as the G-forces and the tire pressures.

Carbon-fibre trim on the instrument panel and RS sport seats with RS embossing and contrast stitching (in Nappa leather) enhance the look. The latter are available with glossy black, Express red, or, for the first time, Micrommata green contrast stitching.

The optional RS design package plus adds seat shoulders and accents around the air vents in matching red or green, special floor mats with contrast stitching and RS embroidery, Alcantara steering wheel, and seatbelts with matching colored edges.

Standard specifications including an electronically opening and closing boot (Sportback), heated, folding and dimming exterior mirrors with memory, wireless Apple CarPlay, the head-up display, and electric front seats with 4-way lumbar support and memory function.

Color ambient lighting provides a sophisticated cabin character. The folding rear seat backrest (40:20:40) ensures that the new RS 3 is as fit for domestic duties too, and there’s a load of safety features as well.

In addition to the standard equipment of its predecessor, the new RS 3 Sedan and RS 3 Sportback gain exit warning with rear cross traffic alert, and Audi pre sense basic (seat belt pre-tensioning, window and sunroof closure in emergency situations).

Audi park assist and 360 degree cameras make the most intricate of urban environments a breeze too. Bundled with a 5-year unlimited kilometer warranty, there’s also the option of service plans, and an extended warranty.

These packages can be purchased back-to-back, and allows buyers to include the cost of warranty, servicing and roadside assistance for up to nine years, at the time of purchase. Four option packages will be available at launch.

These include the Carbon package, Matte aluminum styling package, RS design package plus and RS dynamic package plus. Priced at $91,391 for the Sportback and $93,891 for the Sedan (both plus on-roads), the new Audi RS 3 is available now.

Kate Middleton and Prince William send reply to little girl who invited Prince George to her sixth birthday party

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge must get a plethora of invitations to various events around the world, but it was their son prince george who was the subject of a rather sweet invite recently.

The prince was asked to celebrate the sixth birthday of a young girl but unfortunately he was unable to attend.

The girl’s mother received a response from prince william and Kate, who said they were “immensely touched” by invitation.

A letter sent from Kensington Palace on behalf of the couple was shared on Twitter, under the username @xxAimeeRoxyxx.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked me to thank you for your letter, in which you invite Prince George to your 6th Birthday party,” the letter from Prince William and Kate read, reports Hello magazine.

“I am sorry that it took so long to reply.

“Their Royal Highnesses were extremely grateful for your kind invitation. Having given careful consideration to the possibilities, however, I very much regret that Their Royal Highnesses reluctantly feel they have to decline.

It’s unclear whether Prince George knows the girl personally or whether she just had hopes of the future King attending her birthday party.

George recently celebrated his own birthday, turning nine on July 22.

He is currently on school holidays with Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four.

They are due to start at a new school in September when they move from Kensington Palace in London to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.

Adelaide Cottage meets the Cambridges’ desire for a “modest home” and being set within the large Windsor estate, it will give the children the privacy to play, ride their horses and walk their dog Orla without risk of being photographed.

The four-bedroom home will allow the family to be closer to Queen Elizabeth.

The monarch now permanently lives at Windsor Castle, a stone’s throw from the new home.

For the first time, all three Cambridge children will attend the same school, rumored to be Lambrook School, in Ascot, near Windsor Castle.

Before embarking on their new chapter at Windsor, the Cambridges are expected to join the Queen at Balmoral Castle where Her Majesty is enjoying a three-month summer getaway.

Lanning’s announcement comes less than a week after Wallabies captain Michael Hooper announced he will take an indefinite break from his rugby duties.

Cricket Australia’s head of women’s performance Shawn Flegler commended the skipper for making her wellbeing a priority after a busy international period.

“We’re proud of Meg for acknowledging that she needs a break and will continue to support her during this time,” he said.

“She’s been an incredible contributor to Australian cricket over the last decade, achieving remarkable feats both individually and as part of the team, and has been a brilliant role model for young kids.

Commercial fishers eyeing compensation as six offshore wind farm zones get green light

Trawl fishers have ramped up calls for compensation following the federal government’s announcement that it will establish six offshore wind energy zones.

Waters off Gippsland, Portland, the Hunter Valley, Illawarra, northern Tasmania, Perth and Bunbury have been earmarked for development.

But fishers are concerned they will be excluded from the sections of the ocean where the turbines are built.

