NSW farmers say Murrumbidgee flooding exacerbated by dam mismanagement

Farmers who lost livestock due to flooding along the Murrumbidgee River say water management by dam operators has made the event worse than it needed to be.

The Murrumbidgee River reached moderate to major flood levels this week following releases of close to 100,000 megalitres a day from Burrinjuck Dam after record inflows from some parts of the catchment.

Borambola farmer Trish Cookson lost dozens of calves in the flood, with some washing up dead, and still has cattle stranded by floodwaters.

She said they could have managed the anticipated flows of up to six meters but they struggled with the larger than expected water release.

“We’ve made several attempts with boats, dogs, neighbours, trying to get the cattle out… it’s very heartbreaking,” Ms Cookson said.

She said living on the banks of the Murrumbidgee, they expected some natural riverine flooding, but keeping dams at such high levels during a La Nina year was “reckless.”

“I would say that it’s been mismanagement of the water storage facilities,” she said.

Ms Cookson said there were plenty of opportunities throughout the year for dam managers to lower dam levels.

Of the two Murrumbidgee storages, Burrinjuck Dam has not fallen below around 80 per cent this year, while Blowering Dam has not dropped far below 90 per cent full.

WaterNSW is in charge of dam operations and said Burrinjuck Dam filled and spilled due to inflows that were higher than forecast.

“The Yass River at Yass, in particular, experienced its highest flood peak since records began in 1915,” WaterNSW said in a statement.

“WaterNSW will make releases from rural dams well in advance of an event in order to create airspace and mitigate the impacts of future rain events.

“However, when storages are full WaterNSW has limited ability to mitigate floods.”

Flooding impacts ‘seem to be ignored’

Independent Wagga Wagga MP Joe McGirr said he had been contacted by several landholders concerned about the dam management.

“The concern that landholders have expressed to me is when those levels are kept too high. The risk is when you get a sudden weather event… the dam spills,” Dr McGirr said.

Dr McGirr said he had brought the issue to the attention of NSW Parliament this week.

“It’s almost as though so much priority is given to the need for the irrigators to have their water and the environmental flows that the effects of flooding… seem to be ignored.”

Fear of more flooding this spring

Ms Cookson said she was holding out hope that floodwaters would recede soon, but with a full catchment and wet spring predicted, any relief could be short-lived.

“I can only see that for every rain event that happens, we’re going to be plunged further and further into this quagmire that we’re in at the moment,” she said.

“I fear for those animals. We will continue to try and find a way to get them out.”

Murrumbidgee River landholders are also worried about the NSW government’s program to more effectively deliver environmental water to the Murray Darling Basin.

The Reconnecting River Country Program could see the river run at higher flow rates, potentially exacerbating natural flooding events.

“After having the water modeling done on our property, we know that the reconnecting river program is virtually going to make our property not a viable business,” Ms Cookson said.

“We have a billabong that cuts from one of our property to the other.

“At the higher flow levels that they’re predicting, we will not be able to access 34 per cent of our property.”

The Department of Planning and Environment said current water levels seen across the Riverina were well above the flows being considered by the program.

“We take the views of landholders and stakeholders seriously, and we encourage them to have their say on the flood mapping and flow options to ensure we get it right,” a Department of Planning and Environment spokesperson said.

John Kelly Shocked by Trump Not Wanting Wounded Vets in Parade: Book

  • John Kelly once had to tell Donald Trump that wounded war veterans “are the heroes,” after Trump said he didn’t want to include them in a military parade.
  • According to an excerpt from an upcoming book by Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, Kelly was shocked by Trump’s request.
  • “I don’t want them. It doesn’t look good for me,” Trump said of including wounded veterans in the parade.

A shocked John Kelly — one of Donald Trump’s former White House chiefs of staff — once had to tell Trump that wounded veterans “are the heroes” after the former president said he didn’t want them featured in a military parade because he feared them’ d make him look bad.

According to an excerpt from an upcoming book by Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, “The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021,” Trump — after attending the 2017 Bastille Day parade in Paris — told Kelly that he did not want any injured veterans at a 2018 military parade.

