AFL 2022: Makeup-free Nadia Bartel steps out in activewear in Melbourne

Nadia Bartel put on a brave face on Monday as she stepped out in Melbourne a week after being accused of pretending to have flaws in a bid to ‘stay relevant’.

The former WAG-turned-fashion designer went makeup free and donned all-black activewear while running errands near her multimillion-dollar home.

The mother of two, 37, wore a $150 fleece and $110 leggings from her label Henne.

She carried her belongings in a black handbag and added a pair of casual sneakers.

Nadia sported a deep golden tan, and wore her long brunette hair loosely.

The ex-wife of retired Geelong star Jimmy Bartel appeared a little distracted as she glanced nervously at her iPhone.

Nadia was last week forced to defend herself after trolls criticized her for posting a photo of her ‘mummy tummy’ on Instagram.

She raised eyebrows after she shared a video of her smooth midsection, which she followed up with a ‘realistic’ photo of her stomach skin bunching up as she sat down.

‘My tum today that has carried two boys. Don’t forget that you always see the angles that people want you to see online so be kind to yourself,’ she captioned the post.

Unfortunately, Nadia’s empowering message fell flat, with some followers accusing her of overstating her ‘flaws’ in order to seem more relatable.

She returned to Instagram last Monday to defend herself against the naysayers.

‘I’ve had a lot of comments and messages… mostly a lot of them positive, but quite a few of them thinking I’m just posting that to try to stay relevant, and that I’m not sending the right message posting it,’ she said in a video recorded in her car.

‘I didn’t think about it too much, to be honest. It was basically just that I get a lot of messages from people thinking I look really fit and my stomach is really toned and flat, but the reality is that it’s just the same as most other mums out there.’

‘Once you have a few babies, you have loose skin on your stomach. It doesn’t matter how much you work out’, Nadia added.

She reminded fans that not everything they see on social media is reality.

‘We’re always posting our best angles and that’s just human nature… you want to show yourself looking your best,’ she said.

‘But if you actually saw most of these people that you follow online every single day, you’ll see that they don’t look perfect.

‘And everyone is going through the same s**t, basically.’

Nadia insisted that even the most famous Instagram models have insecurities about how they look – including herself.

She concluded by sharing an uplifting message about body positivity.

‘Just know that you’re doing the best thing for yourself, for your situation, for your family. You’re setting up a really beautiful, positive body image, and you just know that every single day you’re doing little steps to make yourself happy,’ she said.

Republicans look for escape hatch amid controversy on veterans bill

Senate Republicans are looking for a way to quietly end a standoff over legislation to help veterans suffering from toxic exposure that has turned into a major distraction and put them on the defensive at a critical moment.

Activists representing veterans are enraged after GOP lawmakers blocked a $278 billion bill aimed at helping veterans suffering from health ailments because of their exposure to toxins. They’ve been staging a sit-in protest on the Capitol steps since Thursday to draw attention to the Republican opposition.

The legislation initially passed the Senate in June by a lopsided 84-14 vote, and Republican senators are struggling to explain why they’re now holding up the same bill on the Senate floor.

Jon Stewart, the former “Daily Show” host who for years has acted as an activist for veterans and first responder groups, has relentlessly pummeled the GOP over its stance, drawing a barrage of media attention to the issue.

Stewart took delight in pillorying conservative Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in a recent video in which he responded to Cruz’s objections to the bill point by point. He characterized Cruz’s arguments as “inaccurate, not true, bullshit” and concluded the video with footage of Cruz fist-bumping a colleague after the legislation failed on the floor last Thursday.

Republicans concede the standoff is not a good look for them three months before a crucial election and that they’re taking most of the blame for the stalled bill.

Asked if Republicans are getting blamed, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a combat veteran, replied: “Yeah, and it’s unfair.”

Now Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), are predicting the bill will pass this week, even if they can’t amend it, signaling they’re ready to move on from the politically damaging fight.

GOP senators insist they support the substance of the bill, but are objecting to what they say is an accounting gimmick that will likely add to future budget deficits.

