Comedian Chris Rock joked about Will Smith during his Sydney show, but that’s not what it was all about

Chris Rock fans who were hoping he’d go into detail about that Will Smith slap at the Oscars in March would have left the weekend’s show in Sydney disappointed.

In a wide-ranging show that lasted almost two hours, Rock covered topics as diverse as the Kardashians, Meghan Markle, US politics, abortion, #MeToo, his daughters Lola and Zara, and dating as a single man in his 50s.

But when it came to the Oscars, which dominated headlines after Smith took to the stage to slap Rock, the comedian only made floating references, including opening Saturday’s show by assuring the audience he was okay.

He later pointed out that he was hit by the actor who played Ali in reference to Smith’s starring role in the 2001 film in which he portrayed three-time heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali. Rock joked that he himself wouldn’t even be able to play Floyd Mayweather.

He also said he can’t bring himself to watch Men In Black again.

Rock is currently touring Australia. He’s already performed shows in Melbourne and on the Gold Coast, with his second Sydney show taking place tonight before he heads to Adelaide and Brisbane. His Ego Death World Tour is his first in five years.

Rock drew a massive audience to his Saturday show, with only a few seats left empty in the 9,000-capacity theater. And the audience was not only large, but engaged, punctuating each punchline with guffaws.

Fans were also forced to adhere to a particularly strict rule – no photography or recording devices were allowed inside. Smart phones were sealed in a pouch that had to be unlocked by a special device after the show.

The show started 45 minutes late with a warm-up act by comedian Rick Ingram, who decimated those who dared to sit in the front row.

Rock was dressed in all white from head to toe. His show from him was more on the amusing side than clutch-your-stomach hilarious, but the Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian, who has earned his place from him as one of comedy’s brightest stars, was definitely worth seeing.

The Australian-leg of Rock’s tour is scheduled to wrap up in Queensland August 20.

Cameron Munster potential Dolphins contract would be biggest in NRL, says James Graham

Former Bulldogs captain James Graham has said the Dolphins would need to offer Cameron Munster the biggest per-season deal in the history of the NRL in order to pry him away from Melbourne, as the expansion franchise continues to hunt a marquee man for their future.

Graham’s comments on Triple M came after journalist Ben Dobbin declared “in 2024 Munster is a Dolphin, that’s my gut”.

“I think it’ll be a four year deal,” Dobbin added, agreeing with Gorden Tallis’ prediction that the contract would be worth around $6 million over that period.

“We all know Wayne has got the structures in place around what he thinks players are worth, and how that affects the salary cap – but look at some of these players in this rich list that are out there,” Graham said in response.

The rich list, which was published in The Daily Telegraph over the weekend, lists Nathan Cleary as the highest paid player in the NRL at $1.3 million per year. Graham said Munster would likely set back the Dolphins to contract in the region of $1.5 million-a-season.

“A lot of them are people [on this rich list] who are playing at the club they’ve been at for a long time. I think for Munster to go onto the open market, to go to a new franchise team… he’ll be the highest paid player in the game.”

Dobbin put forward Latrell Mitchell as a ‘smoky’ to reunite with Bennett in Brisbane, but a departure from the Rabbitohs seems exceptionally unlikely; by all accounts, Mitchell is as happy as he’s ever been, and loves the club.

Future moves involving players like Mitchell were the entire reason for letting Adam Reynolds leave – and the Rabbitohs are hopeful of inking not only their star fullback, but also Cody Walker and Damien Cook to extensions in the coming weeks.

Coach Jason Demetriou told the Sun-Herald he was ‘very confident’ that all three would be extending their stay. The trio are currently all off-contract at the end of next season.

Former NRL enforcer Tallis laughed off suggestions of Mitchell reuniting with Bennett in Queensland, saying it was too far away from the Rabbitohs star’s farm near Taree.

“There’s a bigger picture for him,” Tallis said.

Taree, in northern NSW, is a three-and-a-half hour drive from Redfern, and Mitchell regularly commutes between the two places – a much harder route if he were in Brisbane.

“I’ve never seen a guy more settled – and going back to country, and doing what he’s doing, that’s more important to Latrell now than money,” Tallis said.

