Release of NSW Broderick report into toxic culture was dehumanizing, advocate for sexual assault survivors says

The release of the report into the workplace culture in NSW Parliament was “dehumanizing” and “frustrating”, a former Liberal staffer and advocate for sexual assault survivors says.

Dhanya Mani, who publicly aired allegations of indecent assault against a colleague in 2019, said the report had been handed down with no survivors present.

Conducted by former sex discrimination commissioner Elizabeth Broderick, the investigation lifted the lid on a “toxic” culture in state parliament.

It found one in three staff had experienced bullying or sexual harassment in the past five years.

Three men and two women reported they had been subjected to an actual or attempted sexual assault at work.

“The optics of this report being released, showed MPs controlling the conversation with survivors completely omitted from that picture,” Ms Mani said.

“It was just something that was very dehumanizing and frustrating. If anything it feeds into these troubling power dynamics that Broderick and her team spoke about in their reports.

“Where they said the power imbalance between staff and MPs was a leading driver that underpins the causes for misconduct.”

Hearing their experiences being addressed would have been a first for many survivors, Ms Mani said, and leaders of political parties missed an opportunity to stand with them.

As the only survivor advocate representative on the parliamentary advisory group into sexual harassment, bullying and misconduct, she felt particularly aggrieved with the political leaders.

“I’m mystified that neither leader reached out to me in my capacity in that role, to consult on their statements or the way in which they wanted to approach their responses to this report being handed down,” she said.

“To feel that, even when I’m here that I’m not being seen, that my expertise isn’t really been utilized, just makes me also feel really traumatized.”

Almost 450 people working at the NSW parliament responded to a survey which found widespread bullying and everyday sexism.

The report found the human cost of the abuse was high with staff describing the impact on their mental health, their relationships and their career as “devastating”.

2023 BMW X5 M Shows A Little More Grille While Testing At The Nurburgring

The updated BMW X5 M has been seen testing for the first time since March, and this time we’ve been treated to a better view of its front grille.

Changes for the updated 2023 model are expected to be fairly limited, so what glimpses we get of the grille may be important. As you’d expect for an M model, there are a lot of air inlets to feed the engine.

The biggest change, though, appears to be on the kidneys, which are farther apart and have horizontal slats. The 2022 model, on the other hand, has vertical grille slats that obfuscate the distinction between each side of the unit.

Read Also: 2023 BMW X5M Adds Redesigned Taillights Into The Mix, Shows More Of Its Face

Fortunately for fans of restraint, it also appears that the kidney grilles will remain a sensible size, and won’t grow to gargantuan proportions as they have on the likes of the upcoming XM, say. The lower grille sections may also be redesigned.

Elsewhere, BMW has opted to put more camouflage on the rear of this test vehicle. That’s a bit of an odd decision, since we’ve already seen the X5 M testing with its rear end bared.

Our spy photographers didn’t manage to get a look inside the SUV, but BMW’s recent activity suggests that the X5 M will get its fancy new curved display that combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment system.

Rumors suggest, meanwhile, that the 2023 X5 M will only be offered as a Competition model and that it will be equipped with the new S68 engine that is set to make its debut in the XM. The X5 M will only be a mild hybrid, though, which means it’s unlikely to be as powerful as the XM, which is rated at 740 hp (552 kW/750 PS) and 738 lb-ft (999 Nm) of torque.

The X5 M is expected to make its debut at the end of 2022 and to be sold as a 2023 model year vehicle.

Isaiah Papali’i backflip, Wests Tigers contract, transfer news, Billy Slater, rugby league legends, news, highlights

Rugby league legend Billy Slater has slammed Isaiah Papali’i’s potential Tigers backflip following the news the 23-year-old would make a decision at the season’s end.

Reports suggest the backrow enforcer will honor his contract and ply his trade for the merger club in 2023, but doubts still linger over Papali’i’s future.

The 23-year-old penned three-year deal with the Tigers late last year, but after the sacking of Michael Maguire the young gun said he wants to have “no regrets.”