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), whose home state has one of the highest numbers of veterans per 100,000 residents, said strong Republican support for the bill was demonstrated by the bipartisan vote to pass it in June.

“I want to see the PACT Act pass,” Daines said referring to the Honoring Our Pact Act.

He said that he and other Republicans agreed to support Sen. Pat Toomey’s (R-Pa.) objection to the bill because “Sen. Toomey raised a legitimate question about how the funding works.”

Toomey, a leading Republican voice on fiscal issues, says the bill designates the $400 billion the Department of Veterans Affairs is slated to spend over the next decade to help veterans exposed to toxins as mandatory spending. Traditionally, this spending is classified as discretionary, which means it needs to fit under annual discretionary spending caps.

Toomey, who is not up for reelection this year because he is retiring from the Senate, argues that converting to the mandatory side of the ledger will give Congress flexibility to fit other spending programs under the annual budget caps.

“Here’s the problem with this bill, here’s the budgetary gimmick, this is what’s outrageous,” Toomey said on the floor recently. “It enables that spending to be shifted from the discretionary category to the mandatory category of spending.

“By moving this big category of spending, this $400 billion, out of the discretionary category and putting it into mandatory, you create this big hole under the [budget] chap,” he added. “Guess what happens with that big hole? It gets filled with spending on who knows what.”

The problem for Senate Republicans, however, is that it’s not easy to explain to the American public why this is a deal-breaker.

It’s complicated by the fact that 34 Republicans voted for the bill six weeks ago, even though that version of the bill also designated the new veterans funding as mandatory spending.

Stewart in the video responding to Cruz and other Senate GOP critics declared: “There was no budgetary trick and it was always mandatory and when they voted in the Senate June 16, they actually got 84 votes.”

Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough warned in a CNN interview over the weekend that Toomey’s amendment could lead to the “rationing of care for vets” because it would place “a year-on-year cap” on what his department can spend to help veterans suffering from exposure to burn pits.

Republicans have also come under criticism from Democrats over their motivation for blocking the bill.

Several Democrats view it as retaliation for a separate deal worked out last week by Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) and Sen. Joe Manchin (DW.Va.). That budget reconciliation package is a top priority for Democrats and is being moved under special budget rules that prevent a GOP filibuster.

After 25 Republicans who had previously voted “yes” for the veterans bill voted “no” on a measure to advance it last week, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (DN.Y.) accused them of “holding our service members hostage for the sake of politics.”

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) accused them of plotting revenge after learning of the Schumer-Manchin deal on climate and taxes.

“Republicans are mad that Democrats are on the verge of passing climate change legislation and have decided to take their anger out on vulnerable veterans,” he told Vox.com.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who has led the floor debate, said it’s “a very bad decision by the Republicans.”

Democratic aides say Schumer offered Toomey a vote on an amendment related to the mandatory spending designation six weeks ago, but 34 Republicans still voted for the bill even though that amendment vote never happened.

In other words, even many of Toomey’s GOP colleagues weren’t prepared to block the popular bill over arcane debate over mandatory and discretionary spending earlier this summer. That changed when Democrats announced a breakthrough deal on climate and taxes.

But now Republicans are being forced to play defense and offer complicated explanations about why they’re holding up the veterans bill.

They would prefer to go on the offense and attack Democrats for raising taxes and fueling inflation with the climate and tax bill they intend to pass later this week.

Republicans backed Toomey last week but are ready to end the standoff soon.

“Some of our members are like, ‘Toomey’s talking about this for several weeks in our conference meetings, let’s try and fix this.’ He’s got a legitimate issue but clearly at some point this is going to pass and it’s going to pass big,” said Senate Republican Whip John Thune (SD).