The most progressed wind farm proposal is the Star of the South project in Gippsland.

“I think it’s obvious that Australia is moving to a lower carbon future,” South East Trawl Fishing Industry Association executive officer Simon Boag said.

“The problem we have is that the federal government has already given out rights … to go commercial fishing.

“Then they appear to be giving out a second set of rights to put in wind farms.

“The two are obviously to some extent mutually exclusive.”

If built, the Star of the South wind farm may resemble Veja Mate in Germany.(Supplied: Star of South)

Bottom line for fishers

Mr Boag’s organization represents the interests of owners, fishers and sellers in the trawl fishery of south-eastern Australia.

He said fishing or quota rights sat “in the balance sheets of fishing businesses”.

“Fishing businesses borrow against them. They’re bought and sold between fishing businesses,” Mr Boag said.

Fishers already work around oil and gas platforms in Bass Strait.

Mr Boag said the exploration phase for new oil and gas developments was intrusive for the industry, but the longer-term exclusion zones were only a few hundred square meters.

“These wind farms are more or less a 500-square-kilometre exclusion,” he said.

“We’re assuming trawlers can’t go in there.

“What we need and want is that if we’re giving up our rights to go fishing and they’re going to build a wind farm and we’re all going to enjoy the electricity … that the fishing industry is adequately compensated.”

A 60-day consultation period was initiated alongside last week’s wind energy zone announcement.

Star of the South acting chief executive officer Erin Coldham encouraged people who used the waters to engage in the consultation process.

She said Star of the South’s turbines would be between seven and 25 kilometers from the coast of Woodside Beach, McLoughlins Beach and Port Albert.

“We’re aiming to get power into the grid by the end of this decade and we think that’s important, noting Yallourn [power station] is closing by 2028,” Ms Coldham said.

Judges overturn 7 murder convictions after misconduct allegations

His father died while Nelson Gonzalez was in prison. Alfredo Gonzalez couldn’t go to his daughter’s wedding. And Marilyn Mulero missed out on her two children’s childhoods.

It’s been hard — I lost my brother,” Mulero added, her voice breaking. He was my strength.”

These are three of the Chicago families affected by murder convictions tainted by allegations of misconduct by former Chicago police Detective Reynaldo Guevara.

In a historic move Tuesday, judges overturned seven murder convictions in a single day. Many of the exonerees have spent decades in prison for slayings that took place between 1989 and 1996.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office had filed motions in the seven cases and an eighth to be heard at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. In an unprecedented move, State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced at a news conference Tuesday morning that prosecutors “can no longer stand by these convictions,” leading to the mass dismissal.

“Rebuilding the community trust in our justice system requires that when we find an injustice, we work diligently to correct it,” Foxx said. “Today marks another step in that process at the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.”

Exoneres, family members and supporters spoke with reporters after the court hearings. Emotions ran high as people cheered, cried and hugged. Some were holding signs showing the faces of Guevara accusers.

Mulero spoke as the first woman to have a conviction overturned due to allegations of misconduct by Guevara.

“I had to be a strong individual because I had two toddlers when I was incarcerated. I had to fight for them. I had to be strong for them, ”Mulero said, wiping tears from her eyes.

She served 28 years in prison — including five years on death row and was released in April 2020.

“There’s other women out there that are incarcerated, that are innocent, that I will keep fighting for, just like our other Guevara victims that are in there,” she added.

Tuesday’s development marks 31 convictions overturned since 2016 in connection to Guevara’s alleged misconduct, claims that range from manipulating witnesses to fabricating evidence.

Alfredo Gonzalez’s family, who was at the courthouse for the hearings Tuesday, was itching to see him. He had been serving a life sentence after his arrest in 1990.

“We’ve been waiting for a very long time. My dad got taken away from us when I was 3, my brother was 7, ”his daughter from him Maria Gonzalez said. “We are just ready to drive over there and pick him up.”

Nelson Gonzalez, who served 22 years and was released in 2016, called on Foxx to seek charges against Guevara.

This was a conspiracy created by Mr. Guevara and other agents. And I’m asking Kim Foxx to press charges, to pursue, to prosecute not only Guevara, but the other CPD agents that helped him convict these individuals,” he said. “They created a chaos within many families. And we’re not going to stop. We’re going to keep going. We’re going to keep pushing, we’re going to keep pushing.”

Gonzalez said he plans on going back to school to study criminal justice.