“I actually think the balance he’s got in his life, especially at this moment in time, I think he’s the happiest. You just watch him play, the way he’s talking.”

On the back of some of the best footy of his young career, Mitchell and the Rabbitohs are surging.

Since his return from injury, Souths have won six out of seven, including three against top eight teams – their only loss coming in golden point against the Sharks.

St Clare’s principal Kerrie McDiarmid to lead St Mary’s Cathedral College

The head of all-girls St Clare’s College has been appointed the new principal of one of Sydney’s oldest all-boys schools as it prepares to become fully co-educational.

Kerrie McDiarmid will take on the role as head of St Mary’s Cathedral College, the historic inner-city boys’ school, which is set to expand into a kindergarten to year 12 co-ed campus after more than a century of single-sex education.

She will be the first woman to head the college – the oldest of 150 Catholic schools in the Sydney Archdiocese – which is the alma mater of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who campaigned there in the week before the election with Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher.

“Having boys and girls together at a school with such a long history is a real opportunity to help prepare them for the world after they graduate,” McDiarmid said.

The proposal to shift the school, which was established in 1824 and run by three different religious orders until 2016, to become co-ed was put to parents in June. If given the green light, it will expand into a kindergarten to year 12 co-ed school with a second city campus nearby and capacity to double enrollments to up to 1400 students.

St Mary’s is part of a wave of Sydney all-boys schools converting to co-ed: Cranbrook, which has admitted only boys for more than a century, will be co-educational from years 7 to 12. Newington, another high-fee private boys school, put a co-ed proposal to parents earlier this year. Barker and The Armidale School became co-ed in the past decade.

“I don’t see all schools going down the co-ed path, but it makes absolute sense for this school. There is demand for that in the [inner-city] and there has been a definite movement towards co-ed experience. We want to produce well-rounded students who have the skills and perspectives, like respect, co-operation and initiative, that allow them to flourish at school and after they leave,” McDiarmid said.

St Mary’s, which charges $5,189 for year 12, would be the fifth new co-ed school created under Sydney Catholic Schools in the past 10 years. A proposal to overhaul De La Salle Senior College in Cronulla into a year 7 to 12 co-ed school is with parents for consultation, while De La Salle in Ashfield is set to merge with an adjacent girls’ school, Bethlehem College.

2022 Mercedes Benz EQB price and specifications

This could be the best electric car option for Australian families.

Based on the Mercedes-Benz GLB, the new Mercedes EQB crossover combines green credentials with seven-seat versatility.

It’s the only seven seat electric car on sale, as Tesla is not currently accepting orders for its Model X, and Korea’s Hyundai Ioniq 7 and Kia EV9 duo are not available yet.

Which means the electric Mercedes-Benz EQB is the only option for electric car customers who need more than five seats.

Priced from $87,800 plus on-road costs as a five-seater, the new Mercedes EQB 250 is available with an extra for of seats for a further $2900.

The EQB 250 drives the front wheels with a 140kW/385Nm electric motor linked to a 66.5kWh battery delivering 371 kilometers of range.

That’s the same hardware found in the slightly smaller EQA, which costs $11,000 less. The electric EQB costs $27,900 more than a petrol-powered two-wheel-drive GLB 200, or $13,900 more than all-wheel-drive GLB 250.

Customers who want more power can pick the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz EQB that uses two motors to deliver a combined 215kW and 520Nm, which delivers a 6.2-second dash to 100km/h at the cost of a slightly reduced 360 kilometers of range.

The all-wheel-drive model costs $106,700 plus on-roads and is not available with seven seats.

Both variants have twin 10.25-inch displays, artificial leather, multi-colour ambient lighting and dual-zone climate control.

A comprehensive array of driver aids includes active cruise control, auto emergency braking, lane keeping assistance and a 360-degree camera.

The EQB accepts charge at a maximum rate of 100kW, which is a little slower than rival machines sold by Tesla, Kia and Hyundai.

Australian-made videogame tops global charts as players flock to Cult of the Lamb | Games

The Australian-made video game Cult of the Lamb has topped global gaming charts on the first weekend of its release.