Discord updates Android app to roll out new features along with iOS

Discord’s product team has updated the blog post to announce that the company has revamped its Android app. The new update will help Android users to receive new features at the same time as iOS and desktop. Previously, DiscordAndroid users get new features months after they were announced on iOS. According to a report by The Verge, the recently released Server Profiles feature was also available for iOS users a long time before it arrived for Android users.
The blog post explains that earlier work on Android implementation of new features was usually delayed before its desktop and iOS rollout was completed. This resulted in some features to release first on one platform before eventually arriving on another one. However, this new update is expected to stop showing users “coming soon to Android” messages for future Discord features, the report claims.
New Discord Android app availability
Discord has started rolling out the latest Android app update. Users will be able to see the changes in the underlying codebase over the coming weeks. Discord has decided to switch to ReactNative for its Android app.

What is React Native and how will it help users
React Native is an open-source UI software framework created by Goal which can be used to develop apps for multiple platforms. As per the report, React Native is widely used across multiple popular mobile apps, including — InstagramMicrosoft Outlook, Shopify, Tesla and Pinterest among others. Discord started using this framework for its iOS app since Meta open-sourced it in 2015, the report mentions. The report also claims that
This switch will allow the company to release new features across every platform, simultaneously. Moreover, the design of Discord on Android will look more like the one found in the desktop or the iOS versions, the report suggests. The Discord Android app will retain some specific customizations, however, designs and font size will be aligned with the iOS app.

Discord has explained that React Native has allowed the company to “streamline and consolidate” its processes, which has helped its engineers to “work more efficiently and push out updates more frequently.” Now, the team won’t need to spend much time maintaining “different codebases for different devices” the report states.

Jon Stewart gives fiery speech on Capitol steps ahead of second vote on burn pits bill

Jon Stewart has called on the US Senate to remain in session for as long as it takes to pass burn pits legislation in an impassioned speech on the steps of the US Capitol this week.

The comedian and activist turned up the heat on Republicans ahead of a second vote on The PACT Act, which provides healthcare for veterans exposed to burn pits, on Monday night.

Speaking to a group of veterans who have been camped out for days in Washington DC, Stewart said the Senators shouldn’t be allowed to leave the building until the bill had passed.

“My suggestion to this Senate would be when you come back, if all the members aren’t here, keep the lights on, keep the doors open, and don’t leave here tonight until you do the right thing by these folks.”

The host of The Problem with Jon Stewart has been on a media blitz in recent days, appearing on all of the cable news channels and filming viral social media videos attacking the Republican senators who blocked passage of the bill last week by name.

Stewart has himself become a target. Senator Pat Toomey recently called him a “pseudo celebrity” on CNN’s State of the Nation and Fox News host Jesse Watters suggested he should stick to farming.

In his speech on Monday, Stewart joked that the right was trying to smear him as “Hunter Biden’s cocaine dealer” and “more gay pride flag than man”.

(Twitter/Reuben Jones)

“You can attack me all you want. And you can troll me online…. but here’s the beautiful thing, I don’t give as**t. I’m not scared of you. And I don’t care,” he said, before gesturing to the veterans standing behind him. “Because these are the people that I owe a debt of gratitude to, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to. And it’s about time we start paying it off.”

The PACT Act easily passed the Senate by 84 votes to 14 in June, but was voted down last week after some changes were made to the legislation in the House.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz accused Mr Stewart of misrepresenting the bill, saying that Democrats were attempting a “budgetary trick” of including $400bn in spending unrelated to veterans.

“What Ted Cruz is describing is inaccurate, not true, bulls***t”, Stewart said in a video posted on Twitter, mocking Mr Cruz for saying that the Democrats put “discretionary” funds in the legislation that they made “mandatory” .

Footage of Mr Cruz fist-bumping Montana Senator Steve Daines on the Senate floor after the bill was blocked provoked outrage, and was seized on as proof the Republicans were playing politics with veterans’ lives.

‘Destiny 2’ text chat disabled due to game-crashing PvP exploit

Bungie has announced that text chat in destiny 2 has been “temporarily disabled,” after an exploit that allowed players to crash their opponent’s game in a player versus player (PvP) match was discovered.

