Australia’s military structure, preparedness and investments to be reviewed for the first time in a decade

A former Labor Defense Minister and a Chief of Defense who served under him will conduct a strategic review of Australia’s military for the first time in a decade, with recommendations to be made within five months.

The Albanese government has announced Stephen Smith, who was Defense Minister between 2010 and 2013, will join retired Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston in overseeing the comprehensive study of the ADF’s structure, preparedness and investments.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the review will ensure the Australian Defense Force (ADF) is “well positioned to meet the nation’s security challenges over the next decade and beyond”.

“Professor Smith and Sir Angus bring a unique blend of knowledge and experience to their role as independent leads,” Mr Albanese said.

“Their depth of expertise will be invaluable in informing the review.”

Defense Minister Richard Marles said the Morrison government’s Defense Strategic Update of 2020 found changes in Australia’s strategic environment were accelerating more rapidly than predicted in the last Force Posture Review in 2012.

“This necessitates an immediate analysis of where and how Defense assets and personnel are best positioned to protect Australia and its national interests,” Mr Marles said.

“It also requires an assessment of Defense’s force structure and Integrated Investment Program.

“Exploring how our capabilities can better integrate and operate with the United States, the United Kingdom and other key partners will also be an important element of the review.”

Inside ADF ranks Stephen Smith’s appointment to lead the Defense Strategic Review is considered controversial given cuts to military spending and project cancellations which occurred when he was Minister.

Air Marshal Sir Angus Houston served as Chief of Defense between 2005 and 2011, and was knighted in 2015 for extraordinary service to Australia, particularly for his role in the aftermath of the MH370 and MH17 disasters.

Stephen Smith (left) and Sir Angus Houston will oversee the review.

According to the Terms of Reference released by the government, the review will be completed for National Security Committee of Cabinet consideration “no later than March 2023”.

It states that the latest review is needed because “military modernisation, technological disruption and the risk of state-on-state conflict are complicating Australia’s strategic circumstances.”

“The review is to be a holistic consideration of Australia’s Defense Force structure and posture by including force disposition, preparedness, strategy and associated investments, including all elements of Defense’s Integrated Investment Program,” it said.

Earlier this year Labor matched the former government’s pledge to increase the number of uniformed personnel to almost 80,000 by 2040, amid strategic risks posed by China and Russia.

LANSING, Mich. — Tudor Dixon has won the Michigan Republican primary for governor, according to The Associated Press.

Friday, Dixon received a late endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Previously, she also racked up endorsements from well-known names in Michigan politics, like the family of former US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

Dixon is fervently against abortion rights and made recent headlines after responding to a question about the hypothetical rape of a 14-year-old by a family member being a “perfect example” of why abortion should be banned.

Before that, Dixon had made schools and education central issues for her campaign. She has also heavily criticized incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s early COVID-19-pandemic lockdown policies.

Lately, Dixon has seen attacks directed at her from both sides of the aisle. Her Republican challengers of her had pushed back on her support of her from the DeVos family and other political insiders. Meanwhile, the Democratic Governors Association has also run attack ads against Dixon, with a recent $2 million campaign against her.

Dixon is a businesswoman and a former conservative media host and will go on to face incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a well-funded Democrat.

‘Overwatch 2’ skin survey prices were “randomised” and not final

After an online survey showing some potentially pricey cosmetics for Overwatch 2 made the rounds, Activision Blizzard has said that it wasn’t indicative of the launch price for cosmetics.

Last week a tweet showing an Overwatch survey made the rounds, as it asked a player how likely they were to spend certain amounts of money on a variety of character skin rarities. Mythic skins were priced at $44.99 on the survey (around £36), Legendary skins at $24.99 (£20), and weapon charms at $9.99 (£8).

While these were not promised cosmetic prices for Overwatch 2players were concerned that this was how much could be charged for skins when the game launches in October.

Now, a spokesperson has responded to PCGamesNclaiming that those prices aren’t indicative of the final cosmetic pricing in Overwatch 2.

“This survey is entirely intended to better understand player preferences for different types of Overwatch 2 cosmetics,” they wrote. “Prices displayed in the survey were randomized per user and are not indicative of final pricing. We plan to share details on our shop and battle pass system closer to our October 4 launch.”

So this means players should expect a breakdown of some kind concerning Overwatch two‘s monetization over the next weeks and months.

Overwatch 2‘s player vs player portion is set to launch as a separate free-to-play game in October, and completely replace the original game. The sequel will also do away with controversial random loot boxes, and instead use a battle pass model with and purchasable cosmetics for monetisation, similar to many other free-to-play titles.

