A few more Loot Boxes Go Away on August 30th, 2015?

It’s been a long time since gamers could feel victory, and today it’s one of those days. Although Blizzard announced they would remove loot boxes from Overwatch once Overwatch 2 launched almost a year ago, the good news is surprisingly coming early than expected, since loot boxes will be leaving the Overwatch store on August 30th.

How about getting players on top of their content until Overwatch 2?

Those still playing the game and sagging overwatch ranks know and know that the anniversary Remix event will happen, where players can spend their currency and buy cosmetics before Overwatch 2 is released on October 4th. If the box is out of the store, the players will only earn boxes by standard way, such as leveling their account and playing an arcade.

After Overwatch 2 comes out, Blizzard will implement the Battle Pass system, which appears a bit more transparent when it comes to unlocking the content in the game. Of course, there are also skins that players can buy directly, including the new Mythic skins.

Watch the first time you play Overwatch 2.

If you don’t want to grind anything in the original Overwatch or you don’t like the second stage of playing Overwatch, you must try to buy the Watchpoint Pack and get instant access to the closed beta. As for the grand question, are there some new players in this game? Even if the game is due to be free on release, you can find plenty of players on the closed beta servers.

Championship roundup: QPR keeper scores last-gasp leveller at Sunderland | Championship

the QPR goalkeeper Seny Dieng scored a stoppage-time equalizer to force a 2-2 draw at Sunderland in the Championship.

Dieng headed home deep into time added on to complete a remarkable comeback by Michael Beale’s team. Sunderland were 2-0 up and coasting towards a win after first-half goals from Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms. But Elias Chair got Rangers back in it in the 87th minute and five minutes later Chair’s cross was incredibly converted by Dieng, who then made an incredible stop at the other end.

“At half-time we had honest words, told them to live more dangerously, we played on the front foot and Ilias scores a great goal,” said Beale. “I thought the moment had gone but Seny had other plans. It was a great goal followed by a great save. When Seny went up an assistant said: ‘Are you happy?’ I said I am not going to bring him back. When the goalkeeper goes up, who picks him up, he attacks both balls in. A crazy game.”

Rotherham enjoyed a stellar afternoon as they hammered Reading 4-0 at the New York Stadium. The Millers blew Paul Ince’s side away in the first half, racing into a 3-0 lead after only 18 minutes and adding a fourth before the break. Reading’s goalkeeper Joe Lumley had an afternoon to forget. After Richard Wood headed the hosts in front, Lumley allowed Conor Washington to score from an acute angle, before letting a weak Jamie Lindsay shot through his hands from him. Chiedozie Ogbene piled on the misery for Lumley, beating the keeper to the ball and finishing into an empty net.

“All that going forward didn’t please me as much as our defending,” said the Rotherham manager Paul Warne. “Generally speaking we defended really well. I thought we deserved to win but maybe not by four goals – but I’m not complaining.”

Millwall came from two goals down to beat Coventry 3-2. The Sky Blues were in dreamland after just 28 minutes as Kyle McFadzean and Matty Godden put them 2-0 up. Jake Cooper’s goal before half-time proved pivotal as it gave the Lions something to cling on to and they quickly leveled after the restart through George Honeyman. Gustavo Hamer was sent off for Coventry and then George Saville’s 85th-minute goal won it for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Coventry have had a second Championship game postponed due to the condition of their pitch, with Tuesday’s home match against Wigan called off by the EFL due to ongoing issues with the playing surface at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Last weekend, their opening home fixture against Rotherham was postponed, and the Carabao Cup tie with Bristol City was moved to Burton’s Pirelli Stadium.

Arthur Gnahoua put the Shrimps ahead but Danny Andrew leveled just seven minutes from time, and the game ended with Paddy Lane being dismissed with a straight red card for a tackle on Shane McLoughlin.

Norwich are enduring a difficult start following relegation last season as they lost 2-1 at hull, who climbed to third. Óscar Estupiñán scored twice, once in either half, to extend the Tigers’ unbeaten start to the campaign, despite Marcelino Núñez’s consolation for the Canaries, who sit bottom after three games.