On Saturday (June 30), Bungie announced that it was “investigating” an issue involving text chat in destiny 2 (via pc gamer).

Just over 10 minutes later, the company added that it has “temporarily disabled text chat on all platforms in destiny 2 while we investigate an issue causing Weasel errors.”

As detailed on a thread within destiny 2‘s subreddit, players shared that the exploit in question involved overloading the text chat’s character limit by pasting a certain message, which resulted in the game crashing.

Unfortunately, some members of the destiny 2 community were using this bug to disconnect their opponent from the servers in PvP matches – which meant that the cheater was automatically awarded a win.

The replies to Bungie’s announcement include several clips demonstrating the exploit in action, which includes one video of a player appearing to use the exploit while streaming.

While it’s unclear how Bungie will punish those responsible for exploiting the chat issue, in recent months the company has taken cheating and harassment particularly seriously.

In July, Bungie sued a Twitch streamer known as MiffysWorld for routinely streaming themselves using cheats in destiny 2, and alleged they used over 13 accounts to evade permanent punishment. The streamer was also reportedly involved in selling “presumably stolen” social media accounts, and separately threatened to “burn down” Bungie’s offices.

Back in June, Bungie won £10.7million in damages from Elite Boss Tech, a company that sold cheating software for destiny 2. The damages were so expensive because every download of Elite Boss Tech’s cheats was counted as an individual infringement, which incurred a £1588 fine for every single one of the cheat’s 6765 downloads.

In other gaming news, the Indonesian government has shared that Steam may “reopen” in the country soon, after new regulations caused most major game launchers to be blocked in the country.

Antiques Roadshow guest stunned after she learns truth about ring

A guest on Antiques Roadshow was left stunned after the ring which she described as an “ugly lump of glass” was given a whopping evaluation by the show’s jewelery expert.

Valuer on the UK TV show Susan Rumfitt revealed a guest’s Art Deco cocktail ring with a yellow sapphire was worth almost $9000.

The guest explained the ring had belonged to a relative of her mother’s who lived in Philadelphia in the US, The Sun reports.

“When she died, her jewelery was sent to my mum, which included rings and brooches,” she said.

She confessed she thought the ring was “an ugly lump of glass” and “a bit too much” for her.

Rumfitt replied: “That’s a shame, it’s a gorgeous color though, it’s a really pretty colour.

“And if it is glass, it’s definitely a nice piece of glass.”

But then the guest was shocked to discover the jewel was in fact a huge yellow sapphire.

“I can understand why you thought it might have been a citrine as you do get that range of yellows from that light, very punchy yellows,” Rumfitt said.

She said the sapphire was about 16 carats, leaving the guest open-mouthed.

“It’s certainly brightened up my day, and if it went into auction you would be looking at an estimate of between £4000 and £5000 ($A7000 to $A8700),” Rumfitt said.

“You’re kidding me,” the guest replied. “That’s ridiculous.”

White House Slams Russia for ‘Bad Faith’ Counteroffer

Despite reporting of a potential prisoner exchange to bring home Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, a deal between the United States and Russia to free the detained Americans still appears to be a ways away.

A top White House official slammed Russia in a CNN interview Saturday for attempting to tack on an additional convict — a murderer who was tried, sentenced, and imprisoned in Germany — to the United States’ proposed prisoner exchange of Griner and Whelan for notorious arms dealer Victor Bout.

John Kirby, the Biden administration’s National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, called the Kremlin’s counteroffer “a bad faith attempt to avoid a very serious offer and proposal that the United States has put forward.”

“Holding two American citizens hostage in exchange for an assassin in a third-party country is not a serious counteroffer,” Kirby said, adding: “We urge Russia to take [our] offer seriously.”

Even despite his criticism of Moscow’s counter, Kirby was hesitant to agree that discussions between the two superpowers had “stalled.” He also denied that the Russians “hold the cards,” as CNN’s Jim Sciutto phrased his question about him, at the negotiating table.

John Kirby.

