Hours before the Albuquerque killings suspect was publicly identified, CNN reporters were inside his home. Here’s what happened

Hours before the announcement of the arrest, CNN had been allowed into Syed’s home and had spoken to his daughter as the family was still cleaning up after investigators, she said, executed a search warrant the prior night. Living room rugs were tossed around, and the contents of drawers had been strewn about. The flag of Afghanistan – from where Syed and his family moved several years ago – hung prominently in the living room.

In the home, authorities found firearms, along with information showing Syed may have known the victims “to some extent” and interpersonal conflict may have led to the killings, police said Tuesday.

One of the firearms recovered in his home has been linked to bullet casings found at the scenes of two of the killings, while casings for a handgun found in his car when he was stopped were linked to one of the scenes, according to the arrest affidavit .

Police haven’t yet determined a motive for the killings, they have said.

Syed denied any involvement in the killings during an interview with police on Tuesday, according to the arrest affidavit.

The daughter’s husband was friends with two of the men who were killed, Aftab Hussein and Naeem Hussain, she told CNN, which has chosen not to name her out of concern for her safety. Her father de ella was not happy when she got married in February 2018 but he had come to accept the union more recently, she said.

The woman, one of Syed’s six children, said her father was home during the shootings but could not offer proof.

“My father is not a person who can kill somebody. My father has always talked about peace. That’s why we are here in the United States. We came from Afghanistan, from fighting, from shooting,” she told CNN.

The daughter said her father, who works as a truck driver, also drives a gray Volkswagen Jetta. albuquerque police previously released images of a gray Volkswagen sedan, appearing to be a Jetta, that they called a “vehicle of interest” in the killings.

Syed left his home in his vehicle Monday night, telling his family he was going to Texas to find a place for them, fearful of the recent shootings that had taken place in the Muslim community, his daughter said.

Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina (left) is joined Tuesday by Mayor Tim Keller and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in announcing the suspect's arrest.

Authorities, acting on a tip from the public, had been preparing to execute a search warrant on Syed’s home Monday night when they saw him get into his car and followed him, deputy commander of the Albuquerque Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division Kyle Hartsock said in a Tuesday news conference.

Syed was pulled over and detained near Santa Rosa, New Mexico, about 120 miles east of Albuquerque and roughly halfway to the Texas border.

Meanwhile, police executed the search warrant in Syed’s home and found multiple firearms, Hartsock said.

Officials plan to charge Syed with two homicides — the killings of Aftab Hussein and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain — they said, and are working with the district attorney on potential charges for the August 5 killing of Naeem Hussain and the November killing of Mohammad Zaher Ahmadi , Hartsock said.

4 Muslim men were killed in Albuquerque. Here's what we know about them

There is evidence “strong enough that” authorities are continuing to view Syed as the “most likely person of interest or suspect” in those killings as well, Hartsock said.

The family has been in the US for roughly six years, the daughter said.

Hartsock confirmed Syed is from Afghanistan, saying he had “a few minor misdemeanor arrests (from the Albuquerque Police Department) from domestic violence” in the last several years and some other incidents, adding, “That’s our only known history with him locally.”

All three previous domestic violence charges Syed faced were dismissed, Hartsock said.

The four Muslim men were killed in Albuquerque between November and this month — the latest three within a span of two weeks. All victims were of South Asian descent, and an arrest affidavit obtained Tuesday by CNN affiliate KOAT provided more details on two of the killings.

Aftab Hussein was found July 26 with multiple gunshot wounds, lying next to a car, according to police. Detectives learned the gunman had waited behind a bush near the driveway where the victim usually parked his vehicle, then fired through the bush multiple times when Hussein got out of his vehicle, according to the complaint.

On August 1, police got a call about a drive-by shooting and found Muhammud Afzaal Hussain with multiple gunshot wounds, the complaint states.

Ashley Killough and Ed Lavandera reported from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Christina Maxouris wrote from Atlanta.

Elden Ring Patch 1.06 Comparison Videos Highlight Small Performance Improvements on PC and More

New Elden Ring comparison videos that have been shared online confirm that patch 1.06 brought some changes outside of those listed in the official patch notes.

A new video shared by MxBenchmarkPC reveals that the latest patch for From Software’s latest game brings small performance improvements, at least at 1080p resolution.

The Elden Ring patch 1.06 brought some important balance changes, such as tweaks to the Great Ax attack speed and changes to the Bloodhound Step and Quickstep Ashes of War and the Rivers of Blood katana. Videos shared by WaZeus, Gamers Cathedral, and Prizaa Gaming Channel highlight these changes by comparing the weapons and Ashes of War between different game versions.