Dean Smith urged Norwich fans to stay calm following the defeat. “We’re giving ourselves tough things to come back from with silly mistakes, but I don’t think after three games there’s any cause to panic,” he said. “We should have won the game in the first 20 minutes – the chances we created and the players who they fell to.”

Huddersfield earned their first points of the season by beating Stoke 3-1. Lee Nicholls’s penalty save from Lewis Baker in the first half provided pivotal as Yuta Nakayama headed the Terriers in front before the break. Baker made amends for his spot-kick miss as he leveled after the restart but late goals from Danny Ward and Jordan Rhodes gave Danny Schofield his first win as Terriers manager.

swansea got their first win of the campaign as they beat blackpool 1-0. After Andy Fisher saved Jerry Yates’s penalty early in the second half, Olivier Ntcham scored in the final 10 minutes to get the Swans up and running for the campaign.

Walsall are second after Danny Rose’s stoppage-time goal earned Stevenage a 1-1 draw at Banks’s Stadium. The Saddlers, who had also won their opening two league games, went ahead in the 13th minute through Danny Johnson. That looked to have been enough, only for substitute Rose to snatch an equalizer in the 10th minute of added time to leave Stevenage still unbeaten in fifth.

Salford are also on seven points after beating 10-man Crewe 3-0 with a brace from Brandon Thomas-Asante. Conor McAleny gave Salford a 17th-minute lead before the visitors saw striker Bassala Sambou shown a straight red card following a clash with Theo Vassell just after the half-hour. Northampton picked up their second league win after beating hartlepool 2-1. Doncaster struck twice in the final three minutes to fight back and draw 2-2 at A.F.C. Wimbledon. Dons substitute Nathan Young-Coombes made an instant impact from the bench when he broke the deadlock in the 76th minute and then looked to have sealed the points when making it 2-0 with just six minutes to go. However, Rovers midfielder Tommy Rowe set up a tense finale with a 20-yard strike and defender Ro-Shaun Williams played in from a corner in the fifth minute of added time.

Carlisle and Swindon drew 1-1 at Brunton Park. Jacob Wakeling put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute, but Kristian Dennis hauled Carlisle level just before the break.

Thank you for your feedback.

Cardiff manager Steve Morison said he was “pleased as punch” with his team’s performance as they dominated birmingham to win 1-0, with Aston Villa loanee Jaden Philogene scoring the only goal in 17 minutes. “We should have had a couple more,” he said, “but, on the whole, it was really pleasing … Anyone can beat anyone this year, I don’t think there’s going to be a Fulham, it’s going to be very tight so it’s about stringing results together and getting that consistency.”

Elsewhere, Brad Potts’s acrobatic finish was enough for Preston to beat Luton 1-0 while wigan and Bristol City drew 1-1.

Cameron Smith branded a sellout by fans amid LIV Golf Series links at St Jude Championships, scores, leaderboard

Australia’s Cam Smith has been forced to battle hecklers calling him a “sellout” amid links to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series as he battled in the third round of the St Jude Championship.

Smith shot a 67 in the third round to find himself tied for a third spot on 199 with American pair Will Zalatoris and Trey Mullinax. He is two strokes behind the leader, JJ Spaun (197) and one behind the second-placed Sepp Straka.

Speculation is rife over Smith’s future in the game, with the Australian widely expected to sign a reported $143 million deal with LIV, and his potential defection has not been lost on those in the crowd in Memphis watching him play.

According to Memphis-based columnist, Mark Giannotto, the Australian was branded a “sellout” by a fan while hitting a tee shot on 14, with the sledge one of many alluding to the LIV links.

Public opinion on Smith has soured drastically in recent weeks due to his refusal to shut down links to the Saudi-backed rebel tour, despite him winning his first major just a month earlier.

While an official move to LIV Golf could see Smith officially made into a villain by the public, former Australian cricket captain Mark Taylor said the Queensland-native could potentially turn it into a win.