“Obviously people ask me about it, just even on the street or family and friends are hitting me up but that’s kind of for my manager look after and even if I don’t stay here or I do go next year, I want to make sure that this year has no regrets,” he said to 9 News.

“When I did sign it was talking to Madge — he’s an awesome coach. That rattled the cage a bit and I guess you have to have those conversations and I guess that was a massive factor for me.”

Now, Slater has been left stunned that Papali’i could potentially backflip on his deal and urged him to honor his contract.

City to Surf 2022: Start time, road closures, routes

Special event clearways will be in place along the route with parked cars towed from 1am to 4pm, so make sure to check the route and any signage before leaving your car.

NSW Police reminded motorists and residents to pay close attention to road closures and parking rules in place throughout Sunday. “Vehicles left in special event clearways – even those with local parking permits – will be towed away and fees apply,” Detective Superintendent John Duncan said.

Runners will set off from Hyde Park, at the intersection of Park and College streets, before traveling down William Street, through Kings Cross Tunnel and along New South Head Road towards Rose Bay.

“Heartbreak Hill” marks the halfway point and one of the most scenic parts of the course, but you won’t spot too many runners taking in the view as they battle up the infamous slope.

The second half of the course winds through Vaucluse before curling south onto Old South Head Road and then Military Road, when runners are hit with ocean views and salty air as they descend towards the finish line at the Bondi foreshore.

Starting times

Runners are staggered to allow for the different pace of participants. The first runners set off at 7.40am, with the last group leaving the CBD at 9.40am. See the full starting schedule below.

Sydney has a habit of turning the good weather on for the annual City to Surf and, with a top of 19 degrees and the lightest of showers in the morning, the forecast is unlikely to detect thousands of supporters from lining the streets on Sunday.

Here are some of the best places to sit back and watch the action while still enjoying a view.

Can Your iPad Run Apple iPadOS 16?

Apple’s next-gen operating systems are currently in public beta, meaning early adopters can test iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura on their personal devices before a final fall release.

Naturally, OS updates mean that some older hardware gets phased out of the support cycle. However, iPadOS 16 is unique in that some features are exclusive to Apple tablets equipped with the Apple M1 chip. So, which iPads will run iPadOS 16, and how can you tell which versions have the M1 chip? We’ll break it down for you.

stage manager

Stage Manager

Among the features exclusive to devices with the M1 chip is Stage Manager, Apple’s new window-focused multitasking tool. There are two ways to see if your iPad runs an M1. First, check the model number on the back of your device. Currently, the devices utilizing the M1 chip include:

  • The 5th-generation iPad Air, introduced in 2022. It comes in 64GB and 256GB iterations. The model numbers are A2588, A2589, or A2591.
  • The 5th-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch, introduced in 2021. It comes in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB versions. The model numbers are A2378, A2461, A2379, or A2462.
  • The 3rd-generation iPad Pro 11-inch, introduced in 2021. It comes in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB flavors. The model numbers are A2377, A2459, A2301, or A2460.

Alternatively, you can go into your iPad’s Settings menu and tap General > About. You should see the iPad’s details at the top of the screen, including the model name. If you have an iPad Air (5th generation), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation), or iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation), then you have an M1 device that can utilize virtually all of the iPadOS 16 update features.

about menu on ipados

To clarify, we say virtually due to the Reference Mode feature that offers a unique, color-accurate screen mode via the XDR display. It’s ideal for people who do color work, such as 3D modeling, painting, and photo editing. But it’s exclusive to the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation).

12.9‑inch iPad Pro can now display reference color.

If you’re not too concerned with Stage Manager or the M1 chip, and just want to know which iPad models get iPadOS 16 this fall, here is a breakdown. At the time of this writing, iPadOS 16 is compatible with the following devices:

  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (5th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

Check the Settings menu using the steps mentioned above to see which iPad you own.

Apple’s OS public betas are currently live, and enrolling your device is a cinch. These updates feature excellent improvements, but if you’re a newbie, or don’t have an extra device that can load up the betas, wait for the stable versions of these OSes, which arrive this fall.

NRL 2022 Tigers Sharks | Niche Hynes makes passionate plea after big win

Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes has made a passionate plea to the wider NRL community to do more to support mates after the death of former player Paul Green.