Elden Ring is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One worldwide. Learn more about the latest game by From Software by checking out my review.

I tried hard to find any faults in Elden Ring, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find any outside of some technical issues that the developers could fix via patches. I firmly believe that perfection doesn’t exist and that it is always possible to improve, but I really couldn’t think of anything that Elden Ring could have done better. As such, the game wholly deserves a perfect score, an honor I would have given only to a couple of other modern games, not only for its extremely high quality but also for what it accomplished with its open world and for how it will surely influence video games as a whole in the future.

Issey Miyake, famous Japanese fashion designer, dies aged 84 | fashion

The Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, renowned for his innovative pleated clothing and for producing 100 mock turtlenecks for the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has died of liver cancer in a hospital in Tokyo. He was 84.

The Issey Miyake Group released a short statement about his work saying: “Miyake’s dynamic spirit was driven by a relentless curiosity and desire to convey joy through the medium of design.” It stated that “as per Mr Miyake’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service”.

Much like Andy Warhol, Miyake was interested in the overlap between art and design, and fashion. Throughout his 52-year career, the designer maintained an “anti-trend” stance, always referring to his designs as “clothing” rather than “fashion”.

“I am most interested in people and the human form,” Miyake told the New York Times in 2014. “Clothing is the closest thing to all humans.”

Perhaps best known for designing the polyester-cotton mock turtlenecks indelibly linked with Steve Jobs, it is believed he produced 100 at less than $200 each. Designed to alleviate “decision fatigue”, along with Jobs’ Levi’s 501s and New Balance 991s, the tops became shorthand for late 90s Silicon Valley uniform, based on the idea that busy people’s minds are on more important things than picking out ties.

Born in Hiroshima in 1938, Miyake studied graphic design at the Tama Art University in Tokyo. But piqued by the crossover between disciplines, he pivoted to fashion and moved to Paris to become an apprentice to Guy Laroche and eventually work for Hubert de Givenchy around the time Audrey Hepburn was wearing his dresses by him.

After witnessing the 1968 student protests, Miyake became disenchanted by an industry designed to dress only the wealthy. It was this interest in fashion as art and function, democratic but aesthetically pleasing, which led him to establish the Miyake Design Studio in 1970, and show his first very wearable collection in New York in 1971. One of his earliest pieces was a jersey body , hand-painted using traditional Japanese tattoo techniques.

A keen sportsman, function became the lynchpin of Miyake’s work. His most famous and most affordable clothes from him, the Pleats Please line, was launched in 1993 as a retort to the price and unwearability of high-end fashion.

Featuring capes and trousers, and flowing sleeveless tabards made from heat-treated polyester to create permanent pleats, the clothes never creased, could be machine washed and be rolled instead of folded. The line remains one of the first and best examples of gender-free clothing and still fetches hundreds of pounds on resale sites.

It was Miyake’s cynicism about the fashion industry, in particular the speed at which it was produced, that gave his designs such longevity in reputation and design. In an interview with the Village Voice in 1983, Miyake outlined his opposition to the fashion cycle: “I want my customer to be able to wear a sweater I designed 10 years ago with this year’s pants.”

Mikyake saw technology as a solution to the problem of overproduction, with one such solution the late 90’s “One Piece of Cloth” idea (later known as A-POC) which pioneered the idea of making clothes out of a single tube of fabric, cutting down and waste and showing exactly what could be done with a knitting machine, a computer and the right knowhow.

Many of his designs are in museums, including the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. In 2010, he received the Order of Culture in 2010 and in 2016 he was decorated as a Commandeur de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’honneur.

Loth to give interviews, Miyake had a pronounced limp – a result of surviving the 1945 atomic bomb dropped on his home town of Hiroshima when he was seven. Three years later, his mother died of radiation exposure.

In a rare 2009 op-ed for the New York Times, Miyake recounted just how much that day, and his mother’s subsequent death, informed his creativity. “I have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to put them behind me, preferring to think of things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy. I gravitated toward the field of clothing design, partly because it is a creative format that is modern and optimistic.

“I did not want to be labeled ‘the designer who survived the atomic bomb’.”

Republicans hold Minnesota House seat as Finstad wins special election

Placeholder while article actions load

Republican Brad Finstad, a former state lawmaker, won the special election for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, defeating Democrat Jeff Ettinger in a closely watched race.

The Associated Press called the race Wednesday morning, with Finstad holding a narrow lead of 51.1 percent to 46.9 percent with 98 percent of precincts reporting.

“I’m humbled to receive the support of my fellow southern Minnesotans to represent them in Congress,” Finstad tweeted Wednesday. “Our country faces extraordinary challenges, but I am confident that we can come together to overcome them and ensure the 21st century is yet another great American century.”