“There’s no doubt there’s a bit of reputational damage at the moment … but I want to go in and bat for him,” Taylor said on Nine’s Sports Sunday.

“It’s a lot tougher for the non-Americans with this LIV Golf. As an Australian golfer or a South African golfer, you’ve got to make the big move to the (United) States to become a regular PGA Tour.

Cameron Smith ‘ready to cop some heat’

“That’s what Adam Scott has done, that’s what Greg Norman did many years ago, so it’s tougher for those guys to commit full-time to the PGA Tour when there’s another option which is also talking about moving events to Australia.

“If Cameron Smith moves to LIV, yes there will be some reputational damage, but I think he can make it work for him.

“LIV are already talking about having three tournaments in Australia and the Australian golf tour is nowhere near what it used to be. This influx of money from LIV will be great for Australian golf. I’d love to see Cameron Smith buy into it.

“If I was his manager, I’d say, ‘Well if you’re going to sign up for this amount of money, put 10-20 per cent of it into Australian golf and buy in and get Australian golf back to where it used to be.

“If he does that, it’ll be a win for him and a win for Australian golf. I think eventually LIV, the PGA, they’ll get back together in some form or another and I think it’ll be a win- win for him and Australian golf.”

Smith has so far shot down questions from multiple journalists regarding a potential defection, notably after his Open win last month, but said earlier this week that he is “ready to cop some heat.”

“That’s just their job – that’s what they’re there to do. They’re there to sell stories and I’m sure they’ve had a few looks at it the last few days,” he told Sky Sports of questions regarding the LIV tour.

“You know I’m ready to cop some heat… but like I said I’m here to win the FedEx Cup Playoffs – that’s my number one goal and whatever happens after that will come from me.”

“Spider-Man Remastered” Launches On PC

Spider Man Remastered Launches On Pc
Sony Interactive Ent.

Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered” has been released on PC with a new launch trailer for the title also available.

Reviews for Nixxes Software’s PC port of the game which launched four years ago on PlayStation (with this remaster launching two years ago on PS5) have been very good, with acclaim for the title running across multiple generations of hardware – including the Steam Deck.

On Metacritic the PC port is scoring 87/100, on par with the original PS4 release. On Steam, with over 7,000 reviews counted, the reaction has been ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’. The few negative reviews (around 3%) have most often complained about crashes on their specific systems – presumably to be fixed with future patches.

Reviews of the game have confirmed the biggest upgrade is ray traced reflections which go beyond the PS5 with a ‘very high’ setting for those on high-end hardware such as RTX 3000 series and Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. The detail level is noticeably higher thanks to true 4K resolution whilst still offering ray tracing and 60+ fps.

One minor downside compared to the PS5 version is load times according to Digital Foundry’s test. Loading from the menu into the regular game on the PS5 was 1.92 seconds, while PC (12900K w/ 3.5Gb NVMe drive) was 3.03 seconds. The first launch time of the game was 1.6 seconds on PS5 compared to over 4 seconds on various forms of PC.

Running the title in 4K with top-end hardware – an Intel i9-12900K CPU and NVIDIA RTX 3090 GPU – with everything up to its highest setting and DLSS (Quality) on results in frame rates around or a little consistently above 60fps.

One common caveat in reviews is that this is a game that really demands a controller as opposed to a keyboard and mouse, though it is playable on those. Some have been having issues with third party controllers, with instructions for a fix available here.

The game is the first in Sony’s PC library to offer full DualSense controller support (albeit wired only via USB-C cable) with the game designed to take full advantage of the haptic rumble, the adaptive triggers, the touchpad, and the built-in speaker – making it the preferred choice above the Xbox Elite 2 or Xbox Series X gamepad for the PC version.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered” is currently available on Steam, Epic and more PC platforms. It marks the fourth major formerly exclusive PlayStation title to come to PC following “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” “Days Gone,” and “God of War” (along with earlier console exclusive titles like “Death Stranding,” “Journey,” “ Heavy Rain,” “Detroit Become Human”).