“It’s just blown up, it’s been pretty crazy,” developer Julian Wilton, from Massive Monster, said.

In Cult of the Lamb, the player character, an adorable but possessed lamb, has their life saved by an ominous deity; as repayment, they must form a cult to appease the deity, growing its following by launching crusades, collecting resources and venturing out into the game’s five regions to defeat rival cults.

Since its global launch in the early hours of Friday morning, the game reached No 1 on the US Switch store, the main outlet for Nintendo games, and Wilton has high hopes for early sales figures.

“I wouldn’t be surprised in the first month if we hit like a million units, which is just crazy,” he said.

On PC gaming platform Steam, Cult of the Lamb had seen hundreds of thousands of downloads, and while Wilton can’t reveal the exact figures due to Massive Monster’s backing by UK-listed Devolver Digital, pre-sales numbers show the game has already recovered its investment costs.

It is rare for an Australian-made game to see such global success, with 2017’s Hollow Night by Adelaide’s Team Cherry a recent example.

Gamers have given Cult of the Lamb the thumbs up so far, with more than 8,000 positive Steam reviews, and some predicting it would become a cult classic.

But the large number of gamers trying the game have uncovered bugs and the Massive Monster team is working to fix them, devoting the next 12 months to updates and new content.

“There’s just so many people playing the game that there’s no way you can find some of these bugs that people are finding,” Wilton said.

Some of the problems that come with Massive Monster’s success would be nice to have.

“We’ve just got to figure out what to do with all this money now,” Wilton joked.

In 2020/21, Australian game development studios made $226m, with 82% of that money from overseas markets, according to figures from the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association.

Recent Aussie hits included Unpacking by Witch Beam in Brisbane, Hollow Knight by Team Cherry in Adelaide, and in Melbourne, Untitled Goose Game by House House and Florence by the studio Mountains.

The federal government offered tax breaks for developers in 2021 and pledged fresh funding through Screen Australia in March.

Erik ten Hag cancels Manchester United day off, running exercise, distance covered, highlights, latest, updates

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag reportedly canceled a planned day off for his players and forced them into a humiliating running exercise as the fallout from the shock Brentford defeat continues.

Ten Hag, who oversaw a successful pre-season but has endured a nightmare start in the Premier League, was helpless as he watched his side capitulate at the Brentford Community Stadium.

It was United’s second straight defeat after the opening day loss to Brentford and consigned the Red Devils to the bottom of the Premier League ladder for the first time in 30 years.

And according to The Telegraph’s Jason Burt, ten Hag was furious with what his team served up against the Bees and ordered his team to come to the club’s training ground for a punishing extra session.

“With United not playing again until next Monday, at home to Liverpool, ten Hag had intended to allow his squad not to report to their training HQ, Carrington, for a recovery day,” Burt wrote.

“Instead, having told the players that their performance was ‘shocking’ and agreeing with the post-match analysis that they had played ‘like kids’ ten Hag demanded a response with an intense training session which, surprisingly after a game, included an element of running.”

Over the course of 90 minutes, United ran 95.6km as a team while Brentford chalked up 109.4km.

The shocking margin was another element of ten Hag’s brutal punishment, as Burt claims the Dutchman forced his players to cover 13.8km throughout the training session conducted in 30-degree heat, “exactly the distance they collectively ran less than the Brentford players during the game .”

With a clash against bitter rivals Liverpool on the horizon, things could get much, much worse before they get better for ten Hag and Manchester United.

Kumanjayi Walker inquest no longer starting in Yuendumu at family’s request

The inquest into the death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker, who was shot by a Northern Territory police officer in 2019, will no longer begin in his home community of Yuendumu.

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this article contains an image of a person who has died, used with the permission of their family.

Kumanjayi Walker died after he was shot by Constable Zachary Rolfe during an attempted arrest in Yuendumu in November 2019.

Constable Rolfe was found not guilty of murder after a five-week Supreme Court trial earlier this year.

Northern Territory Coroner, Libby Armitage, will preside over a three-month inquest into his death, which had earlier been flagged to start in the remote community, about 300 kilometers from Alice Springs.