“I would love to be a lawyer,” he said. “I know what the journey is, so I can speak from both sides. So, that’s what I’m gonna be focused on, and family, and making sure my mom’s OK, and continue to help the community. I’m not going to give up just because I was vindicated.”

The other men exonerated Tuesday included Carlos Andino, who had been serving a 60-year sentence, Johnny Flores, who served 20 years, and Jaime Rios, who served 18 years. David Colon’s conviction was vacated last month after having served 26 years in prison.

The conviction of an eighth Guevara accuser, Louis Robinson, was not thrown out Tuesday. Robinson is still serving a 60-year sentence after his arrest in 1996. He “remains in custody pending further court proceedings,” Foxx said in a news release.

“Louis Robinson, you know we will continue to fight for you,” Mulero said. “Today was the day that wasn’t your day, but your day is going to come. It is coming.”

At the state’s attorney’s office news conference, Foxx said Guevara had repeatedly pleaded the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself “and then when asked questions, was not truthful.” She added that her office de ella hasn’t actively pursued charges against Guevara yet.

Our first priority was ensuring that we could stand by these convictions, the next step of that: We’re going to review these cases, and also review the possibility for charges where appropriate,” she said.

Foxx pointed out that there might also be issues with the statute of limitations to prosecute the former detective.

She also spoke about the pain of those who lost family members to the homicides. Guevara’s alleged misconduct, she said, hurts them too.

To lose a loved one is difficult enough — and to lose a loved one to violence. And to believe that you have someone being held accountable, only to be told that conviction doesn’t stand, is disheartening,” Foxx said. “(Guevara’s) harm is not just to those who may have been imprisoned for crimes that they didn’t commit, but to families who are looking for justice for the loss of their loved ones.”

Looking ahead, Foxx said three other cases will be reviewed in the coming weeks. If those convictions — and Robinson’s — are tossed, it would bring the tally for vindicated Guevara accusers up to 35.

“We expect to resolve additional cases with similar court action in the upcoming weeks,” Foxx said. “We also anticipate that more individuals may come forward, and we will review their cases as they come.”

What do we want?” Mulero asked before leaving the mic setup at Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Justice!” the group of supporters, families and exonerees behind her responded.

When do we want it?”

“Now!”

LIV Golf players court ruling to ban from PGA Tour events

A federal judge in California ruled that three golfers who joined Saudi-backed LIV Golf will not be able to compete in the PGA Tour’s post-season.

US district judge Beth Labson Freeman made her decision in San Jose after attorneys for the sides each spoke for about an hour. Freeman said she didn’t consider the golfers faced irreparable harm because of the big money they were guaranteed by joining LIV, a key issue in the case.

“There simply is no irreparable harm in this case,” PGA Tour attorney Elliot Peters said.

READMORE: Cripps learns fate for crunching hit on Lion

The three suspended golfers were seeking a temporary restraining order, which Freeman denied. Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford claimed they should be able to play where they want to, each saying in letters last month to the PGA Tour, “I am a free agent and independent contractor.”

They are among 10 players who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour last week — including Phil Mickelson.

Robert Walters, an antitrust litigator representing the golfers, noted this would be their opportunity on a big playoff stage, “effectively the Super Bowl of golf” because of its “significant income opportunities.”

Freeman responded that the LIV Tour earnings potential was also great and asked whether players might have been able to wait until the conclusion of the PGA Tour season to depart for the new tour.

Walters argued there were only 48 spots and they would have filled up according to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, to which Freeman said she agreed with that stance but that the golfers stood to gain far more financially joining LIV than the money they might have earned on the PGA Tour.

“This is an extraordinarily attractive financial opportunity but it’s much more than that,” Walters said, saying the harm done is that “players lose intangible benefits” such as qualifications for the major tournaments as well as other marquee invitationals.

“This is the holy grail because everybody wants to compete in and prevail in major championships, but it’s not just the majors,” Walters said. He noted that the PGA Tour inferred these golfers would put a “taint” or “stench” on the tour’s image by playing, perhaps even wearing LIV Tour gear in PGA Tour tournaments.

LIV Golf stars sue PGA Tour

“We’re disappointed that Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones won’t be allowed to play golf. No one gains by banning golfers from playing,” LIV Golf said in a statement.

The first of three FedEx Cup playoff events begin Friday (AEST).