“Look, I don’t want any wounded guys in the parade,” Trump said, according to the book. “This doesn’t look good for me.”

He noted that at the Bastille Day parade, there were several wounded veterans, many of whom were in wheelchairs after losing limbs in battle.

According to the book excerpt, Kelly — a retired Marine Corps General — could not believe what Trump had asked.

“Those are the heroes,” he told Trump, the book reads. “In our society, there’s only one group of people who are more heroic than they are—and they are buried over in Arlington.”

Kelly’s son, Robert was a lieutenant killed in action in Afghanistan and is among the veterans buried at Arlington, according to the book.

“I don’t want them. It doesn’t look good for me,” Trump said again.

According to a 2020 report from the Atlantic, Trump also said “nobody wants to see that,” in reference to the wounded veterans.

Plenty of Trump’s former team, including Kelly, have been critical of the former president since they left the administration and he has left the White House — particularly Trump’s actions around the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol.

Kelly, for example, told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl last year that if Trump were “a real man,” he would’ve gone down to the Capitol on January 6 and told his supporters to stop the violent attack.

Glasser and Baker’s forthcoming book offers a detailed look at the ways Trump clashed with the former generals that served as top advisors to him early in the former president’s tenure.

In once instance covered in the book, Trump asked Kelly why US generals weren’t as loyal to him as the senior officers who served Adolf Hitler during WWII.

“You fucking generals, why can’t you be like the German generals?” Trump said to Kelly, per an excerpt from the book published in the New Yorker.

Kelly said to Trump, “You do know that they tried to kill Hitler three times and almost pulled it off?” But Trump was insistent that the generals were “totally loyal” to Hitler, according to the book.

In an interview with NBC on Tuesday, Kelly confirmed that the book’s depiction of this interaction was accurate. Kelly spoke on Trump’s “unwillingness to accept that the American generals should not be loyal to him as the German generals were to the leader of Germany. And, again, I very definitely pointed out that they tried to kill him.” [Hitler] a number of times.”

The Block 2022 recap episode 4: Last-minute renovation dramas cause chaos the Blockheads as they race to finish waterproofing

Time is ticking for our teams to finish their main bathrooms, and they need to move fast if they want any chance of winning the biggest prize in Block history.

With a $250,000 kitchen upgrade on offer for the winning team, the stakes in the first week have never been higher.

But not everything is going to plan, and last-minute renovation dramas are causing major disruptions as teams scramble to complete their waterproofing.

Stream the latest episodes of The Block for free on 9Now.

After being thrown into the show last-minute, following Joel and Elle’s shock exit, Rachel and Ryan are still settling into Block life.

After finding out their plans of having a walk-in shower in their bathroom didn’t meet regulations, the couple needed to come up with a solution fast. While a quick fix is closing the wet area by adding a built-in shower screen, Rachel isn’t willing to compromise.

Ryan and Rachel are faced with an issue on The Block 2022.

“That wasn’t ever an option for us… it was going completely against the aesthetic of our design,” she says.

EPISODE THREE RECAP: Foreman Keith shuts one team’s site down after someone else ‘snitches’ on them

Luckily the pair end up making major alterations to the floor to meet regulations. And it is a massive sigh of relief when the Blockheads get the tick of approval from Foreman Keith.

But it’s a different situation over in House 4.

Dylan and Jenny’s plans get tripped up by the exact same regulations as they’re told they can’t have a walk-in shower without making changes to their floor.

“If we did that, we wouldn’t be able to finish,” Jenny admits.

“When you have something in your head, I hate things changing but I feel like it’s The Block so I’m gonna have to get used to that.”

In House 5 Omar and Oz have big plans for their bathroom, so the last thing they want to hear is that their floor needs to be ripped up and redone to meet safety standards.

Foreman Keith pays them a visit to deliver the bad news.

“The floor was a little big staggered next to the shower side so he told us we had to pull off some sheets and redo that again as well,” Omar says.

Keith tells the boys that there’s no other option but to start again and the boys start to worry about how far behind they’re falling.