‘Change in circumstances’ in Yuendumu

Legal representatives of Mr Walker’s family and community today told the Coroner it would no longer be “appropriate” for the inquest to start in Yuendumu.

Representatives for the Lane, Walker and Robertson families, who cared for Mr Walker, said a “change in circumstances” in Yuendumu meant their feelings towards the inquest being held in community had changed.

Cost of living: Vegetable, iceberg lettuce prices finally expected to drop

There is finally some good news for your grocery bill, with the price of many vegetables expected to drop back to regular prices.

The change comes as growers begin to report that they are back on track with their crops after flooding earlier in the year devastated crops in NSW and Queensland, leaving empty shelves in supermarkets as well as fast food stores such as KFC having to substitute lettuce for cabbage in their burgers.

speaking to the ABCMulgowie Yowie Salads director Shannon Moss said the price of vegetables – such as iceberg lettuce which peaked at around $12 a head at the height of the crisis – have remained high for so long because farmers essentially had to start from scratch.

“You have to remember a seedling in a nursery takes about four to six weeks to grow, then it’s another eight weeks in the ground to grow lettuce,” he said.

“So you’re looking at three to four months to grow any kind of lettuce.”

And while the industry still faces challenges caused by labor shortages, high fuel costs and fertilizer costs, the better weather has at least helped even out supply issues.

Mr Moss says he’s now back in the swing of things, producing about 30,000 cos lettuces a week which get sent out to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

“We’ve had nice weather where a lot of growers have got stock coming on,” Mr Moss said.

But while price drops are coming, Toowoomba-based greengrocer Bevan Betros warned people not to expect them to come down immediately.

“I don’t think they’ll get much cheaper just for the next week or two,” he told ABC. “They’ll get back down as the warm weather comes on, as we get into spring.

“We should be getting down under $2 again, hopefully in September.”

The Block 2022 exclusive: How Omar and Oz stepped up their game to win Main Bathroom Week after coming last in the House Decider challenge

Best-mates Omar and Oz have proved they are a force to be reckoned with on The Block after going from last place to winners in just a week.

The Western Sydney men won Main Bathroom Week with a country-meets-contemporary bathroom the judges adored.

Stream the latest episodes of The Block for free on 9Now.

Omar and Oz revealed it was losing the House Decider challenge that inspired them to significantly step up their interior design game with their main bathroom.

“What made us work very strong together was the 48-hour challenge we failed in,” Oz told 9Entertainment in an exclusive video interview.

“I looked at Omar, Omar looked at me and he’s like, ‘Do you know what? Let’s get this, we gotta put our A game [in]’.”

EPISODE FIVE RECAP: Shaynna Blaze blasts one couple in first Room Reveal of 2022 while Omar and Oz make a stunning comeback

It was the perfect time to bring their “A game” because winning Main Bathroom Week didn’t just offer the usual $10,000 to add to their renovation budget. The win also came with a $250,000 kitchen upgrade from Winning Appliances, which is a huge advantage for Kitchen Week and a big incentive for buyers on auction day.

The pair had done their research before going on The Blocksending each other photos of houses they liked.

But after the judges told Omar and Oz their House Decider challenge bedroom was far from the country style they expected from a historic house in regional Victoria, they went harder on the country and heritage look than they had planned.

“We had so much inspiration coming in… that first bathroom, before this we probably never would have picked those tiles, we would’ve never kept the VJ paneling in the house and all these other things,” Omar explained.

“But when we realized there was going to be a massive modern extension area where we can show our true colours, [we thought] it would just be nice to let it flow through.”

When it comes to designing a room, it’s not just about style. Functionality is just as important as style, if not more so, and can be the difference between winning and losing points at Room Reveals.

Omar and Oz kept this front of mind when they started designing the bathroom and it paid off. The large shower size, hidden toilet and plentiful storage meant the pair had thought of how the space would be used, not just what it looks like.

“We made sure that the functionality of the bathroom was spot on to choose the tiles, the floor tiles, the lighting, the color palette that goes with it and the VJ paneling to keep it that country vibe,” Oz said.

“We knew what we wanted, we just had to make it come to life.”

The friends admit they think the other teams underestimated their design skills when they first arrived on The Blockbut they won’t be making that mistake again.