We’ve gathered everything you need to know about Overwatch 2 ahead of the shooter’s launch here.

In other news, Marauders lead developer Cameron Small says Escape From Tarkov‘s Factory map “definitely bled” into Small Impact Games’ upcoming shooter.

Chris Rock Responds To Will Smith’s Apology During Stand-Up Routine

Comedian Chris Rock has reportedly responded to Will Smith’s new apology, albeit indirectly, during an on stage performance in New Jersey.

“If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims,” Rock said. “Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith… I went to work the next day, I got kids,” he said, according to CNN.

He later added: “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face”.

Smith recently released a five-minute direct to camera video where he apologizes for charging the Oscars stage earlier this year and slapping Rock — who was hosting the ceremony at the time — after he made a G.I. Jane joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia.

“Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down, so it hurts me psychologically and emotionally that I didn’t live up to peoples’ image and impression of me,” Smith said in the video.

“The work I am trying to do is — I am deeply remorseful and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself. I’m human and I made a mistake and I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of shit.

“So I would say to those people, I know it was confusing. I know it was shocking. But I promise you, I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world.”

He added that he had reached out to Rock, but the comic wasn’t keen to talk. “I will say to you Chris, I apologize to you”, he said. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Productivity Commission says working smarter can improve life

While average hours worked had failed by about 10 per cent, or four hours, over the same period, average hours worked in other rich nations had failed even more. In some nations, such as Norway and Denmark, hours worked have fallen by a quarter but their productivity has grown more than Australia’s.

The combination of more people working longer hours than in other countries meant GDP per capita had remained relatively high.

Increased productivity over the past 120 years has lifted Australians’ living conditions. In 1901, it took 185 working hours to afford a double bed and mattress compared to just 18 hours in 2019. In more recent years, the cost of smartphones has tumbled while their quality has soared.

According to the commission, finding ways to lift productivity would not only make Australians better off, but better rested.

If the country’s labor productivity level was the same as Belgium’s, Australians could reduce the amount of time spent at work by four hours a week without a fall in income.

According to the commission, this would deliver Australians a “leisure dividend” of one less day a week of work.

Productivity Commission chair Michael Brennan says finding ways to increase productivity will make Australians better off.

If Australia had the same productivity levels as Belgium but people only marginally reduced their working week, they could get an extra hour a week of leisure while increasing GDP per capita by 25 per cent.

Commission chair Michael Brennan said the country had to look for new ways to drive productivity growth, including a review of the nation’s policy levers and industries into which resources should be concentrated.

“Productivity growth is essential to address the nation’s economic challenges, including rising cost-of-living pressures, but it is not guaranteed,” he said.

“Nowadays, improvements in service quality and the impact innovative new products and services have on people’s lives matter most.

“However, the overarching principle of productivity – that we aim to work smarter, not harder or longer – is as important as ever.”

Productivity traditionally describes the number of goods and services that can be generated from inputs such as machines and workers. It also covers the improvement in the quality of goods and services over time.

According to the commission, which in its 2017 Shifting the Dial report set out a range of proposals to increase productivity, little has changed over the past five years.

The 2017 report found changes in education and health, competition in the pharmacy sector, a price on carbon emissions, tax reform and vehicle user charges could deliver a $140 billion boost to the economy over 20 years.

“However, overall the dial has yet to be shifted by government,” its latest report found.

loading

The commission will release discussion papers over the coming months on specific areas where it believes there is scope for major productivity gains. They will cover the use of data, education and skills, the diffusion of innovation across the economy and impediments to business investment that will also include decarbonisation.

Eric Schmitt beats former Gov. Eric Greitens in Missouri GOP Senate primary, NBC projects

Eric Greitens, the scandal-tarred former Missouri governor who launched a comeback bid against the wishes of many Republicans, will lose the state’s GOP Senate primary, NBC News projects.

Eric Schmitt, currently the state’s attorney general, is projected to proceed to the general election, where he will compete with a Democratic nominee for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Roy Blunt.

The primary results mark a thudding defeat for Greitens, who fully embraced former President Donald Trump and fought against recent allegations of domestic abuse as he looked to claw his way back to the political fore.

Greitens had announced his Senate bid nearly three years after resigning from the governor’s office amid accusations that he blackmailed a hairdresser with whom he was having an affair. Greitens admitted to the tryst of her, but denied he had threatened to release her nude photographs he took of her if she revealed the affair.

He was charged with felony invasion of privacy related to the alleged blackmailing. Greitens was also charged with illegally using a charity donor list to help fund his 2016 gubernatorial campaign. Both charges were dropped around the time Greitens resigned in June 2018.