PC sales of those titles make up only a fraction of console sales (in the case of “Horizon: Zero Dawn” around 10%, “God of War” closer to 5%), but it’s big enough now even the PlayStation website has been updated this week to incorporate a new dedicated PC section.

“Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection,” “The Last of Us Part I,” and “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” are all expected to be arriving on the PC soon, while users are hoping numerous other exclusives will make the jump in coming years including “Ghost of Tsushima,” “The Last of Us Part II,” “God of War: Ragnarok,” “Horizon: Forbidden West,” “Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection,” “Infamous Second Son,” “Shadow of the Colossus: Remastered,” “Until Dawn,” “The Last Guardian,” “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart” and “Bloodborne” among others.

“Arrogant” Saints slammed as Lloyd points out flaws in King’s goal-kicking technique

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has slammed St Kilda for barring young forward Max King from receiving goal-kicking tips off AFL legend Matthew Lloyd.

King, who Lloyd coached at high school level with Haileybury, initially reached out to the former Don for help in 2021 with the Saints denying his request as they’d rather let their own coaching staff train the key forward.

With King struggling for goal again in Friday’s loss to Brisbane as he kicked 0.5 from relatively standard set shots, St Kilda’s call was questioned again by Cornes after the 22-year-old’s waywardness cost his side the game.

“It was absolutely precious, and it was arrogant of St Kilda to not accept the help that Max was asking for,” Cornes said on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“Now we’re 12 months down the track and Max King has kicked 0.5 in a game that St Kilda needed to win to keep their final hopes alive.”

Post-match, Brett Ratten doubled down on the club’s decision to bar Lloyd from coaching King, stating that the forward “won’t be seeing anybody outside the club” despite the fact that he’s kicked 41 behinds to go with his 47 goals this season .

“Flatly denying that they will accept any help from outside the club,” Cornes said.

“Once again, I will say it’s arrogant, it is precious, and they are looking after their own ego.

“Max King is crying out for help, he’s asked for help and his football club is denying him of that.

“It’s costing his team … I guess I’m going to say again for the arrogance of thinking they can fix a problem that they clearly can’t.”

In his press conference, Ratten also added that King doesn’t have “many flaws” in his goal-kicking routine, something that Lloyd himself disagreed with.

“It’s a very naive comment because he has got flaws,” Lloyd said.

“I want to take a look at what he’s doing wrong.

“When he’s coming in you need momentum in your run-up… when you’re walking in slow like Max King is, to generate power, you need to lean back with your body.

“But if you’ve got speed on the ball and you’re going quicker, you’re over it and you can get your ball drop down.”

Further analyzing King when he makes contact with the football, Lloyd believes having a more upright back position when kicking could help the young star.

“I’m not sure why he’s spinning the ball as he’s coming in,” he said.

“But look at how slow he’s coming in, the momentum falls back.

“He kicks the ball but look at the position he’s in, he’s leaning back like he’s on a chair.

“That’s why he’s struggling and he’s pulling the ball as he tries to generate power.

“You should be kicking the ball and going forward and taking another step after you kick the footy.

“It is a technical flaw, he’s kicked 47.41 this year.”

King and the Saints will be hoping to bounce back when they host Sydney at Marvel Stadium next Sunday.

Canberra vs St George Illawarra Results & Match Report

The Raiders have survived a comeback from the Dragons to seal a crucial 24-22 win at GIO Stadium to keep their finals hopes alive.

It was a thrilling finish that was almost identical to the controversial Round 16 finish — only this time it was the Raiders who benefited.

Mat Feagai made a break and knocked on as he got up to play the ball. Corey Harawira-Naera made the tackle and the Dragons pleaded with the referee for a penalty but to no avail.

The home team struck first with a try in the opening minute, only for the Dragons to hit back five minutes later through youngster Talatau Amone, who bagged a hat-trick and set up a try in the 75th minute to keep the game alive.

DEJA VU IN CRAZY FINISH

The finish to Sunday’s game will be spoken about for days to come after the Raiders were saved by the whistle in an “almost identical” situation to how they lost in Round 16.