“That was very disappointing. We’re gonna be waterproofing on Friday. We’re so far behind,” Omar reveals.

But the pair somehow manage to get back on track and redo the whole space in time to waterproof.

Meanwhile reno rookies Ankur and Sharon, who were comfortably ahead, are also hit with a massive setback.

“We thought we were in a good spot then everything started to go downhill,” Ankur reveals.

Foreman Keith pulls Ankur aside and raises his concerns about their waterproofer priming the floor with mud.

The situation becomes worse after the same waterproofer leaves the job later that night without finishing.

Sharon reveals she had to beg the company to send someone back, and the same tiler ends up returning at 1.30am to get the job done.

“You can imagine how awkward that was ’cause he didn’t want to be there in the first place. We had to watch with an eagle-eye to make sure the waterproofing was done to the standard The Block requires,” Sharon says.

The following morning a tired Sharon smokes after finding out she was bumped down in the queue to have her underfloor heating installed.

“Ours was supposed to be first but some d–kheads cut the line,” she vents to Rachel. “I don’t know how they do that.”

But we do, and so does Jenny in House 4.

“Last night I called the underfloor heating guys and said, ‘What can I do for you? So you can come earlier’ and he said, ‘You can buy me some cruisers’,” she reveals.

She delivers a case of cruisers and the tradies deliver on their promise to install her underfloor heating first.

“Jenny is good. She bribed them with a slab of cruisers,” Sarah-Jane reveals. “I respect the hustle… and I was like, ‘I’ll be on the cruisers next week’,” she adds.

Over at House 1, Tom and Sarah-Jane scramble to track down an emergency shower screen after finding out their original 2.4-meter one didn’t comply. They finally manage to secure a screen, but the next challenge they’re faced with is getting the tick of approval from Foreman Keith.

It’s an anxious wait for Sarah-Jane who is itching to leave the site and spend the afternoon celebrating her daughter Cleo’s first birthday.

But Keith calls the plastering “beautiful” and gives them the green light to start waterproofing.

The couple race off to visit their baby daughter and it’s a beautiful moment as the family sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Cleo and share a cake together.

“It was so good to see Cleo… I picked her up and she had a grin ear to ear,” Tom reveals.

“Mummy misses you so much,” Sarah-Jane tells the baby girl, who happily picks up and hands her dad the entire cake.

With the teams back on track after finally finishing waterproofing their bathrooms, Shelley Craft meets all the contestants and does her first walkarounds with Scotty.

It’s bad news for Rachel and Ryan who get a reality check after Shelley questions their contemporary style of bathroom with no nod to the heritage era of their house.

Meanwhile Oz and Omar are understandably star-struck when they meet Shelley. Oz gets goosebumps and can hardly talk.

Scotty and Shelley worry that the teams aren’t hitting the mark with their rooms, and are particularly worried about Omar and Oz’s bathroom being finished in time.

It’s a hectic couple of days and our Blockheads are all working hard to deliver the first room on The Block. Stay tuned to see what they deliver on Sunday.

Trade news, Kevin Durant future, trade options, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics trade Jaylen Brown

The Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat were initially listed as preferred landing spots for Kevin Durant but now two new contenders have emerged.

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers are also desirable destinations for the 12-time All-Star.

Of course, Durant has been heavily linked to Boston in recent weeks, with a potential trade package centered around Jaylen Brown.

Dellavedova to make NBA return! | 00:32

But those reports were focused on a move that would work for the Nets. This one looks at just what Durant may be after and it looks like he is keen on the Celtics too.

Boston reportedly offered Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and a first-round pick but even that does not seem to be enough for Brooklyn, who want reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart.

The Sixers, meanwhile, could offer an attractive package including Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris and/or Matisse Thybulle and would see Durant reunite with James Harden.

Durant would be likely to accept a trade to Boston of Philadelphia, though his Brooklyn future is likely in the hands of Joe Tsai.

The 12-time All-Star made an ultimatum to the Nets owner, asking for GM Sean Marks and coach Steve Nash to be fired or be shipped out of town himself.