Those and other scandals led mainstream Republicans to worry about a Greitens candidacy jeopardizing the party’s hold on a Senate seat in a state that otherwise reliably votes Republicans into high office. Democrats are desperate to keep their razor-thin majority in the Senate, but their control of the chamber is threatened by a challenging political environment, exacerbated by President Joe Biden’s unpopularity and recent economic turmoil.

Greitens had aligned himself completely with Trump during his Senate campaign, including echoing Trump’s false claims about widespread fraud tainting the 2020 presidential election. Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr., joined Greitens’ campaign as national co-chair.

But the former president ultimately did not give Greitens a full-throated endorsement. Rather, he bizarrely endorsed “Eric” in the Missouri GOP Senate primary, where two of the top candidates are named Eric.

“I trust the Great People of Missouri, on this one, to make up their own minds,” Trump said in a social media post on the eve of the primary.

Both Greitens and Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt touted Trump’s announcement as though it were a personal endorsement.

Polling averages from RealClearPolitics showed Greitens had a smaller lead over a top Democratic primary candidate than either of his two biggest competitors in the Republican primary.

After Sheena Greitens filed court documents in March alleging Eric Greitens abused her and their young son while they were married, numerous top Republicans called on Greitens to drop out.

“If you hit a woman or a child, you belong in handcuffs, not the United States Senate,” said Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., who had investigated Greitens when he was Missouri’s attorney general.

Blunt himself said that Greitens “should not be a candidate for the Senate” if Sheena Greitens’ allegations are true.

BYD plans five electric models for Australia, ute and larger SUV on the cards

Chinese brand BYD is promising to introduce three electric cars in Australia by the end of this year, with an electric ute and Tesla Model Y rival on the horizon for 2023.

chinese electric car maker BYD says it plans to introduce five models in Australia within the next two years – as it prepares to deliver its first cars locally this month.

The Australian distributor of BYD – EVDirect – claims the Dolphin electric city car and Seal electric sedan are due to go on sale before the end of 2022.

The BYD Dolphin and Seal will follow the Atto 3 in Australia.

EVDirect managing director Luke Todd told Drive at a media event in Brisbane today he expects three new BYD models will be on local roads within 12 months.

“We’ll be launching the Seal for sale later this year, the exact date is yet to be confirmed,” Mr Todd told Drive.

“We’re just working with BYD [in China] for a specific time but it will most likely be December – and similar for the Dolphin.

“We are working through some marketing and a few various other things, but we’re looking to launch the two new cars for sale this year for delivery somewhere between March to mid 2023.”

Next in BYD’s ambitious rollout plans are an electric dual-cab ute and a larger electric SUV, both aimed at taking on the most popular new-car segments in Australia.

The larger BYD electric SUV – which may wear the Sea Lion name in China – is likely aimed at the Tesla Model Y.

The yet-to-be-revealed BYD ute – currently in development – is also a possibility for Australia.

“We love the ute. We have a product that’s been in development for some time,” said Mr Todd.

“We will hold back on announcing actual timing, but what I can say is when the BYD electric ute does come to the country, it will be a game-changer.

“It’s coming. I know it’s coming. There’s a whole factory prepping to build this thing.

“I can’t talk too much about the Sea Lion as yet, but what I can tell you is that we’ve got a total of five vehicles currently in the final stages of being ready for the Australian market.

“That includes the two that I’ve mentioned, the Dolphin and the Seal – [with Atto 3] that’s obviously the three.

“You could assume the Sea Lion is one of those, and then there’s some further models beyond that.”

BYD vehicles are ordered online at a fixed price, and delivered to customers via the Eagers Automotive dealership network in Australia.

Apple no longer requires most corporate employees to wear masks

Apple will no longer require corporate employees to wear masks at “most locations,” according to an internal email from the company’s COVID-19 response team seen by TheVerge. “We are writing to share an update to our current protocols,” the email reads. “In light of current circumstances, wearing a face mask will no longer be required in most locations.”

The company goes on to say that employees can, of course, continue to wear them if they prefer. “We recognize that everyone’s personal circumstances are different. Don’t hesitate to continue wearing a face mask if you feel more comfortable doing so. Also, please respect every individual’s decision to wear a mask or not.”

Apple is removing the mask mandate despite the fact that the number of new daily cases in the US currently sits at over 114,000, according to the CDC. Near Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, San Francisco’s BART metro system recently brought back its mask mandate, following the spread of the BA.5 COVID-19 variant that can evade immunity from past COVID-19 infection and vaccination.