Green played 95 matches for the Sharks across the NRL and Super League between 1994-1998.

“Can I just give a quick shoutout to Paul Green’s family, all of us here at the Sharks are thinking of you – he was an important part of this club, I just want to pay my respects, send our condolences to you guys, we ‘re thinking of you,” Hynes said in his post-match interview with Fox Sports.

“RU OK Day is every year, it’s coming up soon – but I think we need an RU OK day every single day of the year.

“We need to think about it a bit more, and spread the message of mental health – it’s such an important thing at the moment.”

Tigers captain James Tamou was in Green’s premiership-winning Cowboys side. He said the Tigers had gone out of their way to check in on him.

“It’s been quite a weight, with what’s happened – but Noddy (Tigers coach Brett Kimmorley), the boys, the Tigers organisation, they’ve made sure I was alright,” he said.

“It’s just sad, a sad time. It’s awful. The coaches came together and we had a conversation about it, that took a bit of weight off but it’s just a scary thing to think about – when someone can be so high on life with everything going, everything they’ve achieved, and family, and still be fighting some demons.

“It’s just a scary thing and I know the NRL are taking the right steps to make sure people can seek help.”

A suspected knee injury to prop Toby Rudolf and a sin-binning for Teig Wilton were the only sour notes in an otherwise stellar Cronulla performance in Tamworth, which saw them run out 36-12 winners.

Wilton was sent to the sin bin for a late hit on Tigers fullback Daine Laurie with just over ten minutes left in the game.

Laurie had just offloaded the Steeden and was backing towards Wilton when the contact happened. Referee Ben Cummins initially let play go, before the Bunker called it back, leading to the binning.

The decision irked great Steve Roach.

“This sort of tackle you can’t pull out of,” Roach said in commentary for Fox Sports.

“I don’t think it’s a penalty. He’s turned around to offload the ball – what do you want him to do? Honestly.

“I tell you what if you saw that in normal motion without slowing it down… how is he going to pull out of that?”

The Sharks flew out of the blocks early, scoring their opening try in just the fifth minute when Nicho Hynes – with a defender basically on his back – put a beautiful kick through the Tigers line to Lachie Miller.

The lead was 12-0 when Matt Ikuvalu scored in the ninth, before Fa’amanu Brown gave the Tamworth crowd some hope of a contest when he got the Tigers on the board in the 13th minute.

Tries to Royce Hunt, and Kade Dykes, as well as a penalty goal to Hynes – who’s boot was on fire – saw the Sharks carry a 26-6 lead into half time.

The reason for the penalty goal may attract Tyrone Peachey some attention from the match review committee, when he made a half-attempt to tackle Sharks second-rower Briton Nikora. His hand basically slapped across Nikora’s face, but was only penalized.

It was all Sharks early in the second half, but it took them more than ten minutes to crack the Tigers defence.

But, the Tigers hit straight back with Luke Garner crossing two minutes later.

It was as good as it got for the Tigers. Jesse Ramien scored in the 61st minute to extend the lead to 24 points, although they did have a consolation try disallowed by the bunker for an obstruction call in the 69th minute.

‘It’s mildly embarrassing to have been married [and divorced] twice’

I had a girlfriend in the US whom I met on one of my overseas trips, but that didn’t last. I also had a passionate relationship in my final year with someone who wasn’t in my class. But I didn’t blossom into a proper relationship until I was 21 or 22. After I graduated I felt more confident sexually, and had more mature relationships.

I came to Australia when I was 25 to continue my pediatrics training. In 1982, I became a health reporter for the ABC, and then, when I was the general manager of Radio National, I employed Geraldine Doogue, who is one of my closest friends. She does n’t change her desire for her when she’s on air, which is her greatest strength for her.

I met my first wife, Lee Sutton, a fellow pediatrician, over an incubator in a premature baby unit at what was then called the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney. She was straight and honest and we shared similar interests. I recognized she would make an incredible mother, which she has been to our children Anna, Georgia and Jonathan.