Durant’s issues with the Nets and specifically Tsai go much deeper than his demand they fire Nash, a source close to the Nets and familiar with KD’s thinking told The New York Post.

“The ultimatum he made is not what really caused the deterioration. It’s not the ultimatum itself,” the source said.

Durant, among other things, was not consulted on the Nets’ firing of assistant coach and director of player development Adam Harrington when the season ended, the source believes.

“There are simple things that destroy a relationship. You fired someone he was close to and didn’t have a conversation about it,” the source said.

Last week, the popular Harrington attended a Liberty WNBA basketball game and was seen hugging current Nets players, according to a Reddit post.

“I would think there are so many things, it’s not one thing,” the source said. “I think KD wants to leave and it doesn’t matter what reasons he says.”

During a meeting this weekend with Tsai said, as he did last month, he wanted to be traded unless Nash was fired, The Post confirmed. There are also reports he wants general manager Sean Marks fired as well.

Marks was the main force behind hiring Nash, sources said.

Durant believes “he traded away too many pieces,” the source said.

Tsai, after the reports Monday about the meeting with Durant, tweeted, “Our front office and coaching staff have my support. We will make decisions in the best interest of the Brooklyn Nets.”

All involved recognize Marks and Nash do not have autonomy and ultimately if the Nets blow up it is because of Tsai, the source said.

Tsai now has to decide whether to lower his high asking price and get a Durant trade done before training camp opens at the end of September as the 33-year-old star has requested.

“I don’t think anybody on the team is safe from being traded. Everyone is up for grabs,” the source said.

Durant signed a four-year, $198 million contract extension in 2021, so he has limited power in forcing a trade unless he refuses to play. A source told The Post this week that’s an unlikely scenario.

“I don’t think he’s not going to play,” they said.

Gas is suddenly cheaper. That could help Biden.

And even as Americans face pressure from elevated grocery bills and rising rents, consumer spending is slowing but still strong — fueling hopes that inflation might ease without leading to a full-blown recession.

“We are turning the corner on inflation,” Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi said in an interview before the data release.

The new report is a welcome development for a White House that has been celebrating recent legislative victories — including a law aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor manufacturing and the Senate’s passage of a deficit-reducing package with funding for climate and health initiatives — that Democrats say will fight inflation. It could also blunt Republican attacks that the administration — and the Fed — vastly miscalculated the rise in the cost of living.

New survey data published by the New York Fed on Monday found that consumers are softening expectations that runaway prices will continue to eviscerate their paychecks over the next three years. Those expectations play a key role in the central bank’s decisions on how much to raise rates. Americans now expect gas prices to rise 1.5 percent — compared to 5.7 percent just a month ago, and 6.7 percent for food, a decline of 2.5 percentage points.

While those figures represent clear improvements, it will take a lot more for President Joe Biden and the Democrats to turn around the narrative that spiking prices have overshadowed most of the economy’s gains as it emerges from the pandemic.

“Even if it comes down a little bit, it’s still going to be bad,” Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, who is heading the effort to flip the Senate to Republican control, said in an interview ahead of the release. He called for reductions in government spending, arguing that the Senate-passed package won’t cut it.

“When they raise taxes, they never get the tax revenue than they anticipate and they always spend more than they anticipate,” he said.

For now, Americans haven’t curtailed spending, even as prices continue to climb. While consumer confidence metrics are fading, MasterCard reported that year-over-year spending swelled by more than 11 percent last month — a trend the credit card company claimed was driven as much by demand as swelling prices.

Amazon likely had a hand as well.

In reports released this week, both BofA Institute and Adobe pointed to Prime Day — the e-commerce giant’s massive company-wide sale — as a contributing factor to July spending. The discounts offered on Amazon during the sale can “really influence where we understand the consumer to be; in a very sort of price-sensitive state,” said Adobe Digital Insights Lead Analyst Vivek Pandya.

Lower online prices, however, provide a respite for consumers hammered by soaring costs.