With less than a minute to go Ben Hunt shifted the ball to Mat Feagai who took off down the field before he was finally pulled down by Corey Harawira-Naera.

Harawira-Naera looked to have tried to hold Feagai down and the Dragons back knocked on as he made his way to his feet for a play the ball.

Dragons players pleaded with referee Adam Gee for a penalty but weren’t so lucky.

“It’s almost identical… Round 16 all over again in reverse,” Fox League commentator Brenton Speed said.

“The Dragons are thinking ‘where is our penalty?’ that the Raiders did not get in Wollongong. But Adam Gee says that it is full time and Canberra’s season is alive.

“The Dragons are done in 2022. They’ll talk about this ending for a little while… nearly the miracle.”

It was only six weeks ago that Raiders coach Ricky Stuart smoked over a controversial call back in Round 16 — the last time these two teams met.

As the clock wound down two Dragons players looked to hold a Raider down to slow the play and as a result the Raiders were awarded a six-again. But there was belief it should have been a ruck penalty — especially because Ben Hunt wasn’t square at marker.

YOUNG DRAGON’S COMING OF AGE

Fresh off inking a contract extension, Dragons youngster Talatau Amone had his best NRL game to date.

Amone bagged a hat-trick and set up a try in the final minutes in a big turnaround from his unhappy performance against the Sharks just over a week ago.

The 20-year-old scored a double in the first 20 minutes to quickly put Round 21 behind him.

“I don’t reckon he ran three or four times last week, but he’s already scored two tries and had about five carries — a big difference in the young man,” Fox League’s Shane Flanagan said.

He then scored his third in the 67th minute to keep the Dragons in the game.

“He had an unhappy week last week but today he’s been dangerous every time he’s touched the ball,” Flanagan said.

“We know what talent he’s got, he’s going to be an NRL player for a long period of time and he’s showing it today.”

But Amone wasn’t done. The rising five-eighth, who inked a one-year extension on Thursday, threw a pinpoint pass with five minutes to go to set up a grandstand finish.

It was that moment in an impressive game from the youngster that Flanagan believes could set him up for the future.

“This young man has had a day out,” he said.

“He’s scored three tries and then on the last tackle he goes down the right-hand side and comes up with a beautiful pass across two of his teammates to hit Tautau Moga on the chest.

“This could be the making of Junior Amone.

“We’ve always know how much talent he’s got but to be put a complete 80-minute performance together like he has today it will give him an enormous amount of confidence moving forward.”

Along with his three tries and one try assist, Amone notched up seven tackle busts, three linebreaks, a linebreak assist and an offload.

‘X-FACTOR’ SAVAGE STARS FOR RAIDERS

The injection of Xavier Savage is exactly what the Raiders needed with the elusive fullback setting up two tries in their crucial win on Sunday.

Savage missed last week with an ankle injury, but was on a mission in his return game.

The 20-year-old’s skill was on show early when he sent veteran winger Jordan Rapana over in the corner in the 27th minute with a slick ball.

“The deft touch of Xavier Savage… He had the Dragons spellbound,” Fox League commentator Brenton Speed said.

Shane Flanagan added: “Xavier’s Savage’s speed gets Tautau Moga in two minds.”

Savage then set up another try in the first minute of the second half with a grubber for Albert Hopoate to score.

He finished the game with 158 running meters, three tackle busts, two linebreak assists and an offload to go with his two try assists.

“Savage has added some real x-factor, as we thought he would, for the Raiders,” Michael Ennis said.

Cricket news 2022: Alana Kin hat-trick in Hundred women’s competition, Shane Warne tribute video

Australian leg-spinner Alana King has become the first cricketer to take a hat-trick in the Hundred women’s competition, achieving the rare feat on debut for the Trent Rockets on Saturday evening AEST.

The 26-year-old helped roll the Manchester Originals for 76 at Old Trafford, finishing her 20-delivery spell with stunning figures of 4/15 including 13 dot balls, the best bowling performance by a female Rockets player in the competition’s short history.