It’s mildly embarrassing to have been married [and divorced] twice. I’ve heard men complain about the women in their lives as the reason they’ve been married more than once, when 50 per cent or more of the reason is us, the men.

In my latest book, So You Want to Live Younger Longer?, I write about the stigma of aging for women. I think men feel it, too. I’m not critical of plastic surgery or of people with money who want to tinker with their looks, but I do think as a community we are much less kind to women in terms of looks and how they age.

Both my grandmothers took huge care over the way they looked until the day they died. Yet when I talk to women about this, they say they actually do it for other women. It’s the same with clothes and make-up. They’ve not the slightest interest in what men think about them. It’s what other women think of them; that is whom they dress for.

So You Want to Live Younger Longer? (Hachette) by Dr Norman Swan is out now.

Cult of the Lamb beginner’s guide: 14 tips and tricks

Cult of the Lamb might be the strangest game of 2022. This wild mashup of life sim and roguelike tasks you with running a thriving cult — gathering materials, building structures, and slaying anyone that gets in your way. Since Cult of the Lamb borrows so many ideas from so many genres, it can be difficult to come to grips with everything it asks of you. However, with a few tips and tricks, you’ll be running the most successful cult the world has ever seen.

Here are some beginner tips and tricks for Cult of the Lamb.

further reading

Master your combat skills

A boss shoots fireballs in every direction in Cult of the Lamb.

Fight in Cult of the Lamb is fast-paced and unforgiving. Several skills are at your disposal, and learning the intricacies of each is the key to staying alive. More importantly, you’ll want to master your dodge roll. This lets you quickly evade incoming attacks and put distance between you and your enemies. It can also be used to close gaps, as you move surprisingly fast while rolling. Also keep in mind that touching most enemies won’t damage you — only active attacks will deplete your HP. This means you shouldn’t be afraid to get close, deal some damage, then roll away to safety.

Use each weapon properly

A roguelike is only as good as the weapons at your disposal, and Cult of the Lamb will throw no shortage of sharp, pointy objects your way. Some are slow and deal heaps of damage, while others are fast and designed to slowly chip away at enemy health bars. You won’t always be able to bring your favorite weapon into combat (thanks to the random nature of the game), so make sure you change up your playstyle based on your gear. Heavy weapons, for example, might only let you land a single attack before needing to roll away to safety, while fast weapons will let you hack away endlessly.

Food is king (and so is your Farm)

The cooking menu in Cult of the Lamb.

If your cult starts getting hungry, bad things start happening. Picking berries and cooking food should be a daily task, and try to establish a Farm as soon as possible. This gives you easy access to cooking ingredients and makes it easy to keep your cultists fed. You’ll also want to forage for berries as you venture out into the wild.

Don’t worry, you can move your buildings

The game doesn’t tell you this right off the bat, but don’t fret about where you place your initial structures. Most of these are entirely customizable and can be moved without penalty later in the game. Simply head over to the Building Sign and select the Edit Buildings option. This will let you move around your structures as you see fit.

Progress is tied to the size of your cult

Animals live in a village together in Cult of the Lamb.

While you’ll have a bunch of goals to accomplish listed on the right side of your screen, much of your progress is truly tied to growing your cult. This means you’ll want to do everything in your power to free prisoners and indoctrinate them — allowing your weird little family to grow larger and letting you unlock new areas of the game.

Time of day is important

Cult of the Lamb uses a Day/Night cycle that is continuously running. Whether you’re chopping trees with your fellow cultists or out on an adventure, time will slowly tick by. Keeping track of time is important, as some activities can only be performed once before getting locked behind a timer.

Give daily Sermons

A group of animals praise a lamb in Cult of the Lamb.

Speaking of time-gated activities, you’ll want to give Sermons as often as possible. This is essentially how you level up in Cult of the Lamb, growing more powerful based on your number of followers and how loyal they are to the cult. Your best bet is to give a Sermon early in the morning, then head out for an adventure. Only one Sermon can be performed a day, so make sure you don’t miss out on this easy way to level up.

Keep everyone healthy

Your followers can get sick and die if you’re not careful. To avoid this, be sure to not only keep them fed but also dispose of any bodies, poop, or other hazardous materials. The easiest way to do this is to take a quick lap around your camp every day, scouting for anything unsavory that might be scattered on the ground.