To be certain, economists in the past have been premature in declaring that inflation has “peaked,” and several other indicators, including an explosive jobs market, rising labor costs and spiking household rents suggest upward pressure on prices could last for some time. That means that even if the Fed avoids causing a deep recession, it may still have to keep rates high for longer than many investors expect.

“We have a lot more heavy lifting in front of us, despite the likely peak in inflation,” said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist for RSM US. “We’re not in a multi-month process. We’re in a multi-year process.”

Meanwhile, several data points offer a muddled picture, at best, of where the economy is headed. The Consumer Price Index’s “headline number” includes food and energy — commodities with prices that are much more volatile driven by trading on exchanges, rather than by businesses. But the Fed also looks at measures excluding those prices to better gauge what it calls core inflation.

Any measure of price arises points to high inflation, so Fed Chair Jerome Powell says that distinction is less important for the moment. In July, core inflation rose 0.3 percent — still notable but below what economists had expected.

Still, Powell has said the central bank is looking for multiple reports showing inflation clearly cooling before it begins to ease off its interest rate hikes.

One of the most troublesome inflation drivers has been rent, which rose by 0.6 percent in July alone. Many expect housing costs to continue climbing sharply even as higher mortgage rates slow the ascent of home prices.

Andrew Patterson, senior international economist at Vanguard, said he expects inflation to persist above 3 percent through the end of 2023 because of housing costs — well above the Fed’s 2 percent target.

“If you get into the second half of next year and rents are persistently high? That’s going to be a point of concern for them,” he said.

Zandi, whose work has frequently been cited by the White House, said he expects rental prices to keep the Fed from hitting its target before 2024.

Strong labor markets will also play a role. The unemployment rate is at 3.5 percent, and while job openings have ticked down, they were still higher last month than at any point in the decade prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Labor Department data. And pay raises have continued to accelerate, which could increase costs for employers even as worker income fails to keep pace with overall price increases.

Bank of America Institute economist Anna Zhou said the strong labor market has helped prop up bank balances across all income levels, which allows households to offset some of the pressure of rising prices — particularly when it comes to rent.

“Around 34 percent of US households are renters,” Zhou said. “Surging rent prices definitely are squeezing their wallets.”

That squeeze will feel even tighter if gas prices start to climb again and food inflation persists.

Administration officials are quick to cite any data point that reinforces their case that lowering inflation has been Biden’s “number one priority,” as one White House official said Tuesday. Lower gas prices, the Inflation Reduction Act — which isn’t likely to have any immediate impact on prices — and the new CHIPS and Sciences law are part of those messaging efforts.

None of that will be enough to assume inflation hawks, including former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, who have warned that the Fed’s slow footing on inflation prior to the recent rate hikes has left the economy ill-suited to prepare for a soft landing.

“There will be disinflation coming from gasoline and other commodity prices,” Summers tweeted late Monday night. “It does not mean inflation is coming under control.”

Melbourne Airport removes T3 security, diverts passengers via T4

Melbourne Airport’s ambitious plan to link Terminals 3 and 4 has finally come to fruition, although a removal of security screening at T3 – home to Virgin Australia – now sees passengers required to walk to T4 for checks before heading back for their flight.

That reconfiguration is a key element of the hub’s $30 million transformation, which the airport described as ‘an elevation to the traveler experience’. The project’s centrepiece is an indoor walkway linking the landside departures levels of Terminals 3 and 4.

Among the other enhancements are greater connectivity between the terminals, in addition to smart security technology, also seen at the Gold Coast and Sydney T3. This time-saving tech allows travelers to keep laptops, tablets and liquids in their bags.

Two extra security lanes have also opened to meet increased demand.

As part of the linkway, the Virgin Australia lounge is now located in the secure airside zone, meaning premium travelers will be able to enjoy the facilities right up until boarding.

Premium screening has also re-opened for Platinum, Gold, Beyond and Business Class passengers from 5-10am weekdays.

Melbourne Airport says its T4 scanners halve the time it takes to go through security.

Melbourne Airport says its T4 scanners halve the time it takes to go through security.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus says the upgrade work – which also includes new amenities at T4 – was much needed, with the terminal receiving no significant works in over 20 years.