Instead, Kirby underscored the Biden administration’s stance since early May, when they designated Griner as “wrongfully detained.” A source previously told Insider that the classification change sends a “strong signal that the US government does not believe that there is a legitimate case against her.”

“We very much want to see Brittney and Paul come home to their families, where they belong,” Kirby said. “They’re wrongfully detained there, and we’re just gonna keep at that work.”

Griner, an eight-time WNBA All-Star, has been in Russian custody since February 17. The 6-foot-9 Phoenix Mercury center was charged with the large-scale transportation of drugs and moved to a Russian jail shortly after customs agents at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport claimed to have found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage.

Whelan, meanwhile, has been wrongfully detained in Russia since December 2018. The former Marine-turned-security executive was arrested at a Moscow hotel over suspicions that he was an American spy. He was subsequently convicted of espionage and sentenced to 16 years in Russian prison, with the possibility of serving time at a labor camp.

Though Griner’s trial — which legal experts characterize as a “show trial” with a “predetermined” outcome — is still underway, sources have repeatedly told Insider that a prisoner exchange is Griner’s most likely path home. The same goes for Whelan.

The US government’s offer to release Bout is a serious one. Known to many as the “Merchant of Death,” the 55-year-old is infamous for supplying rebel groups and terrorist organizations with weapons that fueled bloody wars across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

However, Bout’s 2008 arrest in Thailand was not actually based on charges for the high-stakes trafficking operations that have since served as inspiration for several movies, documentaries, and books. Instead, he has been in foreign custody for over a decade after he was caught in a US Drug Enforcement Agency sting operation.

American officials lured the elusive arms distributor to engage with purported representatives of a Colombian guerilla group. He offered to sell weapons to the rebels, even with the understanding that the materials could have been used to kill Americans.

Soon after, Bout was arrested in Bangkok and, following an extended legal battle and protests from the Russian government, extradited to the US. Nearly four years after his initial capture of him, Bout was convicted of a trio of crimes and handed his minimum 25-year sentence.

Expert opinions vary on whether the weapons dealer would still pose a national security threat to the United States if he were set free. And even though Bout has already served 11 years of his sentence, many see his release of him as a major concession from the US government.

Adding another dangerous criminal — Vadim Krasikov, who was convicted late last year of killing a man in broad daylight — would make the deal even less palatable to those concerned about the initial trade proposed by the Biden administration.

Griner’s Russian legal representation previously estimated that she’d be sentenced sometime in August. The 31-year-old is expected to appear in court again this week.

‘Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series’ Is A Faithful But Basic Retro Tribute

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile on the original PlayStation was one of those strange games that I experienced exclusively through a coveted PS1 demo disc. Whether it was PlayStation Underground or Official PlayStation Magazine, I can’t particularly remember, but here’s what I do know: I absolutely loved running through the 2.5D platformer’s bright and colorful first level over and over, relishing the excellent soundtrack and charming visuals. It was like Crystal Dynamics Pandemonium!only starring a bunny cat…thing?

You’d figure such a positive impression would have led me to acquire the full game at some point, but no, this (sadly) never happened. Considering the complete game’s astronomical Ebay value at this point, you can probably understand my ongoing regret.

Gamers from that era can relate to this sort of problem, I’m sure. We all had those select games we worshiped via demo discs, though something kept us from taking the MSRP retail plunge. Do young gamers today even know what demo discs are? I feel so ancient. Excuse me while I go cough dust.

I suppose my ’90s stories don’t matter much at this point, because Bandai Namco has benevolently released Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Seriesa heartfelt — though terribly named and somewhat barebones — remastered compilation of the first two Klonoa games. This includes the aforementioned Door to Phantomile as well as Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil, the cel-shaded PS2-relegated sequel. The latter isn’t cel-shaded anymore, but we’ll get to that.

As far as I can tell, the remastered Door to Phantomile is based on the 2008/2009 Nintendo Wii version, which itself was a remake of the original PS1. So in essence, the new 2022 Door to Phantomile is a remaster of a remake, which totally isn’t confusing at all. On the other hand, the included sequel game is a remake-ish remaster, I suppose, since it’s also based on its corresponding original PS2 version but adds some changes.