Keep everyone loyal

Giving cultists gifts and completing quests for them will increase their loyalty toward you. Increase their loyalty enough, and you’ll be rewarded with Devotion and a Commandment Stone Fragment. They’ll also produce more Devotion during Sermons. It can be easy to overlook your followers when you’re busy questing and unlocking structures, but gaining their loyalty is an easy way to quickly grow stronger.

Bones are priceless

Cult of the Lamb player performing a ritual.

Bones are ridiculously useful in Cult of the Lamb. These resources are required to perform Rituals and increase the faith of your cultists. Early in the game, it’s a good idea to stockpile these, as you’ll unlock some really costly rituals later in the game.

Destroy everything in sight

When you’re out on a quest, it’s in your best interest to destroy absolutely everything you see. Various resources can often be gathered from random plants and other objects on the map, and cutting down everything you see before moving to the next room will ensure your inventory is fully loaded when you return to camp.

Play Knucklebones

Early in your adventures, you’ll unlock a dice game called Knucklebones. Not only is it incredibly fun (and easy to learn) but you can earn new Tarot cards (used to grant temporary perks) for your journey by playing. Most of them are nothing too game-changing, although Knucklebones is a fun diversion from the harsh realities of running a cult.

Level fast with Worshipers

Instead of having your followers cut down trees or mine stone, you can have them worship at your Shrine. This is where you’ll unlock new upgrades for your cult, such as a Lumberyard, Farm, Missionary, and more. Unless you’re running very low on resources, it’s a good idea to have as many cultists worshiping at the Shrine as possible. This lets you quickly unlock new parts of your camp and progress through the game with ease.

Develop a routine

Attacking enemies in a dungeon in Cult of the Lamb.

Cult of the Lamb has so many moving pieces that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. To combat this, try to develop a schedule that you follow each day. Here’s a simple example that you can modify as needed:

  • Once all your cultists are awake, head to your Temple for a Sermon or other Rituals.
  • Make a sweep of your camp, checking for hazardous materials that could get your crew sick.
  • Collect any resources around your camp.
  • Head out on a quest, gathering materials as you go.
  • Return to camp and indoctrinate any followers.
  • Check your camp stats (such as Hunger) and improve these as needed.
  • Chat with followers.
  • Wrap up with any tasks you missed throughout the day.

This routine will constantly require minor adjustments as you unlock new features (or automate them, thanks to your loyal followers), but it’s a good starting point for beginners.

‘Apex Legends’ Season 14 has snuck in a ‘Titanfall 2’ cameo

apex legends‘ recent Season 14 update appears to have a sly reference to another Respawn Entertainment game, titan fall 2.

Whilst likely nothing major, it’s interesting to see as the new lobby in apex legends has a silhouetted figure in the background, which Twitter user KralRindo managed to find, showing off in the video below (via The Loadout).

This may seem unassuming at first, but another user by the name of ApexLmgLover pointed out that it’s the model of an IMC scientist from the titan fall 2 mission Effect and Cause, which sees the player time traveling between the past and present in an effort to get through the level.

Ace apex legends and titan fall are set in the same universe, with Apex taking place in the near future, the two franchises are closely connected. That said, it’s absolutely possible that this could be nothing of significance, and instead an effective use of assets from one game to another. But it does raise some potential questions about the specific use of the asset.

This isn’t the only recent news tying Respawn’s battle royale game to its titan fall franchise, as back in July it was revealed that the developer is looking to make a single-player apex legends game – with previous game titan fall 2 having a campaign as well.

The jobs listings describe the title as an “FPS Incubation” title and a “new single-player title [that] is a developer’s dream playground,” with another adding: “Our critically acclaimed, multi-platform games have always established a “fun comes first.”

“Sensibility created with the notion that great ideas can come from anyone, which allows creativity to shine and individuals to shape the game in meaningful ways.”

In other news, Humble Bundle is offering a collection of 12 different resident Evil games with a minimum donation of nearly £30, with proceeds going to Ukraine relief.