The seat had been held by Rep. Jim Hagedorn (R-Minn.), who died in February after a battle with kidney cancer.

A member of a family that has farmed for generations, Finstad is the former director of rural development in Minnesota for the US Department of Agriculture. The 46-year-old Minnesota native was appointed to the position by President Donald Trump.

The seat was labeled “likely Republican” by media outlets, given its demographics and history. But analysts were paying close attention to the race to determine whether a Democratic upset — spurred by the recent Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade — would suggest that the political environment is improving for Democrats, who are underdogs in their bid to hold their majority in the House.

On his website, Finstad describes himself as a “strong supporter of the Second Amendment, defending the unborn, and keeping government out of the way so entrepreneurs, farmers, and small businesses can thrive.” He calls himself “a conservative fighter running for Congress to fire Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House and put the brakes on the out-of-control Biden/Pelosi agenda that is fueling inflation and hurting Southern Minnesota families.”

A former chief executive of Hormel Foods, Ettinger now oversees the food processing company’s foundation. The 63-year-old lawyer is a California native who joined the Minnesota company as a corporate attorney.

Ettinger boasted that he is “not a politician.” He noted that he had never run for office before and said he joined the race “to address the problems that politicians seem unable or unwilling to fix.”

“The voters of Southern Minnesota have spoken, and I want to congratulate Brad Finstad on winning the Special Election last night,” he tweeted Wednesday. “Though I had hoped to celebrate different news with you all, there is plenty for which to be hopeful.”

But he now has an even larger number of burnt investors wanting their money returned after his latest venture called Zipett, also collapsed this week.

“Guys, it’s with the heaviest of hearts I must be honest and update you all with news from overseas,” he wrote in an email to investors informing them the latest Zipett project has “ended for now.”

This development comes just over two weeks after A Current Affair first raised question marks over Tidy’s abysmal financial history which resulted in him filing for bankruptcy three times.

A statement of affairs for his 2007 bankruptcy reveals $5.1 million in unpaid debts to 28 creditors, the largest being his father the late Colin Tidy, a well-known Sydney bookmaker.

His bankruptcy in 2018 contained $7.9 million owing including almost $1 million to the Australian Tax Office.

There is also an additional $3.2 million worth of investors money in one of his failed cryptocurrency ventures called Bartercoin.

And another $2.2 million in Zipett coins that also failed to launch.

ASIC searches reveal Robert Colin Tidy has been a director of 21 different companies, 16 of which are now either deregistered or under external administration.

He was also the driver of a $365,000 company-owned Lamborghini which was written off after crashing on the Pacific Highway.

Since it first began investigating Tidy’s affairs, A Current Affair has received more than 50 emails from investors wishing they’d never met him.

Jennifer Hercules and Eric Buckley are one of the largest individual investors impacted by Tidy’s failed business ventures with losses totaling more than $1 million, some of it from her superannuation.

“Our whole world came crashing down,” Hercules said whilst fighting back tears.

“He’s absolutely devastated me, I have sleepless nights, I have nightmares,” she said.

“He’s dashed our hopes of having the life which we’ve worked so hard and saved so hard to have.”

Buckley said he has simple advice for anyone considering investing with Tidy.

“And that is a) don’t believe a word he says. And b) don’t believe a word he says. He promises you the world and delivers zero.”

Women who claim to be former girlfriends of Tidy also revealed he went on gambling sprees, telling one he’d lost up to $250,000 in a single day.

Tidy posted some of his winning bets publicly to his Instagram account, claiming the bets were for his Punters Club.

But Tidy shouldn’t be punting in this country at all, he’d been disqualified from betting with any Australian wagering operator since 1997 due to “defaulting” on bets.

A Current Affair has also obtained videos and pictures distributed by Tidy among his investor group showing 179 bets worth $168,000 in a single day.

A former staffer of Tidy’s who requested their be concealed, said they witnessed him gambling at Townsville Casino whilst bankrupt.

“So we’re probably talking $5000-$10,000 at casinos on the pokies.”

The former staffer also said they doubt ten per cent of profits from some of his various ventures are given to charity, as Tidy claims.

“I’ve never seen a cent go to a charity and I don’t believe there’s ever been a cent go to charity.”

When A Current Affair confronted Tidy at a Sydney hotel last month, he claimed to have donated “easily over $300,000” and named Youth Off The Streets as a recipient of “maybe $100,000”.

Father Chris Riley told A Current Affair “there is no indication” anyone named Robert Tidy “has ever donated to Youth Off The Streets.”