“One of the biggest pinch points for Virgin guests has been the security check points, and we expect this change will help improve the experience for passengers as they pass through screening,” Argus explains.

“A lack of space means expanding existing checkpoints to accommodate modern technology was not an option, but we think consolidating the screening operation results in a better outcome for passengers.

Here is a map of the new Departures process…

…and also the Arrivals.

Melbourne Airport says that “under the (T3) reconfiguration, domestic travelers will have more time to relax inside restaurants and retailers before boarding their flights.”

We’d suspect they’ll have less time if they have to walk from the T3 check in desks through to T4 for security screening and then walk back to T3 again – especially if their Virgin Australia flights are departing from the higher-numbered gates 7 through 10 at the top of the T3 pier.

One Melbourne-based frequent flyer told Executive Traveler that he expects that even with the T4-T3 walkway located behind security, that could come close to a 10-minute walk.

The new parents' room at T3.

The new parents’ room at T3.

That said, there are several upgrades to love, including:

  • a more streamlined exit point in arrivals to “intuitively guide guests to outdoor transport options”
  • upgraded bathrooms at T3, which include all gender areas, adult change rooms, and assistance animal relief spaces
  • a parent’s room featuring “interactive full-length walls so children can play and stay entertained while their guardians tend to other needs.”

As previously advised to executive traveler by a Melbourne Airport spokesperson, Virgin passengers with only cabin bags should check in online or via the Virgin app and head straight to T4, while also pointing out that some Virgin flights depart from T4.

What about Virgin’s promised T3 Premium Entry?

Interestingly, many of these changes – including the inter-terminal walkway and the relocation of T3 security to T4 – were first announced in December 2017 in partnership with Virgin Australia, with work scheduled to begin in 2018 for completion by 2020.

However, those plans included a “kerbside Premium Entry for Virgin Australia’s Business Class guests and Platinum and Gold Velocity frequent flyers, including dedicated check-in, bag drop and security screening features and direct access to the Virgin Australia Lounge.”

The original plan for T3 included private security screening and direct lounge access for Virgin Australia's premium passengers.

The original plan for T3 included private security screening and direct lounge access for Virgin Australia’s premium passengers.

This would replicate the kerbside Premium Entry facilities at Virgin’s Sydney and Brisbane domestic terminals, although both of those remain closed at the time of writing.

Contacted for comment, a Virgin Australia Group spokesman told executive traveler “Our plans to deliver a Premium Entry at Melbourne Airport remain under review amid the global pandemic.”

“We are committed to working with airports to deliver the world-class Virgin Australia guest experience and we welcome Melbourne Airport’s investment in the Terminal 3 transformation.”

Meta’s Portal smart displays gain support for Duet Display and get a new companion app for Macs

As the corporate world embraces its work-from-home future, Meta is doubling down on turning its line of smart displays into ultimate video calling devices. This week, the company announced its $349 Portal Plus (second-gen) and $199 Portal Go can now do extra work as a second display for your Mac or PC thanks to new support for the Duet Display app.

Meta is also launching the Meta Portal Companion app for Mac so you can share your computer screen while on a video call and more easily access controls to raise your hand, mute yourself, and adjust the volume.

The 10-inch Portal Go and the 15-inch Portal Plus are the newest — and likely last — additions to the company’s foray into consumer smart displays. Meta has reportedly decided it won’t be making any more for consumers and is shifting its focus to using Portals in the business world, which, in today’s landscape, translates to support for work from home as well.

Duet Display is a third-party app that turns an Android tablet or iPad into a second display for a PC or Mac for a more modest-sized alternative to adding an extra monitor to your desk. Now, it will work with Meta’s Portal Go and Portal Plus, allowing you to drag open windows to your Portal and multitask to your heart’s content.

The new macOS Meta Portal Companion app connects the Portal to your Mac, showing video calling controls on the computer as well as the smart display and making it easy to share your computer screen during a call.