Two tournaments offer $15 million prize funds, and the player who wins the FedEx Cup at East Lake in Atlanta gets $18 million — thus the urgency for Freeman to rule. This case could go to trial next year, with the possibility of an injunction hearing in late September or early October, according to Peters.

Peters said lifting the suspensions of the golfers and allowing them to play would “change the status quo” for the PGA Tour and “give them a fabulous platform” to promote the LIV tour while competing in a PGA event.

“I think it’s a huge problem,” he said. “… The Commissioner needs the ability to protect the Tour. This is a very dire situation for the Tour.”

Gooch (No.20), Jones (No.65) and Swafford (No.67) are among nine players who have joined LIV Golf and finished the regular season among the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings. The other six who joined LIV Golf are not asking to play in the tour’s post-season.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan issued a memo to members that included: “With today’s news, our players, fans and partners can now focus on what really matters over the next three weeks: the best players in the world competing in the FedEx Cup playoffs, capping off an incredibly compelling season with the crowning of the FedEx Cup champion at the Tour Championship.”

Footage shows moment missing Queensland family found in outback NSW

New footage shows the moment a family of four was spotted and rescued in outback NSW after they were missing for 48 hours on a long-distance trip across three states.

Darian Aspinall, 27, was traveling with her children Winter Bellamy, two, and Koda Bellamy, four, and the kid’s grandmother, 50-year-old Leah Gooding from Queensland to Adelaide where they were moving.

the family had run out of food and water when a helicopter spotted their car off-track 50 kilometers south east of Tibooburra, in the far north-west of NSW, late on Tuesday afternoon.

Images show the family waving up at the helicopter with their clothes to get the pilot’s attention.

“The ladies there were waving at us and so as we passed down one side I opened the window and waved back at them to let them know that we’d seen them,” Nick Shew, AeroTech Hems pilot, said.

Police say Google maps took them off track onto a dirt road away from a sealed highway where they got bogged down.

9News understands they tried to walk for four hours for help but decided to return to their car where they remained for 48 hours before they were found.

“It was plainly clear when we landed and got out of the aircraft the sense of relief that they had, it was an emotional moment,” Shew said.

Missing teen Kiely Rodni may have been abducted after a party in California, authorities say

Kiely was at the Prosser Family Campground on Friday night and was last seen around 12:30 am Saturday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

“We are treating her disappearance as an abduction right now because we have not been able to locate her vehicle,” sheriff’s spokesperson Angela Musallam said.

Officials are looking for Kiely’s silver 2013 Honda CRV and say her phone has been out of service since the party. Kiely is White, 5’7″ and about 118 pounds. She has blond hair, hazel eyes and a nose ring. Kiely was last seen wearing a black tank top and Dickies brand pants.

There were 200-300 juveniles at the party, which was in a wooded area, Musallam said in a news conference Tuesday, and “someone knows something.”

“We are pleading, we are urging anyone who was at that party to please come forward,” she said.

Kiely’s loved ones are wondering how no one saw the teen leave, CNN affiliate KCRA reported.

“I can’t believe it. There has to have been one person — there were people sitting in cars, there were people everywhere around this place,” Kiely’s friend Sammi Smith told KCRA.

The grounds are about 17 miles north of Lake Tahoe and 36 miles from Reno, Nevada.

Black kids go missing at a higher rate than white kids. Here's why we don't hear about them

About 150 law enforcement officers, including the FBI, search and rescue, canines and more than 100 volunteers are combing the area around where Rodni was last seen.

“There is no evidence that supports an abduction, but we are not ruling anything out,” said Placer County Sheriff Troy Sander Tuesday. “We won’t rule anything out. This is a missing persons case, a search and rescue case.”

On Monday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office flew a search helicopter over the area.

“Despite the numerous resources we have utilized, Kiely and her vehicle are still missing,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are currently coordinating with the California Highway Patrol, Truckee Police, FBI, and the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office as we continue our search for Kiely.”

Kiely’s mother, Lindsey Rodni-Nieman, said the wait has been grueling.

“My head is all over the place and I’m terrified. Bad thoughts are very strong and hard to keep at bay,” Rodni-Nieman told KCRA. “But I’m trying to hold out hope, you know, that we’ll find her, that she’ll come home.”

Friends and family have set up a website, FindKiely.com, to help with the search. And a GoFundMe account has been established to fund a reward for information leading to Kiely’s safe return.

CNN’s Cheri Mossburg contributed to this report.