Tidy provided a 25 year-old note indicating he did once pay for children and staff from the charity to attend a State of Origin game, all the way back in 1997.

Hercules and Buckley claim they were not aware of Tidy’s questionable financial history or the extent of his gambling sprees until after they had invested

The Sunshine Coast couple were taken out on fishing trips by Tidy and also wined and dined at expensive restaurants, even celebrating his birthday with him.

“He said that we were his family that he never had,” Buckley said.

They claim Tidy eventually started offering investment information, suggesting it would be better to sell some shares and invest with him “because the money would be a lot safer with him.”

When the project eventually collapsed, Tidy explained in an email that they knew the investment “was going to be HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE.”

Hercules claims he told her it would be “minimal risk” and wouldn’t have invested had she known it was highly aggressive.

Tidy answered a series of questions via email, claiming he “did not say there was no risk” in relation to Hercules’ investment.

He also stated his bankruptcy trustee was informed of his gambling, which involved bets placed for other people.

He admitted to gambling at Townsville casino while bankrupt which he claims his trustee approved.

Justice Dept. Charges Iranian in Plot to Kill John Bolton

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department charged a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Wednesday with plotting to assassinate John R. Bolton, who served as national security adviser to President Donald J. Trump.

Prosecutors said the Iranian had offered $300,000 to hire someone to kill Mr. Bolton, a conservative foreign policy expert and hard-liner on Iran, in Washington or Maryland.

Officials with the department’s national security division said the planned murder of Mr. Bolton was likely in retaliation for the US military’s killing in January 2020 of Qassim Suleimani, a top commander of the Revolutionary Guard, a branch of Iran’s military that is a power base for the country’s ruling military and political elites.

The man named in the unsealed criminal complaint in federal court in Washington, Shahram Poursafi, 45, is not in custody and remains abroad, department officials said. If captured and convicted, he would face up to 10 years in prison for using interstate commerce facilities in the plot and another 15 years for attempting to provide material support for a transnational murder plot.

Matthew G. Olsen, an assistant attorney general for national security at the Justice Department, said that the case was “not the first time we have uncovered Iranian plots to exact revenge against individuals on US soil, and we will work tirelessly to expose and disrupt every one of these efforts.”

Mr. Bolton — who bitterly opposed the Obama administration’s nuclear deal with Tehran — clashed repeatedly with Mr. Trump during a stormy 17-month tenure as national security adviser. He later wrote a tell-all book detailing the former president’s impulsive and often haphazard foreign policy requests.

“While much cannot be said publicly right now, one point is indisputable: Iran’s rulers are liars, terrorists and enemies of the United States,” Mr. Bolton said in a statement released by his office about the indictment. “Their radical, anti-American objectives are unchanged; their commitments are worthless; and their global threat is growing.”

Splatoon 3 getting a World Premiere Splatfest later this month

Splatoon 3’s big Nintendo Direct just aired, and it showed off a tonne of neat stuff. But perhaps the most exciting part is that you’ll be able to try out that cool stuff very soon — just a few weeks from now.

The World Premiere Splatfest will be similar to Testfires held for Splatoon 1 and 2 in the past, in which players will get to participate in a Splatfest. Splatfests work a little differently in Splatoon 3, with two distinct phases — the first is the usual 4v4 turf war matches, but due to there now being three teams instead of two, there’ll be a second phase where two players from each of the two losing teams will gang up in a tricolor turf war to take down the winning team of four. Obviously quite new and interesting! So it’ll be good to get a chance to try these out before the game launches in September.

The times and dates for the Splatfest World Premiere have been confirmed for Australia, and are as follows:

Perth (AWST) August 28, 8:00 a.m. – August 28, 8:00 p.m.
Adelaide/Darwin (ACST) August 28, 9:30am – August 28, 9:30pm
Melbourne/Sydney/Canberra
/Brisbane/Hobart (AEST)
August 28, 10:00 a.m. – August 28, 10:00 p.m.
New Zealand (NZST) August 28, 12:00pm – August 29, 12:00am

You’ll also be able to download and play some sections of the World Premiere app from the 25th of August.

Olivia Newton-John secretly visited grieving, injured Perth girl in Princess Margaret Hospital

Olivia Newton-John’s selfless attitude can be best described in a secret hospital visit to a grieving and badly hurt girl in a Perth hospital in 2003.

Emily Barker was just 11 and in critical condition in Princess Margaret Hospital after a crash in Beechboro that killed her 39-year-old mother, Catherine. Their car and a truck had collided after lightning had knocked out traffic lights at the scene of the incident.

Soon after, the girl’s father Ron — knowing Newton-John was in Perth for a concert — rang her record label to try to organize a spirit-lifting visit.