Basically, if you haven’t played any of the Klonoa games, they’re arguably great platformers with an interesting surrealist style. Between the two of them, they’ve occupied a somewhat niche corner of Namco’s storied library, and I still don’t think a whole lot of people have played these games. Probably more gamers experienced the Wii remake, so it’s nice that we’re getting a pair of largely ignored classics in one modern, accessible, updated collection.

On that note, the updated graphics do look excellent, minus some egregious blooming effects here and there. I’ll always prefer the rudimentary sprite-heavy visuals of the PS1 release, but what’s here is nicely and lovingly brought into the current generation. If you go in expecting graphical powerhouses, you’ll surely be disappointed, but Klonoa has never really been about pushing hardware. The draw is in the art, the environments, and the cute appealing nature of our anthropomorphic hero’s entire world.

It does seem that Bandai Namco has altered the look of Klonoa 2, stripping the game of its charming cel-shading in favor of a more homogenized display. This bummed me out, because I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for cel-shading, and I blame Jet Set Radio for that. At least the music from the first game appears to be in-tact from the PS1 release, though I can’t be certain for the sequel, since I didn’t play that title nearly as much.

The last thing I’ll mention is that I was definitely expecting a little bit more in terms of franchise history with Phantasy Reverie Series. I’m thinking in terms of stuff like design documents, interviews, anything to ‘plus’ a retro compilation like this. Many of the recent throwback collections (say, from Capcom) have dabbled in such extras and I think it goes a long way in making a re-release like this more special. It should also be noted that none of the other Klonoa games, like from the Game Boy Advance, made the cut.

It looks like a digital artbook is included in the special edition, but I’d have preferred some kind of Klonoa museum feature in-game. I mean, Namco is no stranger to awesome PS1 museum compilations, so I feel a bit let down.

That said, the Klonoa games are beautiful, fun, (mostly) hidden gems and I’m hoping that enough interest shows up for this new collection that Bandai Namco seriously considers making Klonoa 3. In the meantime, I’ll be listening to the amazing Windmill Song on the first level of Door to Phantomile over and over, just like I did all those years ago.

But if you haven’t played these games yet, do yourself a favor and give them a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Disclosure: Bandai Namco provided a review code for coverage purposes.

Prince Charlotte watches swimming with William, Kate at Commonwealth Games 2022 | photos

Princess Charlotte was all smiles as she watched the Commonwealth Games with her mum and dad.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took Charlotte, seven, to see the swimming at the Sandwell Aquatics Center in Birmingham, The Sun reports.

William and Kate arrived on Tuesday shortly after the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children, Lady Louise and James.

Before the duke and duchess’s arrival, Edward, who is vice patron of the Commonwealth Games, shared a joke with former prime minister Theresa May as he entered during the men’s 1500m freestyle heats.

The duke and duchess arrived shortly after with Princess Charlotte, dressed in a striped dress and her hair done up in pigtails.

Kate, dressed in a white blazer and trousers, embraced Edward, Sophie and their children before taking her seat next to Charlotte.

The duchess was pointing and explaining things to her daughter, while William held one of the official programs.

The royals were cheering and applauding alongside the crowd for England 1500m freestyle hopeful Luke Turley.

After rolling her eyes following a comment from her father, Charlotte then cracked a smile as Turley’s heat came to close.

It’s been a very sporty week for Charlotte, who also roared her support for the England Lionesses alongside Prince William ahead of Sunday’s Euro final.

She beamed as she wished the team good luck as they prepared to take on Germany at Wembley.

Wearing a short-sleeved polka dot top, Charlotte said: “Good luck, I hope you win. Bye.”

Charlotte is currently on her school summer holidays from her $34,000-a-year Thomas’s Battersea school.

This summer may also be particularly busy for the family who are reportedly preparing to move to a house on the Queen’s Windsor estate.