Earlier this year, Apple said it would require employees to work at least three days per week at the office by May. However, it later softened that stance, saying that staff can continue to stay at home if they’re not comfortable.

Demi Lovato changes pronouns back to ‘she/her’ one year after coming out as non-binary

Demi lovato is using “she/her” pronouns again.

The 29-year-old singer – who notably came out as non-binary one year ago, and at the time said she would prefer to go by “they/them” – said she decided to change her pronouns back because she is “such a fluid person.” Lovato also said her previous adoption of “they / them” was a reflection of her de ella energy at the time, which she said was “balanced in my masculine and feminine energy.”

“When I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said ‘women’ and ‘men,’ I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t necessarily feel like a woman,” the ‘ Sorry Not Sorry’ singer shared on the Spout podcast this week. Listen above.

“I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human,” she continued of her feelings last year, saying changing her preferred pronouns to “they/them” initially was, for her, “feeling human at your core. “

“Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted ‘she/her’ again,” she continued on the podcast. “But I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect.”

“Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect,” she concluded.

It was in May 2021 when the Camp Rock star first announced she would be going by “they/them” pronouns due to being non-binary, an act she said came after “doing some healing and some reflective work.”

At the time, she said on her podcast 4D With Demi Lovato: “I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

Recently, however, Lovato’s followers noticed she had changed her Instagram bio to read “they/them/she/her” instead of “they/them,” and in April, she shared a series of photos to Instagram alongside the caption: “You call me they, but I’m still daddy’s girl…”

Lovato has been open about how the initial change of pronouns was “huge” for her, and that her gender identity is part of a journey that is evolving.

“If you misgender me – That’s okay,” she wrote in July last year in a now-deleted Instagram post. “I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It’s a huge transition to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!”

In August 2021, she also spoke out about how she may change her mind when it comes to her gender identity.

“There might be a time where I identify as trans,” Lovato said at the time. “I don’t know what this looks like for me. There might be a time where I identify as non-binary and gender-nonconforming my entire life.”

John Barilaro’s New York job put on ‘separate path’ to others, inquiry hears

A senior NSW government bureaucrat has told an inquiry the lucrative New York-based trade job given to John Barilaro was “put on a slightly separate path” to similar roles.

Investment NSW CEO Amy Brown is being grilled for a second time at a parliamentary inquiry into the appointment of the former deputy premier as the state’s senior trade and investment commissioner to the Americas.

This morning, Ms Brown told the inquiry she had a meeting with former trade minister Stuart Ayres on October 12 last year.

The inquiry was shown an email sent by one of Ms Brown’s staff shortly after that meeting, which included the line “the Minister would like to leave the New York post vacant for now”.

A man looking forward
Former deputy premier John Barilaro is due to give evidence at the inquiry next week.(AAP: Joel Carrett)

But Ms Brown told the inquiry it had actually been her decision to leave the post open, because of various factors, including tax hurdles and “serious performance issues” with a candidate who had initially been successful in applying for the role, Jenny West.

“I didn’t go into any particular detail about some of the performance issues I was starting to become aware of with regard to Ms West,” she told the inquiry.

“That was more conversations I was having with her team, as at that point, they were directly reporting to me because she was on extended leave.

“I said, ‘well, in light of the fact that we can’t offer anyone the job for some time, is it your view that we should keep that recruitment process closed and reopen it at another time?'”

She told the inquiry that Mr Ayres agreed.

“Any conversation I had with Minister Ayres were, therefore, to a degree, influential on my decision but in my view, it did not amount to undue influence because at all times, I felt that the decision was mine, ultimately mine to make, she said.

A woman walking on the street
Ms Brown was required to give evidence in person this morning. (abcnews)

Labor MLC Daniel Mookhey Ms Brown asked whether this meant the Americas position was put “on a slightly separate path” to other similar roles around the globe, to which she replied “yes”.

“I think it was a pragmatic piece of advice from me that we couldn’t fill the role for some time and his response was, ‘well then it makes sense to keep it vacant,’ she told the inquiry.

“I think we both concluded, given everything that had happened, it would be sensible to go back to market when we were ready to put a contract on the table and when we could take stock of where things were at.”

Mr Ayres, who maintains he has done nothing wrong throughout the process, this morning resigned from the NSW ministry, after weeks of being linked to Mr Barilaro’s appointment.

Mr Barilaro’s appointment has been put under the microscope for several weeks and is the subject of two separate inquiries.

He has since withdrawn from the $500,000-a-year position.

Mr Barilaro is due to appear before the inquiry on Monday.

Premier Dominic Perrottet has also ordered a separate review into the recruitment process for the role.