After removing West Indies veteran Deandra Dottin for a second-ball duck early in Manchester’s run chase, Player of the Match King returned to tear through the Originals middle-order.

The Victorian clean-bowled Cordelia Griffith before trapping rival spinner Sophie Ecclestone on the front pad the very next delivery.

And King completed the hat-trick by bowling Originals captain Kate Cross with a beauty that spun through the gate and crashed into the middle stump, leaving Manchester in dire straits at 7/45.

The Aussie tweaker, donning her trademark sunglasses, celebrated by raising an index finger and sprinting towards cover, reminiscent of the late Shane Warne’s unforgettable 700th Test wicket at the MCG in 2006.

King’s hat-trick took place on the same pitch that childhood hero Warne delivered his iconic “Ball of the Century” in 1993.

“Will I get my name up here at Old Trafford? That would be brilliant. Hopefully right next to Warnie,” King told Sky Sports post-match.

“He took poles here for fun, and I’m sure he was looking down pretty happy.

“He was a massive inspiration, but it wasn’t just me. It was kids all around the world who inspired him to pick up leg spin. He was definitely the reason I picked up leg spin. Hopefully he’s been proud watching down on me spin a few.

“When I was a bit younger, I did a couple of sessions with him. All I remember from that was him saying, ‘Spin it hard and have some fun’. I live by that every single day.

“That’s my first hat-trick. Not even in juniors did I take one. My first hat-trick at Old Trafford, I couldn’t have written it.

“As soon as I got that first wicket, I knew I had to keep aiming for the stumps. I’m just stoked that I can play my part for this team.”

King would have taken four wickets in four balls if the Rockets had reviewed her following delivery, which struck wicketkeeper Eleanor Threlkeld on the pads.

King will be particularly relieved to tick off the career milestone after missing out on a hat-trick during the recent Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

During Australia’s group stage match against Barbados at Edgbaston, captain Meg Lanning dropped a regulation catch at first slip on the hat-trick delivery.

King also starred with the bat on Saturday, smacking an 19 not out off nine deliveries at the death, including two sixes, to steer the Rockets, who were without Lanning and England all-rounder Nat Sciver for personal reasons, towards a defendable total of 5/119.

English wicketkeeper Abigail Freeborn top-scored for the Rockets with an unbeaten 45 off 38 balls, and the Originals came nowhere near chasing the modest total, ultimately suffering a 43-run defeat.

“In the first half, I thought we bowled and fielded really well, and we were happy chasing 120. But then the second bit, we didn’t play like we wanted to play,” Originals coach Paul Shaw said.

“Alana King’s a quality performer who will be around for a long time. She bowled really, really well. But we didn’t play her that well.”

King also held onto a tough outfield catch to remove England’s Ami Campbell for 13 and cap off a superb all-round performance.

“Pretty special but as I said, I’m here to do my job for the team and I’m glad it came off today,” King said.

“It was a fresh wicket today, it was a bit dry and hoping there was some spin and there was. Stoked to get the win and happy I can contribute.

“The atmosphere was absolutely incredible. To get our first win was pretty special. We knew we were under par with the bat, and we needed to stick to our game plan with the ball. We wanted to take some early wickets in the powerplay, which we did. As soon as we got their two openers out, we knew the pressure was back on them.”

The last 10 months of King’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary — after winning a Women’s Big Bash League title with the Perth Scorchers in October last year, she made her international debut in all three formats during the recent home summer.

She was a crucial member of Australia’s undefeated Ashes campaign and World Cup triumph in New Zealand before winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Australian superstar Ellyse Perry also impressed on Hundred debut for the Birmingham Phoenix with a blistering 58 (31) against the Welsh Fire in Cardiff.

Player of the Match Perry combined with compatriot Sophie Molineux for a crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 82 in 54 balls on the way to a 19-run victory.

The Rockets will next face Birmingham at Edgbaston on Monday, with the first ball scheduled for midnight AEST.