New app support turns a Portal into a second screen.
Image: Goal

Both the Go and the Plus are still available to buy (and are currently $50 off at Amazon), and Meta has said it will continue to support them. I tested the Go, which is the smaller and more portable of the two thanks to a built-in battery, and found it to be an excellent dedicated video calling gadget — if a lackluster smart display. This added functionality could make it a good second or third (or, okay, fourth) screen in your home office, especially if you do a lot of video calling.

Both Portals work with almost every video calling system available — Zoom, Cisco’s Webex, BlueJeans, GoTo Meeting, Workplace, and Microsoft Teams — and, of course, Facebook’s own Messenger calling. They also sync with Outlook or Google calendars for quick access to meetings and support Bluetooth for adding a keyboard and headset.

Duet Display is available now in the Meta app store for the Portal Plus and Go in the US, the UK, Canada, France, Spain, and Italy (and only for the Plus in Australia and New Zealand). You also need to download the app to the computer you want to link with the Portal by visiting duetdisplay.com. The Meta Portal Companion app is a free download at portal.facebook.com/companion for the US and UK only.

Bullet Train: Brad Pitt keeps list of actors he’s worked with

Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson says his co-star Brad Pitt has a “good” list and “s***” list of actors he will and won’t work with.

The pair star together in Bullet Train, helmed by John Wick and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch.

Promoting his latest onscreen venture at Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, the actor dished on what working with Pitt was like, Page Six reported.

Referring to Pitt as a “humble and gracious human being”, the actor told Variety: “He is in a new chapter of his life, I think.”

Taylor-Johnson, who has previously starred in action movies like Kick-Ass and Avengers: Age of Ultron continued: “He just wants to bring light and joy into the world and be around people who are there to have a good time.

“You work with many actors and after a while, you start making notes: ‘I am definitely not working with this person ever again.’ Brad has this list too: the ‘good’ list and the ‘s***’ list.”

A fight scene from the film – which was released in the US on Friday – between the two stars left Taylor-Johnson hospitalized after he sustained major injuries on set.

After implementing a “crazy mad Keto diet” in an effort to get “scrawny and lean” for the film, the actor fainted due to “low blood sugar levels” shortly after sustaining a hand injury.

“We were in a fight sequence and I got drop-kicked across the room. And the one sharp bit of the corner where there wasn’t any padding took a chunk out of my hand. I literally went wham, passed out,” he told Variety of the incident.

“Then I came back and was like ‘Should we go again?’ and they were like ‘No, no, no. You gotta go get stitches at the hospital.’ So then I spent the night in the hospital,” he added.

“When you sign up for a David Leitch movie you know you gotta get a couple battle scars, some war wounds,” he added.

Alastair Clarkson tipped to join Kangaroos over GWS Giants by Caroline Wilson

Leading AFL columnist Caroline Wilson has tipped North Melbourne to land Alastair Clarkson ahead of the GWS Giants, with the master coach nearing a call.

Clarkson has met with both the Kangaroos and Giants brass but is understood to be leaning towards the Kangaroos due to his preference of remaining in Victoria.

According to Wilson, the four-time premiership-winning coach has begun putting his team together, with former Hawks connections Todd Viney, David Rath and Luke Boyd among those sought out by Clarkson.

“If I had to call it tonight I’d say Alastair Clarkson will be coaching North Melbourne,” she told Nine’s Footy Classified. “He will be coaching next year, that is beyond doubt.”

“Alastair has many close friends at the Kangaroos. The man who wanted the CEO job, Mark Brayshaw, who knows? Ben Amarfio mightn’t be there forever and Mark Brayshaw could be back. He’s got great makes there like Darren Crocker and Craig Sholl .

“These North people are very, very confident that they have got their man. I’m just not sure he’s prepared to go and live in western Sydney.”

Wilson said Viney is “very much in the box seat” to flank Clarkson at his next job, with the pair having worked together at Hawthorn when the club won the 2008 premiership.

Clarkson is also understood to have sought out recently-departed Giants coach Leon Cameron and former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna about potentially joining his staff.

According to Wilson, Clarkson’s decision will “definitely” be announced next week.