Xbox, PlayStation and the new normal subscription

It’s been more than a month since PlayStation Plus Premium went live, cementing the video game industry’s shift toward cloud gaming and subscriptions. PlayStation’s game-streaming scheme is competing directly with Xbox Game Pass, the service that provided the concept by earning more than 25 million subscribers over the past five years, leveraging Microsoft’s massive cloud network.

As the two main console manufacturers and the owners of huge franchises, Sony and Microsoft set the stage for the rest of the video game marketplace, and the transition to streaming subscriptions is no different. Here we’ll break down what they’re each offering and take a look at the industry from the perspective of the cloud.

PlayStation Plus has three tiers: Essential, Extra and Premium. Essential costs $10 a month or $60 a year, and it’s basically the PlayStation Plus you’re used to, offering three games to download each month, access to online multiplayer features, cloud storage and discounts. PS Plus Extra costs $15 a month or $100 a year, and has everything in the Essential tier plus a library of up to 400 downloadable PS4 and PS5 games.

PS Plus Premium costs $18 a month or $120 a year, and adds up to 340 games from past PlayStation consoles. This is also the tier that unlocks cloud gaming, supporting more than 700 titles and adding the ability to stream or download games from older eras. This tier actually replaces PlayStation Now, Sony’s often-underwhelming cloud gaming service that launched on PS4. With PS Plus Premium, cloud gaming is available on PS4, PS5 and PC, but not on mobile devices.

Sony

That’s one difference between Sony and Microsoft’s approach, as Xbox titles are playable on mobile devices as well as consoles and PC. But the bigger distinction is the type of games that are available on each network. Sony doesn’t plan on adding big exclusive games like forspoken or God of War Ragnarok to Plus on day one, meaning subscribers will have to buy these titles separately if they want to play right away. On the Xbox side of things, Game Pass Ultimate offers a streaming library of more than 300 titles, and it includes big first-party drops like halo-infinite on release day. That’s significant, considering Xbox owns influential studios including Bethesda and id Software, and it’s in the process of acquiring Activision Blizzard. Xbox offering the next Doom or Elder Scrolls on day one is a bigger draw than Sony offering strayeven if Stray is the most adorable game of the year.

Xbox has been the loudest proponent of cloud gaming in the console space, and with the support of a robust network from Microsoft and years of public testing, Game Pass has set the standard when it comes to subscription services. Game Pass has PC-only and console-only tiers providing access to a library of more than 300 downloadable games for $10 a month, while Game Pass Ultimate unlocks cloud play on PC, mobile and Xbox consoles for $15 a month. Assuming you pay for PS Plus Premium up-front, this puts the annual price of Game Pass Ultimate ahead of Premium by $60 – which is roughly what it’ll cost PlayStation subscribers to buy one of those first-party Sony games, so it all shakes out in the end.

Microsoft Xbox Series S

Aaron Souppouris/Engadget

Xbox has been steadily building the foundation for an industry that isn’t limited by hardware, relying on cloud gaming rather than console generations, while Sony still seems married to the idea of hardware cycles and more traditional game sales. Despite being there first with PlayStation Now, when it comes to streaming, Sony is playing catch-up to Microsoft, but it still has plenty to offer in the form of classic games and new exclusives. Cloud play is here to stay and it’s possible that other services like Steam and the Epic Games Store will follow Xbox and PlayStation’s lead in the coming years. Nintendo is bringing up the rear in terms of online, cloud, and anything resembling 21st century technology, but it has an unrivaled back catalog and Switch Online unlocks a number of NES, SNES and N64 games.

This isn’t about any one service being better than the others. This is about adjusting to the new normal for video games, where your money won’t be spent on a $60 disc or a discrete download code, but will instead be spread among streaming services with individual purchases on the side. We’re used to this idea when it comes to TV and movies, and streaming technology is almost reliable enough to make it the standard in gaming.

These are the new calculations we’ll be running each month: Do I value Game Pass Ultimate over Netflix? Or PS Plus Premium over Spotify? New subscription services pop up almost weekly; something’s gotta give.
